RESUMO

Programmed death-1 (PD1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) have a vital role in immune checkpoint pathways. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of PD1 and CTLA4 have been reported to be associated with susceptibility to certain autoimmune diseases and cancers. The potential association between SNPs in these immune checkpoint genes and risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) still unclear. The aim of this study is to clarify the effect of PD1 and CTLA4 SNPs on the risk of developing ALL and the prognosis of the disease. The study was performed on 100 pediatric B-ALL patients and 100 controls. The PD1 and CTLA4 SNPs were examined by RFLP technique. The study revealed that CTLA4 (rs11571316) was associated with high risk of B-ALL developments OR 1.492 (CI: 1157 to 1924) (P=0.002). PD1 (rs36084323) GA genotype was significantly associated with protective effect against nonremission (P=0.007). PD1 (rs36084323) A allele were associated with protective effect against relapse (P=0.008). CTLA4 and PD1 genotypes did not have significant impact on B-ALL patients outcome. The current study displayed for the first time that genetic variations of the CTLA-4, was associated with susceptibility to B-ALL and that PD1 (rs36084323) GA genotype was significantly associated with protective effect against nonremission, while PD1 (rs36084323) A allele was associated with protective effect against relapse.

BACKGROUND: Dromedaries' normal heart architecture and size have not been adequately examined utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and topographic anatomy. RESULT: we aimed to investigate the regular appearance of the heart and its dimensions, using MRI and cross-sectional anatomy, in mature Arabian one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius). We also analyzed hematological and cardiac biochemical markers. MRI scans were conducted on twelve camel heart cadavers using a closed 1.5-Tesla magnet with fast spin echo (FSE) weighted sequences. Subsequently, the hearts were cross-sectionally sliced. Additionally, hematobiochemical studies were conducted on ten mature live camels. The study analyzed standard cardiac dimensions including HL, BW, RA, LA, RV, LV, IVS, LAD, RAD, RVD, AoD, TCVD, and MVD. The results showed a strong positive correlation between the cardiac dimensions obtained from both gross analysis and MR images, with no significant difference between them. On both gross and MRI images, the usual structures of the heart were identified and labeled. Along with the cardiac markers (creatine kinase and troponin), the average hematological values and standard biochemical parameters were also described. CONCLUSION: According to what we know, this investigation demonstrates, for the first time the typical heart structures and dimensions of the heart in dromedaries, and it could serve as a basis for diagnosing cardiac disorders in these animals.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to explore whether domestication could lead to evolutionary changes towards flightlessness in the domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) compared to the cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) as a nonflying and flying biological model, respectively. Bones of the pectoral girdle (scapula, clavicle, and coracoid) and the foramen triosseum were comparatively assessed using anatomical, radiographic, and 3D computed tomographic (CT) studies. Additionally, the muscles pectoralis and the supracoracoideus were histologically and immunohistochemically assessed. RESULTS: Among the differences observed, radiographically, the distance between the paired clavicles was significantly wider (p < 0.05) in the domestic duck (mean ± SD 1.43 ± 0.23 cm) compared with the cattle egret (0.96 ± 0.13 cm). Unlike cattle egrets, there was no connection between the sternum and the hypocladium of furcula in domestic ducks. The scapula, clavicle, coracoid, sternum, and humerus were considerably longer in domestic ducks than in cattle egrets. The foramen triosseum appeared significantly (p < 0.01) wider in domestic ducks (0.7 ± 1.17 cm) compared to cattle egrets (0.49 ± 0.03 cm). Histologically, compared to cattle egrets, the muscle fibers in domestic ducks were loosely connected and contained fewer nuclei and perimysial/endomysial spaces. A higher myoglobin expression was evident in cattle egrets compared with domestic ducks. CONCLUSIONS: Results of this study indicate that the bones and muscles of the pectoral girdle generally show specific morphological and structural changes reflective of the loss of prerequisites associated with flight behavior in domestic ducks due to domestication effects compared to cattle egrets.

