OBJECTIVE: To investigate reported burden by the Primary Family Caregiver (PFC) 7-years after severe pediatric traumatic brain injury in the TGE (Traumatisme Grave de l'Enfant) longitudinal study. METHODS: Subjective burden was estimated with the Zarit Burden Inventory (ZBI) in 36 PFC (parents), who rated their own health status (Medical Outcome Study Short Form-12), family functioning and their child's level of care and needs (Pediatric/Adult Care And Needs Scale [PCANS/CANS]). Data collection included: child and PFC sociodemographic characteristics, injury-related factors, 'objective' (e.g. overall level of disability: Glasgow Outcome Scale - Extended, GOS-E/GOS-E-Peds) and 'subjective' outcomes (e.g. participation, behavior, executive functions, quality of life and fatigue). RESULTS: 25% of PFC reported mild-moderate burden, and 19% moderate-severe burden. Higher burden correlated with worse outcomes in all 'subjective' PFC-rated outcomes, and with self-reported participation. The ZBI correlated strongly with CANS/PCANS and GOS-E/GOS-E-Peds. Overall level of disability and PFC-reported executive functioning explained 62% of the ZBI variance. For equal levels of disability, burden was higher when PFC reported a 'negative' picture of their child. CONCLUSION: Significant PFC-reported burden 7-years post-injury was associated with overall disability and 'subjective' PFC-rated outcomes. Factors influencing parental burden in the long term should be identified and psychological support implemented over time.

RESUMO

The pursuit of high-power solar laser systems with high efficiency and capacity for large tracking error compensation is determinant for the applicability of this renewable technology. A side-pumped dual-rod Ce:Nd:YAG solar laser was developed and tested at the focus of a 2 m diameter parabolic concentrator. Maximum continuous-wave total solar laser power of 58 W was measured. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest laser power from a Ce:NdYAG solar laser. Moreover, wide tracking error compensation width of 5.1° in the azimuthal direction was reached, being 4.25 times higher than the previous measurement without solar tracking assistance.

Protected and conserved areas (PCAs) are key ecosystem management tools for conserving biodiversity and sustaining ecosystem services and social cobenefits. As countries adopt a 30% target for protection of land and sea under the Global Biodiversity Framework of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, a critical question emerging is, which 30%? A risk-based answer to this question is that the 30% that returns the greatest reductions in risks of species extinction and ecosystem collapse should be protected. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List protocols provide practical methods for assessing these risks. All species, including humans, depend on the integrity of ecosystems for their well-being and survival. Africa is strategically important for ecosystem management due to convergence of high ecosystem diversity, intense pressures, and high levels of human dependency on nature. We reviewed the outcomes (e.g., applications of ecosystem red-list assessments to protected-area design, conservation planning, and management) of a symposium at the inaugural African Protected Areas Congress convened to discuss roles of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems in the design and management of PCAs. Recent progress was made in ecosystem assessment, with 920 ecosystem types assessed against the IUCN Red List criteria across 21 countries. Although these ecosystems spanned a diversity of environments across the continent, the greatest thematic gaps were for freshwater, marine, and subterranean realms, and large geographic gaps existed in North Africa and parts of West and East Africa. Assessment projects were implemented by a diverse community of government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and researchers. The assessments have influenced policy and management by informing extensions to and management of formal protected area networks supporting decision-making for sustainable development, and informing ecosystem conservation and threat abatement within boundaries of PCAs and in surrounding landscapes and seascapes. We recommend further integration of risk assessments in environmental policy and enhanced investment in ecosystem red-list assessment to fill current gaps.


