RESUMO

Explicitly sharing individual level data in genomics studies has many merits comparing to sharing summary statistics, including more strict QCs, common statistical analyses, relative identification and improved statistical power in GWAS, but it is hampered by privacy or ethical constraints. In this study, we developed encG-reg, a regression approach that can detect relatives of various degrees based on encrypted genomic data, which is immune of ethical constraints. The encryption properties of encG-reg are based on the random matrix theory by masking the original genotypic matrix without sacrificing precision of individual-level genotype data. We established a connection between the dimension of a random matrix, which masked genotype matrices, and the required precision of a study for encrypted genotype data. encG-reg has false positive and false negative rates equivalent to sharing original individual level data, and is computationally efficient when searching relatives. We split the UK Biobank into their respective centers, and then encrypted the genotype data. We observed that the relatives estimated using encG-reg was equivalently accurate with the estimation by KING, which is a widely used software but requires original genotype data. In a more complex application, we launched a finely devised multi-center collaboration across 5 research institutes in China, covering 9 cohorts of 54,092 GWAS samples. encG-reg again identified true relatives existing across the cohorts with even different ethnic backgrounds and genotypic qualities. Our study clearly demonstrates that encrypted genomic data can be used for data sharing without loss of information or data sharing barrier.

BACKGROUND: Liver kinase B1 (LKB1) is frequently mutated in lung adenocarcinoma, and its loss contributes to tumor progression. METHODS: To identify LKB1 downstream genes that promote lung adenocarcinoma aggressiveness, we performed bioinformatical analysis using publicly available datasets. RESULTS: Rab3B was upregulated in LKB1-depleted lung adenocarcinoma cells and suppressed by LKB1 overexpression. CREB protein was enriched at the promoter of Rab3B in lung cancer cells. Silencing of CREB abrogated the upregulation of Rab3B upon LKB1 loss. Immunohistochemistry revealed the elevated expression of Rab3B in lung adenocarcinomas relative to adjacent normal tissues. Upregulation of Rab3B was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis, advanced tumor stage, and reduced overall survival in lung adenocarcinoma patients. Knockdown of Rab3B suppressed and overexpression of Rab3B promoted the proliferation, colony formation, and migration of lung adenocarcinoma cells in vitro. In a mouse xenograft model, Rab3B depletion restrained and Rab3B overexpression augmented the growth of lung adenocarcinoma tumors. Mechanistically, Rab3B interacted with DDX6 and enhanced its protein stability. Ectopic expression of DDX6 significantly promoted the proliferation, colony formation, and migration of lung adenocarcinoma cells. DDX6 knockdown phenocopied the effects of Rab3B depletion on lung adenocarcinoma cells. Additionally, DDX6 overexpression partially rescued the aggressive phenotype of Rab3B-depleted lung adenocarcinoma cells. CONCLUSION: LKB1 deficiency promotes Rab3B upregulation via a CREB-dependent manner. Rab3B interacts with and stabilizes DDX6 protein to accelerate lung adenocarcinoma progression. The Rab3B-DDX6 axis may be potential therapeutic target for lung adenocarcinoma.

High-entropy ceramics exhibit various excellent properties owing to their high configurational entropy, which is caused by multi-principal elements sharing one lattice site. The configurational entropy will further increase significantly if multi-principal elements randomly share two different lattice sites. For this purpose, pseudobrookite phase containing two cationic lattice sites (A and B sites) is selected, and corresponding high-entropy pseudobrookite (M2+ 0.4M3+ 1.2)Ti1.4O5 is synthesized. Herein, the distribution of the 2-valent and 3-valent cations in the A and B sites are analysed in depth. The distance between the A and B sites in the crystal structure models which are constructed by the Rietveld analysis is calculated and defined as distance d. Meanwhile, the atomic column positions in the STEM images are quantified by a model-based mathematical algorithm, and the corresponding distance d are calculated. By comparing the distance d, it is determine that the 2-valent and 3-valent cations are jointly and disorderly distributed in the A and B sites in high-entropy (M2+ 0.4M3+ 1.2)Ti1.4O5. The density functional theory (DFT) simulations also demonstrate that this type of crystal structure is more thermodynamically stable. The higher degree of cationic disorder leads to a higher configurational entropy in high-entropy (M2+ 0.4M3+ 1.2)Ti1.4O5, and endows high-entropy (M2+ 0.4M3+ 1.2)Ti1.4O5 with very low thermal conductivity (1.187-1.249 W m-1 K-1).

Electrocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production via two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e--ORR) features energy-saving and eco-friendly characteristics, making it a promising alternative to the anthraquinone oxidation process. However, the common existence of numerous 2e--ORR-inactive sites/species on electrocatalysts tends to catalyze side reactions, especially under low potentials, which compromises energy efficiency and limits H2O2 yield. Addressing this, a high surface density of mono-species pyrrolic nitrogen configurations is formed over a polypyrrole@carbon nanotube composite. Thermodynamic and kinetic calculation and experimental investigation collaboratively confirm that these densely distributed and highly selective active sites effectively promote high-rate 2e--ORR electrocatalysis and inhibit side reactions over a wide potential range. Consequently, an ultra-high and stable H2O2 yield of up to 67.9/51.2 mol g-1 h-1 has been achieved on this material at a current density of 200/120 mA cm-1, corresponding Faradaic efficiency of 72.8/91.5%. A maximum H2O2 concentration of 13.47 g L-1 can be accumulated at a current density of 80 mA cm-1 with satisfactory stability. The strategy of surface active site densification thus provides a promising and universal avenue toward designing highly active and efficient electrocatalysts for 2e--ORR as well as a series of other similar electrochemical processes.

Zn ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage but their practical application is plagued by inhomogeneous Zn deposition. Despite much effort, the harm of simultaneous hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) during plating to Zn deposition, has not received sufficient studies. Herein, Sn-modified Cu nanowires (Sn@CuNWs) with Sn-Cu core-shell nanostructure to achieve uniform Zn deposition by zinc affinity-HER tendency trade-off are fabricated. Confirmed by both theoretical calculation and practical characterization, the nanowires with high zinc affinity and large deposition sites facilitate Zn deposition, while the enlarged HER tendency harmful to Zn plating is inhibited by Sn nanoshell. Therefore, the Zn deposited Sn@CuNWs anode delivers a long lifespan of 800 h at 5 mA cm-2, and the full cell exhibits a high capacity of 294.4 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 and a high capacity retention of 97.8% after 2500 cycles. This work reveals the importance of HER regulation for reversible Zn deposition, which should be noticed in further research.

Zn ion batteries (ZIBs) are a promising candidate in safe and low-cost large-scale energy storage applications. However, significantly deteriorated cycling stability of Zn anode in high depth of charge or after long-term quiescence impedes the practical application of ZIBs. Aiming at the above issue, a spontaneous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation of Zn4(OH)6SO4·xH2O (ZHS) on Zn powder is achieved in pure ZnSO4 electrolyte by facile and rational interface design. The stable and ultrathin ZHS SEI plays a crucial part in insulating water molecules and conducting Zn2+ ions, intrinsically suppressing the severe hydrogen evolution and dendrite formation on the Zn powder anode. The ZHS-Zn anode delivers a stable cycling at a high DOD of 50% for over 500 h, as well as a lifespan of over 200 h after 40-days of resting at a DOD of 25%. Benefiting from the high utilization of Zn anode, the energy density of the Zn-MnxV2O5 full cell is up to 118 Wh Kg-1. This facile method can fabricate the ZHS-Zn anode as long as 1 m, revealing its feasibility in large-scale production and commercialization.

BACKGROUND: Traditional biopsies pose risks and may not accurately reflect soft tissue sarcoma (STS) heterogeneity. MRI provides a noninvasive, comprehensive alternative. PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of histological grading and prognosis in STS patients when integrating clinical-imaging parameters with deep learning (DL) features from preoperative MR images. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective/prospective. POPULATION: 354 pathologically confirmed STS patients (226 low-grade, 128 high-grade) from three hospitals and the Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA), divided into training (n = 185), external test (n = 125), and TCIA cohorts (n = 44). 12 patients (6 low-grade, 6 high-grade) were enrolled into prospective validation cohort. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 1.5 T and 3.0 T/Unenhanced T1-weighted and fat-suppressed-T2-weighted. ASSESSMENT: DL features were extracted from MR images using a parallel ResNet-18 model to construct DL signature. Clinical-imaging characteristics included age, gender, tumor-node-metastasis stage and MRI semantic features (depth, number, heterogeneity at T1WI/FS-T2WI, necrosis, and peritumoral edema). Logistic regression analysis identified significant risk factors for the clinical model. A DL clinical-imaging signature (DLCS) was constructed by incorporating DL signature with risk factors, evaluated for risk stratification, and assessed for progression-free survival (PFS) in retrospective cohorts, with an average follow-up of 23 ± 22 months. STATISTICAL TESTS: Logistic regression, Cox regression, Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank test, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC),and decision curve analysis. A P-value <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: The AUC values for DLCS in the external test, TCIA, and prospective test cohorts (0.834, 0.838, 0.819) were superior to clinical model (0.662, 0.685, 0.694). Decision curve analysis showed that the DLCS model provided greater clinical net benefit over the DL and clinical models. Also, the DLCS model was able to risk-stratify patients and assess PFS. DATA CONCLUSION: The DLCS exhibited strong capabilities in histological grading and prognosis assessment for STS patients, and may have potential to aid in the formulation of personalized treatment plans. TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