The role of cortactin in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) tissue infiltration has been previously reported. However, its impact on patients' responsiveness to therapy and patient's outcome was not previously addressed. This study was conducted on 60 T-ALL pediatric patients at diagnosis and 10 nonleukemic controls. Cortactin and HS1 expressions were identified by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Cortactin and HS1 expression were significantly higher in T-All patients as compared with controls as well as postinduction levels (P≤0.001 for both). The high cortactin expression was significantly associated with high peripheral white cell counts (P≤0.001), blood blast cells (P≤0.001) and central nervous system (CNS) infiltration (P≤0.001), and early precursor T-ALL subtype (P≤0.001) as compared with the remaining groups. The induction of remission response was significantly higher in T-ALL patients with lower cortactin expression levels as compared with T-ALL patients with higher one (P≤0.001). The high cortactin and HS1 expressions were significantly predictors of CNS infiltrations (hazard ratios [HR]: 1.051, confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.13, P=0.04 and HR: 1.87, CI: 1.23-2.091, P=0.002, respectively) and bone marrow relapse (HR: 1.43, CI: 1.18-1.92, P=0.004 and HR: 1.07, CI: 1.01-1.24, P=0.002, respectively). Furthermore, high cortactin expression levels were associated with shorter B-ALL patients' overall survival as compared with those with lower cortactin levels (P=0.002). In conclusion, high expression of cortactin and/or HS1 at diagnosis is a bad prognostic marker of T-ALL patients' outcome. Moreover, cortactin and/or HS1 expression could be used as a biomarker for refining risk stratification of T-ALL.

BACKGROUND: Deregulation of immune checkpoint is an important point in cancer evolution as well as patients outcome. T-cells is an important arm in immunity against cancer. This study aimed to assess CTLA4/LAG3 expression on different T-cell subsets and its effect on disease outcome. METHODS: This study included 81 newly diagnosed Egyptian adult AML patients. For each one of the patients CTLA4/ LAG3 expression on T-cell subsets was identified by flowcytometry before start of induction chemotherapy. RESULTS: Total CD3 count in AML patients was lower than control. LAG3 expression were significantly higher in total CD3, T-cell subsets (CD4, CD8) as compared to healthy control. Moreover, co-expression of LAG3/CTLA4 on T-cell subsets were significantly higher in AML as compared to healthy control . NPM-/ FLT3+ was significantly associated with high LAG3 expression in T-cells subsets as compared to other molecular subtypes. Shorter OS, DFS were significantly associated with higher expression of LAG3 on T-cells subsets as compared to patients harbor low expression. COX regression analysis revealed that high expression of CD3/LAG3, CD4/LAG3, CD8/LAG4, CD3/CTLA4/LAG3 were considered a poor prognostic risk factor. CONCLUSION: High LAG3/CTLA4 expression could predict AML Patients' outcome Conclusion: Our findings indicated that high expression of LAG3/CTL4 on T cells subsets identify a subgroup of AML patients with poor prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the most prevalent adult leukemia that occurs in older patients and presents a variable course of the disease. Risk stratification of CLL is a matter of continuous improvement. Thus, this study aimed to assess the impact of the quantification of 17p del and 11q del cytogenetic subclones on the outcome of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a prospective study that involved 100 subjects with CLL. For all included patients; assessment of the cytogenetic subclones burden for 17p del and 11q del using the FISH technique was carried out. RESULTS: CLL patients with a high 17p del (>33%) cytogenetic subclone burden showed significantly shorter lymphocyte doubling time (LDT), time to first treatment (TTFT), and progression free survival (PFS) compared to those with a lower burden. On contrary 11q del subclone(>30%) burden had an insignificant impact on LDT, TTFT and PFS. CONCLUSION: Quantification of 17pdel burden (>vs.≤33%) could be used for refining risk stratification of CLL patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to address the prognostic impact of SOX2 and OCT3/4 expression on adult acute leukemia patients' outcomes. METHODS: SOX2 and OCT3/4 expression by blast cells were evaluated by flow cytometry in 80 acute leukemia patients and 8 healthy controls. RESULTS: Baseline SOX2 and OCT3/4 expression were significantly higher in both ALL (P = < 0.001, P = 0.005 respectively) and AML patients (P < 0.001, P = 0.003 respectively) as compared to control, and decline at complete remission (CR) and elevated again at relapse. High SOX2 and OCT3/4 levels were significantly correlated with the presence of adverse risk stratification parameters. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that both SOX2 and OCT3/4 could serve as biomarkers that could improve risk stratification of acute leukemia patients. Also, both SOX2 and OCT3/4 might be a therapeutic target, especially in resistant acute leukemia.

