BACKGROUND: This study investigates the mediating effect of meaning in life between death anxiety and attitude toward palliative care among nursing students. METHODS: We enrolled 363 undergraduate nursing students using a convenience sampling method as the respondents and conducted a survey using general information about nursing students, the Chinese version of the FATCOD-B Scale, the Chinese version of the Death Anxiety Scale, and the Chinese version of the Meaning in Life Questionnaire. The SPSS25.0 statistical software was used to analyze the mediating effect. RESULTS: The mean total attitude score toward palliative care was (104.72 ± 10.62). Death anxiety had a significant negative predictive effect on the attitude toward palliative care (ß = -0.520, P < 0.01). When the mediating variable of the presence of meaning in life was included, the negative predictive effect of death anxiety on attitude toward palliative care remained significant (ß = -0.379, P = 0.036); the mediating effect (-0.141) accounted for 27.12% of the total impact (-0.520). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of meaning in life mediates the relationship between death anxiety and attitude toward palliative care. This implies that nursing educators, through their role in educating nursing students about the meaning of life, can significantly influence the development of a positive attitude toward palliative care.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of video-based simulation education on nursing students' motivation and academic achievement. The research was designed in a mixed model. A quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group was used for the quantitative part, and the descriptive phenomenology approach was used as the qualitative research method. The sample of the study consisted of second-year nursing students in two state universities in eastern Turkey. The data were collected with the Student Information Form, the Academic Achievement Test, and the Motivation Resources and Problems Scale using Google Forms Web application. Qualitative data were collected through online semistructured interview forms and focus group interviews. According to the results, the posttest academic achievement and Motivation Resources and Problems Scale mean scores of the students in the intervention group were significantly higher than those of the control group ( P < .05). In the analysis of the qualitative, three main themes emerged: We felt fortunate that it increased information retention," "We felt like we were in real practice environment," and "It made us feel that we were nurses." The results showed the use of video-based simulation can be suggested as a strategy to promote classroom teaching and engage students.

Developing competency in the use of EHRs is essential for entry-level professional nurses. Although nursing education has been encouraged to integrate this technology into nursing curriculum, many students still graduate feeling unprepared in this area. As a result, nursing graduates lack the skills necessary to effectively use EHRs, which may have negative consequences for safe patient care. Use of academic EMRs provides students the opportunity to integrate informatics education, develop critical thinking, and incorporate problem-solving skills in the clinical area. An academic EMR was introduced to students in the second semester of a baccalaureate degree nursing program. Students completed documentation on one patient from the mental health clinical rotation. A retrospective chart review was conducted, using a rubric to determine charting efficacy. Data analysis indicated that students struggled with documentation of the mental health assessment, care plan development, and nursing notes. Student documentation was strongest in vital signs and basic information. Students need practice documenting on the critical aspects of nursing care. Utilization of an academic EMR for clinical charting provides an opportunity for students to practice documentation and develop necessary skills for clinical practice.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to assess and compare the global health competencies (GHCs) of nursing students in Jordan. GHCs are crucial to ensure the delivery of culturally sensitive care to diverse populations. A cross-sectional survey using the GHC questionnaire was administered to 256 nursing students. Students ranked their ability in health implications of migration, travel, and displacement as the highest domain and health care as a human right and development resources as the lowest. Assessing nursing students' GHCs is important as they pursue their responsibilities toward global health in the future.

PURPOSE: Virtual reality technology has been used to establish a risk-free environment in which students can practice psychiatric nursing. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the effects of a virtual reality (VR) based mental health nursing simulation on practice performance of undergraduate nursing students. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, pre- and post-test design was used. A total of 68 students were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 32) and a control group (n = 36). The control group received conventional simulation using text scenario-based role play. The intervention group received VR software consisting of 360° video clips and related quiz questions. RESULTS: The self-reported perceived competency in nursing performance showed no statistically significant improvement in the experimental group, whereas the control group showed a statistically significant improvement in symptom management (t = 2.84, p = 0.007) and nurse-patient interaction (t = 2.10, p = 0.043). Scores from the assessor showed better performance scores in the experimental group in symptom management (t = -2.62, p = 0.011), violence risk management (t = -3.42, p = 0.001), and nurse-patient interaction (t = -3.12, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate the potential of using VR for optimized mental health nursing simulation. VR technology allowed realistic experiences which may ensure students have a more comprehensive understanding of mentally ill patients and in doing so, overcome barriers of traditional simulation, resulting in better learning outcomes.

