RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of concentrated growth factor(CGF) on soft tissue healing and postoperative side effects following third molar surgery. METHODS: This study was designed on 60 patients as a randomized single-blind clinical trial. The predictor variable was the implementation of CGF fibrin matrix, which was categorized as CGF and non-CGF. The primary outcome variable of the study was the healing of soft tissue around the extraction socket. The secondary outcome variables were pain, swelling and trismus. Data were analyzed using the non-parametric Brunner and Langer model. Statistical significance was set at P<.001. RESULTS: Sixty patients (39 female, 21 male; mean age 25.82) with impacted mandibular third molars participated in the study. Statistical analysis revealed that there were significant differences between the control and test groups with regard to soft tissue healing, postoperative pain, swelling, and trismus (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The application of CGF accelerates soft tissue healing and is beneficial in minimising postoperative side effects, particularly pain, swelling and trismus, after extraction of mandibular third molars. CLINICAL TRIALS NUMBER: NCT03913884.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Botulinum toxin has been used mainly in the treatment of muscular temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) and hyperactivity of the masticatory muscles. It is used also as a therapeutic option to relieve pain and help in functional recovery from dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery. The aim of our study was to investigate the efficacy of botulinum toxin injection in the treatment of muscular TMD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of the 200 temporomandibular joint patients who applied for treatment, 25 patients with muscular dysfunction of the origin were included in the study. This patient group received drug, drug - physical therapy, occlusal splint therapy and botulinum toxin. These treatments were performed step by step. Botulinum toxin was applied, in accordance with reflex measurement in electromyography guidelines to nine patients whose results were not success from the other treatments had not been successful. Measurements were taken of bite force, pain and mouth openness. RESULTS: Sixteen patients were treated with drug-physical therapy-occlusal splint therapy, and botulinum toxin treatment was found to be successful in the case of nine patients. No side effects were observed at six months follow-up. CONCLUSION: Botulinum toxin injection for the treatment of muscular temporomandibular joint disorder is a viable treatment option in the case of patients who do not respond to conservative treatment methods.

RESUMO

A case of myiasis gingiva was diagnosed in an investigation designed to evaluate the histopathological features of the adjacent tissues of 100 advanced periodontal lesions. The patient was a 36-year old female and her chief complaint was discomfort and swelling in the area between the upper left central and lateral incisors. The patient's medical history, review of the symptoms, and family history were non-contributory and her oral hygiene was acceptable. The surgeon was not aware of anything unusual during the operation. Although the Parasitology Department was unable to define the entomologic identification of the infesting parasite from histopathological tissue slides, it was agreed that this case of myiasis might be produced by larvae of genus Sarcophaga or Enterobius vermicularis.

RESUMO

This paper describes a case of transmission of herpetic whitlow to the index finger of a dental student from a patient with herpes simplex virus. The recognition of intraoral viral infections in patients is important because these viruses have serious implications for health care providers. Rubber gloves must be worn when patients with primary or secondary herpetic lesions are treated. Asymptomatic permanent herpes virus carriers must also be treated with appropriate precautions.

RESUMO

The antiplaque potential of zinc salts has been previously demonstrated. The purpose of the present investigation was to establish the effect of zinc chloride dentifrices on plaque growth and on the concentration of zinc in saliva and plaque. Zinc levels in saliva and plaque were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Elevated zinc levels were observed in saliva and in plaque for 1 hour after contact with a zinc chloride dentifrice. Increased concentrations of zinc were also observed in plaque residue. Further analysis of data showed that subjects with high rates of plaque growth benefited more from the zinc dentifrices than did those with low rates of plaque growth.

RESUMO

Ameloblastic odontoma is a mixed odontogenic tumor, which is characterized as being extremely rare, displaying aggressive clinical behavior, resembling a mixed radiopaque and radiolucent radiographic appearance and containing both ameloblastoma and a composite odontoma. An eleven-year-old boy complaining of the edentulous area at the anterior maxilla, was seen at the Department of Oral Surgery of Ege University Dental Faculty. The lesion presented a radiopaque and radiolucent features on panoramic radiogram. Locally operated lesion was diagnosed as ameloblastic odontoma, because it contains islands of ameloblastoma with calcified dental structures as odontoma. The patient was followed-up for 7 years and no recurrence was seen. This case is presented because of its rarity, early detection in an edentulous area of a child, and the successful choice of treatment.

RESUMO

Williams syndrome is a rare syndrome. It usually can be diagnosed first in dental clinics because of the typical oral and facial features of the syndrome. The aim of this article is to report this 8 year old Turkish boy with Williams syndrome, and to revise the dental features of these special patients and the dental treatment procedures that can be followed for these patients.

RESUMO

Orofaciodigital syndrome I is a syndrome, which affects the maxillofacial region. Abnormally developed vestibular frenulum, cleft tongue, asymmetric cleft palate, pseudocleft of the upper lip and hypoplasia of the nasal cartilages are some of the other features. There are some malformations in foot and hand fingers and also mild mental deficiency is present. OFD I syndrome follows an chi-linked dominant mode of transmission trait limited to females and lethal in males. Because of the esthetic and functional manifestations in the maxillofacial region, the syndrome has great importance for pediatric dentistry.

RESUMO

A histologic study was conducted in 5 diabetic and 5 non-diabetic albino rabbits to determine the effect of experimentally induced diabetes upon the number of gingival plasma cells and lymphocytes in the absence and presence of local factors, and IgG, IgM and IgA levels of the four groups were compared with each other. In conclusion, local factors were primarily responsible for the increase of the gingival plasma cells and lymphocytes. There was no statistically significant difference between the diabetic and non-diabetic group in the absence of local factors. Also, there was no marked difference between the serum IgG, IgA and IgM levels of all groups.
