OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: Changes in the immune status of patients with sepsis may have a major impact on their prognosis. Our research focused on changes in various immune cell subsets and T-cell activation during the progression of sepsis. METHODS AND SUBJECTS: We collected data from 188 sepsis patients at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The main focus was on the patient's immunocyte subset typing, T-cell activation/Treg cell analysis, and cytokine assay, which can indicate the immune status of the patient. RESULTS: The study found that the number of CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, NK cells, and B cells decreased early in the disease, and the decrease in CD4+ and CD8+ T cells was more pronounced in the death group. T lymphocyte activation was inhibited, and the number of Treg cells increased as the disease progressed. T lymphocyte inhibition was more significant in the death group, and the increase in IL-10 was more significant in the death group. Finally, we used patients' baseline conditions and immunological detection indicators for modeling and found that IL-10, CD4+ Treg cells, CD3+HLA-DR+ T cells, and CD3+CD69+ T cells could predict patients' prognosis well. CONCLUSION: Our study found that immunosuppression occurs in patients early in sepsis. Early monitoring of the patient's immune status may provide a timely warning of the disease.

A 54-year-old woman in good health was admitted to our hospital with diquat poisoning. The patient drank an unknown dose of diquat, and acute kidney injury developed early. However, there were no obvious pulmonary abnormalities and no signs of central nervous system toxicity in the early stage. The woman underwent active treatment, which resulted in a significant decrease in blood diquat levels, but her lung condition progressively worsened and neurological symptoms developed. Fortunately, the patient survived after intensive hemoperfusion combined with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), intracranial pressure reduction, and anti-infective treatment. This case report highlights the importance of being aware of the development of delayed pulmonary symptoms and neurologic complications when caring for patients poisoned with diquat, even in those with low diquat blood concentrations. Interestingly, we also detected the concentration of diquat in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with diquat poisoning, and found that the rate of decrease of diquat concentration in the CSF was considerably slower than that in the blood.Notably, a specific correlation was observed between the concentration of diquat in the CSF, rather than in the blood, and both the intracranial pressure (ICP) and the severity of cerebral edema in this patient.

Diquat (DQ) is a widely utilized nonselective herbicide that is primarily used to control a wide range of weeds and crop residues. It also has significant environmental implications. DQ exposure can cause severe damage to the central nervous system (CNS), a critical symptom of acute poisoning that endangers patients. Despite its severity, the underlying mechanisms of DQ-induced toxic encephalopathy remain unclear, hindering the development of precise treatments. Our research demonstrated that acute DQ exposure in mice significantly increases oxidative stress and triggers neuroinflammation in the hippocampus. Furthermore, in vitro findings indicate that the detrimental effects of DQ are mediated by its disruption of autophagic processes, leading to exacerbated neural damage. DQ initially promotes autophagy in BV2 microglia for self-protection against oxidative stress and inflammation. However, this process is subsequently blocked, intensifying neural damage. Crucially, our results show that the activation of autophagy can reverse these adverse effects. This study not only sheds light on the intricate mechanisms of DQ neurotoxicity but also provides potential therapeutic targets for mitigating DQ-induced toxic encephalopathy.

