RESUMO

Here we report the liquid-solid interaction in droplet-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) for estimation of human Na+/K+levels. The exploitation of PVDF-HFP encapsulated WS2as active layer in the droplet-based TENG (DTENG) leads to the generation of electrical signal during the impact of water droplet. Comparison over the control devices indicates that surface quality and dielectric nature of the PVDF-HFP/WS2composite largely dictates the performance of the DTENG. The demonstration of excellent sensitivity of the DTENG towards water quality indicates its promising application towards water testing. In addition, the alteration in output signal with slightest variation in ionic concentration (Na+or K+) in water has been witnessed and is interpreted with charge transfer and ion transfer processes during liquid-solid interaction. The study reveals that the ion mobility largely affects the ion adsorption process on the active layer of PVDF-HFP/WS2and thus generates distinct output profiles for diverse ions like Na+and K+. Following that, the DTENG characteristics have been exploited to artificial urine where the varying output signals have been recorded for variation in urinary Na+ion concentration. Therefore, the deployment of PVDF-HFP/WS2in DTENG holds promising application towards the analyse of ionic characteristics of body fluids.

RESUMO

Copper levels in biological fluids are associated with Wilson's, Alzheimer's, Menke's, and Parkinson's diseases, making them good biochemical markers for these diseases. This study introduces a miniaturized screen-printed electrode (SPE) for the potentiometric determination of copper(II) in some biological fluids. Manganese(III) oxide nanoparticles (Mn2O3-NPs), dispersed in Nafion, are drop-casted onto a graphite/PET substrate, serving as the ion-to-electron transducer material. The solid-contact material is then covered by a selective polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane incorporated with 18-crown-6 as a neutral ion carrier for the selective determination of copper(II) ions. The proposed electrode exhibits a Nernstian response with a slope of 30.2 ± 0.3 mV/decade (R2 = 0.999) over the linear concentration range 5.2 × 10-9 - 6.2 × 10-3 mol/l and a detection limit of 1.1 × 10-9 mol/l (69.9 ng/l). Short-term potential stability is evaluated using constant current chronopotentiometry (CP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A significant improvement in the electrode capacitance (91.5 µF) is displayed due to the use of Mn2O3-NPs as a solid contact. The presence of Nafion, with its high hydrophobicity properties, eliminates the formation of the thin water layer, facilitating the ion-to-electron transduction between the sensing membrane and the conducting substrate. Additionally, it enhances the adhesion of the polymeric sensing membrane to the solid-contact material, preventing membrane delamination and increasing the electrode's lifespan. The high selectivity, sensitivity, and potential stability of the proposed miniaturized electrode suggests its use for the determination of copper(II) ions in human blood serum and milk samples. The results obtained agree fairly well with data obtained by flameless atomic absorption spectrometry.

RESUMO

CoFe@C was first prepared by calcining the precursor of CoFe-metal-organic framework-74 (CoFe-MOF-74), then an electrochemical sensor for the determination of neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC) was constructed, which was stemmed from the novel CoFe@C/Nafion composite film modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The CoFe@C/Nafion composite was verified by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to evaluate its electrical properties as a modified material for an electrochemical sensor. Compared with CoFe-MOF-74 precursor modified electrode, CoFe@C/Nafion electrode exhibited a great synergic catalytic effect and extremely increased the oxidation peak signal of NHDC. The effects of various experimental conditions on the oxidation of NHDC were investigated and the calibration plot was tested. The results bespoken that CoFe@C/Nafion GCE has good reproducibility and anti-interference under the optimal experimental conditions. In addition, the differential pulse current response of NHDC was linear with its concentration within the range 0.08 ~ 20 µmol/L, and the linear regression coefficient was 0.9957. The detection limit was as low as 14.2 nmol/L (S/N = 3). In order to further verify the feasibility of the method, it was successfully used to determine the content of NHDC in Chinese medicine, with a satisfactory result, good in accordance with that of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

