RESUMO

AlGaN microdisks were fabricated via a top-down process using electron-beam lithography, inductively coupled plasma reactive-ion etching, and hydrogen-environment thermal etching from commercial epitaxial wafers with a 100-300 nm thick AlGaN layer grown on a c-plane GaN layer by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The hydrogen-environment thermal etching performed well in undercutting the AlGaN microdisks owing to the selective etching for the GaN layer. The AlGaN microdisks acted as the whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical microresonators, exhibiting sharp resonant peaks in room temperature photoluminescence spectra. The evanescent component of the whispering gallery mode (WGM) is influenced by the ambient condition of the microdisk, resulting in the shift of the resonant peaks. The phenomenon is considered to be used for microsensors. Using the WGM in the AlGaN microdisks, we demonstrated microsensors and a microsensor system, which can potentially be used to evaluate biological and chemical actions in a microscale area in real time.

Using room temperature photoluminescence measurements, we have demonstrated a sensing operation based on hexagonal GaN microdisks with a side length of approximately 1.5 µm that acted as optical microcavities. In the experiment, the optical microresonant systems based on the whispering-gallery mode (WGM) in the microdisks were affected by their ambient conditions, resulting in shifts of the lasing wavelength by varying the mixing ratios of isopropanol and o-xylene. We also obtained such shifts for aqueous solutions with varying sucrose concentrations. In addition, we demonstrated that tiny waterborne particles can be detected using a microdisk. These results indicate that the WGM in the hexagonal GaN microdisks potentially can be used to develop optical microbiosensors that can evaluate a limited area with a radius of 1-2 µm.

We study a quantum cone, a novel structure composed of multiple quantum dots with gradually decreasing diameters from the base to the top. The dot distribution leads to a dispersive radiated spectrum. The blue edge of the spectrum is determined by the quantum confinement of excitons on top of the cones, while the red edge is determined by the bandgap of a semiconductor. We observe the kinetics of photoluminescence by obeying the stretch-exponential law from quantum cones formed on the surface of diamond-like carbon (DLC). They are explained by an increase in the lifetime of excitons along the height of the cone from the top to the base of the cone and an increasing concentration of excitons at the base due to their drift in the quasi-built-in electric field of the quantum cone. The possible visualization of the quantum cone tops of DLC using irradiation by a UV light source is shown. A quantum cone is an innovative nano-source of light because it substitutes for two elements in a conventional spectrometer: a source of light and a dispersive element-an ultrafast monochromator. These features enable the building of a nano-spectrometer to measure the absorbance spectra of virus and molecule particles.

A quantum prism, a new structure, consisting of many quantum wires with a diameter that gradually decreases from the base to the top, is the focus of our research. This distribution of quantum wires leads to a dispersive emitted spectrum. The red edge of the spectrum is determined by the band gap width of the bulk semiconductor, and the blue edge is determined by the quantum size of the excitons at the top of the prism. The PL spectrum of the silicon prismatic sample was excited by weak and strong light absorption. At weak absorption (hνex = 1.2 eV), the PL spectrum is located in the visible part of the spectrum, from 1.4 eV to 1.9 eV, with an energy higher than the band gap of the Si crystal. Such a "blue shift" of PL spectra by 0.7 eV is characteristic of the quantum confinement effect. It is a rainbow spectrum with an optical upconversion. The quantum prism is a new type of nano light source, as it replaces two elements in a conventional spectrometer: a light source and a dispersive element. These features enable to create a nano-spectrometer for measuring the absorption spectrum of individual molecules or viruses.

Deep red phosphors have attracted much attention for their applications in lighting, medical diagnosis, health monitoring, agriculture, etc. A new phosphor host material based on fluorine-doped lithium aluminate (ALFO) was proposed and deep red emission from Cr3+ in this host material was demonstrated. Cr3+ in ALFO was excited by blue (~410 nm) and green (~570 nm) rays and covered the deep red to near-infrared region from 650 nm to 900 nm with peaks around 700 nm. ALFO was a fluorine-doped form of the spinel-type compound LiAl5O8 with slightly Li-richer compositions. The composition depended on the preparation conditions, and the contents of Li and F tended to decrease with preparation temperature, such as Al4.69Li1.31F0.28O7.55 at 1100 °C, Al4.73Li1.27F0.17O7.65 at 1200 °C, and Al4.83Li1.17F0.10O7.78 at 1300 °C. The Rietveld analysis revealed that ALFO and LiAl5O8 were isostructural with respect to the spinel-type lattice and in a disorder-order relationship in the arrangement of Li+ and Al3+. The emission peak of Cr3+ in LiAl5O8 resided at 716 nm, while Cr3+ in ALFO showed a rather broad doublet peak with the tops at 708 nm and 716 nm when prepared at 1200 °C. The broad emission peak indicated that the local environment around Cr3+ in ALFO was distorted, which was also supported by electron spin resonance spectra, suggesting that the local environment around Cr3+ in ALFO was more inhomogeneous than expected from the diffraction-based structural analysis. It was demonstrated that even a small amount of dopant (in this case fluorine) could affect the local environment around luminescent centers, and thus the luminescence properties.

