RESUMO

The European polecat (Mustela putorius Linnaeus, 1758) is in decline in Romania, often living near human settlements, from mountains to lowlands. They feed on a wide variety of small animals, including rodents, such as mice or rats. The occurrence of this parasite in polecats from Romania was mentioned only once in 1991, but the parasite species was not confirmed by molecular biology. The study aimed to investigate the occurrence of Trichinella spp. in European polecats from Romania and to identify the parasite species by molecular tools. A total of 75 wild European polecats were examined by trichinoscopy and artificial digestion. A large number of animals were examined because of their wide distribution in Romanian territory and their presence near human settlements. For species determination, the positive muscle samples and the larvae recovered from artificial digestion were collected for DNA isolation and further processed by means of Multiplex PCR. Only two polecats from southern Romania tested positive for Trichinella spp. infection. During trichinoscopy examination, 48 (in a polecat from Giurgiu County) and 78 (in a polecat from Ialomița County) cysts were found in the tested (56 samples/animal) tissue samples. Artificial digestion revealed infection with 2466 larvae/100 g of muscle in the polecat from Ialomița and 254/100 g in the polecat from Giurgiu. The Multiplex PCR indicated the occurrence of Trichinella spiralis in the polecat from Giurgiu and a co-infection with T. spiralis and T. britovi in the polecat from Ialomița. The current study confirms through molecular biology, the occurrence of T. spiralis and T. britovi, as well as the occurrence of co-infection with these two Trichinella species in European polecats from Romania.

RESUMO

Hippobosca longipennis (Diptera: Hippoboscidae), the dog fly or dog louse fly, is an obligate blood-feeding ectoparasite of wild and domestic carnivores in Africa and the Middle East. Outside its typically known geographic range, H. longipennis has been reported occasionally on mainly domestic dogs in Asia and southern Europe, and infrequently in other areas (central Europe and the U.S.A.). This paper presents the first report of H. longipennis in Romania and the second record of Lipoptena fortisetosa (Diptera: Hippoboscidae), a potentially invasive species. Hippobosca longipennis was found on domestic dogs in two regions of the country (northern Romania in Maramures and southwestern Romania in Dobrogea) and on two road-killed wildcats in Maramures. Lipoptena fortisetosa was found on domestic dogs in Maramures. In both species identification was based on morphology and confirmed by barcoding of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene. It is not clear for how long H. longipennis has been present in central Europe, nor if it was introduced (via the movement of domestic dogs or import of exotic carnivores) or present historically (Holocene remnants). This paper discusses the possible origins of H. longipennis in central Europe as its current distribution in the area is sparse and patchy.

RESUMO

Nematodes of the Angiostrongylidae family, such as Angiostrongylus vasorum and Angiostrongylus cantonensis, may cause potentially life-threatening diseases in several mammal species. Alongside these well-known species, Angiostrongylus chabaudi has been recently found affecting the cardiopulmonary system of domestic and wild cats from Italy, Germany, Greece, Romania and Bulgaria. Nonetheless, significant gaps in the understanding of A. chabaudi epidemiology include the lack of information of species acting as intermediate host and of the morphological description of larval stages. Cornu aspersum (n = 30) land snails were infected with 100 first-stage larvae of A. chabaudi collected from a naturally infected wildcat in Romania. Larvae at different developmental stages were found in 29 out of 30 (96·7%) infected snails and a total of 282 (mean 9·8 ± 3·02 larvae per each specimen) were collected from the gastropods. Here we demonstrate that A. chabaudi develops in snails and report C. aspersum as potential intermediate host for this parasitic nematode. Findings of this study are central to understand the ecological features of feline angiostrongylosis and its epidemiology within paratenic and intermediate hosts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Resistance to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) has been observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and it is associated with clinical outcomes. The presence of ESA resistance cannot always be explained by the known risk factors of the condition, suggesting that additional factors may be involved. We wanted to test the hypothesis that vitamin D insufficiency is associated with lower hemoglobin (Hb) and ESA resistance in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD). METHODS: Data from patients receiving maintenance HD in a single dialysis center were extracted from the medical records in a retrospective chart review. Basic patient characteristics and laboratory data including Hb, serum albumin, intact parathyroid hormone and serum 25(OH)-cholecalciferol (25(OH)D(3)) levels were collected. ESA dose and Kt/V were extracted from the dialysis charts. Correlation analysis and multivariate linear regression analysis were used to reveal potential independent associations between clinical and laboratory parameters and ESA resistance. RESULTS: Data from 142 patients were analyzed. Serum 25(OH)D(3) concentration was significantly correlated with Hb (ρ = 0.186, p < 0.05) and also with ESA dose/Hb index (ρ = 0.230, p < 0.01). In multivariable regression analyses, serum 25(OH)D(3) concentration remained significantly associated with both Hb and ESA dose/Hb index after controlling for potentially important confounders. CONCLUSION: Serum 25(OH)D(3) concentration is independently associated with erythropoietin responsiveness in CKD patients on maintenance HD. If this association will be confirmed, treatment trials looking at the effect of vitamin D supplementation on anemia treatment in CKD patients may be warranted.