RESUMO

To make outdoor clothing water- or dirt-repellent, durable water-repellent (DWR) coatings based on side-chain fluorinated polymers (SFPs) are used. During use of outdoor clothing, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) can be emitted from the DWR to the environment. In this study, the effects of aging, washing, and tumble drying on the concentration of extractable PFASs in the DWR of perfluorohexane-based short-chain SFPs (FC-6 chemistry) and of perfluorooctane-based long-chain SFPs (FC-8 chemistry) were assessed. For this purpose, polyamide (PA) and polyester (PES) fabrics were coated with FC-6- and FC-8-based DWRs. Results show that aging of the coated fabrics causes an increase in concentration and formation of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs). The effect of aging on the volatile PFASs depends on the type of fabric. Washing causes a decrease in PFAA concentrations, and in general, volatile PFASs are partly washed out of the textiles. However, washing can also increase the extractable concentration of volatile PFASs in the fabrics. This effect becomes stronger by a combination of aging and washing. Tumble drying does not affect the PFAS concentrations in textiles. In conclusion, aging and washing of fabrics coated with the DWR based on SFPs release PFASs to the environment.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: To study the mid-term safety and functional outcomes of transvaginal anterior vaginal wall prolapse repair using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) mesh (DynaMesh®-PR4) by the double trans-obturator technique (TOT). METHODS: Between 2015 and 2020, we prospectively included women with symptomatic high-stage anterior vaginal wall prolapse with or without uterine prolapse or stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in the study. The patients underwent transvaginal repair of the prolapse using PVDF mesh in two medical centers. We followed all patients for at least 12 months. We recorded the characteristics of vaginal and sexual symptoms, urinary incontinence, and prolapse stage pre- and postoperatively using International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Vaginal Symptoms (ICIQ-VS), International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence-Short Form (ICIQ-UI-SF), and Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) system, respectively. RESULTS: One hundred eight women were included in the final analysis with a mean follow-up time of 34.5 ± 18.6 months. The anatomical success was achieved in 103 (95.4%) patients. There was a significant improvement in patients' vaginal symptoms, urinary incontinence, and quality of life scores postoperatively (p < 0.0001). Only six patients (5.5%) had mesh extrusion, five of whom were managed successfully. The total rates of complications and de novo urinary symptoms were 21.3% and 7.4%, respectively. Significant pain was reported in 17 cases (15.7%). CONCLUSION: Our findings show that using PVDF mesh in the double TOT technique for anterior vaginal wall prolapse repair is a safe procedure with high anatomic and functional success rates and acceptable complication rates in mid-term follow-up.

RESUMO

Fluoropolymers have unique physicochemical properties such as hydrophobicity and lipophobicity, good chemical stability and bio-inertness, low surface energy and phase segregation. Owing to these properties, fluoropolymers have been widely used to prepare high performance materials. Especially, the use of fluoropolymers in biomedical applications has grown rapidly during the past decade. This critical review focuses on the recent advances of fluoropolymers in gene delivery, cytosolic protein delivery, drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, photodynamic therapy, anti-fouling and anti-bacterial applications, and tissue engineering. The mechanisms and features of fluoropolymers in these specific applications are discussed. Besides, we have reviewed the methods to synthesize water-soluble fluoropolymers for the applications and explained their supramolecular assembly behaviors in solutions. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of fluoropolymers in biomedical applications are discussed.

RESUMO

A microfluidic, label-free optical sensor for water pollutants, which is based on a packed micro-column of microspheres with refractive index similar to that of water, is presented. The perfluoropolyether microspheres are synthetized by membrane emulsification followed by UV irradiation. The microfluidic channel hosting the packed column is transparent when filled with pure water as a consequence of refractive index matching, whereas it scatters light in presence of compounds with lipophilic moieties that spontaneously adsorb on the fluorinated microspheres. The device is characterized by investigating the response to cationic and anionic surfactants. Both the signal growth rate and the recovery rate measured during washing with water depend on the type and concentration of the compounds. The cationic surfactants tested display a larger signal increase, linearly scaling with concentration. A limit of detection of 1 µM is obtained in the current configuration. The water index-matched microspheres enable to access an additional analytical parameter, that is the propagation velocity of the scattering signal along the column. This parameter is also found to scale linearly with concentration, hence providing a complementary analytical tool sensitive to the adhesion kinetics.

RESUMO

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and its copolymer with trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) are considered as promising biomaterials for supporting nerve regeneration because of their proven biocompatibility and piezoelectric properties that could stimulate cell ingrowth due to their electrical activity upon mechanical deformation. For the first time, this study reports on the comparative analysis of PVDF and P(VDF-TrFE) electrospun scaffolds in terms of structural and piezoelectric properties as well as their in vitro performance. A dynamic impact test machine was developed, validated, and utilised, to evaluate the generation of an electrical voltage upon the application of an impact load (varying load magnitude and frequency) onto the electrospun PVDF (15-20 wt%) and P(VDF-TrFE) (10-20 wt%) scaffolds. The cytotoxicity and in vitro performance of the scaffolds was evaluated with neonatal rat (nrSCs) and adult human Schwann cells (ahSCs). The neurite outgrowth behaviour from sensory rat dorsal root ganglion neurons cultured on the scaffolds was analysed qualitatively. The results showed (i) a significant increase of the ß-phase content in the PVDF after electrospinning as well as a zeta potential similar to P(VDF-TrFE), (ii) a non-constant behaviour of the longitudinal piezoelectric strain constant d33, depending on the load and the load frequency, and (iii) biocompatibility with cultured Schwann cells and guiding properties for sensory neurite outgrowth. In summary, the electrospun PVDF-based scaffolds, representing piezoelectric activity, can be considered as promising materials for the development of artificial nerve conduits for the peripheral nerve injury repair.