Investigation of high-performance lasers monolithically grown on silicon (Si) could promote the development of silicon photonics in regimes other than the 1.3 -1.5 µm band. 980â nm laser, a widely used pumping source for erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in the optical fiber communication system, can be used as a demonstration for shorter wavelength lasers. Here, we report continuous wave (CW) lasing of 980â nm electrically pumped quantum well (QW) lasers directly grown on Si by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Utilizing the strain compensated InGaAs/GaAs/GaAsP QW structure as the active medium, the lowest threshold current obtained from the lasers on Si was 40â mA, and the highest total output power was near 100â mW. A statistical comparison of lasers grown on native GaAs and Si substrates was conducted and it reveals a somewhat higher threshold for devices on Si. Internal parameters, including modal gain and optical loss are extracted from experimental results and the variation on different substrates could provide a direction to further laser optimization through further improvement of the GaAs/Si templates and QW design. These results demonstrate a promising step towards optoelectronic integration of QW lasers on Si.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the performance of a radiomics nomogram developed based on gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) MRI for preoperative prediction of microvascular invasion (MVI) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and to identify patients who may benefit from the postoperative adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization (PA-TACE). METHODS: A total of 260 eligible patients were retrospectively enrolled from three hospitals (140, 65, and 55 in training, standardized external, and non-standardized external validation cohort). Radiomics features and image characteristics were extracted from Gd-EOB-DTPA MRI image before hepatectomy for each lesion. In the training cohort, a radiomics nomogram which incorporated the radiomics signature and radiological predictors was developed. The performance of the radiomics nomogram was assessed with respect to discrimination calibration, and clinical usefulness with external validation. A score (m-score) was constructed to stratify the patients and explored whether it could accurately predict patient who benefit from PA-TACE. RESULTS: A radiomics nomogram integrated with the radiomics signature, max-D(iameter) > 5.1 cm, peritumoral low intensity (PTLI), incomplete capsule, and irregular morphology had favorable discrimination in the training cohort (AUC = 0.982), the standardized external validation cohort (AUC = 0.969), and the non-standardized external validation cohort (AUC = 0.981). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical usefulness of the novel radiomics nomogram. The log-rank test revealed that PA-TACE significantly decreased the early recurrence in the high-risk group (p = 0.006) with no significant effect in the low-risk group (p = 0.270). CONCLUSIONS: The novel radiomics nomogram combining the radiomics signature and clinical radiological features achieved preoperative non-invasive MVI risk prediction and patient benefit assessment after PA-TACE, which may help clinicians implement more appropriate interventions. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Our radiomics nomogram could represent a novel biomarker to identify patients who may benefit from the postoperative adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization, which may help clinicians to implement more appropriate interventions and perform individualized precision therapies. KEY POINTS: ⢠The novel radiomics nomogram developed based on Gd-EOB-DTPA MRI achieved preoperative non-invasive MVI risk prediction. ⢠An m-score based on the radiomics nomogram could stratify HCC patients and further identify individuals who may benefit from the PA-TACE. ⢠The radiomics nomogram could help clinicians to implement more appropriate interventions and perform individualized precision therapies.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop a pipeline for selecting the best feature engineering-based radiomic path to predict epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutant lung adenocarcinoma in 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). METHODS: The study enrolled 115 lung adenocarcinoma patients with EGFR mutation status from June 2016 and September 2017. We extracted radiomics features by delineating regions-of-interest around the entire tumor in 18F-FDG PET/CT images. The feature engineering-based radiomic paths were built by combining various methods of data scaling, feature selection, and many methods for predictive model-building. Next, a pipeline was developed to select the best path. RESULTS: In the paths from CT images, the highest accuracy was 0.907 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.849, 0.966), the highest area under curve (AUC) was 0.917 (95% CI: 0.853, 0.981), and the highest F1 score was 0.908 (95% CI: 0.842, 0.974). In the paths based on PET images, the highest accuracy was 0.913 (95% CI: 0.863, 0.963), the highest AUC was 0.960 (95% CI: 0.926, 0.995), and the highest F1 score was 0.878 (95% CI: 0.815, 0.941). Additionally, a novel evaluation metric was developed to evaluate the comprehensive level of the models. Some feature engineering-based radiomic paths obtained promising results. CONCLUSIONS: The pipeline is capable of selecting the best feature engineering-based radiomic path. Combining various feature engineering-based radiomic paths could compare their performances and identify paths built with the most appropriate methods to predict EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma in 18FDG PET/CT. The pipeline proposed in this work can select the best feature engineering-based radiomic path.