Contribuciones de la Lista Roja de Ecosistemas de la UICN al diseño y manejo basados en riesgos de las áreas conservadas y protegidas en África Resumen Las áreas protegidas y conservadas (APC) son herramientas clave del manejo de ecosistemas para conservar la biodiversidad y mantener los servicios ambientales y los cobeneficios sociales. Conforme los países adoptan un objetivo de 30% para la protección del suelo y el mar bajo el Marco Mundial de Biodiversidad de la Convención sobre la Diversidad Biológica de las Naciones Unidas, surge una pregunta crítica: ¿cuál 30%? Una respuesta basada en riesgos a esta pregunta es que se debe proteger el 30% que rinda la mayor reducción del riesgo de extinción de especies y del colapso del ecosistema. Los protocolos de la Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN) proporcionan métodos prácticos para evaluar estos riesgos. Todas las especies, incluidos los humanos, dependen de la integridad de los ecosistemas para su bienestar y supervivencia. Mientras estos ecosistemas comprenden una diversidad de ambientes en todo el continente, los principales vacíos temáticos los encontramos para los dominios subterráneos, de agua dulce y marina, además de que existe un gran vacío geográfico en el norte de África y en partes del este y oeste africano. Los proyectos de evaluación fueron implementados por una comunidad diversa de agencias gubernamentales, organizaciones no gubernamentales e investigadores. La influencia de las evaluaciones sobre las políticas y el manejo se da con la información que proveen a las extensiones y el manejo de las redes de áreas protegidas formales, el apoyo para la toma de decisiones de desarrollo sustentable y la guía para la conservación de ecosistemas y el abatimiento de amenazas dentro de los límites de las APC y en los paisajes terrestres y marinos adyacentes. Recomendamos una mayor integración de las evaluaciones de riesgo dentro de las políticas ambientales y más inversión para las evaluaciones de lista roja de los ecosistemas cubrir los vacíos existentes.

Solar laser technology typically requires a highly accurate solar tracking system that operates continuously, which increases energy consumption and reduces the system's lifetime. We propose a multi-rod solar laser pumping approach to enhance solar laser stability under non-continuous solar tracking conditions. Using a heliostat, solar radiation is redirected toward a first-stage parabolic concentrator. At its focus, an aspheric lens further concentrates the solar rays onto five Nd:YAG rods positioned within an elliptical-shaped pump cavity. Numerical analysis using Zemax and LASCAD software showed that the tracking error width at 10% laser power loss for the five 6.5 mm diameter and 15 mm length rods was 2.20°, which is 50% higher than that of the solar laser in previous non-continuous solar tracking experiments. 2.0% solar-to-laser conversion efficiency was also attained.

This study examined the psychometric properties of a Brazilian adapted version of the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS-BR) in a sample of adults in Brazil. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated that the CAS-BR produces a reliable (α = .84), unidimensional construct whose structure was shown to be invariant across gender, race, and age. However, some items of the CAS-BR were stronger indicators of the coronavirus anxiety construct for women and younger adults. Although the CAS-BR demonstrated evidence of discrimination ability for functional impairment (AUC = .77), Youden indexes were low to identify a clinical cut-score. Construct validity was demonstrated with correlations between CAS-BR scores and measures of functional impairment, generalized anxiety, and depression. Exploratory analyses revealed that CAS-BR total scores were higher among women and participants with a history of anxiety disorder. These findings are consistent with previous investigations and support the validity of CAS-BR for measuring coronavirus anxiety with Brazilian adults.

Does the muscle action duration induce different regional muscle hypertrophy in matched resistance training protocols? J Strength Cond Res 36(9): 2371-2380, 2022-The manipulation of the muscle action duration (MAD) can influence the instantaneous torque along the range of motion, which can lead to adaptations of regional muscle hypertrophy. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of matched resistance training (RT) on the knee extension machine with different MAD in the cross-sectional area (CSA) responses within the quadriceps femoris (QF) and its muscles. Forty-four subjects were allocated into a control and 3 experimental groups. For a period of 10 weeks, subjects in the experimental groups performed the training protocols that were different only by the MAD: group 5c1e (5s concentric action [CON] and 1s eccentric action [ECC]; group 3c3e (3s CON and 3s ECC) and group 1c5e (1s CON and 5s ECC). Magnetic resonance imaging was performed (before and after the intervention) to determine the relative change (%) in CSA of the QF muscles along proximal (30%), middle (50%), and distal regions (70% distal of the femur). The change in CSA of the rectus femoris at the middle region are greater in 5c1e (6.8 ± 6.5%) and 1c5e (7.4 ± 6.0%) groups than 3c3e (3.4 ± 6.6%) and control groups (0.2 ± 1.8%). In addition, vastus lateralis at the distal region (5c1e = 15.9 ± 11.8%; 1c5e = 14.4 ± 10.0%) presenting greater increases in change of CSA than the others vastus only 5c1e (vastus lateralis [VI] = 5.0 ± 4.7%; vastus medialis [VM] = 4.2 ± 3.2%) and 1c5e groups (VI = 4.7 ± 3.6%; VM = 3.4 ± 3.1%). In conclusion, this study showed that matched RT protocols with different MAD resulted in different region-specific muscle hypertrophic across the individual muscles of QF.