RESUMO

Oxycodone is a strong opioid frequently used as an analgesic. Although proven efficacious in the management of moderate to severe acute pain and cancer pain, use of oxycodone imposes a risk of adverse effects such as addiction, overdose, and death. Fast and accurate determination of oxycodone blood concentration would enable personalized dosing and monitoring of the analgesic as well as quick diagnostics of possible overdose in emergency care. However, in addition to the parent drug, several metabolites are always present in the blood after a dose of oxycodone, and to date, there is no electrochemical data available on any of these metabolites. In this paper, a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) electrode and a Nafion-coated SWCNT electrode were used, for the first time, to study the electrochemical behavior of oxycodone and its two main metabolites, noroxycodone and oxymorphone. Both electrode types could selectively detect oxycodone in the presence of noroxycodone and oxymorphone. However, we have previously shown that addition of a Nafion coating on top of the SWCNT electrode is essential for direct measurements in complex biological matrices. Thus, the Nafion/SWCNT electrode was further characterized and used for measuring clinically relevant concentrations of oxycodone in buffer solution. The limit of detection for oxycodone with the Nafion/SWCNT sensor was 85 nM, and the linear range was 0.5-10 µM in buffer solution. This study shows that the fabricated Nafion/SWCNT sensor has potential to be applied in clinical concentration measurements.

RESUMO

We report a microfluidic paper based analytical device implementing ion concentration polarization (ICP) for rapid pre-concentration of Escherichia coli in water. The fabricated device consists of a paper channel with a Nafion® membrane and in-built micro wire electrodes to supply electric voltage to induce the ICP effect. E. coli cells were stained with SYTO 9 and fluorescence was used as a sensing method. The device achieved high concentration factor up to 2 × 105 within minutes. The effect of total ion concentration, on ICP and fluorescence intensity was studied. The reported device and method are suitable and effective for detection of E. coli during ballast water quality monitoring, coastal water quality monitoring where high salinity water is present.

RESUMO

The manufacturing of conventional enzymatic biosensors produced via a layer-by-layer (LbL) approach requires expensive instrumentation, and in most cases involves a complex, resource and time-consuming fabrication process. Moreover, LbL assemblies are prone to mechanical instability that leads to irreversible changes in sensor architecture and morphology resulting in degradation of enzymatic activities and insufficient signal reproducibility. Hence, novel fabrication techniques for the production of enzymatic biosensors that are instrumentally controlled and allow reproducible, simultaneous multi-analyte detection with high specificity, temporal and spatial resolution are greatly required. Herein, we report on the development of a novel, fully instrumentally controlled, one-step synthesis approach for the production of nanoparticle-based enzymatic biosensors. The approach relies on a simultaneous encapsulation of the enzyme (glucose and alcohol oxidases), a fluoropolymer (Nafion) and noble metal nanoparticles via co-deposition from a phosphate multiple electrolyte on top of the sensor surface. Remarkably, electrochemical studies revealed that nanoparticle-based biosensors produced by this novel fabrication approach display a significantly enhanced mechanical stability (more than several orders of magnitude higher) without loss of biological activity or leakage of the enzyme or Nafion, and advanced synthesis reproducibility (40 times higher) in comparison to LbL analogues.

