RESUMO

In recent years, nanomaterials exploration and synthesis have played a crucial role in advancing energy storage research, particularly in supercapacitor development. Researchers have diversified materials, including metal oxides, chalcogenides, and composites, as well as carbon materials, to enhance energy and power density. Balancing energy density with electrochemical stability remains challenging, driving intensified efforts in advancing electrode materials. This review focuses on recent progress in designing and synthesizing core-shell materials tailored for supercapacitors. The core-shell architecture offers advantages such as increased surface area, redox active sites, electrical conductivity, ion diffusion kinetics, specific capacitance, and cyclability. The review explores the impact of core and shell materials, specifically transition metal oxides (TMOs), on supercapacitor electrochemical behavior. Metal oxide choices, such as cobalt oxide as a preferred core and manganese oxide as a shell, are discussed. The review also highlights characterization techniques for assessing structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of core-shell materials. Overall, it provides a comprehensive overview of ongoing TMOs-based core-shell material research for supercapacitors, showcasing their potential to enhance energy storage for applications ranging from gadgets to electric vehicles. The review outlines existing challenges and future opportunities in evolving TMOs-based core-shell materials for supercapacitor advancements, holding promise for high-efficiency energy storage devices.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: We evaluated the prevalence and characteristics of isolated nighttime masked uncontrolled hypertension (IN-MUCH) in treated patients. Materials and Methods: Participants aged 20 years or older who were on antihypertensive medication underwent three-day office blood pressure (BP) and 24 h ambulatory BP measurements. Hypertension phenotypes were classified as controlled hypertension (CH), isolated daytime masked uncontrolled hypertension (ID-MUCH), IN-MUCH, and daytime and nighttime masked uncontrolled hypertension (DN-MUCH). Results: Among 701 participants, 544 had valid BP data and controlled office BP (<140/90 mmHg). The prevalence of IN-MUCH was 34.9%, with a higher prevalence of men and drinkers than in those with CH. Patients with IN-MUCH had higher office systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) than those with CH. The prevalence of IN-MUCH was 37.6%, 38.5%, and 27.9% in patients with optimal, normal, and high-normal office BP levels, respectively. Among IN-MUCH patients, 51.6% exhibited isolated uncontrolled DBP and 41.1% uncontrolled SBP and DBP. Younger age (p = 0.043), male sex (p = 0.033), and alcohol consumption (p = 0.011) were more prevalent in patients with isolated uncontrolled DBP than in those with uncontrolled SBP and DBP. Age and alcohol consumption were positively associated, whereas high-normal office BP exhibited a negative association with IN-MUCH. Conclusions: The IN-MUCH was significantly more prevalent in patients with normal or optimal office BP, posing treatment challenges. Further investigation is needed to determine whether differentiation between isolated uncontrolled DBP and combined uncontrolled SBP and DBP is necessary for prognostic assessment of IN-MUCH.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate antiproliferative sirolimus- and antioxidative alpha-lipoic acid (ALA)-eluting stents using biodegradable polymer [poly-L-lactic acid (PLA)] in a porcine coronary overstretch restenosis model. Forty coronary arteries of 20 pigs were randomized into four groups in which the coronary arteries had a bare metal stent (BMS, n = 10), ALA-eluting stent with PLA (AES, n = 10), sirolimus-eluting stent with PLA (SES, n = 10), or sirolimus- and ALA-eluting stent with PLA (SAS, n = 10). A histopathological analysis was performed 28 days after the stenting. The ALA and sirolimus released slowly over 30 days. There were no significant differences between groups in the injury or inflammation score; however, there were significant differences in the percent area of stenosis (56.2 ± 11.78% in BMS vs. 51.5 ± 12.20% in AES vs. 34.7 ± 7.23% in SES vs. 28.7 ± 7.30% in SAS, P < 0.0001) and fibrin score [1.0 (range 1.0-1.0) in BMS vs. 1.0 (range 1.0-1.0) in AES vs. 2.0 (range 2.0-2.0) in SES vs. 2.0 (range 2.0-2.0) in SAS, P < 0.0001] between the four groups. The percent area of stenosis based on micro-computed tomography corresponded with the restenosis rates based on histopathological stenosis in different proportions in the four groups (54.8 ± 7.88% in BMS vs. 50.4 ± 14.87% in AES vs. 34.5 ± 7.22% in SES vs. 28.9 ± 7.22% in SAS, P < 0.05). SAS showed a better neointimal inhibitory effect than BMS, AES, and SES at 1 month after stenting in a porcine coronary restenosis model. Therefore, SAS with PLA can be a useful drug combination for coronary stent coating to suppress neointimal hyperplasia.