Equalization of training protocols by time under tension determines the magnitude of changes in strength and muscular hypertrophy. J Strength Cond Res 36(7): 1770-1780, 2022-The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 2 training protocols equalized by tension (TUT) on maximal strength (1 repetition maximum [RM]), regional cross-sectional areas (proximal, middle, and distal), and total cross-sectional areas (sum of the regional cross-sectional areas) of the pectoralis major and triceps brachii muscles. Thirty-eight men untrained in resistance training participated in the study and were allocated under 3 conditions: Protocol 3s (n = 11; 12 repetitions; 3s repetition duration), Protocol 6s (n = 11; 6 repetitions; 6s repetition duration), and Control (n = 11; no training). Training protocols (10 weeks; bench press exercise) were equated for TUT (36 seconds per set), number of sets (3-4), intensity (50-55% of 1RM), and rest between sets (3 minutes). Analysis of variance was used to examine a percentage change in variables of interest across the 3 groups with an alpha level of 0.05 used to establish statistical significance. Protocols 3s and 6s showed no differences in the increase of total and regional muscle cross-sectional areas. There were no differences in regional hypertrophy of the pectoralis major muscle. In the triceps brachii muscle, the increase in distal cross-sectional area was greater when compared with the middle and proximal regions. Both experimental groups had similar increases in the 1RM test. In conclusion, training protocols with the same TUT promote similar strength gains and muscle hypertrophy. Moreover, considering that the protocols used different numbers of repetitions, the results indicate that training volumes cannot be considered separately from TUT when evaluating neuromuscular adaptations.

The present study investigated the effect of 10-week matched (range of motion, volume, intensity, rest, and repetition duration) training protocols with varying muscle action duration (MAD) on maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) test at eight different knee angles and one-repetition maximum (1RM) test after in seated knee extensor machine. Forty women were allocated into one control and three training groups with varying MAD: 5C1E (5s concentric action [CON] and 1s eccentric action [ECC]), 3C3E (3s CON and 3s ECC), and 1C5E (1s CON and 5s ECC). All training groups (5C1E, 3C3E, and 1C5E) showed a greater relative response in 1RM performance than the control group (0.1 ± 3.5%, p ≤ 0.05). The 1C5E group presented greater relative increases in the 1RM performance (22.1 ± 11.6%) compared to 5C1E (13.6 ± 9.2%; p ≤ 0.05) and 3C3E (14.1 ± 5.5%, p ≤ 0.05) groups. The training groups increased the MVIC performance more than the control group (p ≤ 0.05), although there were no significant differences between the training groups. This study demonstrated that isoinertial resistance training protocols with shorter CON MAD showed greater maximum dynamic strength performance response than matched training protocols with other MAD configurations. However, the configuration of MAD did not induce angle-specificity to increase the maximum isometric strength.

Effects of static and dynamic stretching performed before resistance training on muscle adaptations in untrained men. J Strength Cond Res 35(11): 3050-3055, 2021-This study evaluated the effects of dynamic and static stretching (SS) performed before resistance training on biceps femoris hypertrophy and knee flexor strength gains in untrained young men. Forty-five untrained young men (age, 21.2 ± 0.5 years; mass, 72.2 ± 5.6 kg; height, 178 ± 1 cm) were randomly assigned to 1 of the 3 groups: (a) 80 seconds of SS (n = 14); (b) 80 seconds of dynamic stretching (DS, n = 13); or (c) control group (CON, n = 18) in which subjects performed no stretching before exercise. Both SS and DS were performed before resistance exercise. Resistance training consisted of 4 sets of 8-12 repetition maximum of seated leg curl exercise 2 days per week for 8 weeks, with a period of at least 48 hours between sessions. Unilateral biceps femoris muscle thickness (MT) and maximal isometric strength (MIS) of the knee flexors were measured 1 week before training and 1 week after the last training session. There were significant increases in MIS (SS = 13.9 ± 10.3 kgf; DS = 10.2 ± 13.1 kgf; CON = 12.7 ± 7.6 kgf; p < 0.05) and MT (SS = 6.0 ± 3.5 mm; DS = 6.7 ± 4.1 mm; CON = 5.7 ± 3.0 mm; p < 0.05) with no significant differences across groups (p > 0.05). Additionally, all groups demonstrated moderate effect sizes for MIS (1.27-1.4), and DS was the only group that had a large effect size for MT increases (DS = 2.18; SS = 1.35; CON = 0.92). In conclusion, 80 seconds of SS and DS did not induce any additional muscular adaptations to resistance training in untrained young men.

