RESUMO

In spite of the high-density and strongly correlated nature of the atomic nucleus, experimental and theoretical evidence suggests that around particular 'magic' numbers of nucleons, nuclear properties are governed by a single unpaired nucleon1,2. A microscopic understanding of the extent of this behaviour and its evolution in neutron-rich nuclei remains an open question in nuclear physics3-5. The indium isotopes are considered a textbook example of this phenomenon6, in which the constancy of their electromagnetic properties indicated that a single unpaired proton hole can provide the identity of a complex many-nucleon system6,7. Here we present precision laser spectroscopy measurements performed to investigate the validity of this simple single-particle picture. Observation of an abrupt change in the dipole moment at N = 82 indicates that, whereas the single-particle picture indeed dominates at neutron magic number N = 82 (refs. 2,8), it does not for previously studied isotopes. To investigate the microscopic origin of these observations, our work provides a combined effort with developments in two complementary nuclear many-body methods: ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group and density functional theory (DFT). We find that the inclusion of time-symmetry-breaking mean fields is essential for a correct description of nuclear magnetic properties, which were previously poorly constrained. These experimental and theoretical findings are key to understanding how seemingly simple single-particle phenomena naturally emerge from complex interactions among protons and neutrons.

Molecular spectroscopy offers opportunities for the exploration of the fundamental laws of nature and the search for new particle physics beyond the standard model1-4. Radioactive molecules-in which one or more of the atoms possesses a radioactive nucleus-can contain heavy and deformed nuclei, offering high sensitivity for investigating parity- and time-reversal-violation effects5,6. Radium monofluoride, RaF, is of particular interest because it is predicted to have an electronic structure appropriate for laser cooling6, thus paving the way for its use in high-precision spectroscopic studies. Furthermore, the effects of symmetry-violating nuclear moments are strongly enhanced5,7-9 in molecules containing octupole-deformed radium isotopes10,11. However, the study of RaF has been impeded by the lack of stable isotopes of radium. Here we present an experimental approach to studying short-lived radioactive molecules, which allows us to measure molecules with lifetimes of just tens of milliseconds. Energetically low-lying electronic states were measured for different isotopically pure RaF molecules using collinear resonance ionisation at the ISOLDE ion-beam facility at CERN. Our results provide evidence of the existence of a suitable laser-cooling scheme for these molecules and represent a key step towards high-precision studies in these systems. Our findings will enable further studies of short-lived radioactive molecules for fundamental physics research.

Collinear laser spectroscopy was performed on the isomer of the aluminium isotope ^{26m}Al. The measured isotope shift to ^{27}Al in the 3s^{2}3p ^{2}P_{3/2}^{○}→3s^{2}4s ^{2}S_{1/2} atomic transition enabled the first experimental determination of the nuclear charge radius of ^{26m}Al, resulting in R_{c}=3.130(15) fm. This differs by 4.5 standard deviations from the extrapolated value used to calculate the isospin-symmetry breaking corrections in the superallowed ß decay of ^{26m}Al. Its corrected Ft value, important for the estimation of V_{ud} in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, is thus shifted by 1 standard deviation to 3071.4(1.0) s.

The impact of nuclear deformation can been seen in the systematics of nuclear charge radii, with radii generally expanding with increasing deformation. In this Letter, we present a detailed analysis of the precise relationship between nuclear quadrupole deformation and the nuclear size. Our approach combines the first measurements of the changes in the mean-square charge radii of well-deformed palladium isotopes between A=98 and A=118 with nuclear density functional calculations using Fayans functionals, specifically Fy(std) and Fy(Δr,HFB), and the UNEDF2 functional. The changes in mean-square charge radii are extracted from collinear laser spectroscopy measurements on the 4d^{9}5s ^{3}D_{3}→4d^{9}5p ^{3}P_{2} atomic transition. The analysis of the Fayans functional calculations reveals a clear link between a good reproduction of the charge radii for the neutron-rich Pd isotopes and the overestimated odd-even staggering: Both aspects can be attributed to the strength of the pairing correlations in the particular functional which we employ.