RESUMO

The sensitivity and response time of glutamate sensors based on glutamate oxidase immobilized on planar platinum microelectrodes have been improved to near the theoretical performance limits predicted by a detailed mathematical model. Microprobes with an array of electroenzymatic sensing sites have emerged as useful tools for the monitoring of glutamate and other neurotransmitters in vivo; and implemented as such, they can be used to study many complex neurological diseases and disorders including Parkinson's disease and drug addiction. However, less than optimal sensitivity and response time has limited the spatiotemporal resolution of these promising research tools. A mathematical model has guided systematic improvement of an electroenzymatic glutamate microsensor constructed with a 1-2 µm-thick crosslinked glutamate oxidase layer and underlying permselective coating of polyphenylenediamine and Nafion reduced to less than 200 nm thick. These design modifications led to a nearly 6-fold improvement in sensitivity to 320 ± 20 nA µM-1 cm-2 at 37 °C and a ∼10-fold reduction in response time to 80 ± 10 ms. Importantly, the sensitivity and response times were attained while maintaining a low detection limit and excellent selectivity. Direct measurement of the transport properties of the enzyme and polymer layers used to create the biosensors enabled improvement of the mathematical model as well. Subsequent model simulations indicated that the performance characteristics achieved with the optimized biosensors approach the theoretical limits predicted for devices of this construction. Such high-performance glutamate biosensors will be more effective in vivo at a size closer to cellular dimension and will enable better correlation of glutamate signaling events with electrical recordings.

RESUMO

With the rapid growth and appearance of novel psychoactive substances (NPS) onto the global drug market, the need for alternative screening methodologies for implementation within clinical environments is substantial. The immunoassay methods currently in use are inadequate for this new drug trend with the potential for misdiagnosis and subsequent administration of incorrect patient treatment increased. This contribution illustrates a strong proof-of-concept for the use of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) as a screening methodology for NPS within biological fluids, using the hallucinogen scopolamine as a model compound. A low cost, easy-to-use and portable sensor has been developed and successfully employed for the detection of scopolamine at clinically relevant concentrations within a variety of biological matrices, including human pooled serum, urine, artificial saliva and sweat, without any prior sample preparation required. Moreover, assessment of the sensor's potential as a point-of-care wearable device was performed with sample collection from the surface of skin, demonstrating its capability for the qualitative identification of scopolamine despite collection of only minimal volumes off the skins surface. The developed sensor described herein exhibits a strong proof-of-concept for the employment of such ECL sensors as point-of-care devices, where the sensors ease of use and removal of time-consuming and complex sample preparation methods will ultimately increase its usability by physicians, widening the avenues where ECL sensors could be employed.

RESUMO

New processing routes and materials for non-biocidal, antifouling (AF) coatings with an improved performance are currently much sought after for a range of marine applications. Here, the processing, physical properties and marine AF performance of a fluorinated coating based on a thermoplastic (non-crosslinked) fluorinated polymer are reported. It was found that the addition of lubricating oil and hydrodynamic drag reducing microstructures improved the AF properties substantially, i.e. the settlement of a marine biofilm, containing mixed microalgae including diatoms, was reduced to low levels. More importantly, the remaining fouling was removed from the coatings at low hydrodynamic shear rates and promising AF properties were obtained. Moreover, additional potential benefits were revealed originating from the thermoplastic nature of the coating material which might result in significant cost reductions.

RESUMO

This study focuses on developing a highly sensitive immunosensor by immobilizing oxidized carbon nanohorns/Nafion/Fe3O4@Pd nanocomposite on carbon screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) for the detection of tropomyosin (Tro-Ag). The performance of the fabricated immunosensor was investigated via electrochemiluminescence (ECL) method, resulting from the chemical reaction between tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) chloride ([Ru(bpy)3]Cl2) and tripropylamine (TPrA), and the peak intensity is recorded at 1.0 V. The nanocomposite is able to enhance the ECL intensity of [Ru(bpy)3]2 +/TPrA system and achieves high sensitivity of 28.16 fg/mL with a dynamic working range of 28.16 fg/mL to 100 ng/ml.. Furthermore, the immunosensor demonstrated a decent stability and good repeatability for Tro-Ag detection in food products. RESUMO

In this study, the potentiometric arrayed glucose biosensors, which were based on zinc oxide (ZnO) or aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) sensing membranes, were fabricated by using screen-printing technology and a sputtering system, and graphene oxide (GO) and Nafion-glucose oxidase (GOx) were used to modify sensing membranes by using the drop-coating method. Next, the material properties were characterized by using a Raman spectrometer, a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and a scanning probe microscope (SPM). The sensing characteristics of the glucose biosensors were measured by using the voltage-time (V-T) measurement system. Finally, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was conducted to analyze their charge transfer abilities. The results indicated that the average sensitivity of the glucose biosensor based on Nafion-GOx/GO/AZO was apparently higher than that of the glucose biosensor based on Nafion-GOx/GO/ZnO. In addition, the glucose biosensor based on Nafion-GOx/GO/AZO exhibited an excellent average sensitivity of 15.44 mV/mM and linearity of 0.997 over a narrow range of glucose concentration range, a response time of 26 s, a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.89 mM, and good reproducibility. In terms of the reversibility and stability, the hysteresis voltages (VH) were 3.96 mV and 2.42 mV. Additionally, the glucose biosensor also showed good anti-inference ability and reproducibility. According to these results, it is demonstrated that AZO is a promising material, which could be used to develop a reliable, simple, and low-cost potentiometric glucose biosensor.

