RESUMO

Observation of the interplay between interacting energy levels of two spin species is limited by the difficulties in continuously tracking energy levels and thus leaves spin transport in quantum wires still not well understood. We present a dc conductance feature in the nonequilibrium transport regime, a direct indication that the first one-dimensional subband is filled mostly by one spin species only. How this anomalous spin population changes with magnetic field and source-drain bias is directly measured. We show the source-drain bias changes spin polarization in semiconductor nanowires, providing a fully electrical method for the creation and manipulation of spin polarization as well as spin-polarized currents.

RESUMO

Efrotomycin is an N-methylhydroxypyridone glycoside antibiotic with activity primarily against Gram-positive bacteria. It is intended for use as a feed additive for swine. Although efrotomycin is unrelated to any antibacterial drug used in human or veterinary medicine, the possibility of cross-resistance with other antibacterials is of concern. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of efrotomycin were determined for a broad panel of bacterial isolates. In addition, the susceptibility of each isolate to 12-15 antibacterials was determined using a standardized disk susceptibility test. No evidence of cross-resistance between efrotomycin and any of the 12-15 antibacterial compounds was observed. When the MIC of efrotomycin for nine selected isolates was increased from 16- to greater than 100-fold by serial passage in subinhibitory concentrations of efrotomycin, no increased resistance to the 15 antibacterials was noted. Subinhibitory concentrations of efrotomycin had no effect on the conjugative transfer of antibacterial-resistance plasmids between K-12 strains of Escherichia coli. The data from this study suggest that if resistance to efrotomycin should occur, it is unlikely to result in the appearance of multiply-resistant bacterial populations.

RESUMO

Twenty-seven isolates of Bordetella bronchiseptica were examined for the presence of plasmid DNA. Eleven of the isolates contained plasmids. An attempt was made to correlate the presence of plasmids with resistance to a number of antibiotics or heavy metals or with production of bacteriocins. Eight of the isolates contained a plasmid of approximately 35 megadaltons molecular weight; these isolates were all resistant to 1 mM mercuric chloride. There were no other correlations between plasmid content and any of the phenotypes tested. The plasmids conferring resistance to mercuric chloride were transferred by conjugation to Escherichia coli K-12. The plasmid-bearing isolates were then compared with their isogenic plasmidless parent for resistance to a number of antibiotics. Isolates acquiring the plasmids demonstrated increased resistance to streptomycin and ampicillin, as well as to mercuric chloride. The 8 plasmids were also analyzed by restriction endonuclease digestion.

RESUMO

A case is described of a 3-year-old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) who presented initially with aspergillosis of the nasopharynx. Fungal infection with Aspergillus species is not uncommon in immunosuppressed children, but this case is noteworth in that the disease presented at the onset of therapy rather than during the phase of treatment, with maximum immunosuppression following chemotherapy. This type of infection is usually associated with the treatment of acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemias (AML) rather than ALL, and prolonged periods of neutropenia which results from aggressive treatment. This patient responded rapidly to treatment with amphotericin B, coincident with resolution of his neutropenia as the underlying disease was treated, eventually eradicating the fungus.

RESUMO

In quantum Hall systems, both anticrossings and magnetic phase transitions can occur when opposite-spin Landau levels coincide. Our results indicate that both processes are also possible in quasi-1D quantum wires in an in-plane B field, Bparallel. Crossings of opposite-spin 1D subbands resemble magnetic phase transitions at zero dc source-drain bias, but display anticrossings at high dc bias. Our data also imply that the well-known 0.7 structure may evolve into a spin-hybridized state in finite dc bias.

RESUMO

The assessment of motor block associated with epidural analgesia is traditionally performed using the modified Bromage Score. However, it is a qualitative and quantitative measurement of both spread and intensity of motor block in the lower limbs, and it has been adapted from Bromage's original use as an assessment of the adequacy of epidural anaesthesia for abdominal surgery. A number of quantitative assessment methods exist but these are either laboratory based and/or impracticable in the clinical situation of labour. We therefore set out to devise a quantitative assessment method which would be easy to use and acceptable to labouring women receiving epidural analgesia. A force transducer was modified to enable power of hip adduction to be assessed quantitatively before and after epidural analgesia was established. These results were compared with the modified Bromage Scale and an extended scale which further subdivided the scores between 0 and 1. Our results show that there is a large variation in the quantitative measurement of motor block (as measured by adductor strength) that may not be detected by the sole use of the modified Bromage Score. We suggest that future studies to assess motor block in the clinical setting use an additional quantitative method of assessment.