The ground state to ground state electron-capture Q value of ^{159}Dy (3/2^{-}) has been measured directly using the double Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP. A value of 364.73(19) keV was obtained from a measurement of the cyclotron frequency ratio of the decay parent ^{159}Dy and the decay daughter ^{159}Tb ions using the novel phase-imaging ion-cyclotron resonance technique. The Q values for allowed Gamow-Teller transition to 5/2^{-} and the third-forbidden unique transition to 11/2^{+} state with excitation energies of 363.5449(14) keV and 362.050(40) keV in ^{159}Tb were determined to be 1.18(19) keV and 2.68(19) keV, respectively. The high-precision Q value of transition 3/2^{-}→5/2^{-} from this work, revealing itself as the lowest electron-capture Q value, is used to unambiguously characterize all the possible lines that are present in its electron-capture spectrum. We performed atomic many-body calculations for both transitions to determine electron-capture probabilities from various atomic orbitals and found an order of magnitude enhancement in the event rates near the end point of energy spectrum in the transition to the 5/2^{-} nuclear excited state, which can become very interesting once the experimental challenges of identifying decays into excited states are overcome. The transition to the 11/2^{+} state is strongly suppressed and found unsuitable for measuring the neutrino mass. These results show that the electron-capture in the ^{159}Dy atom, going to the 5/2^{-} state of the ^{159}Tb nucleus, is a new candidate that may open the way to determine the electron-neutrino mass in the sub-eV region by studying electron-capture. Further experimental feasibility studies, including coincidence measurements with realistic detectors, will be of great interest.

Isotope shifts of ^{223-226,228}Ra^{19}F were measured for different vibrational levels in the electronic transition A^{2}Π_{1/2}←X^{2}Σ^{+}. The observed isotope shifts demonstrate the particularly high sensitivity of radium monofluoride to nuclear size effects, offering a stringent test of models describing the electronic density within the radium nucleus. Ab initio quantum chemical calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental observations. These results highlight some of the unique opportunities that short-lived molecules could offer in nuclear structure and in fundamental symmetry studies.

PURPOSE: After Endoscopic Enucleation of the Prostate (EEP) for benign prostatic obstruction (BPO), men remain at risk for prostate cancer (PCa). Significant PSA changes occur after enucleation, which interfere with later screening for PCa. It remains unclear which patients need further diagnostic investigations for PCa after EEP. The goal of this study was to identify an independent predictor for PCa diagnosis after Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) in patients whose HoLEP resection specimen did not show PCa. METHODS: Data of 773 patients who underwent HoLEP for BPO between 2010 and 2018 in a referral center were analyzed. Exclusion criteria were PCa detection in the HoLEP specimen or absence of post-operative PSA values. Patients were divided in a PCa group and Control group depending on whether or not PCa was detected during follow-up after HoLEP. The predictive value for future diagnosis of PCa of different forms of PSA-change after HoLEP was analyzed by multivariate Cox regression and ROC analysis. RESULTS: Overall, 24 (4.2%) patients developed PCa after HoLEP. At 5 year follow-up, the PCa-free survival rate was 85%. First post-operative PSA was an independent predictor of PCa diagnosis after HoLEP (HR 1.106, 95% CI 1.074-1.139, p < 0.001, ROC AUC 0.903) with an optimal cut-off value of 1.73 ng/ml (sensitivity 83.3%, specificity 82.3%). CONCLUSIONS: For patients who underwent HoLEP for BPO, post-operative PSA after HoLEP is an independent predictor for future PCa diagnosis. When PSA is > 1.73 ng/ml within the first year after HoLEP, rigorous follow-up and diagnostic investigations for PCa are indicated.

The ground-state-to-ground-state ß-decay Q value of ^{135}Cs(7/2^{+})→^{135}Ba(3/2^{+}) has been directly measured for the first time. The measurement was done utilizing both the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron resonance technique and the time-of-flight ion-cyclotron resonance technique at the JYFLTRAP Penning-trap setup and yielded a mass difference of 268.66(30) keV between ^{135}Cs(7/2^{+}) and ^{135}Ba(3/2^{+}). With this very small uncertainty, this measurement is a factor of 3 more precise than the currently adopted Q value in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2016. The measurement confirms that the first-forbidden unique ß^{-}-decay transition ^{135}Cs(7/2^{+})→^{135}Ba(11/2^{-}) is a candidate for antineutrino mass measurements with an ultralow Q value of 0.44(31) keV. This Q value is almost an order of magnitude smaller than those of nuclides presently used in running or planned direct (anti)neutrino mass experiment.

