RESUMO

PURPOSE: A cross-sectional study was designed to investigate the possible association between Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) scores and striatal dopamine uptake in the early stages of Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: Two groups of PD patients (n = 464) and healthy controls (HC) (n = 162) were enrolled in the current study from the Parkinson's progression markers initiative cohort ( https://www.ppmi-info.org ). All the subjects were evaluated for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) using the ESS. They also completed specific measures to be assessed for motor and non-motor symptoms, including cognitive, gait, autonomic, and olfactory dysfunction. Dopamine transporter (DaT) scans were used to identify dopamine transporter impairments. Spatial normalization for DaTscan imaging of participants was performed to reach consistent orientation. RESULTS: A significant correlation was found between ESS score and right putamen (P < 0.001; correlation coefficient = 0.186) and left putamen (P = 0.003; correlation coefficient = 0.139) dopamine uptake in PD patients. The same results were revealed after adjusted Pearson's correlation for the effects of handedness, age, gender, and education. No significant correlation was found between the ESS score and the amount of caudate nucleus dopamine uptake in PD patients. Moreover, there was a significant association between caudate nucleus dopamine uptake and ESS score in neither PD patients nor HCs. CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study suggest that increased dopaminergic function of putamen nuclei may be associated with ESS scores in the early stages of PD. Further studies are needed at different PD stages and evaluate PD progression as a possible confounder.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that the hippocampus (HC) is involved in cognitive and behavioral functions beyond memory. We aimed to investigate how the volume of each subfield of the HC is associated with distinct patterns of coping strategies, emotion regulation, and impulsivity in a healthy population. METHODS: We studied a total of 218 healthy subjects using the Leipzig mind-brain-body dataset. Participants were assessed for coping strategies, emotion regulation, and impulsivity using the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced (COPE), Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS), and Behavioral Activation and Inhibition System (BAS/BIS). The associations between HC subfield volumes including CA1, CA2/3, CA4/DG, SR-SL-SM, and subiculum, and behavioral scores were examined using multiple linear regression models adjusted for possible confounders, including age, sex, years of education, handedness, total intracranial volume (ICV), and HC volume. RESULTS: The use of emotional support, venting, and positive reframing coping strategies were significantly and positively correlated with total, total right, and total left HC volumes. Venting was significantly associated with CA1 after adjusting for age, sex, handedness, and education (P=0.001, B = 0.265, P-FDR = 0.005). No significant association was observed between CERQ subscales and HC subfield volumes after controlling for confounders and multiple analyses. However, sensation-seeking subscale of the UPPS-P was positively correlated with total and right CA2-CA3 volumes after adjustments for age, sex, handedness, ICV, and HC volumes (P=0.002, B = 0.266, P-FDR = 0.035). BAS and BIS subscales did not show significant relationship with HC subfield volumes. CONCLUSION: Patterns of HC subfields volumes are associated with coping strategies, impulsivity, and emotion regulation. In particular, using emotional support, positive reframing, venting, and sensation seeking are significantly associated with certain HC subfield volumes. These findings suggest that the hippocampus may play a crucial role in modulating emotional responses and behavioral adaptations, offering potential targets for therapeutic interventions.

RESUMO

The devastating characteristic of COVID-19 pandemic calls for immediate and effective solutions to tackle it. Vaccines seem to be the only promising and effective way to fight against the novel coronavirus - even against new mutated variants. Because of the rapid development and distribution of numerous COVID-19 vaccines in different platforms, meticulous evaluation of vaccines' safety is more critical than ever - especially given the fact that most of the candidates have not completed the clinical phase. Therefore, to optimize the vaccines' safety and efficacy, it is highly important to carefully report and scientifically discuss the serious adverse effects following vaccination. In this respect, we discuss different neurological and neuropsychological adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines including demyelinating diseases, Bell's palsy (BP), cerebrovascular complications, seizures, functional neurological disorders (FNDs), and some other rare adverse events, and hypothetical mechanisms which can lead to the reported side effects. Given the fact that the incidence of such events are rare and most of them are treatable, the current review aims to shed light on how much the relationship between COVID-19 vaccines and these complications can be reliable and provide an insight for future studies with much more meticulous methodologies to discuss the possible correlational or causal relationship between these complications and COVID-19 vaccines and elucidate whether or not the neurological side effects of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines can count as a considerable threat to public health.
