RESUMO

Peer ratings of the quality of doctoral program faculties were obtained in a 1975 national survey of chemistry, history, and psychology programs. The ratings were then compared to those obtained 6 and 11 years earlier by the American Council on Education. In general, the rankings obtained from the ratings proved to be highly stable over the 11-year period, particularly in chemistry and history. Some ratings were also obtained for subspecialties within the three disciplines. Though it is clear that variations in quality among subspecialty faculties do exist and are important for individual program evaluations, it is unlikely that such subspecialty ratings would be feasible or useful in national surveys of the reputations of doctoral programs. The ratings were found to be highly related to a number of research-oriented variables of departments (such as size, productivity, percentage of alumni holding academic positions at Ph.D.-granting universities), but unrelated or very weakly related to such features as the student-reported quality of teaching and degree of faculty concern for students, or faculty-reported degree of departmental effort toward the career development of junior members of the faculty.

RESUMO

The use of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and intravenous fat emulsions in sick or preterm infants is often required to maintain adequate nutrition, yet recent research has shown that when exposed to light these nutrients are altered and deliver a high load of exogenous toxic hydroperoxides to already compromised infants. Hydroperoxides cause damage at the cellular level unless mediated by the body's antioxidant systems. NICU patients are, by definition, patients at risk. Preterm infants have low antioxidant reserves and, like sick term infants, typically suffer significant oxidative stress. Endogenous hydroperoxides alone may overwhelm defenses. The addition of hyperperoxides from light-exposed TPN or fat emulsions increases the risk of tissue damage. Hydroperoxides have been associated with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, chronic lung disease, retinopathy of prematurity, and necrotizing enterocolitis. By protecting these infusates from light, bedside nurses can reduce the amount of hydroperoxides infused and protect NICU patients from the associated risks.

RESUMO

The results of a national longitudinal study of the educational choices of a large sample of students are summarized with emphasis on the results for medical students. Surveyed as college seniors, students were followed up a year later. The senior results indicated that the future medical students were usually bright, academically successful, male, and frequently from relatively affluent families. Their self-conceptions and work values were consistent with the career of medicine. As medical students, they reported that they worked hard. They did not describe their professors as particularly good teachers, but they felt they had good relations with them. Similarly, although they felt the first year offered limited opportunities for individualization, they were generally quite satisfied with their schools.

RESUMO

This article asserts that graduate study should include preparation for participation in the process of self-regulation to assure the responsible conduct of research in the scientific community. This article outlines the various ways in which doctoral study can incorporate such preparation. These suggested ways include the inculcation of general attitudes and values about professional self-regulation, various ways doctoral study can be configured so that future scientists are prepared to participate in the deterrence, detection and sanctioning of scientific wrongdoing. The stages of doctoral study in the United States and their relevance to preparation for self-regulations are also discussed. Recommendations regarding an extended role for faculty advisors, graduate assistantships, coursework and departmental policies and activities are also advanced.