Hybridization between invasive pest species may lead to significant genetic and economic impacts that require close monitoring. The two most invasive and destructive termite species worldwide, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki and Coptotermes gestroi (Wasmann), have the potential for hybridization in the field. A three-year field survey conducted during the dispersal flight season of Coptotermes in Taiwan identified alates with atypical morphology, which were confirmed as hybrids of the two Coptotermes species using microsatellite and mitochondrial analyses. Out of 27,601 alates collected over three years, 4.4% were confirmed as hybrid alates, and some advanced hybrids (>F1 generations) were identified. The hybrid alates had a dispersal flight season that overlapped with the two parental species 13 out of 15 times. Most of the hybrid alates were females, implying that mating opportunities beyond F1 may primarily be possible through female hybrids. However, the incipient colony growth results from all potential mating combinations suggest that only backcross colonies with hybrid males could sometimes lead to brood development. The observed asymmetrical viability and fertility of hybrid alates may critically reduce the probability of advanced-hybrid colonies being established in the field.

Accurate prediction and measurement of yield stress are crucial for optimizing sludge treatment and disposal. However, the differences and applicability of various methods for measuring yield stress are subjects of ongoing debate. Meanwhile, literature on measuring sludge yield stress is limited to low solid concentrations (TS <10%), understanding and studying the yield stress of medium to high solid concentration sludge is crucial due to increasingly stringent standards for sludge treatment and disposal. So, this study employed a rotational rheometer to measure sludge yield stress across a wide range of TS (4-50%) using steady shear, dynamic oscillatory shear, and transient shear. The study derived significant conclusions by comparing and summarizing the applicability and limitations of each testing method: Dynamic oscillatory shear methods, including G'-σ curve method, γ-σ curve method, and G**γc method can measure sludge yield stress ranging from 4% to 40% TS, while other methods are restricted to low or limited solid concentrations; The G' = G″ method, utilizing the intersection of G' and G″ curves, consistently yields the highest value for yield stress when 4%≤ TS ≤ 12%; The rotational rheometer cannot measure sludge yield stress when the solid concentration exceeds 40% TS; The relationship between sludge yield stress and solid concentration is stronger as a power-law for TS ≤ 25%, transitioning to linear for higher concentrations (28%≤ TS <40%). This study systematically explores the applicability and limitations of various measurement methods for characterizing sludge yield stress across a wide range of solid concentrations, providing valuable guidance for scientific measurement and highlighting challenging research issues.

BACKGROUND: Whether programmed cell death-1/ligand-1 (PD-1/PD-L1) blockade-based neoadjuvant treatment may benefit locally advanced oncogene-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients remains controversial. This retrospective study was designed to observe the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant PD-1/PD-L1 blockade plus chemotherapy versus chemotherapy and corresponding tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in patients with resectable oncogene-positive NSCLC. METHODS: Patients with potential resectable NSCLC harbouring oncogene alterations who had received neoadjuvant treatment were retrospectively recruited, and an oncogene-negative cohort of patients who received neoadjuvant PD-(L)1 blockade-based neoadjuvant treatment was reviewed for comparison during the same period. The primary aim was to observe the treatment efficacy and event-free survival (EFS) of these agents. Safety profile, molecular target, and immunologic factor data, including PD-L1 expression and tumour mutational burden (TMB), were also obtained. RESULTS: A total of 46 patients were recruited. Thirty-one of them harboured oncogene alterations, including EGFR, KRAS, ERBB2, ROS1, MET, RET, ALK, and FGFR3 alterations. Among the oncogene-positive patients, 18 patients received neoadjuvant PD-(L)1 blockade immunotherapy plus chemotherapy (oncogene-positive IO group), 13 patients were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and/or corresponding TKIs or TKIs alone (oncogene-positive chemo/TKIs group), and the other 15 patients were oncogene negative and received neoadjuvant PD-(L)1 blockade plus chemotherapy (oncogene-negative IO group). The pathological complete response (pCR) and major pathological response (MPR) rates were 22.2% (4 of 18) and 44.4% (8 of 18) in the oncogene-positive IO group, 0% (P = 0.120) and 23.1% (3 of 13) (P = 0.276) in the oncogene-positive chemo/TKIs group, and 46.7% (7 of 15) (P = 0.163) and 80.0% (12 of 15) (P = 0.072) in the oncogene-negative IO group, respectively. By the last follow-up, the median EFS time had not reached in the oncogene-positive IO group, and was 29.5 months in the oncogene-positive chemo/TKIs group and 38.4 months in the oncogene-negative IO group. CONCLUSION: Compared with chemotherapy/TKIs treatment, neoadjuvant treatment with PD-(L)1 blockade plus platinum-based chemotherapy was associated with higher pCR/MPR rates in patients with partially resectable oncogene-mutant NSCLC, while the pCR/MPR rates were lower than their oncogene-negative counterparts treated with PD-(L)1 blockade-based treatment. Specifically, oncogene alteration types and other predictors of response to immunotherapy should be taken into account in clinical practice.