Anxiety and depressive disorders are closely associated; however, the pathophysiology of these disorders remains poorly understood. Further exploration of the mechanisms involved in anxiety and depression such as the stress response may provide new knowledge that will contribute to our understanding of these disorders. Fifty-eight 8-12-week-old C57BL6 mice were separated into experimental groups by sex as follows: male controls (n = 14), male restraint stress (n = 14), female controls (n = 15) and female restraint stress (n = 15). These mice were taken through a 4-week randomised chronic restraint stress protocol, and their behaviour, as well as tryptophan metabolism and synaptic proteins, were measured in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Adrenal catecholamine regulation was also measured. The female mice showed greater anxiety-like behaviour than their male counterparts. Tryptophan metabolism was unaffected by stress, but some basal sex characteristics were noted. Synaptic proteins were reduced in the hippocampus in stressed females but increased in the prefrontal cortex of all female mice. These changes were not found in any males. Finally, the stressed female mice showed increased catecholamine biosynthesis capability, but this effect was not found in males. Future studies in animal models should consider these sex differences when evaluating mechanisms related to chronic stress and depression.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) patients not only undergo physical symptoms but also psychological suffering. Psycho-education interventions have been implemented widely to improve their psychological well-being. However, the effectiveness of psycho-education is unclear. Therefore, this research evaluates the effectiveness of psycho-education interventions on CRC patient outcomes and identifies effective intervention characteristics. The researchers searched the following databases: PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, ProQuest, Wan Fang Data, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedicine Database, and China Academic Journals Full-Text Database. Additionally, gray literature and bibliographies of the included studies were also searched. Finally, this review included 11 randomized controlled trials and one controlled clinical trial. The results showed that psycho-education interventions exerted positive impacts on relieving anxiety and depression, improving self-efficacy and quality of life for CRC patients either immediately, post-intervention, or at least 2 months after intervention. Despite the variety of psycho-education interventions, health education, stress management, coping skills training, and social support are also essential components. Future research should include multi-center studies with sufficient sample sizes and rigorous designs.

Excellent performance of InAs quantum dot (QD) lasers grown on Si in the datacom and telecom bands has been reported in recent years. InP QD lasers on Si with emission wavelength at 650 nm-750 nm are seldom explored. In this paper, we report the growth and room temperature lasing of electrically pumped InP/GaAsP QD lasers directly grown on (001) Si emitting at 750 nm. The lowest threshold current density obtained is â¼650 A/cm2, measured on a 2 mm × 70 µm device. Moreover, the highest operating temperature of the InP QD laser grown on the GaAs/Si template is above 95°C. This 750 nm near red on-chip light source for the monolithic integration of Si photonics is potentially applicable in display, bio-photonics, and spatial mapping.
RESUMO
Most Alzheimer disease (AD) patients present as sporadic late onset AD, with metabolic factors playing an important role in the occurrence and development of AD. Given the link between peripheral insulin resistance and tau pathology in streptozotocin-injected and db/db mouse models of diabetes, we fed high fat diet (HFD) to pR5 mice expressing P301L mutant human tau, with the aim of developing a new model with characteristics of obesity, T2DM and AD to mimic AD patients exacerbated by obesity and T2DM, an increasing trend in modern society. In our study, pR5 and C57BL/6 (WT) mice were randomly allocated to a standard diet (STD) or HFD for 30 weeks starting at 8 weeks of age. Food intake was measured weekly, body weight and fasting glucose levels were measured fortnightly, and a comprehensive behavioral test battery was performed to assess anxiety, depression and cognitive dysfunction. Glucose and insulin tolerance tests were performed after 30 weeks of HFD. We also investigated the effect of long term HFD on tau pathology in the brains of WT and P301L mice by performing western blotting of whole brain homogenates for total tau, phosphorylated tau at Ser396 and Thr231. Our results show that pR5 mice fed with HFD are more vulnerable to diet induced obesity compared to WT, especially with increasing age. In addition, pR5 mice on HFD developed glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. It was identified that long term HFD significantly aggravates depression like behavior and impairs cognitive function in pR5 mice, and also induces anxiety like behavior in both pR5 and WT mice. Long term HFD was also shown to aggravate tau hyperphosphorylation in pR5 transgenic mice, and increase total and hyperphosphorylated tau in WT mice. These results indicate that diet induced obesity of pR5 transgenic mice expressing P301L mutant human tau generates T2DM, and aggravates tau phosphorylation, and is therefore a model useful for investigations that seek to understand the relationships between AD, T2DM and obesity, and the underlying biochemical changes and mechanisms associated with metabolic disorders and AD tauopathy.