We investigated the temporal association between temporomandibular disorders (TMD)-related symptoms and headache during TMD treatment for patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for headache attributed to TMD (HATMD) specified in the Diagnostic criteria for TMD (DC/TMD) and International classification of headache disorders (ICHD)-3 beta. The study enrolled 34 patients with HATMD induced by masticatory myofascial pain but not by temporomandibular arthralgia. Facial pain intensity, the pressure pain threshold of pericranial muscles, and maximum unassisted opening of the jaw were assessed at an initial examination and before and after physical therapy. The intensity and frequency of headache episodes and tooth contact ratio were also recorded before and after the intervention. Headache intensity and frequency significantly decreased, and these reductions were temporally related to improvements in facial pain intensity, maximum unassisted opening, and pressure pain threshold during TMD treatment. Linear regression analysis showed significant correlations between facial pain intensity and headache intensity and between tooth contact ratio and pressure pain threshold. Among patients who fulfilled the DC/TMD and ICHD-3 beta diagnostic criteria for HATMD, headache improved during TMD treatment, and the improvement was temporally related to amelioration of TMD symptoms. These findings suggest that sensitization in the central and peripheral nervous systems is responsible for HATMD. (J Oral Sci 58, 195-204, 2016).

OBJECTIVES: Research suggests that varied etiologic factors are responsible for burning mouth syndrome (BMS). We examined the role of immune and endocrine function in the pathology of BMS. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study to evaluate immune (lymphocyte subpopulations) and endocrine (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic-adrenomedullary system) function in 47 female BMS patients and 47 age-matched female controls presenting at an university clinic. Psychological state was assessed with the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale and Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale. RESULTS: BMS patients were significantly more anxious than controls (P=0.011). Plasma adrenaline level was significantly lower (P=0.020) in BMS patients than in controls, and linear regression analysis of all patients combined revealed that depression level was significantly positively associated with plasma noradrenaline and cortisol levels (P=0.002 and 0.001, respectively). However, as compared with controls, BMS patients had a significantly lower CD8(+) cell count (P<0.001) and a significantly higher CD4/CD8 ratio (P=0.002). Discriminant analysis revealed that CD8(+) cell count and CD4/CD8 ratio were independent variables that distinguished BMS patients from controls. DISCUSSION: The immunoendocrine system is substantially involved, and may have a key role, in the mechanism of chronic pain in BMS patients. Immune function was significantly and specifically suppressed in BMS, although the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system were predominantly activated by psychological stress that was not specific to BMS.

The relationship between exercise capacity and left ventricular function has been evaluated in 35 patients with acute myocardial infarction (34 males and 1 female; mean age 55.5 ± 7.1 years). Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was used to measure left ventricular function in the acute phase (4.9 ± 2.2 days after onset) and the chronic phase (188.5 ± 22.9 days after onset). More than 10% left ventricular dilatation from the acute phase to the chronic phase was defined as remodeling (RM) and the subjects were divided into 2 groups: RM and non-RM. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing was performed at 1 month (1M), 3 months (3M) and 6 months (6M) after onset. In the RM group, anaerobic threshold (AT) and peak oxygen uptake (Peak ) did not change significantly. In the non-RM group, AT was 15 ± 1 (ml/min/Kg) at 1M, 16 ± 2 at 3M and 18 ± 4 at 6M. Peak was 26 ± 3 (ml/min/Kg) at 1M, 30 ± 2 at 3M and 32 ± 3 at 6M. Both parameters in the chronic phase increased significantly compared with those at 1M (p<0.002 and p<0.0001). Thus, change in exercise capacity would correlate with change in left ventricular function.