New technical developments have led to a 2 orders of magnitude improvement of the resolution of the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at ISOLDE, CERN, without sacrificing the high efficiency of the CRIS technique. Experimental linewidths of 20(1) MHz were obtained on radioactive beams of francium, allowing us for the first time to determine the electric quadrupole moment of the short lived [t_{1/2}=22.0(5) ms] ^{219}Fr Q_{s}=-1.21(2) eb, which would not have been possible without the advantages offered by the new method. This method relies on a continuous-wave laser and an external Pockels cell to produce narrow-band light pulses, required to reach the high resolution in two-step resonance ionization. Exotic nuclei produced at rates of a few hundred ions/s can now be studied with high resolution, allowing detailed studies of the anchor points for nuclear theories.

BACKGROUND: Robot-Assisted Simple Prostatectomy (RASP) has emerged as a promising alternative in the treatment of benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). However, there is currently a lack of comparative studies evaluating different robotic platforms for performing RASP. Therefore, we aimed to compare perioperative and functional outcomes of RASP performed using the HUGO™ RAS System versus the DaVinci® Xi System. METHODS: Forty consecutive cases of RASP performed between May 2021 and March 2023 with the HUGO™ RAS and the DaVinci® Xi at OLV Hospital (Aalst, Belgium) were included in this retrospective study. All surgeries were performed by three experienced surgeons using the same approach. Baseline characteristics, peri-operative and functional outcomes were collected and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The population was equally divided between the two groups with 20 patients in each group. There were no significant differences in preoperative patient characteristics between the two groups, except for the presence of bladder stones prior to the surgery (p = 0.03). No significant differences in total operative time and console time between the two groups were reported (p = 0.3). No cases required conversion to open surgery or additional port placement. During one case performed with the HUGO™ RAS, a malfunctioning monopolar curved shear had to be replaced. However, there was no statistically significant differences in terms of technical robotic problems between the groups (p = 0.3). There was no significant difference between the two groups in perioperative and functional outcomes (all p ≥ 0.2). CONCLUSIONS: We did not observe any statistically significant difference in perioperative and functional outcomes in case of RASP performed with the HUGO™ RAS System and with the DaVinci® Xi System. These findings provide compelling support for considering the HUGO™ RAS as a promising tool for robot-assisted procedures, thereby expanding the utilization of robotics for benign conditions.

The magnetic moments and isotope shifts of the neutron-deficient francium isotopes (202-205)Fr were measured at ISOLDE-CERN with use of collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy. A production-to-detection efficiency of 1% was measured for (202)Fr. The background from nonresonant and collisional ionization was maintained below one ion in 10(5) beam particles. Through a comparison of the measured charge radii with predictions from the spherical droplet model, it is concluded that the ground-state wave function remains spherical down to (205)Fr, with a departure observed in (203)Fr (N=116).

High-precision hyperfine structure measurements were performed on stable, singly-charged [Formula: see text]Co ions at the IGISOL facility in Jyväskylä, Finland using the collinear laser spectroscopy technique. A newly installed light collection setup enabled the study of transitions in the 230 nm wavelength range from low-lying states below 6000 cm[Formula: see text]. We report a 100-fold improvement on the precision of the hyperfine A parameters, and furthermore present newly measured hyperfine B paramaters.

Understanding the evolution of the nuclear charge radius is one of the long-standing challenges for nuclear theory. Recently, density functional theory calculations utilizing Fayans functionals have successfully reproduced the charge radii of a variety of exotic isotopes. However, difficulties in the isotope production have hindered testing these models in the immediate region of the nuclear chart below the heaviest self-conjugate doubly-magic nucleus 100Sn, where the near-equal number of protons (Z) and neutrons (N) lead to enhanced neutron-proton pairing. Here, we present an optical excursion into this region by crossing the N = 50 magic neutron number in the silver isotopic chain with the measurement of the charge radius of 96Ag (N = 49). The results provide a challenge for nuclear theory: calculations are unable to reproduce the pronounced discontinuity in the charge radii as one moves below N = 50. The technical advancements in this work open the N = Z region below 100Sn for further optical studies, which will lead to more comprehensive input for nuclear theory development.