BACKGROUND: Amanita poisoning as a foodborne disease has raised concerning mortality issues. Reducing the interval between mushroom ingestion and medical intervention could greatly influence the outcomes of Amanita poisoning patients, while treatment is highly dependent on a confirmed diagnosis. To this end, we developed an early detection-guided intervention strategy by optimizing diagnostic process with performing α-amanitin detection, and further explored whether this strategy influenced the progression of Amanita poisoning. METHODS: This study was a retrospective analysis of 25 Amanita poisoning patients. Thirteen patients in the detection group were diagnosed mainly based on α-amanitin detection, and 12 patients were diagnosed essentially on the basis of mushroom consumption history, typical clinical patterns and mushroom identification (conventional group). Amanita poisoning patients received uniform therapy, in which plasmapheresis was executed once confirming the diagnosis of Amanita poisoning. We compared the demographic baseline, clinical and laboratory data, treatment and outcomes between the two groups, and further explored the predictive value of α-amanitin concentration in serum. RESULTS: Liver injury induced by Amanita appeared worst at the fourth day and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) rose higher than aspartate aminotransferase (AST). The mortality rate was 7.7% (1/13) in the detection group and 50.0% (6/12) in the conventional group (P = 0.030), since patients in the detection group arrived hospital much earlier and received plasmapheresis at the early stage of disease. The early detection-guided intervention helped alleviate liver impairment caused by Amanita and decreased the peak AST as well as ALT. However, the predictive value of α-amanitin concentration in serum was still considered limited. CONCLUSIONS: In the management of mushroom poisoning, consideration should be given to the rapid detection of α-amanitin in suspected Amanita poisoning patients and the immediate initiation of medical treatment upon a positive toxin screening result.

This meta-analysis was a systematic review of evidence on the effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on quality of life (QOL), pain, fatigue, anxiety, and depression in cancer patients. Until July 2020, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The study included 18 RCTs. The MBSR/MBCT intervention resulted in a significant effect on QOL (SMD 0.80, CI 0.28, 1.32, I2 = 94%). In subgroup analysis, MBSR/MBCT interventions had a significant effect in the early cancer stage on anxiety (SMD - 3.48, CI - 4.07, - 2.88), and QOL (SMD 4.30, CI 3.62, 4.99); in alleviating decreasing pain (SMD - 0.42, CI - 0.70, - 0.14) within 4 weeks after the end of intervention, and alleviating fatigue in younger participants (SMD - 0.64, CI - 1.09, - 0.19). MBSR/MBCT has short-term effects on cancer patients, especially in younger patients and early cancer stages.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that using some post-processing methods, such as nonlinear-blending and linear blending techniques, has potential to improve dual-energy computed (DECT) image quality. OBJECTIVE: To improve DECT image quality of hepatic portal venography (CTPV) using a new non-linear blending method with computer-determined parameters, and to compare the results to additional linear and non-linear blending techniques. METHODS: DECT images of 60 patients who were clinically diagnosed with liver cirrhosis were selected and studied. Dual-energy scanning (80âkVp and Sn140âkVp) of CTPV was utilized in the portal venous phase through a dual-source CT scanner. For image processing, four protocols were utilized including linear blending with a weighing factor of 0.3 (protocol A) and 1.0 (protocol B), non-linear blending with fixed blending width of 200 HU and set blending center of 150HU (protocol C), and computer-based blending (protocol D). Several image quality indicators, including signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and contrast of hepatic portal vein and hepatic parenchyma, were evaluated using the paired-sample t-test. A 5-grade scale scoring system was also utilized for subjective analysis. RESULTS: SNR of protocols A-D were 9.1±2.1, 12.1±3.0, 11.6±2.8 and 14.4±3.2, respectively. CNR of protocols A-D were 4.6±1.3, 8.0±2.3, 7.0±2.0 and 9.8±2.4, respectively. The contrast of protocols A-D were 37.7±11.6, 91.9±21.0, 66.2±19.0 and 107.7±21.3, respectively. The differences between protocol D and other three protocols were significant (Pâ<â0.01). In subjective evaluation, the modes of protocols A, B, C, and D were rated poor, good, generally acceptable, and excellent, respectively. CONCLUSION: The non-linear blending technique of protocol D with computer-determined blending parameters can help improve imaging quality of CTPV and contribute to a diagnosis of liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Blending technology is usually used to improve quality of dual-energy computed (DECT) images. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the blended DECT image qualities by employing the Blending-Property-Map (BP-Map) and elucidating the optimal parameters with the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). METHODS: Sixty pairs of 80âkV and 140âkV CT images are blended non-linearly by four methods. Protocol A uses the fixed values of blending width (BW) and blending center (BC); Protocol B uses the values of BWâ=â (CThepatic portal vein - CThepatic parenchymal) / 2 and BCâ=â (CThepatic portal veinâ+âCThepatic parenchymal) / 2; Protocol C uses a BW ranging from 10 to 100 HU at an interval of 10 HU and BCâ=â(CThepatic portal veinâ+âCThepatic parenchymal) / 2; Protocol D uses the BP-Map that covers all possible values of BW and BC. RESULTS: When using CT value of adipose tissue as noise, the calculated SNR and CNR of optimal blending width and blending center were 123.22±41.73 and 9.00±3.52, respectively, by the BP-Map in the protocol D. By employing the CT value of back muscle as noise, the SNR and CNR of the best-blended images were 75.90±14.52 and 6.39±2.37, respectively. The subjective score of protocol D was 4.88±0.12. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to traditional blending methods, the BP-Map technique can determine the optimal blending parameter and provide the best-blended images with the highest SNR and CNR.

