RESUMO

In model experiments with mongrel dogs, intestinal strangulation obstruction was induced by occluding the superior mesenteric veins, and a rise in the inorganic phosphate value of the blood was observed. The high inorganic phosphate values of the fluid exuding from the strangulated bowel suggest that intestinal factors associated with the strangulated bowel may be partly responsible for this elevated phosphatemia. However, hyperphosphatemia was also found in a model experiment in which the route through which the fluid was absorbed into the blood from the peritoneal cavity was interrupted by keeping the strangulated bowel in an intestinal bag. After this, in the model experiments in which a systemic blood pressure depression curve with a percentage reduction similar to that of the decreasing arterial blood pressure resulting from strangulation was produced (by exsanguination, and even by exsanguination with adequate perfusion of the gut), plasma inorganic phosphate values also increased. Therefore it is undeniable that systemic factors other than the above-mentioned local factors are related to the rise in plasma inorganic phosphate values in experimental strangulation obstruction. Because it is not possible to assert that phosphatemia is specific to intestinal strangulation, the importance of a rise in inorganic phosphate values in the early diagnosis of intestinal strangulation cannot be considered very great.

RESUMO

Antiserum to canine serum amyloid A (SAA) was prepared in rabbits by immunization with crude SAA which was prepared from high-density lipoprotein 3 (HDL3) obtained from canine acute-phase serum. The antiserum was absorbed for contaminating antibodies by affinity chromatography using Sepharose 4B coupled with normal canine serum proteins. The rabbit anti-canine SAA serum reacted with a protein and formed a single precipitin line at the position of the alpha 1-region of the immunoelectrophoresis of canine acute-phase serum but did not react with the normal canine serum on immunoelectrophoresis. The antibody to canine SAA was also confirmed by Western blotting analysis. Canine SAA was purified as a low molecular weight protein component from crude SAA by preparative sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) after gel filtration chromatography. Purified canine SAA had a molecular weight of 15,000 as estimated by SDS-PAGE. This SAA level was found by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to increase 1 day after inoculation with Bordetella bronchiseptica to 9.0-20.1 times the preinoculation value.

RESUMO

Differences in antigenicity between human and canine C-reactive proteins were investigated by Western blotting analysis. It was confirmed that several commercial anti-human CRP sera reacted with canine CRP. However, 34 anti-canine CRP sera prepared by immunization of rabbits and goats with canine CRP all reacted with canine CRP but not with human CRP in either immunoelectrophoresis or Western blotting. Immunization with human CRP produced a cross-reacting antibody that reacted with canine CRP. Conversely, immunization with canine CRP did not produce a cross-reacting antibody that reacted with human CRP. These findings may be interpreted as showing that, while canine and human CRPs do not share common antigenicity, they do contain structurally similar antigenic determinants.

RESUMO

The serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) produced as an inflammatory response in dogs with various disorders and surgical traumas were measured by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay and slide reversed passive latex agglutination test (RPLA). The CRP levels were greatly increased 1-2 days after surgery in most of the dogs (n = 29) subjected to surgery. These levels had markedly decreased by the time the sutures were removed. In dogs with various disorders (n = 58), the serum CRP levels at first diagnosis were high in infectious diseases. In dogs from which paired serum samples were examined, the serum CRP usually showed a decrease with improvement in the condition (n = 11) or a terminal increase (n = 4) but, conversely, some showed an increase with improvement in the condition (n = 3).

RESUMO

The patient is a 58-year-old man with a 3-months history of painful swallowing. Endoscopy and biopsy demonstrated squamous cell carcinoma of the middle one third of the esophagus. On Sept. 13, 1987, the patient underwent surgery. The patient was intubated with the PVC double-lumen tube. After the resection of esophagus, when lymphadenectomy was performed, we noticed the herniation of a bronchial cuff through the left main bronchial tear. Surgical repair of the lesion was accomplished with a continuous suture with 3-0 vicryl. Subsequent course of the patient was uneventful. Tracheobronchial rupture is rare complication of intubation with PVC double-lumen tube. This complication results from measures such as using an inadequate tube size, malpositioning the tip of the tube, or insufflating the balloon too rapidly, which dose not allow adaptation of the balloon to the tracheobronchial wall. In our case, overinflation of the bronchial balloon was probably the etiology of rupture. This was probably secondary to diffusion of nitrous oxide, rather than initial over-distension. Meticulous cares must be emphasized to avoid such complication.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore factors associated with hara-kiri as a method of suicide and suicidal behavior in contemporary Japan. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on medical records of 421 patients (174 male; 247 female) who were considered suicidal and treated at the Kitasato University Hospital Emergency Medical Center in Japan between January 2006 and March 2008. We compared hara-kiri and all other methods regarding sociodemographics and clinical features of all suicidal patients. RESULTS: Instances of hara-kiri suicide attempt had the highest proportion of males (63%) among all suicide and suicidal behavior. One-way analysis of variance revealed significant differences between hara-kiri and other suicide attempt methods in the age of the suicidal patients. Result of multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that those who attempted hara-kiri suicide were likely to be male, be diagnosed with schizophrenia, survive, and be married. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that hara-kiri as a method of suicide and suicidal behavior remains prevalent in Japan, and the study findings also suggest that both clinical and cultural factors might play a role in hara-kiri as a method of suicide and suicidal behavior.