Increasing the resilience of undergraduate nursing students is essential for the individual student's well-being and the healthcare system dealing with a looming nursing shortage. Undergraduate nursing students have reported that positive thinking and positive reframing are ways of coping with exposure to suffering, but measurement of these skills remains limited in this population. This is the first study to examine the psychometric properties of the Positive Thinking Skills Scale specifically in undergraduate nursing students and in a sample that includes students from both public and private universities. Internal consistency was demonstrated with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.824, convergent validity was demonstrated with correlations with measures of views of suffering and professional quality of life, and the one-factor structure was supported in a sample of 157 undergraduate nursing students. The Positive Thinking Skills Scale can be a useful tool to both assess and measure the development of positive thinking skills in undergraduate nursing students.

The purpose of this descriptive-exploratory study was to identify profiles of mental health among undergraduate nursing students to understand the relationship between student's mental health profiles and relevant risk and protective factors at the onset of COVID-19. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was employed to cull these students' mental health profiles (yielding 3 profiles) using data collected from 277 participants enrolled in a four-year BSN Program at a large, public institution in the Southeastern United States. Relational analyses of these profiles indicated that students who were the most vulnerable for mental health challenges also had the highest resilience and coping scores.

Though tertiary students studying health-related programs are assumed knowledgeable about family planning, this does not always translate to increased use of family planning services. In a cross-sectional survey, this study assessed 411 nursing, midwifery and allied health students' knowledge of family planning, contraceptive use, perceptions, and factors affecting the utilisation of family planning services. Each student completed a 24-itemised questionnaire in a Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing Survey. The data was analysed with Stata /IC version 16. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Overall knowledge of family planning was 99.7%, commonly gained in school (51.8%), followed by clinics and hospitals (41.4%). Only 21.7% of the students used family planning services. Menstrual cramps (57.9%), infertility (33.1%), and weight gain (32.5%) were the commonly perceived side effects of contraceptive use. The high proximity of participants to family planning service providers and lack of community, family, and partner acceptance of modern contraceptives were associated with underutilisation. Despite the high level of knowledge of family planning, the student's utilisation of family planning services was poor. To boost family planning service uptake among tertiary health students, it is essential to tackle barriers related to community, family, and partner acceptance. This can be achieved through educational programs that involve men in family planning discussions and by enhancing service accessibility.


Même si les étudiants du supérieur qui étudient dans des programmes liés à la santé sont censés connaître la planification familiale, cela ne se traduit pas toujours par une utilisation accrue des services de planification familiale. Dans le cadre d'une enquête transversale, cette étude a évalué les connaissances de 411 étudiants en soins infirmiers, obstétricaux et paramédicaux en matière de planification familiale, d'utilisation des contraceptifs, de perceptions et de facteurs affectant l'utilisation des services de planification familiale. Chaque étudiant a rempli un questionnaire en 24 points dans le cadre d'une enquête par entretien personnel assisté par ordinateur. Les données ont été analysées avec Stata/IC version 16. La signification statistique a été fixée à p<0,05. La connaissance globale de la planification familiale était de 99,7 %, généralement acquise à l'école (51,8 %), suivie par les cliniques et les hôpitaux (41,4 %). Seulement 21,7% des étudiants ont utilisé les services de planification familiale. Les crampes menstruelles (57,9 %), l'infertilité (33,1 %) et la prise de poids (32,5 %) étaient les effets secondaires couramment perçus de l'utilisation de contraceptifs. La grande proximité des participants avec les prestataires de services de planification familiale et le manque d'acceptation des contraceptifs modernes par la communauté, la famille et les partenaires étaient associés à la sous-utilisation. Malgré le niveau élevé de connaissances en matière de planification familiale, l'utilisation des services de planification familiale par les étudiants était faible. Pour stimuler le recours aux services de planification familiale parmi les étudiants de l'enseignement supérieur en santé, il est essentiel de s'attaquer aux obstacles liés à l'acceptation par la communauté, la famille et les partenaires. Cet objectif peut être atteint grâce à des programmes éducatifs qui impliquent les hommes dans les discussions sur la planification familiale et en améliorant l'accessibilité des services.

