RESUMO

In this study, the authors examined cancer family caregivers' life experience and the meaning of leisure, focusing on their difficulties and the role of leisure. We found four main themes related to cancer family caregivers' life and leisure experiences: stressors, adapting, the need of leisure, and leisure experiences. Our results showed that the caregivers experienced high levels of psychological and physical stress and conflicts while caring for cancer patients, resulting in a poor quality of life. They believed that leisure activity is necessary and can improve their quality of life; however, they felt a sense of guilt while engaging in personal activities.

Hypertension is a high-risk symptom in atherosclerotic patients, and vascular rigidity is one of the main factors leading to hypertension. ß1-Subunit of BKCa channel (KCNMB1; MaxiKß1) has been reported as a modulator of vascular flexibility. To determine the relationship between atherosclerosis and KCNMB1, we studied some atherogenic factors affecting vascular tone. Blood of atherosclerotic patients shows increased concentration of 7-ketocholesterol (7K), which has been studied as a harmful lipid to blood vessels. Our data showed that KCNMB1 was significantly down-regulated in the presence of 7K, in a dose-/time-dependent manner in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). And, the reduction of KCNMB1 was confirmed in cell images of 7K-stimulated VSMCs and in vessel tissue images of ApoE knock-out mice. To determine whether aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) was involved in the reduction of KCNMB1 by 7K-stimulation, protein level of AhR was analyzed by Western blot. Our data showed that the reduction of KCNMB1 was modulated through the AhR pathway. In conclusion, results of our study suggest that 7K induces the reduction of KCNMB1 through the AhR pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Proper exercise immediately after breast cancer surgery (BCS) may prevent unnecessary physical and psychological decline resulting from the surgery; however, patients' attitude, barriers and facilitators for exercise during this period have not been studied. Hence, this study aims to explore the barriers and facilitators of exercise among patients with breast cancer through multiple interviews immediately after surgery through 4 weeks after BCS. METHODS: We conducted three in-depth interviews of 33 patients with breast cancer within 1 month after BCS. RESULTS: We identified 44 themes, 10 codes and 5 categories from interview results. Physical constraints and psychological resistance were identified as the barriers to exercise, while a sense of purpose and first-hand exercise experience were identified as the facilitators of exercise. By conducting the interviews over the course of 4 weeks after surgery, we monitored patterns of changes in barriers and facilitators over time. Overall, our analyses identified that professional intervention based on the time since surgery and the physical state after BCS is essential. The intervention would counteract the overwhelming psychological resistance in the early weeks by developing a sense of purpose in the later weeks. CONCLUSIONS: We made suggestions for future research and exercise intervention programmes that can benefit breast cancer survivors based on the categories, codes and themes identified in this study.

We report a hexagonal GaN nanorod-based two-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) slab for phosphor-conversion white light emitting devices analyzed by three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulation; this slab has a broad reflection band at yellow wavelength with low Fabry-Pérot background at normal incidence. For practical use as a wavelength-selective reflector, a buffer layer under the PhC slab is employed to sustain the nanorods in the PhC slab. However, we observed that the buffer layer placed below the slab destroys the broad reflection band due to evanescent coupling of electromagnetic field in the slab and the buffer layer. By introducing small-sized base pillars between the slab and the buffer layer, we could decouple the interaction between the slab and the buffer layer and maintain the broad reflection band without any unexpected dips. Since this GaN nanorod-based PhC slab is designed for practical light emitting devices by considering dielectric and transparent conducting layers, this structure is directly applicable for developing hybrid white light emitting devices having both an (active) blue-color-emitting nanorod emitters and a (passive) normal reflector of phosphor emission.

Group III-nitride semiconductor-based ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes have been suggested as a substitute for conventional arc-lamps such as mercury, xenon and deuterium arc-lamps, since they are compact, efficient and have a long lifetime. However, in previously reported studies, group III-nitride UV light emitting diodes did not show a broad UV spectrum range as conventional arc-lamps, which restricts their application in fields such as medical therapy and UV spectrophotometry. Here, we propose GaN quantum dots (QDs) grown on different facets of hexagonal truncated pyramid structures formed on a conventional (0001) sapphire substrate. A hexagonal truncated GaN pyramid structure includes {101̄1} semipolar facets as well as a (0001) polar facet, which have intrinsically different piezoelectric fields and growth rates of GaN QDs. Consequently, we successfully demonstrated a plateau-like broadband UV spectrum ranging from ∼400 nm (UV-A) to ∼270 nm (UV-C) from the GaN QDs. In addition, at the top-edge of the truncated pyramid structure, a strain was locally suppressed compared to the center of the truncated pyramid structure. As a result, various emission wavelengths in the UV range were achieved from the GaN QDs grown on the sidewall, top-edge and top-center of hexagonal truncated pyramid structures, which ultimately provide a broadband UV spectrum with high efficiency.

