RESUMO

Sliding friction across a thin soft lubricant film typically occurs by stick slip, the lubricant fully solidifying at stick, yielding and flowing at slip. The static friction force per unit area preceding slip is known from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to decrease with increasing contact area. That makes the large-size fate of stick slip unclear and unknown; its possible vanishing is important as it would herald smooth sliding with a dramatic drop of kinetic friction at large size. Here we formulate a scaling law of the static friction force, which for a soft lubricant is predicted to decrease as f(m)+Δf/A(γ) for increasing contact area A, with γ>0. Our main finding is that the value of f(m), controlling the survival of stick slip at large size, can be evaluated by simulations of comparably small size. MD simulations of soft lubricant sliding are presented, which verify this theory.

RESUMO

This data in brief article summarizes structural data obtained from monocomponent melt-spun and offline drawn poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) monofilaments, as well as from melt-spun bicomponent core-sheath PET-polyamide 6 (PA6) filaments. The diameters of the single filaments range from 27 µm to 79 µm. Presented analysis techniques and results thereof are (i) Raman mapping of filament cross-sections: 2D maps of peak positions, widths, peak area ratios; (ii) attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR): ATR-FTIR spectra and extraction of surface crystallinity; (iii) wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD): WAXD patterns and extraction of average crystallinity; (iv) small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS): SAXS patterns and determined crystallite sizes and long-spacings; (v) differential scanning calorimetry (DSC): thermograms and extracted average crystallinity as well as thermal properties; (vi) atomic force microscopy (AFM): AFM image of the surface of an embedded fiber cross-section. For more information, see the publication by E. Perret et al. 'High-resolution 2D Raman mapping of mono- and bicomponent filament cross-sections' [1].

RESUMO

We propose a model for a description of dynamics of cracklike processes that occur at the interface between two blocks prior to the onset of frictional motion. We find that the onset of sliding is preceded by well-defined detachment fronts initiated at the slider trailing edge and extended across the slider over limited lengths smaller than the overall length of the slider. Three different types of detachment fronts may play a role in the onset of sliding: (i) Rayleigh (surface sound) fronts, (ii) slow detachment fronts, and (iii) fast fronts. The important consequence of the precursor dynamics is that before the transition to overall sliding occurs, the initially uniform, unstressed slider is already transformed into a highly nonuniform, stressed state. Our model allows us to explain experimental observations and predicts the effect of material properties on the dynamics of the transition to sliding.

RESUMO

Platelets contribute to blood coagulation at sites of vascular injury and to the recruitment of leukocytes at sites of inflammation. Under pathological conditions, platelets are involved in numerous diseases and clinical complications, such as deep venous thrombosis, embolism and atherosclerosis. But so far, little is known about the mechanisms of inflammation in large veins and the role of platelets in inflamed large veins. For this purpose, we investigated primary and secondary interactions between platelets, leukocytes and endothelial cells in the femoral vein in vivo with special regard to the role of CD62P (P-selectin) and CD162 (PSGL-1). Mice were challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/D-galactosamine (D-gal) and either CD162 or CD62P was blocked by intravenous administration of a corresponding antibody at the time point of LPS/D-gal injection. Four hours after LPS/gal injection, intravital fluorescence microscopy of the femoral vein was performed and primary and secondary platelet-leukocyte-endothelial cell-interactions were visualized after in vivo platelet and leukocyte staining with rhodamine 6G. Analysis of intravital fluorescence microscopy revealed that LPS/D-gal caused a strong inflammatory reaction of the venous endothelium with significant induction of platelet and leukocyte tethering, rolling and adhesion. Secondary interactions of platelets to adherent or rolling platelets or leukocytes were also increased after LPS/D-gal-injection. Immunoneutralization of either CD162 or CD62P significantly decreased platelet primary and secondary capture as well as leukocyte rolling and adhesion. CD162 and CD62P play a central role in mediating inflammatory primary and secondary interactions of platelets and leukocytes to the endothelium in inflamed large veins in vivo. Thus, blocking CD162 or CD62P might be an attractive tool for preventing platelet and leukocyte-driven venous diseases.