PURPOSE: To investigate self- and parent-reported Health-Related Quality-of-Life (HRQoL) and their associations after severe childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the Traumatisme Grave de l'Enfant (TGE) cohort. METHODS: Self- (n = 34) and/or parent-reports (n = 25) of HRQoL were collected for 38 participants (age 7-22 years) 7 years after severe childhood TBI. The collected data included sociodemographic characteristics, injury severity indices, and overall disability and functional outcome at 3-months, 1- and 2-years post-injury. At 7-years post-injury, data were collected in the TBI group and in a control group (n = 33): overall disability (Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended), intellectual ability (IQ), and questionnaires assessing HRQoL (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory), executive functions (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions), behavior (Child Behavior Checklist), fatigue (Multidimensional Fatigue Scale) and participation (Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation). RESULTS: Parent- and self-reports of HRQoL were significantly lower in the TBI group than in the control group. Parent-rated HRQoL was not associated with objectively assessed factors, whereas self-reported HRQoL was associated with gender (worse in females) and initial functional outcome. All questionnaire scores completed by the same informant (self or parent) were strongly inter-correlated. CONCLUSIONS: Reported HRQoL 7-years after severe childhood TBI is low compared to controls, weakly or not-related to objective factors, such as injury severity indices, clinically assessed functional outcomes, or IQ, but strongly related to reports by the same informant of executive deficits, behavior problems, fatigue, and participation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate presence of and factors associated with self- and parent-reported fatigue 7 years after severe childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the prospective longitudinal study TGE (Traumatisme Grave de l'Enfant-severe childhood trauma). METHODS: Self-reports and/or parent reports on the Multidimensional Fatigue Scale were collected for 38 participants (aged 7-22 years) 7 years after severe childhood TBI, and 33 controls matched for age, gender, and parental educational level. The data collected included sociodemographic characteristics, age at injury and injury severity scores, overall disability (Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended), intellectual outcome (Wechsler scales), and questionnaires assessing executive functions, health-related quality of life, behavior, and participation. RESULTS: Fatigue levels were significantly worse in the TBI than in the control group, especially for cognitive fatigue. Correlations of reported fatigue with age at injury, gender, TBI severity, and intellectual ability were moderate and often not significant. Fatigue was significantly associated with overall level of disability (Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended) and with all questionnaires completed by the same informant. CONCLUSION: High levels of fatigue were reported by 30% to 50% of patients 7 years after a severe childhood TBI. Reported fatigue explained more than 60% of the variance of reported health-related quality of life by the same informant (patient or parent).

OBJECTIVE: To determine if ulnar variance can be evaluated by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and if this measure can be used as a reliable indicator when correlated to the gold standard technique, conventional radiography (CR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January to July 2018, the MR images of 64 participants, comprising 66 wrists (mean age 34.9 years; 33 females; 31 males), were obtained. Among those, 29 were referred for evaluation of the wrist for different medical reasons and 35 were asymptomatic volunteers from our radiology group. All subjects had a plain radiography of the wrist in a posteroanterior view with a mean interval between images of 1 day. Local ethics committee approved the study and written informed consent was obtained from all patients. Two musculoskeletal radiologists evaluated the images. Correlation coefficients and a linear regression model were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Intra- and inter-observer analyses were performed for both diagnostic methods with results showing concordance (intra-observer: kappa score: MR 0.915/CR 0.931; p < 0.05; inter-observer: kappa score: MR 0.857/CR 0.931; p < 0.05). The intraclass correlations of MR and CR to evaluate agreement between the radiologists was slightly higher for radiologist #1 (0.771) than for radiologist #2 (0.659). A linear regression model showed good model fit indicating that MR does correlate with the ulnar variance as measured by CR (CR = 0.554 + 0.897 × MR, R2 = 0.665). CONCLUSION: Although CR is the gold standard method for the evaluation of ulnar variance, our study demonstrated that MR can be used as a reliable qualitative option.

