RESUMO
As a type of mode-locked fiber laser, fiber frequency-shifted feedback lasers (FSFLs) have been rarely studied regarding the buildup process of mode locking. We carried out an experimental investigation to show the unique characteristics of the process, such as the direct evolution of the Q switched mode-locked state to the mode-locked state, the unique phenomenon of spectral center frequency oscillation, evolution to a double-pulse state in harmonic mode locking, millisecond stabilization time, and exponentially decreasing change of relative phase per round trip. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the double-beam heterodyne method is applied to measure the evolution of laser spectra with pulse width in the nanosecond range. Understanding the unique buildup mechanism may aid in the engineering and application of FSFLs.
RESUMO
Lin28a and Lin28b, homologs of the Caenorhabditis elegans Lin28 gene, play important roles in cell pluripotency, reprogramming, and tumorigenicity. Recently, genome-wide association and transgenic studies showed that Lin28a and/or Lin28b gene were involved in the onset of mammalian puberty, the stage representing the attainment of reproduction capacity; however, the detailed mechanism of these genes in mammalian puberty remains largely unknown. The present paper reviews the research progress on the roles of Lin28a/b genes in the onset of mammalian puberty by analyzing the results coming from gene expression patterns, mutations, and transgenic studies, and put forward possible pathways for further studies on their roles in animal reproduction.

We present an all-fiber frequency shifter (AFFS) consisting of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) modulated via an acoustic flexural wave for optical heterodyne measurement. The AFFS can efficiently generate the frequency-shifted signal due to the resonance peak with a high-reflection efficiency and being completely separated from the reflection spectrum of the original FBG, simultaneously. The experimental result shows that the minimal measurable vibration amplitude and the resolution of the all-fiber optical heterodyne measurement setup constructed with the AFFS are 0.06 nm and 30 pm in the region of tens to hundreds of kilohertz, respectively.
