RESUMO

Methods for selective covalent modification of amino acids on proteins can enable a diverse array of applications, spanning probes and modulators of protein function to proteomics1-3. Owing to their high nucleophilicity, cysteine and lysine residues are the most common points of attachment for protein bioconjugation chemistry through acid-base reactivity3,4. Here we report a redox-based strategy for bioconjugation of tryptophan, the rarest amino acid, using oxaziridine reagents that mimic oxidative cyclization reactions in indole-based alkaloid biosynthetic pathways to achieve highly efficient and specific tryptophan labelling. We establish the broad use of this method, termed tryptophan chemical ligation by cyclization (Trp-CLiC), for selectively appending payloads to tryptophan residues on peptides and proteins with reaction rates that rival traditional click reactions and enabling global profiling of hyper-reactive tryptophan sites across whole proteomes. Notably, these reagents reveal a systematic map of tryptophan residues that participate in cation-π interactions, including functional sites that can regulate protein-mediated phase-separation processes.

Citrulline can be converted into argininosuccinate by argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS1) in the urea cycle and the citrulline-nitric oxide cycle. However, the regulation and biological function of citrulline metabolism remain obscure in the immune system. Unexpectedly, we found that macrophage citrulline declines rapidly after interferon gamma (IFN-γ) and/or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, which is required for efficient proinflammatory signaling activation. Mechanistically, IFN-γ and/or LPS stimulation promotes signal transducers and activators of transcription 1 (STAT1)-mediated ASS1 transcription and Janus kinase2 (JAK2)-mediated phosphorylation of ASS1 at tyrosine 87, thereby leading to citrulline depletion. Reciprocally, increased citrulline directly binds to JAK2 and inhibits JAK2-STAT1 signaling. Blockage of ASS1-mediated citrulline depletion suppresses the host defense against bacterial infection in vivo. We therefore define a central role for ASS1 in controlling inflammatory macrophage activation and antibacterial defense through depletion of cellular citrulline and, further, identify citrulline as an innate immune-signaling metabolite that engages a metabolic checkpoint for proinflammatory responses.

Benefiting from high energy density (2,600 Wh kg-1) and low cost, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered promising candidates for advanced energy-storage systems1-4. Despite tremendous efforts in suppressing the long-standing shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides5-7, understanding of the interfacial reactions of lithium polysulfides at the nanoscale remains elusive. This is mainly because of the limitations of in situ characterization tools in tracing the liquid-solid conversion of unstable lithium polysulfides at high temporal-spatial resolution8-10. There is an urgent need to understand the coupled phenomena inside Li-S batteries, specifically, the dynamic distribution, aggregation, deposition and dissolution of lithium polysulfides. Here, by using in situ liquid-cell electrochemical transmission electron microscopy, we directly visualized the transformation of lithium polysulfides over electrode surfaces at the atomic scale. Notably, an unexpected gathering-induced collective charge transfer of lithium polysulfides was captured on the nanocluster active-centre-immobilized surface. It further induced an instantaneous deposition of nonequilibrium Li2S nanocrystals from the dense liquid phase of lithium polysulfides. Without mediation of active centres, the reactions followed a classical single-molecule pathway, lithium polysulfides transforming into Li2S2 and Li2S step by step. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that the long-range electrostatic interaction between active centres and lithium polysulfides promoted the formation of a dense phase consisting of Li+ and Sn2- (2 < n ≤ 6), and the collective charge transfer in the dense phase was further verified by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The collective interfacial reaction pathway unveils a new transformation mechanism and deepens the fundamental understanding of Li-S batteries.

This paper is concerned with the problem of reconstructing an unknown rank-one matrix with prior structural information from noisy observations. While computing the Bayes optimal estimator is intractable in general due to the requirement of computing high-dimensional integrations/summations, Approximate Message Passing (AMP) emerges as an efficient first-order method to approximate the Bayes optimal estimator. However, the theoretical underpinnings of AMP remain largely unavailable when it starts from random initialization, a scheme of critical practical utility. Focusing on a prototypical model called [Formula: see text] synchronization, we characterize the finite-sample dynamics of AMP from random initialization, uncovering its rapid global convergence. Our theory-which is nonasymptotic in nature-in this model unveils the non-necessity of a careful initialization for the success of AMP.

