There has been an increase in the implementation of evidence-based parenting programs from high-income countries to several African countries. In this review, we systematically evaluated intervention studies of culturally adapted parenting programs in nine African countries with the objective of examining the quality of training for interventionists and cultural adaptation procedures. A total of 18 studies, obtained from an electronic search of 6 databases, met the inclusion criteria and were evaluated following PRISMA guidelines. The Ecological Validity Model was adopted to organize data on cultural adaptation procedures. Sixteen of the 18 studies reported information regarding the clinical training of interventionists and the cultural adaptations undertaken. Live and interactive workshops were the most common format used to train interventionists in the focal intervention. Overall, cultural adaptations in most studies included translation of intervention protocols into the local language. However, studies varied in the way cultural adaptation procedures were reported with some studies failing to report on cultural adaptation procedures. Concurring with previous literature, attending to issues of culture, power, privilege, access, sustainability, and other relevant concepts to increase the cultural relevance is highly encouraged in parent intervention studies in Africa. This review provides a baseline upon which future training and adaptation procedures can be built.

INTRODUCTION: We explored the association between pregnancy-related stigma and intimate partner violence (IPV) with depression and anxiety among adolescents in Uganda. METHODS: We interviewed a convenience sample of 100 adolescents (>18 years) who were pregnant (>3 months) or recently gave birth (<3 months) at Tororo District Hospital, Uganda. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were evaluated using the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL-25), physical and sexual IPV were assessed using the WHO violence against women instrument, and pregnancy-related stigma was captured with a questionnaire. Regression models were used to evaluate associations of pregnancy stigma and IPV with depression and anxiety. RESULTS: Mean age was 18 years, 84% were primiparous, 66% were married and 57% had only primary school-level education. About 48% women had clinically meaningful distress levels; 45% reported sexual IPV, 32% physical IPV, and 86% reported experiencing pregnancy-related stigma. Adjusted models showed that higher levels of depression and anxiety were associated with higher report of pregnancy-related stigma (ß = .27, p = .03), physical IPV, (ß = -.24, p < .01), or sexual IPV (ß = -.19, p = .05), compared to those who did not. Unemployment (ß = -.24, p = .01) and lower educational level (ß = -.21, p = .05) were also independent predictors of depression and anxiety. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that IPV is common among adolescents in Uganda, as is pregnancy-related stigma, and both are independent predictors of depression and anxiety. The implications of these findings and the need for clinical interventions for IPV among adolescents are discussed.

Improving the process through which mental health professionals are trained in evidence-based practices (EBPs) represents an important opportunity for extending the implementation of EBPs in community settings. In this study, we used a qualitative approach to examine the specific training elements that were beneficial to clinicians' experiences learning an evidence-based intervention. Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted with mental health professionals completing training in the GenerationPMTO parenting intervention. Data were analyzed using the tenets of thematic analysis. Overall, participants reported positive experiences in the training and growth in their attitudes, knowledge, and confidence in GenerationPMTO. The qualitative findings also suggested seven specific training elements that participants perceived as beneficial: support, role plays, engagement, structure, writing/visuals, working with training families, and experiencing the GenPMTO model. These results are discussed within the context of the existing literature on EBP training and more broadly as they relate to expanding the implementation of evidence-based interventions. We also suggest implications for practice meant to enhance future EBP training efforts.

RESUMO

Family therapy is growing around the world including in many parts of Africa. Although the African continent has many mental and family health needs that family therapists are well-suited to treat, barriers to the widespread application of family therapy on the African continent remain. In this article, we review the current state of systemic family therapy (SFT) in Africa. Drawing from existing literature, we discuss past, current, and future trends, including challenges related to the training and implementation of SFT in Africa. We devote sections of this article to discussing the historical and cultural context, including the fit for family therapy, along with ongoing initiatives in various African countries, using examples from three African countries. We emphasize and discuss the influence of Western models of family therapy in informing family therapy research, training, and implementation in Africa and discuss implications for the African context.