RESUMO

Typing multiply-resistant bacteria using molecular techniques is high priority for national health authorities. Routine typing of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was initiated in Austria 2005 and was performed by sequence analysis of the variable X region of protein A gene (spa), characterisation of the mec gene (SCCmec) and testing for Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), enterotoxins, toxic shock syndrome toxin and the epidermolytic toxin genes. Ten different spa types, including newly identified t2023, were found among 66 clinical MRSA isolates originating from two neighbouring hospitals under the same management. Spa type t2023 was initially isolated in December 2005 from hospital A, where it became the dominant spa type during 2006 (nine of 16 isolates). The occurrence of type t2023 in hospital B remained a unique event and could be epidemiologically linked to a patient transferred from hospital A. Spa type t2023 is very similar to spa type t001. An isolate of spa type t001 from hospital A showed an enterotoxin gene pattern, multilocus sequence type (MLST) and SmaI macrorestriction PFGE pattern indistinguishable from that of t2023. Epidemiological differences suggested that infection control measures can prevent MRSA cross-transmission. Hospital B had a more stringent MRSA isolation policy, a higher nurse:patient ratio and provided more resources for infection control than hospital A.

RESUMO

The nonlinear dynamics associated with sliding friction forms a broad interdisciplinary research field that involves complex dynamical processes and patterns covering a broad range of time and length scales. Progress in experimental techniques and computational resources has stimulated the development of more refined and accurate mathematical and numerical models, capable of capturing many of the essentially nonlinear phenomena involved in friction.

RESUMO

We propose a two-dimensional lattice-gas (2D LG) model where atoms may be in two different states: the immobile state, in which they jump as usual in the LG model, and the running state, in which the atoms always jump in the driving direction. The model demonstrates a typical behavior of "traffic-jam" models: the system splits into domains of immobile atoms (jams) and running atoms. We considered four variants of the 2D LG model, namely the multilane and truly 2D models, each with "passive" and "active" atomic jumps. The model has the steady state with a power law distribution of jam sizes characterized by a universal exponent 3/2. The phase diagram of the model shows that the mobility of the 2D system is lower than the mobility of the 1D model due to the spreading of jams in the direction transverse to the driving direction.

RESUMO

We propose a model for a one-dimensional chain of interacting particles in an external periodic potential. In this model the particles have a complex structure treated in a mean-field fashion: particle collisions are inelastic and also each particle is considered as having its own thermostat. We derived the Fokker-Planck equation for this model and demonstrated that the model has a truly equilibrium ground state. When an external dc force is applied to the atoms, the model exhibits a hysteresis even at high temperatures due to the clustering of atoms with the same velocity. Another effect of clustering is phase separation in the steady state when the system splits into regions of immobile atoms ("traffic jams") and regions of running atoms.

RESUMO

We study the nonlinear dc response of a two-dimensional underdamped system of interacting atoms subject to an isotropic periodic external potential with triangular symmetry. When driving force increases, the system transfers from a disorder locked state to an ordered sliding state corresponding to a moving crystal. By varying the values of the effective elastic constant, damping, and temperature, we found different scenarios and intermediate phases during the ordering transition. For a soft atomic layer, the system passes through a plastic-channel regime that appears as a steady-state regime at higher values of the damping coefficient. For high values of the effective elastic constant, when the atomic layer is stiff, the intermediate plastic phase corresponds to a traffic-jam regime with immobile islands in the sea of running atoms. At a high driving of the stiff layer, a solitonlike elastic flow of atoms has been observed.