Gaussian graphical models are widely used to study the dependence structure among variables. When samples are obtained from multiple conditions or populations, joint analysis of multiple graphical models are desired due to their capacity to borrow strength across populations. Nonetheless, existing methods often overlook the varying levels of similarity between populations, leading to unsatisfactory results. Moreover, in many applications, learning the population-level clustering structure itself is of particular interest. In this article, we develop a novel method, called Simultaneous Clustering and Estimation of Networks via Tensor decomposition (SCENT), that simultaneously clusters and estimates graphical models from multiple populations. Precision matrices from different populations are uniquely organized as a three-way tensor array, and a low-rank sparse model is proposed for joint population clustering and network estimation. We develop a penalized likelihood method and an augmented Lagrangian algorithm for model fitting. We also establish the clustering accuracy and norm consistency of the estimated precision matrices. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method with comprehensive simulation studies. The application to the Genotype-Tissue Expression multi-tissue gene expression data provides important insights into tissue clustering and gene coexpression patterns in multiple brain tissues.

MOTIVATION: Microbiome data analysis faces the challenge of sparsity, with many entries recorded as zeros. In differential abundance analysis, the presence of excessive zeros in data violates distributional assumptions and creates ties, leading to an increased risk of type I errors and reduced statistical power. RESULTS: We developed a novel normalization method, called censoring-based analysis of microbiome proportions (CAMP), for microbiome data by treating zeros as censored observations, transforming raw read counts into tie-free time-to-event-like data. This enables the use of survival analysis techniques, like the Cox proportional hazards model, for differential abundance analysis. Extensive simulations demonstrate that CAMP achieves proper type I error control and high power. Applying CAMP to a human gut microbiome dataset, we identify 60 new differentially abundant taxa across geographic locations, showcasing its usefulness. CAMP overcomes sparsity challenges, enabling improved statistical analysis and providing valuable insights into microbiome data in various contexts. Although the cerebellum contributes to higher-order cognitive and emotional functions relevant to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prior research on cerebellar volume in PTSD is scant, particularly when considering subregions that differentially map on to motor, cognitive, and affective functions. In a sample of 4215 adults (PTSD n = 1642; Control n = 2573) across 40 sites from the ENIGMA-PGC PTSD working group, we employed a new state-of-the-art deep-learning based approach for automatic cerebellar parcellation to obtain volumetric estimates for the total cerebellum and 28 subregions. Linear mixed effects models controlling for age, gender, intracranial volume, and site were used to compare cerebellum volumes in PTSD compared to healthy controls (88% trauma-exposed). PTSD was associated with significant grey and white matter reductions of the cerebellum. Compared to controls, people with PTSD demonstrated smaller total cerebellum volume, as well as reduced volume in subregions primarily within the posterior lobe (lobule VIIB, crus II), vermis (VI, VIII), flocculonodular lobe (lobule X), and corpus medullare (all p-FDR < 0.05). Effects of PTSD on volume were consistent, and generally more robust, when examining symptom severity rather than diagnostic status. These findings implicate regionally specific cerebellar volumetric differences in the pathophysiology of PTSD. The cerebellum appears to play an important role in higher-order cognitive and emotional processes, far beyond its historical association with vestibulomotor function. Further examination of the cerebellum in trauma-related psychopathology will help to clarify how cerebellar structure and function may disrupt cognitive and affective processes at the center of translational models for PTSD.

In embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), the expression of an RNA-binding pluripotency-relevant protein, LIN28, and the absence of its antagonist, the tumor-suppressor microRNA (miRNA) let-7, play a key role in maintaining pluripotency. Muse cells are non-tumorigenic pluripotent-like stem cells residing in the bone marrow, peripheral blood, and organ connective tissues as pluripotent surface marker SSEA-3(+). They express pluripotency genes, differentiate into triploblastic-lineage cells, and self-renew at the single cell level. Muse cells do not express LIN28 but do express let-7 at higher levels than in iPSCs. In Muse cells, we demonstrated that let-7 inhibited the PI3K-AKT pathway, leading to sustainable expression of the key pluripotency regulator KLF4 as well as its downstream genes, POU5F1, SOX2, and NANOG. Let-7 also suppressed proliferation and glycolysis by inhibiting the PI3K-AKT pathway, suggesting its involvement in non-tumorigenicity. Furthermore, the MEK/ERK pathway is not controlled by let-7 and may have a pivotal role in maintaining self-renewal and suppression of senescence. The system found in Muse cells, in which the tumor suppressor let-7, but not LIN28, tunes the expression of pluripotency genes, might be a rational cell system conferring both pluripotency-like properties and a low risk for tumorigenicity.