The incidence of vesicourethral anastomotic stenosis (VUAS) post radical prostatectomy varies from 1 to 26%. Current treatment can be challenging and includes a variety of different procedures. These range from endoscopic dilations to bladder neck reconstruction to urinary diversion. We investigated a 2-stage endoscopic treatment, using the thermo-expandable Memokath®045 bladder neck stent to manage patients with VUAS post radical prostatectomy. We retrospectively reviewed 30 patients, between 2013 and 2017, who underwent a Memokath®045 stent insertion following failed primary treatment (dilation and clean intermittent catheterisation) for VUAS. The mean interval time between prostatectomy and Memokath®045 stent insertion was 13 months. The mean follow-up time was 3.6 years with all patients having a minimum of 12-month follow-up. All patients had two previous attempts at endoscopic dilatation with or without incision and a trial of clean intermittent catheterisation. During stage 1, the anastomotic stricture is dilated/incised to diameter of 30 Fr, the stricture length is measured, and a catheter is left in situ. One to 2 weeks later, post haemostasis and healing, an appropriately sized Memokath®045 stent is inserted. The stent is then removed 1-year post-op. Our series of patients had a median age of 62 (54-72). Most patients (26) had a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) or salvage procedure. Results showed improvement in IPSS scores, IPSS quality of life scores, Qmax and PVR after the Memokath®045 stent was removed compared to pre-operation. With a minimum of 12 months post stent removal, 93% of patients were fully continent, whilst 7% of patients were socially continent. 2 (7%) patients had their stents removed and not replaced due to re-stricturing and stone formation. However, no urinary tract infections, stricture recurrence or urinary retention was observed in the rest of the cohort (93%). Overall, the Memokath®045 stent was successful in treating 93% of our patients with VUAS. Our series had minimal complications that were managed with conservative measures and in three patients' re-operation was needed. In conclusion, the Memokath®045 stent is a minimally invasive technique with faster recovery time compared to other techniques such as bladder neck reconstruction or urinary diversion. Additionally, it provides superior patency results compared to other techniques such as bladder neck incision and injection of Mitomycin C. Therefore, this management option should be considered in the management of VUAS.

BACKGROUND: Salvage Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (sRARP) has been described as feasible treatment for the management of localised prostate cancer (PCa) recurrence after primary treatment. However, no large reports have published cancer and quality outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To report perioperative, functional and oncologic outcomes of sRARP in patients with localised PCa recurrence. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We retrospectively evaluated 106 patients with local recurrence eligible for sRARP. SURGICAL PROCEDURE: Surgery was performed using the DaVinci Si system similar to the standard approach but with adaptation to the primary treatment. MEASUREMENTS: Peri-operative outcomes included 90-day complication rate. Functional outcomes included rates of incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Oncological outcomes included tumour staging, margin rate and recurrence. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: Primary treatment was High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) in 59 (56%) patients, 27 (25%) radiotherapy, 10 (9%) seed brachytherapy, 8 (8%) solitary androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), one (1%) cryotherapy and one (1%) electroporation / Nanoknife. Median follow-up was 2.1 years. 90-day complication rate was 8%. At two years or more, 50% were fully continent and 33% were socially continent. Continence rates tended to be better after focal compared to whole-gland treatments. Erectile dysfunction was present in 95%. Positive surgical margin rate was 39%. Biochemical recurrence occurred in 13% and local or metastatic recurrence in 11%. CONCLUSIONS: sRARP is technically more challenging but is a feasible option in high-volume centres for treatment of recurrent PCa. Patients should be counselled that functional outcomes are inferior to primary RARP. Adjustment of surgical technique according to the primary treatment is key for good surgical outcomes. PATIENT SUMMARY: We report our experience with sRARP for the management of localised PCa recurrence after primary treatment. This represents a feasible approach with acceptable peri-operative complications and cancer outcomes. Functional outcomes are inferior to RARP in the primary setting.

INTRODUCTION: Failure of kidney migration during embryonic life results in an ectopic kidney, with an incidence varying from 1 in 500 to 1 in 1200. Pelvic kidney can be a rare cause of recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI), warranting nephrectomy in some cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 7-year-old girl with a history of recurrent UTIs and vaginal discharge was diagnosed with a dysplastic afunctional ectopic kidney located in the pelvis, with ureter draining into the cervix or vaginal wall. RESULTS: A robot-assisted approach was chosen, with side docking of the robot to allow concurrent vaginoscopic/hysteroscopic exploration. A uterus bicornis was found. The ectopic ureter was dissected toward its drainage in the vaginal wall, where it was sutured and resected. The dysplastic kidney and ureter were removed. Compared to pure laparoscopic approach, dissection deep into the pelvis toward the vaginal wall is aided by the robotic dexterity and facilitates complete resection of the structure, which avoids leaving a ureteric stump into the vaginal wall. CONCLUSIONS: Robot-assisted surgery is a safe and effective option for resection of ectopic kidneys with ectopic ureter in children. Dissection up until the vaginal wall in children is aided by robotic dexterity, making this kind of surgery the ideal indication for robotic-assisted surgery.

