RESUMO
Antarctica, an area that is devoted to global peace and research, is being challenged by climate change, human activities, and pollution. There have been a number of studies concerning the state of the Antarctic ecological environment. However, a comprehensive and quantitative assessment of the impact of threats on the Antarctica ecological environment is still lacking. In this study, a cumulative impact assessment performed on the basis of expert judgement was used to estimate species-specific differences on the impact of seven threats: climate change, organic and nonorganic pollutants, station construction, power generation, oil spilling, and tourism. The terrestrial area of the Fildes Peninsula was divided into 103 cells using a raster grid of 0.25 km2, and cumulative impact assessment was applied to each cell. The analysis results indicated that cumulative impact scores (IC) ranged from 0 to 39.4, and the cumulative scores were divided into six categories ranging from very low impact (IC ≤ 7.08) to very high impact (IC > 20.54). More than half of the terrestrial area (57.3%) experienced "Very Low Impact" or "Low impact" scores. For single factors, climate change was identified as a rapidly growing and significant threat facing the terrestrial ecosystems of Antarctica. In addition, tourism had the greatest impact among all human activities. The analytical process and resulting map indicate that it is necessary to develop international policies on the restriction of tourist activity space and strength the organic pollutant controls for terrestrial ecosystem protection in the Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica.

The thickness estimation of the top surface layer and surface layer, as well as the detection of road defects, are of great importance to the quality conditions of asphalt pavement. Although ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods have been widely used in non-destructive detection of pavements, the thickness estimation of the thin top surface layer is still a difficult problem due to the limitations of GPR resolution and the similar permittivity of asphalt sub-layers. Besides, the detection of some road defects, including inadequate compaction and delamination at interfaces, require further practical study. In this paper, a newly-developed vehicle-mounted GPR detection system is introduced. We used a horizontal high-pass filter and a modified layer localization method to extract the underground layers. Besides, according to lab experiments and simulation analysis, we proposed theoretical methods for detecting the degree of compaction and delamination at the interface, respectively. Moreover, a field test was carried out and the estimated results showed a satisfactory accuracy of the system and methods.
RESUMO
Neonicotinoids (NNIs) constitute commonly used pesticides across various regions, however, the lack of research and data on its long-term effects and threshold levels within specific ecosystems have left an important knowledge gap. This study aimed to comprehensively examine NNI concentrations and their potential impacts on human health and aquatic organisms in the region of the Yangtze River Basin (YRB). The study employed datasets on seven commonly applied NNIs across 244 surface water samples collected from 12 distinct geographic sites within the YRB. The relative potency factor was used to evaluate human exposure risks, while the species sensitivity distribution could estimate acute and chronic hazardous concentrations for 5% of species (HC5) for NNIs impacting aquatic organisms. Analysis revealed varying NNI concentrations across the sampled sites, with thiacloprid recording the lowest concentration at 0.1 ng L-1, and dinotefuran recording a high concentration of 408 ng L-1. The observation indicated NNI concentration declined at sampling sites downstream of the YRB. Infants were identified as the most vulnerable to NNI exposure, with an estimated daily intake of 40.8 ng kg-1 bw d-1. The acute HC5 was determined at 946 ng L-1 and a chronic HC5 at 338 ng L-1, to NNI hazards. These findings highlight the urgent need for a more comprehensive understanding of the ecological implications and hazards posed by NNIs within the YRB. Variations in NNI concentrations across sites, potential risks to human health, and increased vulnerability of aquatic organisms from this study underscore the necessity for further research and concerted efforts to mitigate these ecological threats in the region.

Neonicotinoids are widely used insecticides that have raised considerable concerns for both environmental and human health. However, there lack of comprehensive evaluation of their accumulation in surface water ecosystems and exposure to various human groups. Additionally, there's a distinct lack of scientific evidence describing the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic impacts of neonicotinoids from surface water. Using an integrated approach employing the Relative Potency Factor (RPF), Hazard Index (HI), and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS), the study assessed neonicotinoid exposure and risk to four demographic groups via dermal contact and mistaken oral intake pathways in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB), China. Neonicotinoid concentrations range from 0.1 to 408.12 ng/L, indicating potential risk (10-3 to 10-1) across the studied demographic groups. The Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) for dermal contact was within a moderate range of 2.00 × 10-3 to 1.67 × 10-2, while the mistaken oral intake was also within a moderate range of 3.07 × 10-3 to 7.05 × 10-3. The Hazard Index (HI) for dermal exposure ranged from 1.49 × 10-2 to 0.125, while for mistaken oral intake, it varied between 2.69 × 10-2 and 0.14. The findings highlight the importance of implementing specific interventions to address neonicotinoid exposure, especially among demographic groups that are more susceptible. This research underscores the urgent need for targeted strategies to address neonicotinoid risks to vulnerable populations within the YRB while contributing to insights for effective policies to mitigate neonicotinoid exposure in surface water ecosystems globally.