RESUMO

PURPOSE AND METHODS: A number of endocrine peptides and proteins are expressed by medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The expression of two newly appreciated neuroendocrine tumor markers, chromogranin A (CgA) and the endocrine antigen defined by monoclonal antibody HISL-19, was determined in 14 MTCs by immunohistology to evaluate the clinical utility of these markers in the diagnosis of MTC. Papillary, follicular, and undifferentiated thyroid tumors were also evaluated along with an MTC cell line. The same tissues were evaluated with antibodies to human calcitonin. RESULTS: All human calcitonin antibodies were found to react with the MTCs. In addition, all MTCs were reactive for CgA and the antigen detected by antibody HISL-19. CgA was generally present in the human calcitonin-containing cells, whereas the HISL-19 antigen had a more distinctive distribution. The other thyroid tumors failed to show reactivity with any of the three antibodies. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that, in addition to human calcitonin, MTCs commonly express CgA and the antigen defined by antibody HISL-19. Our observations thus add to the repertoire of endocrine substances produced by MTC. These studies also demonstrate the clinical value of immunohistologic procedures for two novel antigens in distinguishing MTCs from other thyroid tumors.

RESUMO

From May 1985 to June 1988, 70 evaluable patients with advanced squamous cell cancers of the oral cavity and the oropharynx were treated with preoperative combined radio-chemotherapy. Treatment consisted of 50 Gy/25 fractions/5 weeks, combined with concomitant administration of mitomycin C on day 1 (15 mg/m2, i.v. bolus) and 5-fluorouracil during the first 5 days of irradiation (750 mg/m2/24 hours, continuous infusion). Surgery was performed 3 to 5 weeks following irradiation. Treatment tolerance was good and local mucosal reaction was increased, but no major systemic side effects were recorded. At surgery, 3-5 weeks following irradiation, 48.6% of the operation specimens did not contain any histologically detectable residual tumor. Overall survival is 61%, being 69% in T2 and T3, while none of the patients with bone invasion has survived. Median survival is 28, 26, and 9 months in T2, T3 and T4 stages, respectively. Loco-regional relapses have been recorded in 33% of the patients, occurring in 27% of T2, 25% of T3, and 88% of T4 stages. Patients have been spared mutilating radical neck dissection because of combined presurgical treatment without impaired survival or loco-regional relapse rate.

RESUMO

A 25-year-old patient had unilateral absence of the right pulmonary artery (UARPA) and severe left pulmonary artery hypertension. After death from congestive right heart failure, autopsy revealed histologic signs of pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH). An accessory arterial vessel that was thrombotically occluded was found connecting the ascending aorta and the right pulmonary hilum. There was also histologic evidence of arterial thrombi within the right lung arterial vascular bed. The PH in UARPA usually occurs very early during the course of disease. From histologic findings and medical history, it is likely that in this case, late-onset elevation of pulmonary pressures was triggered by the occurrence of PVOD. This is the first case of UARPA and PVOD--a congenital unilateral arterial malformation in the presence of bilateral involvement in a possibly acquired venous obliterative disease.

RESUMO

We initiated the present study to predict interstitial lung involvement in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by means of logistic regression analysis of clinical data, lung function, chest roentgenogram, and serologic parameters. Fifty-eight nonsmoking patients with RA were randomized from the rheumatologic unit and sent for investigation to the pulmonary department. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed in the middle lobe and the BAL fluid was considered abnormal in case of increased cell count per milliliter and/or lymphocytosis and/or neutrophil granulocytosis; these findings or combinations thereof were found in 42 (72.4 percent) of 58 cases. The patients' data that had an impact on the normality of BAL were the sex (p = 0.001), vital capacity (p = 0.028), peripheral blood T-helper cells (OKT4+) (p = 0.025), DR(+)-lymphocytes (p = 0.002), and antinuclear antibodies (p = 0.025). By means of the logistic regression analysis, it was possible to reach high significance in the prediction of interstitial lung involvement, with a sensitivity of 92.9 percent and a specificity of 75.0 percent (p less than 10(-6)). The efficiency of prediction was 87.9 percent. From these results, we conclude that interstitial lung involvement in RA is predictable from laboratory findings that have been yielded by noninvasive diagnostic techniques. These data should be used in clinical routine monitoring and they may help to facilitate the assessment of whether bronchoscopy is indicated.