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a recurrent middle ear inflammatory condition. It may be complicated by acquired hearing loss and speech impairment especially in children. Accordingly, the current study aimed to assess the role of cytokines and the imbalance of Th17/Tregs in the pathogenesis of OME. Additionally, the protective effect of astaxanthin and its mechanisms related to Notch1/ Hes1/mTORC1/S6K1 signalling were investigated. METHODS: Forty-eight children were grouped as follow: G1: control healthy group G2: acute otitis media (AOM) group, G3: OME group. In the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced OME rat model, 15 rats were randomised into: G1: normal control group, G2: LPS group, and G3: astaxanthin treated group. RESULTS: Biochemical analysis of the children's peripheral blood samples showed that IL1ß, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-17, and IL-23 were significantly elevated, while TGF-ß was significantly decreased in AOM and OME patients (group 2 and 3). In the LPS- induced OME rat model, astaxanthin treatment resulted in suppression of IL-17, IL-6, TNF-α, Muc5A, TFF3, NICD, Hes1, mTORC1, and S6K1 in rat middle ear mucosa. Furthermore, astaxanthin significantly downregulated RORγ while upregulating FoxP3 and restored the balance between Th17/Tregs. Moreover, astaxanthin improved the histopathological picture of the inflamed middle ear mucosa. CONCLUSIONS: Proinflammatory cytokines as well as Th17/Tregs imbalance play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of AOM and OME. Additionally, astaxanthin alleviated LPS- induced OME in rats through suppression of Notch1/ Hes1/mTORC1/S6K1 pathway, and regulation of Th17/Tregs.

Obesity upsurges the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, primarily heart failure and coronary heart disease. Chia seeds have a high concentration of dietary fiber and increased concentrations of anti-inflammatoryand antioxidant compounds. They are used for weight loss plus enhancing blood glucose and lipid profile. The current perspective was commenced to examine the protective influence of chia seeds ingestion on cardiovascular disease risk factors in high-fat diet-fed rats. Forty male albino rats (with an initial body weight of 180-200 g) were used in this study. Rats were randomly and equally divided into 4 groups: Group I was the control group and group II was a control group with chia seeds supplementation. Group III was a high-fat diet group (HFD) that received HFD for 10 weeks and group IV was fed on HFD plus chia seeds for 10 weeks. In all groups Echocardiographic measurements were performed, initial and final BMI, serum glucose, AC/TC ratio, lipid profile, insulin (with a computed HOMA-IR), creatinine phosphokinase-muscle/brain (CPK-MB), CRP, and cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and MAP were estimated. Whole heart weight (WHW) was calculated, and then WHW/body weight (BW) ratio was estimated. Eventually, a histopathological picture of cardiac tissues was performed to assess the changes in the structure of the heart under Haematoxylin and Eosin and Crossmon's trichrome stain. Ingestion of a high diet for 10 weeks induced a clear elevation in BMI, AC/ TC, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, CRP, CPK-MB, and cTnI in all HFD groups. Moreover, there was a significant increase in MAP, left ventricular end diastolic diameter (LVEDD), and left ventricular end systolic diameter (LVESD). Furthermore, histological cardiac examination showed structural alteration of the normal structure of the heart tissue with an increase in collagen deposition. Also, the Bcl-2 expression in the heart muscle was significantly lower, but Bax expression was significantly higher. Chia seeds ingestion combined with HFD noticeably ameliorated the previously-recorded biochemical biomarkers, hemodynamic and echocardiography measures, and histopathological changes. Outcomes of this report reveal that obesity is a hazard factor for cardiovascular disease and chia seeds could be a good candidate for cardiovascular system protection.

