RESUMO

Pentastomiasis, a zoonotic parasite infection, is typically found in the respiratory tract and viscera of the host, including humans. Here, we report for the first time an extremely rare case of intraosseous pentastomiasis in the human maxilla suffering from medication related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). A 55-year-old male had continuously visited the hospital for MRONJ which had primarily developed after bisphosphonate and anti-neoplastic administration for previous bone metastasis of medullary thyroid cancer. Pain, bone exposure, and pus discharge in the right mandible and left maxilla were seen. Osteolysis with maxillary cortical bone perforation at the left buccal vestibule, palate, nasal cavity, and maxillary sinus was observed by radiologic images. A biopsy was done at the left maxilla and through pathological evaluation, a parasite with features of pentastome was revealed within the necrotic bone tissue. Further history taking and laboratory evaluation was done. The parasite was suspected to be infected through maxillary open wounds caused by MRONJ. Awareness of intraosseous pentastomiasis should be emphasized not to be missed behind the MRONJ. Proper evaluation and interpretation for past medical history may lead to correct differential diagnosis and therapeutic intervention for parasite infections.

RESUMO

Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Majorly affected body regions are the liver and the lungs. However, rare localizations of the neck region, mastoids, parotid glands, orbita, and the mandible have been reported in literature. In this case, we report a large hydatid cyst of the maxillozygomatic region presenting as a slowly growing mass.

RESUMO

Torus palatinus (TP) is the most common exostosis of the maxillofacial skeleton. It usually does not cause symptoms, but removal may be required if it interferes with the function, denture placement, or suffers from recurring traumatic surface ulceration. Large variations in the prevalence of TP have been reported in different populations and were associated with age and sex. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence, size, and location of TP in a population of young Turkish. A total of 1,943 schoolchildren, 1,056 males and 887 females, ranging in age from 5 to 15 years were assessed for the prevalence, size and location of TP. Inspection and palpation were examined for the presence or absence of TP. The prevalence of the TP in study population was 30.9%. TP was found significantly more in females than in males (34.3, 28.1%, P<0.005). The more of TP were smaller than 2 cm (91.5%), and in molar location (62.9%). This study indicated that the prevalence of TP in Turkish population was high. There was a strong correlation between the prevalence of TP and age or sex.

RESUMO

An unexpected and unusual presence of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae in the cystic fluid of a maxillary dentigerous cyst in an 8-year-old boy is being reported for the first time. This was an incidental finding during routine fine-needle aspiration cytological examination.

RESUMO

Hydatid disease has a high incidence in the countries of the temperate zones such as Turkey. Only few cases in the head and neck region have been reported in the literature. Our case, an unusual localization of hydatidosis, i.e. hydatid disease of the infratemporal fossa of a 9-year-old male patient suffering from a swelling of the left maxillary region which was diagnosed by CT, is presented. The lesion visualized on CT images was compressing the neighbouring structures. The possible diagnosis was made based on the images obtained from CT examination.