AIM: To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Palestinian nursing students towards pressure injury prevention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 455 nursing students recruited from Arab American University-Palestine, employing a total population sample. Data collection forms include socio-demographic information, the Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool, Attitude towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument and Pressure Injury Preventive Practices scale. RESULTS: The study found that students had a mean knowledge score of 54% (14.04/26), a positive attitude score of 75.8% (39.42/52), and demonstrated a fair level of practice 75.3% (30.12/40). Significant differences were observed in the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice total scores, linked to academic year, clinical experience, and the number of attended departments during clinical training (p < 0.001). Additionally, weak but significant positive relationships were found between practice and attitude scores (r = 0.303, p < 0.001), practice and knowledge score (r = 0.211, p < 0.001), and a moderate positive significant relationship between knowledge and attitude scores (r = 0.567, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The study revealed insufficient knowledge, positive attitudes, and somewhat unsafe practices among nursing students regarding pressure injury prevention. It highlights the need for specific revisions in the nursing curriculum. Improvements can be achieved through detailed coverage in classrooms and laboratories, integrating simulation methods. Additionally, ensuring that students gain adequate experiences in clinical units, with a specific emphasis on pressure injury prevention, is crucial for improving students' capability and contribute to better pressure injury management.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of pressure ulcers remains high in patients with moderate to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome, ventilated in the prone position. A digital platform, dedicated to prone positioning and skin/tissue damage education was developed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of the PRONEtect Education Hub versus a traditional lecture on final-year nursing students' confidence levels and knowledge in a non-inferiority study. DESIGN: A multicenter, non-blinded, parallel-group, non-inferiority study with equal randomization (1:1 allocation) was conducted at two nursing schools in Belgium. CLINICALTRIALS: gov (NCT05575869). METHODS: Following baseline assessments, the control group received a 1-h classroom lecture, and the experimental group gained access to the PRONEtect website. Three weeks later, participants completed the knowledge, confidence, and visual knowledge assessment. RESULTS: At baseline, 67 of the 80 participants completed the assessments and post-intervention, 28 and 27 participants respectively completed the confidence, knowledge, and visual knowledge assessments (dropout rate of 66.25%). Confidence levels: a mean ratio of relative change from baseline = 0.96 (Control (C)/Experimental (E)); 97.5% confidence interval (CI): 0.74 to 1.26; p = 0.74. Knowledge assessment: a mean difference in change from baseline = 1.58 (C-E); 97.5% CI: -0.58 to 3.75; p = 0.1. Although confidence and knowledge scores increased in both groups, the study cannot conclude non-inferiority. CONCLUSIONS: The trade-off between the inability to conclude efficacy of the impact of the website and the benefit of having an accessible educational platform on prone positioning and skin damage prevention makes the PRONEtect Education Hub an acceptable adjunct to traditional lecturing.

BACKGROUND: Limited research has been done on nursing students' awareness of racial disparities and their readiness to address bias and racism in clinical practice. PURPOSE: This study investigated nursing students' perceptions of how racial disparities affect health outcomes, including maternal outcomes, in the United States. METHODS: Interpretive description was used and supported by the critical race theory as a framework to guide the data collection, analysis, and interpretation to understand participants' perceptions surrounding racism and health disparities. DISCUSSION: Nurse educators should guide students to look beyond individual behavioral and risk factors and consider systemic issues as a leading contributors to health disparities. CONCLUSION: The most critical finding was the lack of participants' understanding of systemic racism and its impact on health disparities. While they often attributed racial disparities to low socioeconomic status and lack of education, they did not understand the relationships between social determinants of health and systemic racism.

AIM: The study aims to investigate the influence of the online education given to nursing undergraduate students using the Six Thinking Hat Method (STHM) on their knowledge and attitudes related to pressure injury (PI) prevention. METHODS: This pilot study was conducted between March-June 2023. The research sample consists of 25 participants in the intervention group and 25 in the control group. The intervention group received an online education carried out utilizing the STHM. Data were collected using the Student Demographic Information Form, the Turkish version of the Pressure Injury Knowledge Assessment Tool 2.0 (PIKAT 2.0-Tr), and the Attitude Towards the Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument (APuP). RESULTS: While there was no significant difference between the PIKAT 2.0-Tr and APuP mean scores of the groups at the pre-test measurements (p > 0.05), a difference was observed in favor of the intervention group in the first month (post-test 1) and third month (post-test 2) measurements (p < 0.05). The education provided through the STHM resulted in a meaningful and moderate effect, with an 11.7% increase in the PIKAT 2.0-Tr scores (η2 = 0.117; p = 0.003) and a substantial 29.5% increase in the APuP scores (η2 = 0.295; p = 0.000) for the students in the intervention group. CONCLUSION: It has been determined that the STHM, as an active teaching method, increases students' knowledge levels on PI prevention, supports the retention of knowledge, and enhances their attitudes. The STHM can be incorporated into nursing education as one of the innovative teaching methods.