OBJECTIVE: Dysregulation of microRNA expression could attenuate the course of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Therefore, the aim of our study is to address the association between miR-29a expression and other prognostic markers in CLL patients. METHODS: miR-29a expression was determined by quantitative real-time PCR in the plasma of 158 CLL patients at diagnosis beside 21 healthy controls in a prospective study. RESULTS: The levels of miR-29a expression were found to be significantly higher in CLL patients as compared to healthy controls (P<0.001). Moreover, a significant association between high miR-29a expression and poor prognostic markers (high expression of CD38 and ZAP70, high LDH levels, Stage III Rai stage, unfavorable cytogenetic finding, time to first treatment (TTFT) and patients outcome (P<0.001 for All). Using ROC curve, we have reported that miR-29a expression levels (29a<0.76 vs >0.76) is able to discriminate severity subgroups of CLL patients. CONCLUSION: Up regulation of miR-29a expression at CLL diagnosis was detected. Determination of miR-29a expression concentration levels at diagnosis could be demonstrated as a prognostic biomarker in CLL patients.

OBJECTIVE: Aberrant antigen expression was reported to be due to genetic and epigenetic dysregulation. This study aimed to address aberrant antigen expression and its link to poor prognostic genetic markers in acute leukemia patients. METHODS: This study included 432 newly diagnosed acute leukemia patients (AML, B-ALL). For all included patients blast cells expression for line assignment CD33 CD13 on B-All and CD7 on cytogenetically normal-AML blasts was assessed by flow cytometry in parallel to FLT3 and Philadelphia and philadelphia like chromosome in B-ALL. RESULTS: From the total 432 cases of acute leukemia, the most frequent aberrant antigen expressed in B acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) was CD33 (23.3%) followed by CD13(16.7%); while the most frequent one in AML was CD7 (16.7%). Aberrant myeloid phenotype in B-ALL was associated with lower mean total leukocytes count (TLC), low platelets count, positive Philadelphia like chromosome, shorter overall survival compared to the B-ALL without. Aberrant lymphoid phenotype (CD7) in AML was associated with a higher platelets count, FLT3 mutation, shorter disease-free and overall survival compared to those patients without. CONCLUSION: CD7 aberrant antigen expression is frequently detected in patients with CN-AML and frequently associated with FLT3 mutation. While in patients with B-ALL the most frequently detected ones are CD33 and CD13 which are frequently associated with Philadelphia like chromosome.

The main goal of the current report is to assess the protective impacts of chia seeds against obesity-induced ovarian dysfunctions with a trial to elucidate the mechanism of action. Forty rats were divided into 4 groups including lean untreated, lean consuming chia seeds, obese untreated, and rats consumed high-fat diet (HFD) mixed with ground chia seeds for 10 weeks. Anthropometric measures including visceral fat, peri-ovarian fat, ovarian weights, and duration of the estrous cycle were computed. Serum luteinizing (LH), follicular stimulating (FSH), progesterone, estradiol hormones, and tumor necrosis-α (TNF-α) were estimated. Ovarian histopathology and immunohistochemistry (CD31) were performed. Results showed that chia seeds clearly reduced obesity and induced alteration in anthropometric measures with a clear increase in LH and progesterone. Such seeds notably reversed histopathological alteration and reduced TNF-α, and CD31 induced by HFD. Conclusively, chia seeds have a potential protective role against obesity-induced ovarian dysfunction owing to their anti-inflammatory properties.