The influence of thermal annealing on the properties of germanium grown on silicon (Ge-on-Si) has been investigated. Depth dependencies of strain and photoluminescence (PL) were compared for as-grown and annealed Ge-on-Si samples to investigate how intermixing affects the optical properties of Ge-on-Si. The tensile strain on thermally annealed Ge-on-Si increases at the deeper region, while the PL wavelength becomes shorter. This unexpected blue-shift is attributed to Si interdiffusion at the interface, which is confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and micro-Raman experiments. Not only Γ- and L-valley emissions but also Δ2-valley related emission could be found from the PL spectra, showing a possibility of carrier escape from Γ valley. Temperature-dependent PL analysis reveals that the thermal activation energy of Γ-valley emission increases at the proximity of the Ge/Si interface. By comparing the PL peak energies and their activation energies, both SiGe intermixing and shallow defect levels are found to be responsible for the activation energy increase and consequent efficiency reduction at the Ge/Si interface. These results provide an in-depth understanding of the influence of strain and Si intermixing on the direct-bandgap optical transition in thermally annealed Ge-on-Si.

We have investigated the thermally induced tensile strain in Ge-on-Si for use in optical sources of interconnection systems. Epitaxial Ge layers were grown using a two-step hetero-epitaxy at low and high temperatures. The as-grown Ge-on-Si was then annealed for direct bandgap conversion. A tensile strain of 0.06% in the as-grown Ge increased to 0.31% after annealing at 850 degrees C. As the thermal budget of this post-growth anneal was increased, the tensile strain of relaxed Ge-on-Si also increases and a Si-Ge alloy forms. Physical characterization indicates a tunable tensile stain in Ge-on-Si can be realized using post-growth annealing, which will allow for a wide range of frequencies in optical interconnections.

RESUMO

Direct integration of semiconductor photonic nanocavities with paper substrates is demonstrated for the first time. 1D photonic crystal nanocavities successfully show lasing action on paper substrates. The device has great synergy as a sensor because paper has good wicking ability while a photonic crystal cavity has high figure of merit. The research provides a platform for eco-friendly and sustainable devices.

In this study, we found that the total polyphenol and ascorbic acid levels in the fruit of Opuntia humifusa are higher than those in other parts of the plant. We further hypothesized that antioxidants in O. humifusa might affect the growth or survival of cancer cells. Hexane extracts of seeds and ethyl acetate extracts of fruits and stems significantly suppressed the proliferation of HeLa cervical carcinoma cells, but did not affect the proliferation of normal human BJ fibroblasts. Additionally, the extracts of O. humifusa induced G1 phase arrest in HeLa cells. The O. humifusa extracts reduced the levels of G1 phase-associated cyclin D1, cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (Cdk4), and phosphorylated retinoblastoma proteins. Moreover, p21(WAF1/Cip1) and p53 expression significantly increased after treatment. We examined the effects of ethyl acetate extracts of O. humifusa fruit (OHF) on HeLa cells xenograft tumor growth. OHF treatment significantly reduced tumor volume and this decrease was correlated with decreased Cdk4 and cyclin D1 expression. Furthermore, flavonoids, trans Taxifolin, and dihydrokaempferol, were isolated from OHF. Thus, this extract may be a promising candidate for treating human cervical carcinoma.

The acute and subacute hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic effects of drinkable ripe onion juice (Commercial product name is "Black Onion Extract") were investigated in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. For tests of acute and subacute hypoglycemic effects, ripe onion juice (5 and 15 mL/kg b.w.) was administered by oral gavage to normal Sprague Dawley rats and measurements of fasting glucose levels and oral glucose tolerance tests were performed. Tolbutamide was used as a reference drug at a single oral dose of 250 mg/kg b.w. To test anti-hyper-glycemic activity, the ripe onion juice was administered to streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats by oral gavage at single dose of 15 mL/kg b.w. per day for 7 consecutive days. Oral administration of the ripe onion juice at either dosed level of 5 or 15 mL/kg b.w. showed no remarkable acute hypoglycemic effect in normal rats. The two dosed levels caused a relatively small reduction, only 18% and 12% (5 and 15 mL/kg b.w., respectively) decrease in glucose levels at 2 h after glucose loading in normal rats. However, at 3 h after glucose loading, blood glucose levels in the ripe onion juice-dosed rats were decreased to the corresponding blood glucose level in tolbutamide-dosed rats. Although showing weak hypoglycemic potential compared to that of tolbutamide, oral administration of ripe onion juice (15 mL/kg b.w.) for a short period (8 days) resulted in a slight reduction in the blood glucose levels that had elevated in Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. In conclusion, these results suggest that the commercial product "Black Onion Extract" may possess anti-hyperglycemic potential in diabetes.