Rationale: The airway microbiome has the potential to shape chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) pathogenesis, but its relationship to outcomes in milder disease is unestablished. Objectives: To identify sputum microbiome characteristics associated with markers of COPD in participants of the Subpopulations and Intermediate Outcome Measures of COPD Study (SPIROMICS). Methods: Sputum DNA from 877 participants was analyzed using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Relationships between baseline airway microbiota composition and clinical, radiographic, and mucoinflammatory markers, including longitudinal lung function trajectory, were examined. Measurements and Main Results: Participant data represented predominantly milder disease (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease stage 0-2 obstruction in 732 of 877 participants). Phylogenetic diversity (i.e., range of different species within a sample) correlated positively with baseline lung function, decreased with higher Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease stage, and correlated negatively with symptom burden, radiographic markers of airway disease, and total mucin concentrations (P < 0.001). In covariate-adjusted regression models, organisms robustly associated with better lung function included Alloprevotella, Oribacterium, and Veillonella species. Conversely, lower lung function, greater symptoms, and radiographic measures of small airway disease were associated with enrichment in members of Streptococcus, Actinobacillus, Actinomyces, and other genera. Baseline sputum microbiota features were also associated with lung function trajectory during SPIROMICS follow-up (stable/improved, decline, or rapid decline groups). The stable/improved group (slope of FEV1 regression ⩾66th percentile) had greater bacterial diversity at baseline associated with enrichment in Prevotella, Leptotrichia, and Neisseria species. In contrast, the rapid decline group (FEV1 slope ⩽33rd percentile) had significantly lower baseline diversity associated with enrichment in Streptococcus species. Conclusions: In SPIROMICS, baseline airway microbiota features demonstrate divergent associations with better or worse COPD-related outcomes.

Refractory carbides are attractive candidates for support materials in heterogeneous catalysis because of their high thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability. However, the industrial applications of refractory carbides, especially silicon carbide (SiC), are greatly hampered by their low surface area and harsh synthetic conditions, typically have a very limited surface area (<200 m2 g-1), and are prepared in a high-temperature environment (>1,400 °C) that lasts for several or even tens of hours. Based on Le Chatelier's principle, we theoretically proposed and experimentally verified that a low-pressure carbothermal reduction (CR) strategy was capable of synthesizing high-surface area SiC (569.9 m2 g-1) at a lower temperature and a faster rate (∼1,300 °C, 50 Pa, 30 s). Such high-surface area SiC possesses excellent thermal stability and antioxidant capacity since it maintained stability under a water-saturated airflow at 650 °C for 100 h. Furthermore, we demonstrated the feasibility of our strategy for scale-up production of high-surface area SiC (460.6 m2 g-1), with a yield larger than 12 g in one experiment, by virtue of an industrial viable vacuum sintering furnace. Importantly, our strategy is  also applicable to the rapid synthesis of refractory metal carbides (NbC, Mo2C, TaC, WC) and even their emerging high-entropy carbides (VNbMoTaWC5, TiVNbTaWC5). Therefore, our low-pressure CR method provides an alternative strategy, not merely limited to temperature and time items, to regulate the synthesis and facilitate the upcoming industrial applications of carbide-based advanced functional materials.