BACKGROUND: A valid and reliable nursing record audit tool can simplify nursing records and provide a basis for quality auditing. PURPOSE: To ensure the validity and reliability of the Nursing Process Scale to promote accurate monitoring of nursing record quality. METHODS: This study employed structural equation modeling to examine the content validity and reliability of the current Nursing Process Scale. A total of 660 results from a medical center were used to revise the content and then the validity and reliability of the revised scale were analyzed. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used in three stages, namely item generation and content validity testing, item analysis and validity testing, and reliability testing. RESULTS: Validity, reliability, and organization based on clinical practice were used to identify and remove scale items with low factor loadings. The remaining items were organized under several factors in the revised Nursing Process Scale, which had good internal consistency with a Cronbach's α of .653 in the EFA, a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value of .614, and a significant Bartlett's test of sphericity value. Five factors and 22 questions were extracted from the original 32 questions. The CFA conducted after the model correction reduced the number of questions to 10 and the number of factors to 3, with each index reaching the ideal level. To improve ease-of-use in clinical settings, the important items were reduced from 32 to 22 questions, including the 10 questions suggested by the CFA. CONCLUSIONS: The validity, reliability, and organization based on clinical practice were considered in the removal of items with low factor loadings. Axial conversion was used to generate a component matrix, which allowed item rearrangement across factors and the revision of the Nursing Process Scale. The development of simple valid and reliable audit tools will save auditor time and allow the effective evaluation of nursing record quality and improvement in record integrity. This revised scale was reviewed and approved for implementation in 42 clinical wards.