Van der Waals heterostructures have opened new opportunities to develop atomically thin (opto)electronic devices with a wide range of functionalities. The recent focus on manipulating the interlayer twist angle has led to the observation of out-of-plane room temperature ferroelectricity in twisted rhombohedral bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides. Here we explore the switching behaviour of sliding ferroelectricity using scanning probe microscopy domain mapping and tunnelling transport measurements. We observe well-pronounced ambipolar switching behaviour in ferroelectric tunnelling junctions with composite ferroelectric/non-polar insulator barriers and support our experimental results with complementary theoretical modelling. Furthermore, we show that the switching behaviour is strongly influenced by the underlying domain structure, allowing the fabrication of diverse ferroelectric tunnelling junction devices with various functionalities. We show that to observe the polarisation reversal, at least one partial dislocation must be present in the device area. This behaviour is drastically different from that of conventional ferroelectric materials, and its understanding is an important milestone for the future development of optoelectronic devices based on sliding ferroelectricity.
RESUMO
Colonial cyanobacteria have been identified as the primary contributor to the global occurrence of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs), which are further intensified by the presence of "pseudo-persistent" antibiotics. Nevertheless, the impact of antibiotics on the growth and size of colonial cyanobacteria remains unclear. In this study, the response of cyanobacterium Microcystis to varying doses of antibiotics was assessed (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 10, and 50 µg L-1) by comparing the unicellular and colonial morphotypes. Interestingly, the morphological structure of cyanobacteria plays a significant role in their reaction to antibiotics. In comparison to the unicellular morphotype, the colonial morphotype exhibited a greater promotion in growth rate (11 %-22 %) to low doses of antibiotics and was less inhibited (-121 %--62 %) under high doses. Furthermore, antibiotics may affect the size of cyanobacterial colonies by disrupting the secretion of algal organic matter, which also exhibited a two-phase pattern. This work sheds light on the significance of methodology research involving both unicellular and colonial cyanobacteria. Future research and lake management should prioritize studying the morphological traits of cyanobacteria under different levels of antibiotic exposure. This approach may lead to novel strategies for predicting cyanoHABs under antibiotic pollution more effectively.

Twisted heterostructures of two-dimensional crystals offer almost unlimited scope for the design of new metamaterials. Here we demonstrate a room temperature ferroelectric semiconductor that is assembled using mono- or few-layer MoS2. These van der Waals heterostructures feature broken inversion symmetry, which, together with the asymmetry of atomic arrangement at the interface of two 2D crystals, enables ferroelectric domains with alternating out-of-plane polarization arranged into a twist-controlled network. The last can be moved by applying out-of-plane electrical fields, as visualized in situ using channelling contrast electron microscopy. The observed interfacial charge transfer, movement of domain walls and their bending rigidity agree well with theoretical calculations. Furthermore, we demonstrate proof-of-principle field-effect transistors, where the channel resistance exhibits a pronounced hysteresis governed by pinning of ferroelectric domain walls. Our results show a potential avenue towards room temperature electronic and optoelectronic semiconductor devices with built-in ferroelectric memory functions.
RESUMO
Scene text recognition has been widely researched with supervised approaches. Most existing algorithms require a large amount of labeled data and some methods even require character-level or pixel-wise supervision information. However, labeled data is expensive, unlabeled data is relatively easy to collect, especially for many languages with fewer resources. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised method for scene text recognition. Specifically, we design two global metrics, i.e., edit reward and embedding reward, to evaluate the quality of generated string and adopt reinforcement learning techniques to directly optimize these rewards. The edit reward measures the distance between the ground truth label and the generated string. Besides, the image feature and string feature are embedded into a common space and the embedding reward is defined by the similarity between the input image and generated string. It is natural that the generated string should be the nearest with the image it is generated from. Therefore, the embedding reward can be obtained without any ground truth information. In this way, we can effectively exploit a large number of unlabeled images to improve the recognition performance without any additional laborious annotations. Extensive experimental evaluations on the five challenging benchmarks, the Street View Text, IIIT5K, and ICDAR datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, and our method significantly reduces annotation effort while maintaining competitive recognition performance.
RESUMO
The sink-source controversy for global polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in high-latitude seas is extremely concerning. A level III fugacity model was developed for the southern Chukchi Sea to estimate the fate of 16 priority PAHs. The model results indicate large losses were due to seawater advection outflow, followed by degradation in seawater. The Chukchi Sea serves as a source of 4 PAHs (i.e., Nap, Ace, Acp and Fl) in the atmosphere and sediment but acts as a final sink for the other 12 PAHs. The water-air diffusion flux and wet deposition flux play dominant roles in the total transfer flux of the 4 PAHs and the other 12 PAHs, respectively. The source/sink role that high-latitude seas play in PAH distribution has changed under the influence of global climate change. The model proposed in this study provides an approach to support further study of the fate of PAHs in high-latitude seas.