RESUMO

The coupling of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with photoanodes is a promising strategy for enhancing the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance by passivating photoanode's surface defect states and facilitating charge transfer at the photoanode/electrolyte interface. However, a serious interface recombination issue caused by poor interface and OER catalysts coating quality often limits further performance improvement of photoanodes. Herein, a rapid Fenton-like reaction method is demonstrated to produce ultrathin amorphous Ni:FeOOH catalysts with in situ-induced oxygen vacancies (Vo) to improve the water oxidation activity and stability of BiVO4 photoanodes. The combined physical characterizations, PEC studies, and density functional theory calculations revealed that the reductive environment in a Fenton-like reaction in situ produces abundant Vo in Ni:FeOOH catalysts, which significantly improves charge separation and charge transfer efficiency of BiVO4 while also offering abundant active sites and a reduced energy barrier for OER. As a result, Ni:FeOOH-Vo catalysts yielded a more than 2-fold increased photocurrent density in the BiVO4 photoanode (from 1.54 to 4.15 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE), accompanied by high stability for 5 h. This work not only highlights the significance of abundant Vo in catalysts but also provides new insights into the rational design and fabrication of efficient and stable solar water-splitting systems.

RESUMO

Earthquakes are natural disasters that cause damage in a wide range of regions and represent a complex system that does not have a clear causal relationship with specific observable factors. This research analyzes the earthquake activities on the Korean Peninsula with respect to spatial and temporal factors. Using logarithmic regression analysis, we showed that the relationship between the location of the earthquake and its frequency in these locations follows a power law distribution. In addition, we showed that since 1998 the average earthquake magnitude has decreased from 3.0143 to 2.5433 and the frequency has risen by 3.98 times. Finally, the spatial analysis revealed significantly concentrated earthquake activities in a few particular areas and showed that earthquake occurrence points have shifted southeast. This research showed the change in earthquake dynamics and concentration of earthquake activities in particular regions over time. This finding implies the necessity of further research on spatially-derived earthquake policies on the change of earthquake dynamics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Artemisinin and dihydroartemisinin are drugs used to treat malaria. These drugs suppress inflammatory reactions. The aim of this study was to examine the anti-intima hyperplasia effect of a novel drug-eluting stent with artemisinin or dihydroartemisinin in a porcine coronary restenosis model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pigs were randomized into four groups; in the first, the coronary arteries (20 pigs, a total of 40 coronary arteries, with 10 coronary arteries in each group) was implanted with bare metal stents (BMS, n=10); the second group was given polymer-coated stents (PCS, n=10); the third group was treated with artemisinin-eluting stents (AES, n=10); and the fourth group was given dihydroartemisinin-eluting stents (DAES, n=10). Histopathologic analysis was performed 28 days after stenting. RESULTS: The injury and fibrin scores among the four groups were not significantly different. However, the internal elastic lamina, lumen area, and neointima area were significantly different. Moreover, the percent area of stenosis (46.2±18.66% in BMS vs. 89.4±10.92% in PCS vs. 83.3±17.07% in AES vs. 36.7±11.20% in DAES, p<0.0001) and inflammation score (1.0 [range: 1.0-1.0] vs. 3.0 [range: 2.25-3.0] vs. 3.0 [range: 1.0-3.0] vs. 2.0 [range: 1.75-3.0] in BMS, PCS, AES, and DAES, respectively; p<0.001) were markedly decreased in the DAES group compared to the PCS group. CONCLUSION: DES, which uses a natural substance, dihydroartemisinin, showed a neointima and inflammatory suppressive effect in a porcine coronary restenosis model.

RESUMO

Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystem vascular inflammatory disease. BD can affect blood vessels of nearly all sizes and types. Arterial involvement is a rare but serious condition in the course of BD. Here, we report a case of stenosis at the iliac artery bifurcation which was treated with percutaneous balloon angioplasty and stent implantation in a 37-year-old patient with BD.