INTRODUCTION: Half of the hospital-acquired pressure ulcers are associated with the use of medical devices. Nursing students provide care services to patients in clinical settings and intensive care units who have or are at risk for medical device-related pressure ulcers (MDRPUs). In the prevention and care of MDRPUs, the attitudes of nursing students towards preventing of pressure ulcers are as crucial as their knowledge level and clinical skills. AIM: The aim of this descriptive study is to assess the attitudes of final-year nursing undergraduate students towards preventing MDRPUs across cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of ABC model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of the study was handed between April 1 and December 31, 2021, with 147 final-year nursing students. Data were collected using the Student Information Form and the Attitude Towards Preventing Medical Device-Related Pressure Ulcers Questionnaire (ATP-MDRPUsQ). RESULTS: The mean attitude score towards preventing MDRPUs was 3.98 ± 0.45 on a 5-point Likert scale. The mean scores for the cognitive, affective, and behavioral sub-dimensions were 3.88 ± 0.57, 4.15 ± 0.51, and 4.00 ± 0.672, respectively. A moderate positive relationship was found between the cognitive sub-dimension and both the affective and behavioral sub-dimensions (r = 0.451; r = 0.302; p < 0.01, respectively). Based on cluster analysis, the mean attitude scores of students towards MDRPU prevention were grouped into two clusters. The students in Cluster-2 and female students had higher mean attitude scores (p < 0.01). The item with the lowest mean score in the questionnaire pertained to the item, "I believe that I need training on the etiology and prevention of medical device-related pressure ulcers." CONCLUSION: The general attitudes of final-year nursing students towards prevention MDRPU were satisfactory. However, their cognitive attitudes were less positive compared to their affective and behavioral attitudes. It is recommended to incorporate theoretical and practical courses focusing on the prevention of these injuries into nursing curricula to enhance students' knowledge and attitudes.

This descriptive qualitative study aimed to understand the feelings and thoughts experienced by 4th year midwifery students during the first birth they attended during clinical practice. Focus group interviews were conducted with 22 final year midwifery students in Istanbul, Türkiye December 2020. The transcribed data were analyzed by the descriptive qualitative analysis method. The students experienced not only negative feelings such as fear, torment, anxiety but also positive feelings such as hope, excitement, and curiosity during the first birth practice. The situations that caused negative feelings and thoughts were not only the feelings of the students but also the conditions that negatively affected the care provided to the patient in the clinic. The clinical practice environment affects the feelings and thoughts of midwifery students about the birth process. For this reason, improving the clinical practice environment and supporting students throughout the education process may contribute to the development of positive feelings and thoughts when attending as a student for their first birth suite placement.

OBJECTIVE: To: (1) assess whether rural clinical placements influence change in intention to practice rurally for nursing and allied health students, (2) to assess whether residential origin (metropolitan or rural) or university location (metropolitan or non-metropolitan) influence this change, and (3) assess residential origin of health professionals practicing rurally after graduation. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey (2014-2022) conducted in Northern/Northeastern Victoria and Grampians region by nursing and allied health students completing rural clinical placements. Survey explored student placement satisfaction, intention to practice rurally and demographic information, with a follow-up two years' post-placement. FINDINGS: Experience of a rural placement increased students' intention of practicing rurally. Importantly, 57% of metropolitan origin students studying at metropolitan campuses exhibited positive change. Logistic regression analysis suggested that after controlling for age, gender and satisfaction with placement and supervision, students of metropolitan origin at metropolitan campuses were 6.4 times more likely to report positive change in intent to practice rurally after placement than students of rural origin studying at non-metropolitan campuses.Follow-up data suggested that a substantial proportion of health professionals providing services in rural areas were of metropolitan origin. RESULTS: These findings concur that rural origin and rural training are important predictors of working rurally. Additionally, metropolitan students can change their intention to practice rurally after a rural placement. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports strategies to enhance intention to practice rurally that are not restricted to rural origin students to build rural workforce.