RESUMO

The ovicidal effects of heat and various chemical disinfectants on an oxyurid rat nematode Syphacia muris were investigated, using the hatching methods in artificial intestinal juice. The eggs were collected from the perianal skin of spontaneously infected rats by means of a piece of transparent adhesive tapes, and these eggs were treated with each disinfectant for two hours. It was found that 70% ethanol and 80 degrees C 30 min treatments killed almost all of the eggs. However, a small number of the eggs tested was killed by 0.02% chlorhexidine digluconate or 0.05% benzethonium chloride. Alcide, 3% saponated cresol solution, 50% isopropanol, 10 ppm sodium hypochlorite and 5 ppm iodophol had some effects against the eggs, but they didn't kill the eggs completely. A biological assay through infection of the eggs to rats might be necessary because the effects of 2% formalin on the eggs were not determined by the hatching methods.

RESUMO

Plasma endotoxin levels were examined in laboratory mice and rats sustained under germ-free (GF), SPF and conventional (CV) conditions. The values were 1.72 (GF mouse), 2.67 (SPF mouse), 2.44 (CV mouse), 2.05 (GF rat), 2.56 (SPF rat), and 3.13 pg/ml (CV rat). The GF animals showed the lowest levels, followed by SPF and CV animals, in that order. When SPF animals were transferred into the conventional condition (conventionalization), the plasma endotoxin levels changed slightly, but not significantly. The present study demonstrates that the levels of plasma endotoxin in healthy laboratory animals are relatively stable and are not affected by microbiological conditions.

RESUMO

In AKR/J mice inoculated intraperitoneally with protoscoleces of Echinococcus multilocularis, the oral administration of alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) in drinking water had no obvious effect on the development of hydatid cysts. The DFMO treatment also caused no apparent depletion of three major polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) in the cysts, although a slight reduction in the putrescine level was detected. The failure of DFMO treatment to reduce the growth of cysts in mice may result from the absence of ornithine decarboxylase in the parasite.

RESUMO

It has been proposed that the essential requirement for artificial materials to bond to living bone is the formation of bonelike apatite on their surfaces in the body. Recent studies have shown that titanium hydrogel and silica gel induce apatite formation on their surface in a simulated body fluid. In this study, the influence of titanium oxide and titanium silicate on the bonding of titanium alloys to bone was studied. Rectangular implants (15 x 10 x 2.2 mm) of titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-2Nb-Ta, Ti-6Al-4V coated with TiO2, and Ti-6Al-4V coated with Ti5Si3 were implanted into the tibial metaphyses of mature rabbits. At 8 and 24 weeks after implantation, the tibiae containing the implants were dissected out and subjected to a detaching testing. The failure load for titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-2Nb-Ta, Ti-6Al-4V coated with TiO2, and Ti-6Al-4V coated with Ti5Si3 were, respectively, 0.68 +/- 0.48, 0.22 +/- 0.46, 0.67 +/- 0.59, 2.18 +/- 0.71 and 2.03 +/- 0.41 kgf at 8 weeks, and 2.7 +/- 0.91, 2.58 +/- 1.29, 2.38 +/- 0.41, 3.79 +/- 1.7, and 2.79 +/- 0.87 kgf at 24 weeks after implantation. Histological examination by Giemsa surface staining, CMR, and SEM-EPMA revealed the coated titanium alloy implants directly bonded to bone tissue during early implantation. A Ca-P layer was observed at the interface of the coated implants and the bone. The results of this study indicated that TiO2 and Ti5Si3 can enhance the early bonding of titanium alloys to bone by inducing a Ca-P layer (chemical apatite) on the surface of titanium alloys. It also is suggested that the direct bone contact occurs in relation to the calcium and phosphorus adsorption onto the surface of the titanium passive layer formed during long-term implantation.

RESUMO

Higher infection rates were observed in gerbils and voles than in ICR mice after oral inoculation with eggs of a Japanese isolate of Taenia crassiceps. Asexual reproduction of T. crassiceps cysticerci was observed in all gerbils and voles infected i.p. with the cysticerci. However, ICR mice and Wistar rats were not suitable for the asexual proliferation of T. crassiceps. The hooks of cysticerci from mice were smaller than those from gerbils. In experimentally infected puppies, parasite development was noted as follows: strobilation and initial differentiation of the genital primordia on day 7 postinoculation (p.i.), appearance of the testes on day 9, observation of the ovaries on day 10, and development of the lateral branches of the uterus on day 15. The prepatent period was 27-31 days. After day 15 p.i., most of the worms were recovered from the middle third of the small intestine. The number of proglottids shed per day by each strobila was about 1. The number of eggs contained in a gravid segment was about 13,000.
