RESUMO

We generalize the derivation of Leggett-Garg inequalities to systematically treat a larger class of experimental situations by allowing multiparticle correlations, invasive detection, and ambiguous detector results. Furthermore, we show how many such inequalities may be tested simultaneously with a single setup. As a proof of principle, we violate several such two-particle inequalities with data obtained from a polarization-entangled biphoton state and a semiweak polarization measurement based on Fresnel reflection. We also point out a nontrivial connection between specific two-party Leggett-Garg inequality violations and convex sums of strange weak values.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate a photon-counting, single-pixel, laser radar camera for 3D imaging where transverse spatial resolution is obtained through compressive sensing without scanning. We use this technique to image through partially obscuring objects, such as camouflage netting. Our implementation improves upon pixel-array based designs with a compact, resource-efficient design and highly scalable resolution.

RESUMO

We explore the association between three Alzheimer's disease-related and ten inflammation-related CSF markers and freezing of gait (FOG) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The study population includes PD patients with FOG (PD-FOG, N = 12), without FOG (PD-NoFOG, N = 19), and healthy controls (HC, N = 12). Age and PD duration are not significantly different between groups. After adjusting for covariates and multiple comparisons, the anti-inflammatory marker, fractalkine, is significantly decreased in the PD groups compared to HC (P = 0.002), and further decreased in PD-FOG compared to PD-NoFOG (P = 0.007). The Alzheimer's disease-related protein, Aß42, is increased in PD-FOG compared to PD-NoFOG and HC (P = 0.001). Group differences obtained in individual biomarker analyses are confirmed with multivariate discriminant partial least squares regression (P < 0.001). High levels of Aß42 in PD-FOG patients supports an increase over time from early to advanced state. Low levels of fractalkine might suggest anti-inflammatory effect. These findings warrant replication.

RESUMO

Myeloablative conditioning regimens for hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) are known to affect endocrine function, but little is known regarding reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens. We retrospectively reviewed 114 children and young adults after single RIC HSCT. The analysis was grouped by age (<2 and ⩾2 years) and diagnosis (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocystosis/X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (HLH/XLP), other immune disorders, metabolic/genetic disorders). All groups displayed short stature by mean height-adjusted Z-score (HAZ) before (-1.29) and after HSCT (HAZ -1.38, P=0.47). After HSCT, younger children with HLH/XLP grew better (HAZ -3.41 vs -1.65, P=0.006), whereas older subjects had decline in growth (HAZ -0.8 vs -1.01, P=0.06). Those with steroid therapy beyond standard GVHD prophylaxis were shorter than those without (P 0.04). After HSCT, older subjects with HLH/XLP became thinner with a mean body mass index (BMI) Z-score of 1.20 vs 0.64, P=0.02, and similar to metabolic/genetic disorders (BMI-Z= 0.59 vs -0.99, P<0.001). BMI increased among younger children in these same groups. Thyroid function was abnormal in 24% (18/76). 25-OH vitamin D levels were insufficient in 73% (49/65), with low bone mineral density in 8 of 19 evaluable subjects. Despite RIC, children and young adults still have significant late endocrine effects. Further research is required to compare post-transplant endocrine effects after RIC to those after standard chemotherapy protocols.

RESUMO

Caramel colours used in the manufacture of a wide variety of foods and beverages have been an item of commerce for more than one hundred years. The regulatory history of these additives in the US, the UK, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the EC is reviewed, and an introduction to the safety studies of caramel colours in this issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology is provided.

RESUMO

An overview of the chemical characterization and specifications of the four classes of caramel colour, the historical development of the four classes, and the methods of manufacture is presented. The rationale for the approach used to characterize caramel colour and the derivation of the specifications are given. Results of the characterization programme and the derived specifications are presented in subsequent papers in this issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology.

RESUMO

This report reviews the dental, medical, nursing, and public health literature concerning domestic violence prevalence, morbidity, mortality, education, and legislation. The primary goal of this report is to increase awareness of the signs of suspected domestic violence and the importance of being involved in prevention and early intervention. A second goal of this report is to increase awareness of domestic violence and to encourage the dental hygiene community to investigate methods to intervene and prevent this increasing problem. For dental hygienists, the commitment to learn and to help others should drive the initiative to address this concern for the well being of society. Due to the nature of domestic violence and our tendency to avoid involvement in the personal lives of others, this issue may be difficult for some people to encounter. It is through professional and continuing education that we strive to be better informed and equipped to venture effectively into this arena. Lastly, we are obligated to adhere to the commitment of the Dental Hygiene Code of Ethics by promoting public public health and safety for all in the community, the nation, and the world.

RESUMO

Numerous materials have been used for closure of access openings in implant-supported fixed detachable prostheses. This article describes an alternate approach to access closure by use of cast screws. Preparation of the prosthesis and fabrication of the access closure screw is described in detail.

RESUMO

Entangled photon pairs-discrete light quanta that exhibit non-classical correlations-play a crucial role in quantum information science (for example, in demonstrations of quantum non-locality, quantum teleportation and quantum cryptography). At the macroscopic optical-field level non-classical correlations can also be important, as in the case of squeezed light, entangled light beams and teleportation of continuous quantum variables. Here we use stimulated parametric down-conversion to study entangled states of light that bridge the gap between discrete and macroscopic optical quantum correlations. We demonstrate experimentally the onset of laser-like action for entangled photons, through the creation and amplification of the spin-1/2 and spin-1 singlet states consisting of two and four photons, respectively. This entanglement structure holds great promise in quantum information science where there is a strong demand for entangled states of increasing complexity.

RESUMO

One hundred sixteen children, including 50 less than 10 years of age, received isoniazid therapy for tuberculous infection. Determinations of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase concentrations at time of institution of therapy, 6 to 20 weeks later, and again at the completion of the therapeutic course, showed no evidence of hepatotoxicity. Clinical symptoms were never such that discontinuation of therapy was necessary.