RESUMO

Bronchial epithelial cells obtained by brush biopsy during fiberoptic bronchoscopy performed in 12 patients with chronic bronchitis and 12 healthy control subjects, were investigated for HLA-DR antigen expression and nucleolar silver staining patterns. In all patients with chronic bronchitis the number of bronchial epithelial cells positive to HLA-DR antigen was highly increased (> 90%), whereas in the controls only a few epithelial cells (< 10%) showed a weak HLA-DR antigen expression. Patients with chronic bronchitis showed an increased lymphocytic reaction compared to the control subjects. Both in the patients with chronic bronchitis and in the healthy controls the number of nucleoli was the same. The number of silver stained dots per nucleus was significantly higher in patients with chronic bronchitis than in the control subjects (7.70 +/- 0.87 as against 5.11 +/- 0.52; p < 0.0001). The intensity of the lymphocytic reaction correlated with the HLA-DR antigen expression and the increase in silver staining (Spearman's r = 0.543; p < 0.01). This indicates the influence of inflammation on the activation of epithelial cells derived from the respiratory tract.

RESUMO

Bronchoalveolar lavage lymphocytes from 15 patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis and 8 healthy controls were investigated for nucleolar silver staining patterns and lymphocyte subpopulations. Patients with sarcoidosis had increased numbers of silver stained dots versus controls (2.20 +/- 0.24 versus 1.78 +/- 0.07; p less than 0.001). The number of silver stained dots showed the strongest positive correlation to helper cells (OKT 4+) (r = 0.781; p less than 0.0001). These results may be interpreted as further evidence of lymphocytic activation, especially of helper cells (OKT 4+) in pulmonary sarcoidosis.

RESUMO

Squamous cell carcinomas in the oral cavity and the oropharynx were diagnosed in 84 patients. After verification by biopsy, 79 of these patients were treated preoperatively with mitomycin C and 5-fluro-uracil, radiated and operated 3-5 weeks later. The effectiveness of adjuvant preoperative radio-chemotherapy was evaluated histologically. Serial sections of the entire tumor specimen were investigated and the percentage of vital cancerous tissue in the total tumor area was assessed. Regression was classified into four grades. Grades I and II were regarded as good response to adjuvant preoperative radio-chemotherapy, while grades III and IV stood for bad or no response. Morphologically questionable residual tumor infiltrates could be clarified by immunohistochemical methods with antibodies against vimentin, desmin and Lu-5. The histological assessment of the regression grade of operated tumor specimens allows a clinically relevant, morphologically exact and reproducible evaluation of the effect of preoperative radiochemotherapy.

RESUMO

Diffusion of a particle in the N-dimensional external potential which is periodic in one dimension and unbounded in the other N-1 dimensions is investigated. We find an analytical expression for the overdamped diffusion and study numerically the cases of moderate and low damping. We show that in the underdamped limit, the multidimensional effects lead to a reduction (compared to the one-dimensional motion) in the jump lengths between subsequent trappings of the atom at the minima of the external periodic potential. As an application, we consider the diffusion of a dimer adsorbed on the crystal surface.

RESUMO

We analyze a probability of atomic jumps for more than one lattice spacing in activated surface diffusion. First, we studied a role of coupling between the x and y degrees of freedom for the diffusion in a two-dimensional substrate potential. Simulation results show that in the underdamped limit the average jump length scales with the damping coefficient eta as proportional, variant eta(-sigma(lambda)) with 1/2

RESUMO

Molecular dynamics is used to investigate the melting of a thin lubricant film confined between two crystalline surfaces. The dynamics of the film is significantly affected by the substrate, both in the solid and in the molten phases. The solid phase, able to sustain shear stress, shows, however, large diffusional motions of the atoms. The melting temperature depends strongly on the confinement. A phenomenological microscopic theory, based on the Lindemann criterion, is proposed to explain this effect.
