RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Mesiodentes are usually found in the central position of the upper or lower jaw as supernumerary teeth. Here, we obtained 10 mesiodentes and three permanent teeth (PT) and separated the dental pulp (DP) from these into crown and root portions. We then characterized and compared the isolated crown portion-derived cells (crown cells) with root portion-derived cells (root cells) using a range of in vitro assays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Crown cells and root cells were examined for cell surface marker expression, colony-forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F), cell proliferation, cell cycle characteristics and markers, and osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation. RESULTS: The proportion of CD105-positive cells (CD105(+) cells) in the crown cells vs the root cells varied among the mesiodentes, but not among the PT. When there were more CD105(+) cells in the root cells than in the crown cells, the root cells showed higher CFU-F, proliferation capacity, and osteogenic differentiation capacity. In contrast, when the crown cells contained more CD105(+) cells than the root cells, the crown cells showed the higher CFU-F, proliferation capacity, and osteogenic differentiation capacity. In addition, the sorted CD105(+) cells showed higher CFU-F and proliferation capacity than the sorted CD105(-) cells. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that proportion of CD105(+) cells is an effective means of characterizing DP-derived cells in mesiodentes.

RESUMO

Nuclear protein of the testis (NUT) midline carcinomas (NMC) are malignant epithelial tumours that have chromosomal rearrangements of the gene encoding NUT at 15q14. NMC is typically an aggressive fatal cancer, clinically overlaps with other carcinomas, and differential diagnosis is difficult. The purpose of this study was to investigate NMC in poorly differentiated oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with a retrospective analysis based on anti-C52B1 immunohistochemical staining. An anti-C52B1 antibody was used for immunohistochemical staining in all 27 primary tumours, and the prevalence and pathological features of NMC in the oral cavity were examined. Only two of 27 cases (7.4%) were C52B1 immunopositive. Both positive patients were women aged 38 and 43 years - younger than the other C52B1-negative patients, whose average age was 65.6 years (range 41-83). The primary sites were the right side of the floor of the mouth and the left side of the tongue. They had a poor prognosis and died within 8 months postoperation compared with the median overall survival time of 60.2 months for patients with other poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The pathological findings of their primary tumours were similar to typical poorly differentiated OSCC.

RESUMO

A new interferometer is installed on the west anchor cell of the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror. In GAMMA 10, we have used a heterodyne-type interferometer with a 70-GHz IMPATT oscillator and a 150-MHz oscillator for frequency modulation. The new interferometer consists of a 17.5-GHz phase locked dielectric resonator oscillator and a 37.5-MHz temperature-compensated crystal oscillator, as well as frequency multipliers. The main motivation for the new interferometer using frequency multipliers is to achieve a stable and cost effective interferometer. Direct anchor heating experiments with new anchor ion cyclotron range of frequency antennas in both the west and the east anchor cells are carried out. Density increases in both anchor cells are clearly observed using the new interferometer.