OBJECTIVE: To determine nursing students' views on attitudes towards distance education during coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. METHODS: The analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted in May and June 2022 at a state university in the Mediterranean region of Türkiye, and comprised nursing students. Data were collected using the Attitude Towards e- Learning Scale, e-Readiness for e-Learning and Expectations Scale, e-Satisfaction Scale, and University Alienation Scale. Data were analysed SPSS 26. RESULTS: Of the 322 participants, 213 (66.1%) were females, and 159 (49.4%) were staying in hostel dormitories. The mean age of the sample was 20.36±1.63 years. There was a significant, moderate and positive correlation between the students' scores from with respect to readiness, satisfaction, transmission, practicality and content of distance learning (p<0.05). There was a significant, weak and positive correlation of readiness with the education process, interaction and assessment values (p≤0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Alienation towards university education increased in relation to technology skills.

BACKGROUND: Nursing and midwifery students' perceptions and attitudes toward older adults affect their behaviours, career choices and/or the quality of care provided to older adults after graduation. This study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of second year nursing and midwifery students toward elderly people staying in nursing homes through metaphor analysis. METHODS: This qualitative study has used the phenomenological approach. The sample of the study consisted of 128 nursing and midwifery students by purposive sampling method. Students were prompted to complete a sentence to express their perceptions about the elderly living in nursing homes: 'The elderly in the nursing home is similar to … because …' Participants were required to fill in their responses in two stages, providing metaphors in the first blank and reasons for their metaphors in the second blank. RESULTS: The results indicated that five main themes and 12 sub-themes were obtained from student metaphors: (i) needing help in meeting their needs (need for care and need for love); (ii) the emotional burden of a life away from loved ones (loneliness, abandonment, and helplessness); (iii) exhaustion at the end of the road (end, loss, and unproductive); (iv) holding on to life again (friendship and beginning); and (v) post-traumatic growth (strong and experienced). CONCLUSION: Students should question how to create opportunities and increase interaction for the elderly in the age of changing and developing technology before graduation and should be trained as professional individuals who are willing for this purpose.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the outcomes of training nursing students in CPR skills using the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) program. METHODS: Nursing students (n=2,193) in 12 schools across the United States participated in this study. Students performed compressions and bag-masked ventilation on adult and infant manikins using the RQI simulation station without and then with feedback on their performance. RESULTS: With real-time, objective feedback from the RQI simulation station, students' performance of CPR skills improved, and they retained their skills over time. CONCLUSIONS: The RQI program and methodology of feedback is effective for training nursing students to be competent in CPR skills, essential for safe patient care. Nursing and other healthcare professions programs should consider adopting the RQI program for students to develop competency in CPR.

OBJECTIVES: This prospective cohort study evaluated the effect of unfolding case-based learning on undergraduate nursing students' self-perceived clinical decision-making ability. METHODS: Students' self-reported responses to Jenkins's Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale were compared between the unfolding case-based learning cohort (n=140) and the comparison cohort (n=126) at a school of nursing in the United States. RESULTS: The results revealed similar students' responses between the two study cohorts. However, unfolding case-based learning significantly increased students' perceived proficiency in "search for information and unbiased assimilation of new information". CONCLUSIONS: Findings from the present study highlight possibilities presented by unfolding case-based learning in undergraduate nursing education. The study supports that unfolding case studies can be introduced early on, and then nurtured throughout the undergraduate program to influence the development of nursing students' clinical decision-making skills.

OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate and compare the perceptions of nursing students regarding patient safety culture (PSC) during the COVID-19 pandemic in three Central European countries. METHODS: Data were collected from 624 nursing students between April and September 2021 using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture. RESULTS: The evaluation of the PSC dimensions did not reach the expected level of 75 %. Significant associations were found between the perception of the dimensions of the individual PSC and age, student status, study year, and clinical placement. The overall patient safety grade, the number of events reported, and the number of events reported by nursing students were significantly predicted by several dimensions of the PSC (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The evaluation of patient safety culture by nursing students offers a unique perspective. Students come with 'fresh eyes' and provide different perspectives that can provide healthcare leaders with a practical opportunity to identify blind spots, review and improve safety protocols, and foster a more inclusive culture that prioritizes patient safety.