Direct epitaxy of InP quantum dot (QD) lasers on silicon (Si) provides an on-chip red laser source for integrated Si photonics with different applications. Here, we demonstrate the first, to the best of our knowledge, InP QD lasers directly grown on (001) Si. Combining highly emissive InP QDs and a GaAs/Si template with low defect density, continuous-wave (CW) lasing of micro-disk lasers (MDLs) on Si is achieved at room temperature. The lowest threshold of MDLs on Si is â¼500nW, without considering the micro-disk surface absorption efficiency of the pump power. The MDLs grown on the native GaAs substrate with the same growth and fabrication process are compared using statistical data analysis. Similar material characterization results and device performances on these two substrates further confirm the performance of QD lasers on Si. This demonstration paves the way for future realization of integrated photonic circuits with red and near-infrared (NIR) lasers on Si.
RESUMO
Quantum-dot (QD) and quantum-dash (QDash) have been shown to be promising gain materials for lasers directly grown on Si due to their better tolerance to crystal defects and thermal stability. Here we report optically pumped InP-based InAs QDash microdisk lasers (MDLs) directly grown on on-axis (001) Si. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of room-temperature continuous-wave lasing of a QDash MDL on Si in the C band and L band. To the best of our knowledge, the lowest threshold of around 400 µW and highest operation temperature of 323 K have been achieved. An analysis of experimental results shows that the dominant lasing wavelength of MDLs varies with the thickness and diameter of the MDLs. Our demonstration shows potential application of MDLs for multi-channel operation in densely integrated Si-photonics.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: 5-Lipoxygenase has been reported to enhance cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition is considered an important process for tumor metastasis and invasion. METHODS: The 5-lipoxygenase expression levels and the prognoses in patients with gastric cancer were evaluated by immunohistochemistry and by the log-rank test on Kaplan-Meier curves. We established 5-lipoxygenase-overexpressed and 5-lipoxygenase-silenced gastric cancer cells and measured migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition makers to examine the role of 5-lipoxygenase in gastric cancer in vitro. In vivo, 5-lipoxygenase-overexpressed gastric cancer cells were administered into mice by subcutaneous injection, intraperitoneal injection or splenic intravenous injection to study the proliferation or metastasis of 5-lipoxygenase in mice. Using the extracellular signal-regulated kinase pathway inhibitor U0126 and activator tumor growth factor-ß, we investigated the mechanism of epithelial-mesenchymal transition induced by 5-lipoxygenase in gastric cancer cells. RESULTS: 5-Lipoxygenase was upregulated in gastric cancer tissues and was related to poor overall survival in gastric cancer patients. 5-Lipoxygenase promoted gastric cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and induced the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition in gastric cancer cells. In the nude mouse model, mice with gastric cancer tumors overexpressing 5-LOX had a faster tumor growth rate and more severe abdominal and liver metastases than the control group. Inhibition of extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling by U0126 or activation by tumor growth factor-ß neutralized the effect of 5-LOX overexpression or silencing on epithelial-mesenchymal transition. CONCLUSION: 5-Lipoxygenase promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition in gastric cancer by activating the extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling pathway.

The present study aimed to perform chromosome examination and pedigree analysis on three patients with semen abnormality who had undergone in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). Peripheral blood cell culture and chromosome karyotyping were performed on 4,200 individuals who had undergone chromosome examination. Among them, 155 pregnant women who had successfully conceived were subjected to amniotic cell culture and chromosome karyotyping and those with abnormal chromosome karyotype were further subjected to C-banding and whole-genome sequencing. Mosaicism for a 46,X,inv(Y)(p11.2q11.2)pat/45,X karyotype was identified in the probands and immediate adult male relatives. The incidence of this mosaicism in the study population was only 0.07% (3/4,200), which is reported for the first time. For the proband of pedigree A, the results of whole-genome sequencing and other tests were normal, and the chromosome karyotype of IVF fetuses was 46,X,inv(Y)(p11.2q11.2)pat. All the male members of three pedigrees have normal phenotypes, with no features of Turner's syndrome (45,X) or hermaphroditism (45,X/46,XY), suggesting that the inverted Y chromosome is extremely unstable and particularly susceptible to loss in somatic cells. So we speculate this karyotype may be a unique type of inverted Y chromosome in somatic cells.

Realization of fully integrated silicon photonics has been handicapped by the lack of a reliable and efficient III-V light source on Si. Specifically, electrically pumped continuous wave (CW) lasing and operation sustainable at high temperatures are critical for practical applications. Here, we present the first electrically pumped room temperature (RT) CW lasing results of 1.55 µm quantum dash (QDash) lasers directly grown on patterned on-axis (001) Si using metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Adopting a dash-in-well structure as the active medium, the growth of QDash was optimized on an InP on Si template. Incorporating the advantages of the optimized material growth and device fabrication, good laser performance including a low threshold current of 50 mA, a threshold current density of 1.3 kA/cm2 and operation at elevated temperature up to 59 °C in CW mode was achieved. Comparison of lasers grown on Si and native InP substrates in the same growth run was made. Based on the laser characteristics measured at room temperature and elevated temperatures, the QDash quality on the two substrates is comparable. These results suggest that MOCVD is a viable technique for lasers on Si growth and represent an advance towards silicon-based photonic-electronic integration and manufacturing.