BACKGROUND: Tai Chi has shown beneficial effects on the motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), but no study has reported the effect of long-term Tai Chi training. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether long-term Tai Chi training can maintain improvement in patients with PD. METHODS: Cohorts of patients with PD with Tai Chi training (n=143) and patients with PD without exercise as a control group (n=187) were built from January 2016. All subjects were assessed at baseline and in November 2019, October 2020 and June 2021. A logarithmic linear model was used to analyse rating scales for motor and non-motor symptoms. The need to increase antiparkinsonian therapies was presented as a Kaplan-Meier plot and as a box plot. The bootstrap method was used to resample for statistical estimation. RESULTS: Tai Chi training reduced the annual changes in the deterioration of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale and delayed the need for increasing antiparkinsonian therapies. The annual increase in the levodopa equivalent daily dosage was significantly lower in the Tai Chi group. Moreover, patients benefited from Tai Chi training in motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms and complications. CONCLUSION: Tai Chi training has a long-term beneficial effect on PD, with an improvement in motor and non-motor symptoms and reduced complications. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT05447975.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a relatively prevalent primary tumor of the central nervous system in children, characterized by its high malignancy and mortality rates, along with the intricate challenges of achieving complete surgical resection. Recently, an increasing number of studies have focused on the crucial role of super-enhancers (SEs) in the occurrence and development of GBM. This study embarks on the task of evaluating the effectiveness of MZ1, an inhibitor of BRD4 meticulously designed to specifically target SEs, within the intricate framework of GBM. METHODS: The clinical data of GBM patients was sourced from the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) and the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis 2 (GEPIA2), and the gene expression data of tumor cell lines was derived from the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE). The impact of MZ1 on GBM was assessed through CCK-8, colony formation assays, EdU incorporation analysis, flow cytometry, and xenograft mouse models. The underlying mechanism was investigated through RNA-seq and ChIP-seq analyses. RESULTS: In this investigation, we made a noteworthy observation that MZ1 exhibited a substantial reduction in the proliferation of GBM cells by effectively degrading BRD4. Additionally, MZ1 displayed a notable capability in inducing significant cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in GBM cells. These findings were in line with our in vitro outcomes. Notably, MZ1 administration resulted in a remarkable decrease in tumor size within the xenograft model with diminished toxicity. Furthermore, on a mechanistic level, the administration of MZ1 resulted in a significant suppression of pivotal genes closely associated with cell cycle regulation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Interestingly, our analysis of RNA-seq and ChIP-seq data unveiled the discovery of a novel prospective oncogene, SDC1, which assumed a pivotal role in the tumorigenesis and progression of GBM. CONCLUSION: In summary, our findings revealed that MZ1 effectively disrupted the aberrant transcriptional regulation of oncogenes in GBM by degradation of BRD4. This positions MZ1 as a promising candidate in the realm of therapeutic options for GBM treatment.

The continual exposure of retinal tissues to oxidative stress leads to discernible anatomical and physiological alterations. Specifically, the onslaught of oxidative damage escalates the irreversible death of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) cells, pinpointed as the fundamental pathological event in dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). There is a conspicuous lack of effective therapeutic strategies to counteract this degenerative process. This study screened a library of antioxidants for their ability to protect RPE cells against oxidative stress and identified L-ergothioneine (EGT) as a potent cytoprotective agent. L-ergothioneine provided efficient protection against oxidative stress-damaged RPE and maintained cell redox homeostasis and normal physiological functions. It maintained the normal structure of the retina in mice under oxidative stress conditions. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that EGT counteracted major gene expression changes induced by oxidative stress. It upregulated antioxidant gene expression and inhibited NRF2 translocation. The inhibition of NRF2 abolished EGT's protective effects, suggesting that NRF2 activation contributes to its mechanism of action. In conclusion, we identified EGT as a safe and effective small-molecule compound that is expected to be a novel antioxidative agent for treating AMD.