Two-dimensional (2D) carbon nitride (CN) materials have received tremendous attention as photocatalysts for clean energy and environmental treatment. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of CN is constrained by the high exciton binding energy and sluggish charge kinetics due to weak dielectric screening, impeding the overall process. Herein, localized flexo-/piezoelectric polarization is introduced via strain engineering, boosting exciton dissociation and promoting charge separation to enhance the multielectron photocatalytic process. Consequently, the exciton binding energy of polarized CN is reduced from 52 to 34 meV, and the hydrogen evolution yield increased by 2.9 times compared to that of the pristine CN. For other photocatalytic reactions (e.g., H2O2 production), the polarized CN also maintained a 2.1-fold increase compared to the pristine CN. This strategy of inducing localized polarization via strain engineering provides new insights for boosting photocatalytic reactions involving electrons.

Selective CO2 photoreduction into high-energy-density and high-value-added C2 products is an ideal strategy to achieve carbon neutrality and energy shortage, but it is still highly challenging due to the large energy barrier of the C-C coupling step and severe exciton annihilation in photocatalysts. Herein, strong and localized charge polarization is successfully induced on the surface of melon-based organic semiconductors by creating dual active sites with a large charge asymmetry. Confirmed by multiscale characterization and theoretical simulations, such asymmetric charge distribution, originated from the oxygen dopants and nitrogen vacancies over melon-based organic semiconductors, reduces exciton binding energy and boosts exciton dissociation. The as-formed charge polarization sites not only donate electrons to CO2 molecules but also accelerate the coupling of asymmetric *CO*CO intermediates for CO2 photoreduction into ethanol by lowering the energy barrier of this process. Consequently, an exceptionally high selectivity of up to 97% for C2H5OH and C2H5OH yield of 0.80 mmol g-1 h-1 have been achieved on this dual active sites organic semiconductor. This work, with its potential applicability to a variety of non-metal multi-site catalysts, represents a versatile strategy for the development of advanced catalysts tailored for CO2 photoreduction reactions.