RESUMO

The salt permeability through three commercial cation-exchange membranes with different morphologies is investigated in aqueous NaCl solutions. Ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) find application in different processes such as electrodialysis, reverse osmosis, diffusion dialysis, membrane electrolysis, membrane fuel cells and ion exchange bioreactors. The aim of this paper is the experimental determination of the electrolyte permeability in the following membranes: MK-40 membrane, Nafion N324 membrane and Nafion 117 membrane. The latter is selected as being a reference membrane. The effect of an increase in the NaCl concentration in the solutions on membranes transport properties is analyzed. With regard to membranes sorption, a decrease in the water content was observed when the external electrolyte concentration is increased. Concerning permeation through the membranes, the salt permeability increased with concentration for the Nafion 117 membrane and remained nearly constant for the other two membranes. A close relation between the degree of liquid sorption by the membranes and the electrolyte permeability was observed.

RESUMO

Materials often contain minor heterogeneous phases that are difficult to characterize yet nonetheless significantly influence important properties. Here we describe a solid-state NMR strategy for quantifying minor heterogenous sample regions containing dilute, essentially uncoupled nuclei in materials where the remaining nuclei experience heteronuclear dipolar couplings. NMR signals from the coupled nuclei are dephased while NMR signals from the uncoupled nuclei can be amplified by one or two orders of magnitude using Carr-Meiboom-Purcell-Gill (CPMG) acquisition. The signal amplification by CPMG can be estimated allowing the concentration of the uncoupled spin regions to be determined even when direct observation of the uncoupled spin NMR signal in a single pulse experiment would require an impractically long duration of signal averaging. We use this method to quantify residual graphitic carbon using 13C CPMG NMR in poly(carbon monofluoride) samples synthesized by direct fluorination of carbon from various sources. Our detection limit for graphitic carbon in these materials is better than 0.05 mol%. The accuracy of the method is discussed and comparisons to other methods are drawn.

RESUMO

Nafion membranes are still the dominating material used in the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) technologies. They are widely used in several applications thanks to their excellent properties: high proton conductivity and high chemical stability in both oxidation and reduction environment. However, they have several technical challenges: reactants permeability, which results in reduced performance, dependence on water content to perform preventing the operation at higher temperatures or low humidity levels, and chemical degradation. This paper reviews novel composite membranes that have been developed for PEM applications, including direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), hydrogen PEM fuel cells (PEMFCs), and water electrolysers (PEMWEs), aiming at overcoming the drawbacks of the commercial Nafion membranes. It provides a broad overview of the Nafion-based membranes, with organic and inorganic fillers, and non-fluorinated membranes available in the literature for which various main properties (proton conductivity, crossover, maximum power density, and thermal stability) are reported. The studies on composite membranes demonstrate that they are suitable for PEM applications and can potentially compete with Nafion membranes in terms of performance and lifetime.

RESUMO

Catalyst layer (CL) ionomers control several transport and interfacial phenomena including long-range transport of protons, local transport of oxygen to Pt catalyst, effective utilization of Pt catalyst, electrochemical reaction kinetics and double-layer capacitance. In this work, the variation of these properties, as a function of humidity, for CLs made with two ionomers differing in side-chain length and equivalent weight, Nafion-1100 and Aquivion-825, was investigated. This is the first study to examine humidity-dependent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics in-situ for CLs with different ionomers. A significant finding is the observation of higher ORR kinetic activity (A/cm2Pt) for the Aquivion-825 CL than for the Nafion-1100 CL. This is attributed to differences in the interfacial protonic concentrations at Pt/ionomer interface in the two CLs. The differences in Pt/ionomer interface is also noted in a higher local oxygen transport resistance for Aquivion-825 CLs compared to Nafion-1100 CLs, consistent with stronger interaction between ionomer and Pt for ionomer with more acid groups. Similar dependency on Pt utilization (ratio of electrochemically active area at any relative humidity (RH) to that at 100% RH) as a function of RH is observed for the two CLs. As expected, strong influence of humidity on proton conduction is observed. Amongst the two, the CL with high equivalent weight ionomer (Nafion-1100) exhibits higher conduction.