RESUMO

Nearly all of 62 strains of Salmonella paratyphi B were sensitive to colicin M and phage T5 but resistant to phages T1 and ES18 and to colicin B. All tested S. typhimurium strains were resistant to colicin M and phage T5, and many were sensitive to phage ES18. A rough S. typhimurium LT2 strain given the tonA region of Escherichia coli or S. paratyphi B became sensitive to colicin M and phage T5. We infer that the tonA allele of S. paratyphi B, like that of E. coli, determines an outer membrane protein that adsorbs T5 and colicin M but not phage ES18, whereas the S. typhimurium allele determines a protein able to adsorb only ES18. The partial T1 sensitivity of a rough LT2 strain with a tonA allele from E. coli or S. paratyphi B and also the tonB(+) phentotype of an E. coli B trp-tonB Delta mutant carrying an F' trp of LT2 origin showed that S. typhimurium LT2 has a tonB allele like that of E. coli with respect to determination of sensitivity to colicins and phage T1. Rough S. paratyphi B, although T5 sensitive, remained resistant to T1 even when given F' tonB(+) of E. coli origin. Classes of Salmonella mutants selected as resistant to colicin M included: T5-resistant mutants, probably tonA(-); mutants unchanged except for M resistance, perhaps tolerant; and Exb(+) mutants, producing a colicin inhibitor (presumably enterochelin). Some Exb(+) mutants were resistant to a bacteriocin inactive on E. coli but active on all tested S. paratyphi B and S. typhimurium strains (and on nearly all other tested Salmonella). A survey showed sensitivity to colicin M in several other species of Salmonella.

RESUMO

We investigated the necessity for administration of supplementary oxygen to mothers undergoing elective Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia. Sixty-nine women undergoing elective Caesarean section were randomly allocated to one of three groups to be given either oxygen (40%) by facemask, air by facemask or oxygen at 2 l x min(-1) by nasal cannulae. Umbilical arterial and venous blood samples were taken and analysed immediately after delivery. The results showed that there were no significant differences in the umbilical arterial or venous pH, partial pressure of oxygen and partial pressure of carbon dioxide between any of the three groups. We also assessed the patient acceptability of oxygen administered by facemask vs. nasal cannulae should the need for supplementary oxygen arise. It was found that use of the facemask impeded communication.

RESUMO

We present scanning-probe images and magnetic-field plots which reveal fractal conductance fluctuations in a quantum billiard. The quantum billiard is drawn and tuned using erasable electrostatic lithography, where the scanning probe draws patterns of surface charge in the same environment used for measurements. A periodicity in magnetic field, which is observed in both the images and plots, suggests the presence of classical orbits. Subsequent high-pass filtered high-resolution images resemble the predicted probability density of scarred wave functions, which describe the classical orbits.

RESUMO

We report conductance measurements of ballistic one-dimensional (1D) wires defined in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures in an in-plane magnetic field, B. When the Zeeman energy is equal to the 1D subband energy spacing, the spin-split subband N upward arrow intersects (N+1) downward arrow, where N is the index of the spin-degenerate 1D subband. At the crossing of N=1 upward arrow and N=2 downward arrow subbands, there is a spontaneous splitting giving rise to an additional conductance structure evolving from the 1.5(2e(2)/h) plateau. With further increase in B, the structure develops into a plateau and lowers to 2e(2)/h. With increasing temperature and magnetic field the structure shows characteristics of the 0.7 structure. Our results suggest that at low densities a spontaneous spin splitting occurs whenever two 1D subbands of opposite spins cross.

RESUMO

We have measured the nonequilibrium current noise in a ballistic one-dimensional wire which exhibits an additional conductance plateau at 0.7x2e(2)/h. The Fano factor shows a clear reduction on the 0.7 structure, and eventually vanishes upon applying a strong parallel magnetic field. These results provide experimental evidence that the 0.7 structure is associated with two conduction channels that have different transmission probabilities.

RESUMO

Lonchocarpol A, a flavanone, demonstrates in vitro inhibitory activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. This activity is antagonized by mouse plasma, which may account for its lack of in vivo activity. This compound demonstrates no differentiation with respect to the inhibition of RNA, DNA, cell wall, and protein synthesis.