RESUMO

AIMS: An increasing amount of evidence suggests that 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) may contribute to the bone health of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The underlying vitamin D status of these patients, however, has often been neglected. In a cross-sectional study we assessed the association between vitamin D status and parathyroid function, bone turnover, bone mass and structure in patients on maintenance hemodialysis. METHODS: 69 patients on maintenance hemodialysis were assessed by bone densitometry (DEXA) and quantitative bone ultrasound (QUS). Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 levels, serum markers of bone turnover and clinical data were tabulated. RESULTS: A high prevalence of potentially significant vitamin D3 deficiency was found in this patient group: 59% of the patients had a 25(OH)D3 level below 20 nmol/l. There was a significant negative correlation between serum 25(OH)D3 levels and serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) (r = -0.231, p < 0.05), and this association remained significant after controlling for potential covariables. Furthermore, we show here that serum 25(OH)D3 concentration is positively correlated with bone mineral density (BMD) measured at the radius (r = 0.424, p < 0.01). Finally, we show for the first time that 25(OH)D3 levels are significantly and independently correlated with broadband ultrasound attenuation (beta = 0.262, p < 0.05) measured with calcaneal quantitative bone ultrasound (QUS) in patients with chronic renal failure. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D3 deficiency may contribute to the impaired bone health of patients on maintenance dialysis.

RESUMO

As shown by structure-activity relationship studies in 8-(substituted-amino)-4-aryl-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines, the most important structural requirement for a marked antidepressant action is the presence of an ureido, (alkoxycarbonyl)amino, or [(alkylamino)acyl]amino group attached to the isoquinoline skeleton in position 8. In one of the biological tests a significant difference was found between 8-amino-4-phenyl-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (nomifensine) and the new compounds synthesized. Nearly all compounds substituted in the amino group either decrease the spontaneous motility in mice or exert no effect on it. Two syntheses have been elaborated for the preparation of the compounds represented by the general formulas II-V where R1 = hydrogen, halogen, or methyl; Y = CONHR, OCOR, or CO(CH2)nNHR, in which R = alkyl or aralkyl or NHR = cyclic amine and n = 1-2. The syntheses start either from the corresponding 8-amino-4-aryl-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines or from the corresponding noncyclized amino alcohols. Of the compounds, 4-(p-chlorophenyl)-8-[(ethoxy-carbonyl)amino]-2-methyl-1,2,3,4- tetrahydroisoquinoline was found to possess the highest activity.

RESUMO

A post-source decay matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometric (PSD-MALDI-MS) study of rutin, a naturally occurring flavone glycoside cationized with different alkali metal ions, is reported. The fragmentations of rutin were performed by selecting the [R + Cat]+ peaks for PSD, where R represents a rutin molecule and Cat an alkali metal ion (Li+, Na+, K+). The PSD-MALDI mass spectra showed, depending on Cat, different fragmentation patterns with respect to both the quality and quantity of the fragment ions formed. The intensity of fragmentation decreased in the order Li+ > Na+ > K+. The fragmentation mechanism and an explanation for the observed differences are suggested.

RESUMO

Interaction between iron(II) and acetohydroxamic acid (Aha), alpha-alaninehydroxamic acid (alpha-Alaha), beta-alaninehydroxamic acid (beta-Alaha), hexanedioic acid bis(3-hydroxycarbamoyl-methyl)amide (Dha) or desferrioxamine B (DFB) under anaerobic conditions was studied by pH-metric and UV-Visible spectrophotometric methods. The stability constants of complexes formed with Aha, alpha-Alaha, beta-Alaha and Dha were calculated and turned out to be much lower than those of the corresponding iron(II) complexes. Stability constants of the iron(II)-hydroxamate complexes are compared with those of other divalent 3d-block metal ions and the Irving-Williams series of stabilities was found to be observed. Above pH 4, in the reactions between iron(II) and desferrioxamine B, the oxidation of the metal ion to iron(III) by the ligand was found. The overall reaction that resulted in the formation of the tris-hydroxamato complex [Fe(HDFB)]+ and monoamide derivative of DFB at pH 6 is: 2Fe2+ + 3H4DFB+ = 2[Fe(HDFB)]+ + H3DFB-monoamide+ + H2O + 4H+. Based on these results, the conclusion is that desferrioxamine B can uptake iron in iron(III) form under anaerobic conditions.