Electrochemical synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e--ORR) provides an alternative method to the energy-intensive anthraquinone method. Metal macrocycles with precise coordination are widely used for 2e--ORR electrocatalysis, but they have to be commonly loaded on conductive substrates, thus exposing a large number of 2e--ORR-inactive sites that result in poor H2O2 production rate and efficiency. Herein, guided by first-principle predictions, a substrate-free and two-dimensional conductive metal-organic framework (Ni-TCPP(Co)), composed of CoN4 sites in porphine(Co) centers and Ni2O8 nodes, is designed as a multi-site catalyst for H2O2 electrosynthesis. The approperiate distance between the CoN4 and Ni2O8 sites in Ni-TCPP(Co) weakens the electron transfer between them, thus ensuring their inherent activities and creating high-density active sites. Meanwhile, the intrinsic electronic conductivity and porosity of Ni-TCPP(Co) further facilitate rapid reaction kinetics. Therefore, outstanding 2e--ORR electrocatalytic performance has been achieved in both alkaline and neutral electrolytes (>90 %/85 % H2O2 selectivity within 0-0.8 V vs. RHE and >18.2/18.0 mol g-1 h-1 H2O2 yield under alkaline/neutral conditions), with confirmed feasibility for water purification and disinfection applications. This strategy thus provides a new avenue for designing catalysts with precise coordination and high-density active sites, promoting high-efficiency electrosynthesis of H2O2 and beyond.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is a highly heritable complex trait and is a key indicator for diagnosis and treatment for osteoporosis. In the last decade, numerous susceptibility loci for BMD and fracture have been identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS); however, fine mapping of these loci is challengeable. Here, we proposed a new long-range fine-mapping approach that combined superenhancers (SEs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) data, which were two important factors in control of cell identity and specific differentiation, with the GWAS summary datasets in cell-type-restricted way. Genome-wide SE-based analysis found that the BMD-related variants were significantly enriched in the osteoblast SE regions, indicative of potential long-range effects of such SNPs. With the SNP-mapped SEs (mSEs), 13 accessible long-range mSE-interacted miRNAs (mSE-miRNAs) were identified by integrating osteoblast Hi-C and ATAC-seq data, including three known bone-related miRNAs (miR-132-3p, miR-212-3p and miR-125b-5p). The putative targets of the two newly identified mSE-miRNAs (miR-548aj-3p and miR-190a-3p) were found largely enriched in osteogenic-related pathway and processes, suggesting that these mSE-miRNAs could be functional in the regulation of osteoblast differentiation. Furthermore, we identified 54 genes with the long-range 'mSE-miRNA' approach, and 24 of them were previously reported to be related to skeletal development. Besides, enrichment analysis found that these genes were specifically enriched in the post-transcriptional regulation and bone formation processes. This study provided a new insight into the approach of fine-mapping of GWAS loci. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the ability of a preoperative contrast-enhanced CT (CECT)-based radiomics nomogram to differentiate benign and malignant primary retroperitoneal tumors (PRT). METHODS: Images and data from 340 patients with pathologically confirmed PRT were randomly placed into training (n = 239) and validation sets (n = 101). Two radiologists independently analyzed all CT images and made measurements. Key characteristics were identified through least absolute shrinkage selection combined with four machine-learning classifiers (support vector machine, generalized linear model, random forest, and artificial neural network back propagation) to create a radiomics signature. Demographic data and CECT characteristics were analyzed to formulate a clinico-radiological model. Independent clinical variables were merged with the best-performing radiomics signature to develop a radiomics nomogram. The discrimination capacity and clinical value of three models were quantified by the area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUC), accuracy, and decision curve analysis. RESULTS: The radiomics nomogram was able to consistently differentiate between benign and malignant PRT in the training and validation datasets, with AUCs of 0.923 and 0.907, respectively. Decision curve analysis manifested that the nomogram achieved higher clinical net benefits than did separate use of the radiomics signature and clinico-radiological model. CONCLUSIONS: The preoperative nomogram is valuable for differentiating between benign and malignant PRT; it can also aid in treatment planning. KEY POINTS: • A noninvasive and accurate preoperative determination of benign and malignant PRT is crucial to identifying suitable treatments and predicting disease prognosis. • Associating the radiomics signature with clinical factors facilitates differentiation of malignant from benign PRT with improved diagnostic efficacy (AUC) and accuracy from 0.772 to 0.907 and from 0.723 to 0.842, respectively, compared with the clinico-radiological model alone. • For some PRT with anatomically special locations and when biopsy is extremely difficult and risky, a radiomics nomogram may provide a promising preoperative alternative for distinguishing benignity and malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. And patient outcomes are poor due to tumor relapse and metastasis. To develop new therapeutic strategies, it is of great importance to explore the mechanism underlying the progression of gastric cancer. METHODS: Primary gastric cancer samples with lymph node metastases (LNM) and without LNM were subjected to mRNA microarray assay. The differentially expressed genes were confirmed by RT-qPCR. HRCT1 protein expression was further detected using an immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay. In vitro and in vivo assays were performed to investigate the role of HRCT1 in tumor invasion, metastasis, and proliferation. The expressions of the downstream target genes of HRCT1 were detected by microarray, RT-qPCR and Western blot assays. Dual-luciferase reporter and Western blot assays were carried out to identify miRNAs target to HRCT1. RESULTS: HRCT1 was upregulated in gastric cancer, and high expression of HRCT1 was associated with poor overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Moreover, HRCT1protein expression was an independent predictor for poor OS and DFS. HRCT1 could promote gastric cancer cells' migration, invasion, and proliferation in vitro as well as tumor metastasis and growth in vivo. Notably, our data showed that HRCT1 promoted gastric cancer progression by activating the ERBB2-MAPK signaling pathway. At least partially, the expression of HRCT1 could be negatively regulated by miR-124-3p. CONCLUSIONS: The upregulated expression of HRCT1 predicts poor survival for patients with gastric cancer. HRCT1 promotes tumor progression by activating the ERBB2-MAPK pathway. HRCT1, negatively regulated by miR-124-3p, may be a potential therapeutic target for patients with gastric cancer.