Objective: Childhood brain tumors (BTs) and their treatment often negatively affect development of executive functions. Previous studies have reported executive functions deficits, particularly through questionnaires of daily life. This study aimed to assess executive functioning in everyday life following pediatric BT, in a larger and more histologically diverse sample than previously, and to study clinical and demographic factors influencing outcome.Methods: Assessment of executive functioning using parent ratings of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), in a large sample of children treated for various BT (n = 153). Clinical and demographic factors were: age at diagnostic, age at assessment, parental education level, radiation therapy.Results: Significant difficulties were found in the 3 composite indices and in the majority of the BRIEF subscales. The highest level of difficulties was observed in the Working Memory subscale. Older age at assessment and younger age at diagnosis were significantly associated with higher levels of parent-reported difficulties, particularly for metacognition.Conclusions: Parents of children treated for BT report widespread and persistent deficits in executive functions that negatively affect their everyday functioning. Including analysis of all clinical scales and composite indices allows a more comprehensive approach and enables to specify the patients' executive profile.

Is performing repetitions to failure less important than volume for muscle hypertrophy and strength? J Strength Cond Res 34(5): 1237-1248, 2020-The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of muscle failure (MF) or not to MF (NMF) training on strength and muscle hypertrophy relative gains (average and individual data). Ten men untrained in resistance training participated in the study. Each leg was allocated in 1 of 2 unilateral training protocols (MF or NMF with equal volume) on knee extension exercise. Both protocols were performed with 3-4 sets, 3 minutes' rest, and 55-60% of one repetition maximum (1RM). Rectus femoris and vastus lateralis muscles cross-sectional area (CSA), maximal muscle strength (1RM and maximal voluntary isometric contraction), and muscular endurance (maximum number of repetition) were assessed before and after 14 weeks. In addition, neuromuscular activation by normalized root mean square of the electromyographic signal (EMGRMS) was measured in 2nd and 35th training sessions. The average results showed that both training protocols were similarly effective in inducing increases in strength and muscle hypertrophy gains. However, individual analysis data suggest that NMF protocol with equal volume may promote similar or even greater muscle hypertrophy (vastus lateralis) and muscular endurance performance when compared with MF protocol. Also, normalized EMGRMS responses analyzed during 2nd and 35th sessions were similar in MF and NMF protocols for rectus femoris and vastus lateralis muscles. In conclusion, MF and NMF protocol conducted with the same total repetition numbers produced similar maximal muscle strength performance and neuromuscular activation. Nevertheless, NMF training could be a more appropriate strategy to increase muscle hypertrophy (vastus lateralis) and muscular endurance performance in untrained individuals when compared with MF.

The aims of this study were (1) to prospectively measure memory functioning following severe childhood Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and its evolution over 2 years; (2) to assess demographic and medical factors associated with memory function and recovery; (3) to explore relations between memory and other TBI outcomes. Methods: Children (aged 0-15 years; n= 65) consecutively admitted in a single trauma center over a 3-year period, who survived severe non-inflicted TBI, were included in a prospective longitudinal study. Memory was assessed in 38 children aged 5-15 years at injury, using the Children's Memory Scale at 3, 12, and 24 months post-injury. Results: Mean general memory score was low at 3 months (M = 90.2, SD = 20.3) but within the normal range at 12 and 24 months (M = 100.6, SD = 23.1 and M = 108.6, SD = 24.1, respectively), with high variability. Improvement was stronger for immediate visual memory than for other memory indices. Lower general memory score was associated with higher injury severity, lower intellectual ability and functional status, higher overall disability, and ongoing education. Conclusion: Memory functioning is highly variable following severe childhood TBI, related to injury severity and functional, cognitive and educational outcomes; improvement is significant during the first-year post-injury, but varies according to the type of memory.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that pediatric cancer induces a trajectory of parental stress, studies including mothers of children with malignant brain tumors remain scarce. The present work aims to add to the scientific literature by evaluating maternal stress with a French translation of the Pediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP) in a population of mothers whose children have been diagnosed with a brain tumor. PROCEDURE: The mothers of 35 children with malignant brain tumors completed the Pediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Family Assessment Device (FAD) at a mean time since diagnosis of 2.3 years. RESULTS: The PIP showed good internal consistency and correlated significantly with the STAI and the FAD. Maternal stress scores were higher in younger mothers and in mothers of younger children. Emotional functioning was the most affected domain. CONCLUSIONS: Emotional stress as assessed by the PIP in mothers of children with malignant brain tumors is considerable, and should be routinely assessed, in order to implement appropriate specific psychosocial interventions when needed.