RESUMO

Percutaneous superselective balloon catheterization for the treatment of large cerebral arteriovenous malformations, for which direct operation is infeasible, is described. Both a detachable balloon technique and a "calibrated leak" free embolization have been applied, based on a new hardening silicone material elaborated by the authors. The experiences of operations performed since 1978 are represented by four selected case studies.

RESUMO

The frequency of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) has been studied in the sera and renal biopsies of 276 patients with various forms of glomerulonephritis (GN), the nephrotic syndrome and other nephropathies. Using a modified Hepanosticon method, HBs antigenemia was detected in 32 of 196 patients (16.3%) with immune complex (IC) GN and the nephrotic syndrome. Indirect immunofluorescence revealed HBsAg in 33 renal biopsy tissue specimens (16.8%). HBsAg was found in the sera of four of the 80 remaining patients with other renal diseases (5%), and in the renal biopsy tissues of another four (5%). Antibody against HBsAg could only be demonstrated in the serum of one glomerulonephritic patient. The sera of 18,799 normal blood donors were used as controls; of these 186 (0.99%) had positive tests for HBsAg. It is concluded that, in some patients with GN and the nephrotic syndrome, HBsAg-containing IC may be implicated in the development and/or progression of the disease.

RESUMO

Applying several names to an entity (polynomy) reflects the ability to categorize entities in different ways. Two experiments demonstrate preschoolers' abilities to apply multiple labels to representational objects and to people. In Experiment 1, 3- and 4-year-olds labeled representational objects and verified labels for story characters. In both tasks children reliably produced or accepted several words per entity and accepted a high percentage of both class-inclusive and overlapping word pairs. These results were replicated in Experiment 2; 3- to 5-year-olds also completed appearance-reality and receptive vocabulary tests. The mean number of words produced in the labeling task was significantly related to receptive vocabulary, but not to appearance-reality performance. The results indicate that preschoolers represent an entity as belonging to multiple categories (e.g., dinosaur and crayon). Implications for cognitive and language development, particularly the appearance-reality distinction and the mutual exclusivity bias, are discussed.

RESUMO

Factors affecting joint visual attention in 12- and 18-month-olds were investigated. In Experiment 1 infants responded to 1 of 3 parental gestures: looking, looking and pointing, or looking, pointing, and verbalizing. Target objects were either identical to or distinctive from distractor objects. Targets were in front of or behind the infant to test G. E. Butterworth's (1991b) hypothesis that 12-month-olds do not follow gaze to objects behind them. Pointing elicited more episodes of joint visual attention than looking alone. Distinctive targets elicited more episodes of joint visual attention than identical targets. Although infants most reliably followed gestures to targets in front of them, even 12-month-olds followed gestures to targets behind them. In Experiment 2 parents were rotated so that the magnitude of their head turns to fixate front and back targets was equivalent. Infants looked more at front than at back targets, but there was also an effect of magnitude of head turn. Infants' relative neglect of back targets is partly due to the "size" of adult's gesture.

RESUMO

A rare case of primary malignant intramedullary lymphoma, localized in the cervical part of the spinal cord, is presented. The onset of clinical symptoms was associated with herpes zoster infection. Surgery led to the histological diagnosis. The clinical investigations excluded the presence of lymphoma in other sites in the central nervous system and in the extraneural organs. Postoperative irradiation and chemotherapy effected relict of neurological symptoms.

RESUMO

The disease peptic ulcer in patients does not present a uniform clinical entity. Hence, the therapeutic approaches to peptic ulcers are significantly different. Independently from the therapeutically given drugs, some common problems can be found in the methods of critical evaluation of the peptic ulcer therapy in patients. This paper deals with goals, the possible ways to evaluate critically the efficacy of peptic ulcer therapy and the problems in patients in relation to both evaluation of clinical pharmacology and as well as to everyday medical practice.

RESUMO

The efficacy of local-acting De-Nol liquid (tripotassium dicitrato bismuthate) was investigated in patients with endoscopically verified gastric ulcer. In a prospective-type clinical trial, 16 outpatients received De-Nol and 24 outpatients received an antacid mixture (sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate, magnesium trisilicate in equal parts). The period of study was 4 weeks, the endoscopy being performed on the 14th and 28th day after commencement of treatment. We Registration was made of the degree of ulcer healing (ulcer is healed, or not healed but reduced by 50%, or slightly healed, or unchanged), the degree of pain (0 = none, 1 = slight, 2 = moderate, 3 = severe), body weight, different biochemical and haematological examinations, side-effects and some other parameters. Of those patients given De-Nol treatment, the ulcer healed in 69% within four weeks, as compared with 33% of those given antacid therapy. There was also a significant (p less than 0.001, p less than 0.02) difference between the two groups in the size of the ulceration which remained and in the decrease of pain. Side-effects were not recorded. These data suggest the beneficial effect of De-Nol liquid in the treatment of patients with gastric ulceration.