INTRODUCTION: Tissue-preserving surgery is utilized progressively in cancer therapy, where a clear surgical margin is critical to avoid cancer recurrence, specifically in breast cancer (BC) surgery. The Intraoperative pathologic approaches that rely on tissue segmenting and staining have been recognized as the ground truth for BC diagnosis. Nevertheless, these methods are constrained by its complication and timewasting for tissue preparation. OBJECTIVE: We present a non-invasive optical imaging system incorporating a hyperspectral (HS) camera to discriminate between cancerous and non-cancerous tissues in ex-vivo breast specimens, which could be an intraoperative diagnostic technique to aid surgeons during surgery and later a valuable tool to assist pathologists. METHODS: We have established a hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) system comprising a push-broom HS camera at wavelength 380∼1050 nm with source light 390∼980 nm. We have measured the investigated samples' diffuse reflectance (Rd), fixed on slides from 30 distinct patients incorporating mutually normal and ductal carcinoma tissue. The samples were divided into two groups, stained tissues during the surgery (control group) and unstained samples (test group), both captured with the HSI system in the visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) range. Then, to address the problem of the spectral nonuniformity of the illumination device and the influence of the dark current, the radiance data were normalized to yield the radiance of the specimen and neutralize the intensity effect to focus on the spectral reflectance shift for each tissue. The selection of the threshold window from the measured Rd is carried out by exploiting the statistical analysis by calculating each region's mean and standard deviation. Afterward, we selected the optimum spectral images from the HS data cube to apply a custom K-means algorithm and contour delineation to identify the regular districts from the BC regions. RESULTS: We noticed that the measured spectral Rd for the malignant tissues of the investigated case studies versus the reference source light varies regarding the cancer stage, as sometimes the Rd is higher for the tumor or vice versa for the normal tissue. Later, from the analysis of the whole samples, we found that the most appropriate wavelength for the BC tissues was 447 nm, which was highly reflected versus the normal tissue. However, the most convenient one for the normal tissue was at 545 nm with high reflection versus the BC tissue. Finally, we implement a moving average filter for noise reduction and a custom K-means clustering algorithm on the selected two spectral images (447, 551 nm) to identify the various regions and effectively-identified spectral tissue variations with a sensitivity of 98.95%, and specificity of 98.44%. A pathologist later confirmed these outcomes as the ground truth for the tissue sample investigations. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed system could help the surgeon and the pathologist identify the cancerous tissue margins from the non-cancerous tissue with a non-invasive, rapid, and minimum time method achieving high sensitivity up to 98.95%.

Oxygen saturation level plays a vital role in screening, diagnosis, and therapeutic assessment of disease's assortment. There is an urgent need to design and implement early detection devices and applications for the COVID-19 pandemic; this study reports on the development of customized, highly sensitive, non-invasive, non-contact diffused reflectance system coupled with hyperspectral imaging for mapping subcutaneous blood circulation depending on its oxygen saturation level. The forearm of 15 healthy adult male volunteers with age range of (20-38 years) were illuminated via a polychromatic light source of a spectrum range 400-980 nm. Each patient had been scanned five times to calculate the mean spectroscopic reflectance images using hyperspectral camera. The customized signal processing algorithm includes normalization and moving average filter for noise removal. Afterward, employing K-means clustering for image segmentation to assess the accuracy of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels. The reliability of the developed diffused reflectance system was verified with the ground truth technique, a standard pulse oximeter. Non-invasive, non-contact diffused reflectance spectrum demonstrated maximum signal variation at 610 nm according to SpO2 level. Statistical analysis (mean, standard deviation) of diffused reflectance hyperspectral images at 610 nm offered precise calibrated measurements to the standard pulse oximeter. Diffused reflectance associated with hyperspectral imaging is a prospective technique to assist with phlebotomy and vascular approach. Additionally, it could permit future surgical or pharmacological intercessions that titrate or limit ischemic injury continuously. Furthermore, this technique could offer a fast reliable indication of SpO2 levels for COVID-19 diagnosis.

The study investigated normal macromorphological and ultrasonographic features of the eye and lacrimal gland, as well as normal dacryocystorhinography of the donkey (Equus asinus) in Egypt. A total of 36 donkeys of different ages, weights, and sexes were included in the study: 21 live animals for ultrasonography and dacryocystorhinography, and 15 cadaver skulls for morphological anatomy of the lacrimal apparatus. The ultrasound biometric values of the eye were 33.7 ± 1.7 mm for axial globe length (AGL), 39.8 ± 2.1 mm for globe diameter (GD), 10.8 ± 0.7 mm for lens thickness (LT), 3.2 ± 0.7 mm for anterior chamber depth (ACD), and 19.3 ± 1.6 mm for vitreous chamber depth (VCD). The lacrimal gland was recognized as a hypoechogenic structure with an anechoic core, located at the dorsolateral aspect of the orbit, and ovoid in shape. The mean NLD length was 193.0 ± 9.8 mm by radiography and 206.0 ± 20.4 mm by gross assessment. One NL orifice (NLO) was noticed on each side, with a diameter of 3.0 ± 0.1 mm and located 12.1 ± 2.1 mm from the dorsal commissure of the nostril. These results may act as the baseline for proper management of conditions of the eye and lacrimal apparatus in the donkey in the future.