The level of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has been well evaluated by the particle number, while the mass concentration of MPs and especially nanoplastics (NPs) remains unclear. In this study, pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to determine the mass concentrations of MPs and NPs with different size ranges (0.01-1, 1-50, and 50-1000 µm) across the whole treatment schemes in two WWTPs. The mass concentrations of total MPs and NPs decreased from 26.23 and 11.28 µg/L in the influent to 1.75 and 0.71 µg/L in the effluent, with removal rates of 93.3 and 93.7% in plants A and B, respectively. The proportions of NPs (0.01-1 µm) were 12.0-17.9 and 5.6-19.5% in plants A and B, respectively, and the removal efficiency of NPs was lower than that of MPs (>1 µm). Based on annual wastewater effluent discharge, it is estimated that about 0.321 and 0.052 tons of MPs and NPs were released into the river each year. Overall, this study investigated the mass concentration of MPs and NPs with a wide size range of 0.01-1000 µm in wastewater, which provided valuable information regarding the pollution level and distribution characteristics of MPs, especially NPs, in WWTPs.

Stylotermitidae appear peculiar among all termites, feeding in trunks of living trees in South Asia only. The difficulty to collect them limits the ability to study them, and they thus still belong to critically unknown groups in respect to their biology. We used a combination of microscopic observations, chemical analysis and behavioural tests, to determine the source and chemical nature of the trail-following pheromone of Stylotermes faveolus from India and S. halumicus from Taiwan. The sternal gland located at the 5th abdominal segment was the exclusive source of the trail-following pheromone in both S. faveolus and S. halumicus, and it is made up of class I, II and III secretory cells. Using gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry, (3Z)-dodec-3-en-1-ol (DOE) was identified as the trail-following pheromone which elicits strong behavioural responses in workers at a threshold around 10- 4 ng/cm and 0.1 ng/gland. Our results confirm the switch from complex aldehyde trail-following pheromones occurring in the basal groups to simpler linear alcohols in the ancestor of Kalotermitidae and Neoisoptera.

The accurate determination of waster sludge water content is crucial to sludge dewatering treatment and its disposal management. Though previous studies highlight the great advantages of low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) in the determination of sludge water content, its accuracy and applicability are not well studied. Herein, this study investigated the settling of operating parameters and the properties of sludge samples on the accuracy and applicability of LF-NMR method in measuring sludge water content. The results showed that the setting of basic parameters such as standard curve, number of scanning times (NS) and sample weight affected the accuracy of sludge water content by LF-NMR. The standard calibration curve constructed by 3 g/L CuSO4, NS = 8 and the sample weight of about 5 g, were suitable for the accurate determination of sludge water content. Furthermore, the existence of magnetic substances in sludge can affect the distribution gradient of main magnetic field, and thus restricted the applicability of LF-NMR. The saturation magnetization of chemical reagents strongly correlated with the measured relative errors of sludge water content (r = 0.995, p < 0.01), the greater the saturation magnetization of the magnetic material, the greater the error of the test results. On the whole, it is necessary to fully consider the influence of process parameters and sludge properties to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of the LF-NMR method, rather than simply copying the parameters in literatures.

It is well documented that earnings inequalities have risen in many high-income countries. Less clear are the linkages between rising income inequality and workplace dynamics, how within- and between-workplace inequality varies across countries, and to what extent these inequalities are moderated by national labor market institutions. In order to describe changes in the initial between- and within-firm market income distribution we analyze administrative records for 2,000,000,000+ job years nested within 50,000,000+ workplace years for 14 high-income countries in North America, Scandinavia, Continental and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. We find that countries vary a great deal in their levels and trends in earnings inequality but that the between-workplace share of wage inequality is growing in almost all countries examined and is in no country declining. We also find that earnings inequalities and the share of between-workplace inequalities are lower and grew less strongly in countries with stronger institutional employment protections and rose faster when these labor market protections weakened. Our findings suggest that firm-level restructuring and increasing wage inequalities between workplaces are more central contributors to rising income inequality than previously recognized.