In this study, we reported the occurrence of eight organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in the East China Sea. Forty samples were collected and analysed with a high volume solid phase extraction method (Hi-throat/Hi-volume SPE) in the early summer of 2020. All the target OPPs were detected in the surface water at one or more stations in the East China Sea, and the concentrations of ΣOPPs were in the range 0.0775-3.09 ng/L (mean: 0.862 ± 0.624 ng/L). Terbufos sulfone and fenthion were the main pollutants in this area, probably resulting from pesticide use in China and other countries. The off-shore input from coastal regions was suggested to be a major source of OPP pollution in the East China Sea, and the movement of ocean currents played an important role in their transportation because around 0.86 t OPPs passed through the Tsushima Strait from the East China Sea each month. An ecological risk assessment showed that these OPPs presented a high risk to species in the East China Sea, whereas they posed no health risk to humans under both the median and high exposure scenario.

Long-term monitoring is essential for revealing pollution trends, but relevant studies in the Antarctic remain limited. In this study, a seven-year continuous monitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere and soil was carried out at the Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica. Average concentrations of Σ15PAHs were 7134.491 pg/m3 and 61.093 ng/g in air and soil, respectively. A declining trend was observed for Σ15PAHs in air during the 2013-2019 summer, but this was not found in soil. Potential sources of PAHs in the Fildes Peninsula were identified by PMF modeling, correlation analysis, air mass back-trajectories and component analysis. The results showed that PAHs in the gas phase were more easily influenced by long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) than in the particle phase. Moreover, temperature played a key role in the PAHs concentration in particle phase. Occurrence of Σ15PAHs in soil was mainly attributed to local sources including fossil fuel combustion and spilling.

Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in air and seawater were investigated from the Northwestern Pacific to the Arctic Ocean. The concentration of Σ11OPEs in air and seawater ranged from 231.56 to 1884.25 pg/m3 and from 8.47 to 143.45 ng/L, respectively. Halogenated OPEs dominated in both two media. The slight decreasing trend was observed for OPEs in gaseous air, no obvious trend for particle-bound OPEs and in seawater. The net air-seawater exchange flux ranged from -792.68 to 590.29 pg/m2/day. The dry deposition flux ranged from 16.4 to 185 ng/m2/day with high value observed at the Bering Strait (64.70 ng/m2/day). The relationship between temperature and OPEs particle-bound fractions suggests that temperature might be a driving factor of OPEs long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT). This research highlighted that OPEs are subject to LRAT from the Asian continent to the northwestern Pacific and Arctic Oceans and demonstrated the "sink" in polar regions of OPEs atmospheric transportation.

Fifteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected in seawater and atmosphere of Bransfield Strait. The concentration of ∑15[PAH] in the atmosphere ranged from 3.75 to 8.53â¯ngâ¯m-3, and three-ring PAHs were the most abundant compounds. Dissolved ∑15[PAH] in seawater ranged from 5.42 to 34.37â¯ngâ¯L-1, and the level of PAHs was markedly different on each side of the strait. The air-sea gas exchange process and molecular diagnostic ratios were calculated, results showed that the environmental behavior of PAHs was net deposition along this cruise. Given the changes in global transport routes of pollutants under global warming, the role of long-range transport (LRT) may be enhanced. Taking the Antarctic as a sink of PAHs due to the LRT and net deposition, PAHs will continue to load into the seawater of this area via atmospheric deposition, which contributes to improving our understanding of the environmental behavior of PAHs.

China's Chang'E-3 (CE-3) spacecraft touched down on the northern Mare Imbrium of the lunar nearside (340.49°E, 44.12°N), a region not directly sampled before. We report preliminary results with data from the CE-3 lander descent camera and from the Yutu rover's camera and penetrating radar. After the landing at a young 450-meter crater rim, the Yutu rover drove 114 meters on the ejecta blanket and photographed the rough surface and the excavated boulders. The boulder contains a substantial amount of crystals, which are most likely plagioclase and/or other mafic silicate mineral aggregates similar to terrestrial dolerite. The Lunar Penetrating Radar detection and integrated geological interpretation have identified more than nine subsurface layers, suggesting that this region has experienced complex geological processes since the Imbrian and is compositionally distinct from the Apollo and Luna landing sites.