With extensive production and various applications of silica nanoparticles (SiNPs), there is a controversy regarding the ecotoxicological impacts of SiNPs. Therefore, the current study was aimed to assess the acute toxicity of silica nanoparticles in male Rattus norvegicus domestica after 24 and 96 h. Hematological, serum biochemical, stress biomarker, and immune-antioxidant parameters were addressed. Chemical composition, crystal structure, and the particle shape and morphology of SiNPs were investigated using XRD, FTIR, BET, UV-Vis, and SEM, while TEM was used to estimate the average size distribution of particles. For the exposure experiment, 48 male rats were divided into four groups (12 rat/group) and gavaged daily with different levels of zero (control), 5, 10, and 20 mg of SiNPs corresponding to zero, 31.25, 62.5, and 125 mg per kg of body weight. Sampling was carried out after 24 and 96 h. Relative to the control group, the exposure to SiNPs induced clear behavioral changes such as inactivity, lethargy, aggressiveness, and screaming. In a dose-dependent manner, the behavior scores recorded the highest values. Pairwise comparisons with the control demonstrated a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in hematological and immunological biomarkers [lysozymes and alternative complement activity (ACH50)] with a concomitant reduction in the antioxidant enzymes [catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and superoxide dismutase (SOD)] in all exposed groups to SiNPs. On the contrary, there was a noticeable increase in biochemical parameters (glucose, cortisol, creatinine, urea, low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoproteins (HDL), total protein, and albumin) and hepato-renal indicators, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), of all SiNP-exposed groups. It was observed that SiNPs induced acute toxicity, either after 24 h or 96 h, post-exposure of rats to SiNPs evidenced by ethological changes, hepato-renal dysfunction, hyperlipemia, and severe suppression in hematological, protein, stress, and immune-antioxidant biomarkers reflecting an impaired physiological status. The obtained outcomes create a foundation for future research to consider the acute toxicity of nanoparticles to preserve human health and sustain the environment.