Longer concentric action increases muscle activation and neuromuscular fatigue responses in protocols equalized by repetition duration. J Strength Cond Res 33(6): 1629-1639, 2019-The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of protocols equalized by the repetition duration but composed of different concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) durations on muscle activation and neuromuscular fatigue. Seventeen males with previous experience in resistance training performed 3 training protocols (A - 2 second CON: 4 second ECC; B - 3 second CON: 3 second ECC; and C - 4 second CON: 2 second ECC) with the Smith machine bench press exercise, all with 3 sets, 6 repetitions, 3 minutes' rest, and 60% of 1RM. The normalized root mean square of the electromyographic signal (EMGRMS) and mean frequency electromyography (EMGMF) for pectoralis major and triceps brachii muscles were calculated for second and fifth repetitions in each set. The results showed an EMGMF decrease across the repetitions accompanied by a progressive increase of the EMGRMS across the repetitions for all protocols and muscles. The EMGRMS was higher in protocol C when compared with protocol A and B for pectoralis major. The EMGMF was lower in protocols B and C than in protocol A for pectoralis major throughout the sets and repetitions. A higher EMGRMS and a lower EMGMF were observed in protocols B and C compared with protocol A for triceps brachii, solely in the fifth repetition. In conclusion, training protocols conducted with the same repetition duration, but with different concentric and eccentric durations, produce distinct muscle activation and neuromuscular fatigue responses, in which performing longer concentric durations could be the more appropriate strategy to increase muscle activation and neuromuscular fatigue.

OBJECTIVE: Studies on parental stress following childhood acquired brain injury (ABI-including brain tumours (BT) and other brain injuries) are scarce. The aim of this study was to assess maternal stress in a sample of children and adolescents diagnosed with severe paediatric ABI. METHODS: Seventy-eight French-speaking mothers of 37 with BT and 41 with other ABIs completed the Paediatric Inventory for Parents (PIP), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Family Assessment Device (FAD) at a mean time since diagnosis of 1.5 years. RESULTS: The PIP correlated significantly with the STAI and the FAD. Socio-demographic factors, such as the age of mother and child, and the mother's educational level, were correlated with both maternal stress and anxiety. Maternal stress scores were comparable between groups. Emotional functioning was the most markedly affected domain, followed by parental role. CONCLUSIONS: Emotional stress as assessed by the PIP in mothers of children with ABI is significant and should motivate specific psychosocial interventions.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the epidemiology of injuries and abnormalities of the anterolateral ligament (ALL) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in cases of acute anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. METHODS: MRIs of patients with acute ACL injury were evaluated. Acute injuries of the ACL were considered in cases in which the patient reported knee trauma occurring less than 3 weeks prior and when bone bruise in the femoral condyles and tibial plateau was identified. ALL abnormality was considered when it showed proximal or distal bone detachment, discontinuity of fibers, or irregular contour associated with periligamentous edema. The ALL was divided into femoral, tibial, and meniscal portions, and the lesions and/or abnormalities of each portion were characterized. The correlation of ALL injury with injuries of the lateral meniscus was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 101 MRIs were initially evaluated. The ALL was not characterized in 13 (12.8%) examinations, resulting in 88 (87.1%) cases of injury evaluation. Of these, 55 (54.4%) patients had a normal ALL, and 33 (32.6%) showed signs of injury. Among the cases with injury, 24 (72%) patients showed proximal lesions, 7 (21%) showed distal lesions, and 2 (6.0%) patients presented both proximal and distal lesions. The meniscal portion of the ALL appeared abnormal in 16 (48%) patients. No relationship was found between ALL injury and lateral meniscus injury. CONCLUSIONS: Based on MRI analysis of acute ACL injuries with bone bruising of the lateral femoral condyle and lateral tibial plateau, approximately a third demonstrated ALL injuries of which the majority was proximal.