Resonant laser ionization and spectroscopy are widely used techniques at radioactive ion beam facilities to produce pure beams of exotic nuclei and measure the shape, size, spin and electromagnetic multipole moments of these nuclei. However, in such measurements it is difficult to combine a high efficiency with a high spectral resolution. Here we demonstrate the on-line application of atomic laser ionization spectroscopy in a supersonic gas jet, a technique suited for high-precision studies of the ground- and isomeric-state properties of nuclei located at the extremes of stability. The technique is characterized in a measurement on actinium isotopes around the N=126 neutron shell closure. A significant improvement in the spectral resolution by more than one order of magnitude is achieved in these experiments without loss in efficiency.

OBJECTIVES: To examine perioperative and oncologic outcomes of open (ORC) and robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) in bladder cancer (BCa) patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: 368 consecutive patients with cT1-4 M0 BCa treated at two high-volume European centers between 2004 and 2013 were evaluated. Data on complications, operative time, blood loss, postoperative transfusion, reoperation, length of stay (LOS), positive margins, recurrence, cancer-specific mortality (CSM), and overall survival were evaluated. Uni- and multivariable regression analyses tested the impact of the surgical approach on perioperative and oncologic outcomes. RESULTS: Overall, 230 (62.5%) and 138 (37.5%) patients were treated with ORC and RARC. In multivariable analyses RARC patients had higher odds of prolonged operative time and low-grade complications (all P ≤ 0.001). Patients treated with ORC had higher odds of blood loss >500 ml and prolonged LOS (all P ≤ 0.03). No differences were observed in high-grade complications and positive margins (all P ≥ 0.06). No differences were observed in 5-year recurrence-free and CSM-free survival rates between patients treated with ORC vs. RARC (57.1 vs. 54.2% and 61.9 vs. 73.5%; all P ≥ 0.3). This was confirmed in multivariable analyses, where the surgical approach was not associated with the risk of recurrence and CSM (all P ≥ 0.1). CONCLUSIONS: Although ORC might be associated with a shorter operative time, RARC led to lower blood loss and shorter LOS. No differences exist in high-grade complications and positive margins. RARC and ORC provide similar oncologic control.

RESUMO

The reactions of substituted anilines with sodium hydroxymethanesulfonate to form the anilinomethanesulfonates were studied in 50% ethanol--water at 0--50 degrees. The Arrhenius rate constants were 5.4 X 10(10) exp(--16,400/RT) M-1 min-1 for aniline, 4.8 X 10(11) exp(--17,100RT) M-1 min-1 for p-anisidine, 7.1 X 10(9) exp(--14,500/RT) M-1 min-1 for p-toluidine, 1.5 X 10(13) exp(--21,100/RT) M-1 min-1 for p-chloroaniline, and 1.1 X 10(12) exp(--19,800/RT) M-l min-1 for p-bromoaniline. Some equilibrium constants and hydrolysis rate constants of the products also were calculated. Hydrolysis rate constants were temperature independent. These reactions had a p value of --3.40 in the Hammett equation. The solvent concentrations used proved to be very convenient for obtaining high yields of the aminomethanesulfonates.

RESUMO

Two series of anilinomethanesulfonate derivatives, the anilinium and p-toluidinium anilinomethanesulfonates, were synthesized. They present interesting spectroscopic features and can be used as characteristic derivatives of the parent compounds. These series allow the easy study of the N--H stretching frequencies of the secondary amine whereas difficulties are encountered with the parent compounds due to the occurrence of O--H stretching bands in the same frequency range. All three compounds present a common fragmentation pattern in mass spectral analysis. Through these analyses, the salt structure of the anilinium anilinomethanesulfonates is demonstrated in opposition to a sulfonamide structure, giving further support to the salt structure of other series previously reported.