SIGNIFICANCE: The estimation of tissue oxygenation is vital in the diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation of a huge assortment of diseases. The hyperspectral (HS) imaging system is a rising innovation that can be utilized to build a highly sensitive, non-invasive, and tissue hemoglobin immersion map. OBJECTIVE: As a result of the urgent need to design and implement early detection devices and applications for the COVID-19 pandemic, we propose building a non-invasive custom optical imaging system to assist with phlebotomy and vascular approach to survey the reliability of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels recovered from spectral images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HS images were gathered from 15 healthy subjects without previous medical history complications and with an average age range of 20 to 38 years, who were undergoing phlebotomy. The forearm was vigorously illuminated utilizing an HS camera with polychromatic source light of spectrum range (400∼980 nm). Spectroscopic reflectance images were caught by a focal plane exhibit for the region of interest (ROI). Then the custom algorithm comprising normalization and moving average filtering for noise removal was applied, followed by K-mean clustering for image segmentation to visualize and highlight the arteries and the veins in the investigated forearm. RESULTS: The investigations show that after normalization of the recorded signal from the HS camera of the participating subjects it was noticed that at wavelength of 460 nm the oxygenated arteries had a stronger signal than the de-oxygenated veins, and at a wavelength of 750 nm the de-oxygenated veins had a stronger signal than the oxygenated arteries. Thus, the ideal wavelength to reveal the oxygenated arteries was 460 nm, and the ideal wavelength to reveal the de-oxygenated veins was 750 nm. CONCLUSIONS: HSI is a prospective technique to assist with phlebotomy and non-contact oxygen saturation approach. Additionally, it may permit future surgical or pharmacological intercessions that titrate or limit ischemic injury continuously.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Thermal ablation is the predominant methodology to treat liver tumors for segregating patients who are not permitted to have surgical intervention. However, noticing or predicting the size of the thermal strategies is a challenging endeavor. We aim to analyze the effects of ablation district volume following radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of ex-vivo liver exploiting a custom Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RFA was conducted on the ex-vivo bovine liver at focal and peripheral blood vessel sites and observed by Custom HSI system, which has been designed to assess the exactness and proficiency using visible and near-infrared wavelengths region for tissue thermal effect. The experiment comprised up to ten trials with RFA. The experiment was carried out in two stages to assess the percentage of the thermal effect on the investigated sample superficially and for the side penetration effect. Measuring the diffuse reflectance (Rd) of the sample to identify the spectral reflectance shift which could differentiate between normal and ablated tissue exploiting the designed cross-correlation algorithm for monitoring of thermal ablation. RESULTS: Determination of the diffuse reflection (Rd) spectral signature responses from normal, thermal effected, and thermal ablation regions of the investigated liver sample. Where the ideal wavelength range at (600-640 nm) could discriminate between these different regions. Then, exploited the converted RGB image of the HS liver tissue after RFA for more validations which shows that the optimum wavelength for differentiation at (530-560 nm and 600-640 nm). Finally, applying statistical analysis to validate our results presenting that wavelength 600 nm had the highest standard deviation (δ) to differentiate between various thermally affected regions regarding the normal tissue and wavelength 640 nm shows the highest (δ) to differentiate between the ablated and normal regions. CONCLUSION: The designed and implemented medical imaging system incorporated the hyperspectral camera capabilities with the associate cross-correlation algorithm that could successfully distinguish between the ablated and thermally affected regions to assist the surgery during the tumor therapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the stage and severity of the chronic diabetic foot ulcer (CDFU) is vital to increase the healing rate and to select the suitable treatment. We aim to assess the influence of low-intensity laser irradiation (LILI) and hyperbaric oxygenation therapy (HBOT) to accelerate the CDFU healing thru the transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPO2) measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five diabetic patients (type 2) of both genders, their ages ranged from 40-65 years with CDFUs (duration of ulcer < 6 weeks). All patients were randomly assigned into LILI, HBOT, and the control group. Measurement of TcPO2 using transcutaneous oximetry was performed for all patients once in the baseline and consequently in the second, fourth, and sixth- weeks duration. LILI utilized by a 33-diode cluster contact applicator with output power 1440 mW, energy density (fluency) was adjusted for 4 J/Cm2 at 10 kHz, and for 8 min per session, three times per week for a total of consecutive 6 weeks. HBOT was pressurized up to 2.5 ATA and patients delivered 100% oxygen for 60 min per session for 30 sessions. The Control group received conventional wound care only, twice daily, with saline and apply a new bandage after cleaning. RESULTS: MANOVA revealed a statistically insignificant difference in the control group, while statistically significant improvement in both the LILI and HBOT groups. The intergroup comparisons showed an insignificant statistical difference in the pre-test, while highly statistically significant differences for the three post-measures in favor of HBOT and LILI groups. The percentage of improvement of the HBOT group was higher than LILI. Post-hoc test using the least significant difference (LSD) revealed statistically significant differences of HBOT in favor of the LILI group. CONCLUSION: Both LILI and HBOT may be used as adjunctive methods to improve TcPO2 that accelerate healing in CDFUs. HBOT may be favorable in the improvement of TcPO2 than LILI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Breast cancer is one of the most widely recognized tumors. .Diagnosis made in the early stage of disease may imporve outcomes. The discovery of malignant growth utilizing noninvasive light intrusive methods in lieu of conventional excisional biopsy may assist in achieving this goal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The change of the optical properties of ex-vivo breast tissues provides different responses to light transmission, absorption, and particularly the reflection over the spectrum range. We offer the use of Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) with advanced image processing and pattern recognition in order to analyze HSI data for breast cancer detection. The spectral signatures were mined and evaluated in both malignant and normal tissue. K-mean clustering was designed for classifying hyperspectral data in order to evaluate and detection of cancer tissue. This method was used to detect ex-vivo breast cancer. Spatial spectral images were created to high spot the differences in the reflectance properties of malignant versus normal tissue. RESULTS: Trials showed that the superficial spectral reflection images within 500 nm wavelength showed high variance (214.65) between cancerous and normal breast tissues. On the other hand, image within 620 nm wavelength showed low variance (0.0020).However, the superimposed of spectral region 420-620 nm was proposed as the optimum bandwidth. Finally, the proposed HS imaging system was capable to discriminate the tumor region from normal tissue of the ex-vivo breast sample with sensitivity and a specificity of 95 % and 96 %. CONCLUSIONS: High sensitivity and specificity were achieved, which proposes potential for HSI as an edge evaluation method to enhance the surgical outcome compared to the presently available techniques in the clinics.