BACKGROUND: Insular low-grade gliomas (LGGs) are surgically challenging due to their proximity to critical structures like the corticospinal tract (CST). PURPOSE: This study aims to determine if preoperative CST shape metrics correlate with postoperative motor complications in insular LGG patients. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: 42 patients (mean age 40.26 ± 10.21 years, 25 male) with insular LGGs. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Imaging was performed using 3.0 Tesla MRI, incorporating T1-weighted magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo, T2-weighted space dark-fluid with spin echo (SE), and diffusional kurtosis imaging (DKI) with gradient echo sequences, all integrated with echo planar imaging. ASSESSMENT: Shape metrics of the CST, including span, irregularity, radius, and irregularity of end regions (RER and IER, respectively), were compared between the affected and healthy hemispheres. Total end region radius (TRER) was determined as the sum of RER 1 and RER 2. The relationships between shape metrics and postoperative short-term (4 weeks) and long-term (>8 weeks) motor disturbances assessing by British Medical Research Council grading system, was analyzed using multivariable regression models. STATISTICAL TESTING: Paired t-tests compared CST metrics between hemispheres. Logistic regression identified associations between these metrics and motor disturbances. The models were developed using all available data and there was no independent validation dataset. Significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Short-term motor disturbance risk was significantly related to TRER (OR = 199.57). Long-term risk significantly correlated with IER 1 (OR = 59.84), confirmed as a significant marker with an AUC of 0.78. Furthermore, the CST on the affected side significantly had the greater irregularity, larger TRER and RER 1, and smaller span compared to the healthy side. DATA CONCLUSION: Preoperative evaluation of TRER and IER 1 metrics in the CST may serve as a tool for assessing the risk of postoperative motor complications in insular LGG patients. BACKGROUND: The relationship between postoperative adverse events and blood pressures in the preoperative period remains poorly understood. This study tested the hypothesis that day-of-surgery preoperative blood pressures are associated with postoperative adverse events. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective, observational study of adult patients having elective procedures requiring an inpatient stay between November 2017 and July 2021 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center to examine the independent associations between preoperative systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP, DBP) recorded immediately before anesthesia care and number of postoperative adverse events-myocardial injury, stroke, acute kidney injury, and mortality-while adjusting for potential confounders. The study used multivariable ordinal logistic regression to model the relationship. RESULTS: The analysis included 57,389 cases. The overall incidence of myocardial injury, stroke, acute kidney injury, and mortality within 30 days of surgery was 3.4% (1,967 events), 0.4% (223), 10.2% (5,871), and 2.1% (1,223), respectively. The independent associations between both SBP and DBP measurements and number of postoperative adverse events were found to be U-shaped, with greater risk both above and less than SBP 143 mmHg and DBP 86 mmHg-the troughs of the curves. The associations were strongest at SBP 173 mmHg (adjusted odds ratio, 1.212 vs. 143 mmHg; 95% CI, 1.021 to 1.439; P = 0.028), SBP 93 mmHg (adjusted odds ratio, 1.339 vs. 143 mmHg; 95% CI, 1.211 to 1.479; P < 0.001), DBP 106 mmHg (adjusted odds ratio, 1.294 vs. 86 mmHg; 95% CI, 1.003 to 1.17671; P = 0.048), and DBP 46 mmHg (adjusted odds ratio, 1.399 vs. 86 mmHg; 95% CI, 1.244 to 1.558; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative blood pressures both less than and above a specific threshold were independently associated with a higher number of postoperative adverse events, but the data do not support specific strategies for managing patients with low or high blood pressure on the day of surgery.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the relationship between the methylation levels of the O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter and the structural connectivity in insular gliomas across hemispheres. METHODS: We analyzed 32 left and 29 right insular glioma cases and 50 healthy controls, using differential tractography, correlational tractography, and graph theoretical analysis to investigate the correlation between structural connectivity and the methylation level. RESULTS: The differential tractography results revealed that in left insular glioma, the volume of affected inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF, p = 0.019) significantly correlated with methylation levels. Correlational tractography results showed that the quantitative anisotropy (QA) value of peritumoral fiber tracts also exhibited a significant correlation with methylation levels (FDR < 0.05). On the other hand, in right insular glioma, anterior internal part of the reticular tract, IFOF, and thalamic radiation showed a significant correlation with methylation levels but at a different correlation direction from the left side (FDR < 0.05). The graph theoretical analysis showed that in the left insular gliomas, only the radius of graph was significantly lower in methylated MGMT group than unmethylated group (p = 0.047). No significant correlations between global properties and methylation levels were observed in insular gliomas on both sides. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight a significant, hemisphere-specific correlation between MGMT promoter methylation and structural connectivity in insular gliomas. This study provides new insights into the genetic influence on glioma pathology, which could inform targeted therapeutic strategies.

The use of CO2 as a feedstock for the production of carbon-based fuels and value-added chemicals offers a promising route toward carbon neutrality. In this study, two Cu-based electrocatalysts, namely, Cu24/N-C and Cu2/N-C, are successfully prepared by thermal treatment of Cu24 metal-organic polyhedron-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocrystals (Cu24/ZIF-8) and Cu2 dinuclear compound-loaded ZIF-8 nanocrystals (Cu2/ZIF-8), respectively. Extensive structural and compositional analyses were conducted to confirm the formation of Cu nanocluster-loaded N-doped porous carbon supports in both Cu24/N-C and Cu2/N-C and Cu nanoparticles encapsulated by graphitic carbons in Cu2/N-C as well. These two Cu-based electrocatalysts exhibited different behaviors in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The Cu24/N-C electrocatalyst showed high selectivity for CO production, while Cu2/N-C showed a preference for alcohol generation. The excellent stability of Cu2/N-C over a 30 h continuous electrochemical reduction further highlights its potential for practical applications. The difference in electrocatalytic performance observed in the two catalysts for CO2RR was attributed to distinct catalytic sites associated with Cu nanoclusters and nanoparticles. This research reveals the significance of their structures and compositions for the development of highly selective electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction.