RESUMO

Prospective randomized studies were carried out in 136 endoscopically verified duodenal ulcer patients to evaluate the healing effects of the following four-week courses of treatment: placebo, atropine (3 X 0.66 mg), carbenoxolone (3 X 100-3 X 50 mg), atropine + cyproheptadine (3 X 4 mg), atropine + carbenoxolone. Antacid powder was also supplied for relief of symptoms as required. Ulcer healing (incidence and planimetrically calculated surface), changes in complaints, antacid consumption and subjective and objective side-effects were evaluated during each type of treatment. The effectiveness of the different treatments were compared according to these points. The results showed: (i) that atropine, atropine + cyproheptadine and carbenoxolone all had good ulcer healing effects (75%, 74%, 62% respectively), according to incidence; (ii) that the atropine + carbenoxolone combination did not have a better healing effect (44%) than placebo (41%); (iii) that there were no significant differences among the planimetrically calculated ulcer healing effects during the different types of treatment; (iv) that the earliest diminution in complaints the greatest increase in body weight were found in the atropine + cyproheptadine group; (v) that there were no objective side-effects during the four-week treatment periods; and (vi) that definite subjective side-effects were observable only in the two atropine-treated groups. The findings led to the conclusion that the atropine + cyproheptadine combination is of value for the treatment of duodenal ulcer, while the atropine + carbenoxolone combination presents no practical advantages.

RESUMO

The effects of vitamin A were studied on the basal and maximal gastric secretory responses of 12 patients; and on healing in 60 patients with chronic gastric ulcer. The effect of vitamin A on ulcer healing was evaluated by a multiclinical, multicentre, randomized, prospective study in which the patients were divided into three groups. In group A the patients were treated with antacids only; in group B the patients were given antacids plus vitamin A (in doses of 3 X 50.000 U orally); and in group C the patients received antacids, vitamin A plus cyproheptadine (in doses of 3 X 4 mg orally). The treatment lasted four weeks. At the beginning and the end of treatment endoscopies were performed and ulcer sizes were measured planimetrically. Various other parameters such as ulcer index, antacid consumption and laboratory parameters were also evaluated during the four-week treatment. It was observed that: (i) vitamin A (given in doses of 100.000 U i.m.) decreased neither basal nor maximal gastric secretory responses; (ii) the number of patients with completely healed gastric ulcer was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) in groups B and C than in group A; (iii) the extent of ulcer reduction was significantly higher (P less than 0.01) in groups B and C than in group A; (iv) no significant changes were observed in ulcer index and antacid consumption during the four-week treatment in the different groups of patients; (v) the reduction of ulcer size was significantly greater (P less than 0.01) in the group treated with antacids plus vitamin A than in the group treated with antacids only, at two weeks of treatment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

The effects of hypothermic preservation of canine kidneys for 24 hours by the use of the Sacks solution, and additional autogenous reperfusion were studied by means of submicroscopic morphological methods. While preservation with the Sacks solution was to ensure normal organization of the lipoprotein structures of the basement and cell membranes, in case of additional reperfusion, even of short duration, a substantial or complete loss of anisotropy of the cytomembranes was demonstrable. The present report is the first to be published in the literature on polarization microscopic studies concerned with the effects of kidney preservation and of reperfusion.

RESUMO

Cytophotometric investigations were performed on the atypical renal tubular epithelium of a young man who died of renal failure, possibly due to chronic lead exposure. The aim of this analysis was to determine whether nuclear atypia indicates incipient malignancy or is a type of so-called "benign atypias". DNA histogram, showing euploid polyploidy supports the latter view and the dysplastic epithelial lesion is not even considered to be a preneoplastic condition.

RESUMO

Donor kidneys were preserved in a Collins-4 solution containing periodate in concentrations of 10(-2) and 10(-4) mole/l, respectively, in an attempt to oxidize the carbohydrate components of the antigen-carrying membrane surfaces and thus to influence the rejection phenomena exhibited by the allogeneic kidney. All kidneys were, however, rejected as a result of a hyperacute reaction indicating that periodate did not react with the hydrophobic membrane structures in vivo. Not only did the antigen thus remain unchanged but the vulnerability of other renal structures to the destructive effect of the killer cells also increased as a result of toxic damage.