Protein thermodynamic stability is essential to clarify the relationships among structure, function, and interaction. Therefore, developing a faster and more accurate method to predict the impact of the mutations on protein stability is helpful for protein design and understanding the phenotypic variation. Recent studies have shown that protein embedding will be particularly powerful at modeling sequence information with context dependence, such as subcellular localization, variant effect, and secondary structure prediction. Herein, we introduce a novel method, ProSTAGE, which is a deep learning method that fuses structure and sequence embedding to predict protein stability changes upon single point mutations. Our model combines graph-based techniques and language models to predict stability changes. Moreover, ProSTAGE is trained on a larger data set, which is almost twice as large as the most used S2648 data set. It consistently outperforms all existing state-of-the-art methods on mutation-affected problems as benchmarked on several independent data sets. The protein embedding as the prediction input achieves better results than the previous results, which shows the potential of protein language models in predicting the effect of mutations on proteins. ProSTAGE is implemented as a user-friendly web server.

BACKGROUND: The mental health inequality between migrants and non-migrants was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Identifying key determinants of this inequality is essential in promoting health equity. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited Shanghai residents by purposive sampling during the city-wide lockdown (from April 29 to June 1, 2022) using an online questionnaire. Migration statuses (non-migrants, permanent migrants, and temporary migrants) were identified by migration experience and by household registration in Shanghai. Mental health symptoms (depression, anxiety, loneliness, and problematic anger) were assessed by self-report scales. The nonlinear Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition was used to quantify mental health inequality (i.e., differences in predicted probabilities between migration groups) and the contribution of expected correlates (i.e., change in predicted probability associated with variation in the correlate divided by the group difference). RESULTS: The study included 2738 participants (771 [28.2%] non-migrants; 389 [14.2%] permanent migrants; 1578 [57.6%] temporary migrants). We found inequalities in depression (7.1%) and problematic anger (7.8%) between permanent migrants and non-migrants, and inequalities in anxiety (7.3%) and loneliness (11.3%) between temporary migrants and non-migrants. When comparing permanent migrants and non-migrants, age and social capital explained 12.7% and 17.1% of the inequality in depression, and 13.3% and 21.4% of the inequality in problematic anger. Between temporary migrants and non-migrants, age and social capital also significantly contributed to anxiety inequality (23.0% and 18.2%) and loneliness inequality (26.5% and 16.3%), while monthly household income (20.4%) and loss of monthly household income (34.0%) contributed the most to anxiety inequality. CONCLUSIONS: Significant inequalities in depression and problematic anger among permanent migrants and inequalities in anxiety and loneliness among temporary migrants were observed. Strengthening social capital and economic security can aid in public health emergency preparedness and promote mental health equity among migrant populations.

By using first principles calculations, we theoretically investigate the electronic structures and the interfacial and optical properties of the two-dimensional tellurene (Te)-gallium arsenide (GaAs) van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs), i.e., α-Te/GaAs and γ-Te/GaAs, formed using Te and GaAs monolayers. It has been demonstrated that, the semiconductor-semiconductor contacted α-Te/GaAs vdWH exhibits a type-II band alignment with a direct band gap of 0.28 eV while the metal-semiconductor contacted γ-Te/GaAs vdWH has a p-type Schottky contact with a Schottky barrier height (SBH) of 0.36 eV at the interface. The transition from type-II to type-III band alignment is observed firstly in the α-Te/GaAs vdWH when the in-plane biaxial strain is less than -5.2% and larger than 4.4%, meanwhile, the p-type Schottky contact to Ohmic contact transition may be realized in the γ-Te/GaAs vdWH when the in-plane biaxial strain is less than -2.4%. Finally, the maximum optical absorption coefficients of the α- and γ-Te/GaAs vdWHs have been found to be up to 31% and 29%, respectively, and may be modulated effectively by applying in-plane biaxial strain. The obtained results may be of importance in the design of nanoelectronic devices based on the proposed tellurene/GaAs vdWHs.
