RESUMO

PURPOSE: Upon the outbreak of 2019, novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic confirmed the cases surpassed 20 million. Despite a few reports identified the association of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with ocular manifestations, it may assess the ocular symptoms of patients with the COVID-19 by ophthalmologists facilitate the diagnosis and prevent transmission. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with the COVID-19 admitted to Baghiatallah hospital from March 2020 to May 2020 were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed for the ocular manifestations, blood tests, and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2 using nasopharyngeal and conjunctival swabs. RESULTS: Among 60 included patients with clinically confirmed COVID-19, the median age 58.36 years (IQR: 30-88 years), 27 (45%) were male. Furthermore, 29 (48%) and 5 (8%) patients yielded positive for SARS-CoV-2 on RT-PCR from nasopharyngeal swabs and conjunctival specimens, respectively. Among 60 patients, 10 (16%) and 3 (5%), respectively, had the ocular manifestations and positive results for SARS-CoV-2 on RT-PCR from conjunctival and nasopharyngeal swabs. CONCLUSION: Although the positive rate of tear RT-PCR rate is not noticeable as nasopharyngeal swabs yet, COVID-19 transmission through the eyes is biologically plausible.

RESUMO

Fine control of ultramicroporosity (<7 Å) in carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes is highly desirable for challenging gas separation processes. Here, a versatile approach is proposed to fabricate hybrid CMS (HCMS) membranes with unique textural properties as well as tunable ultramicroporosity. The HCMS membranes are formed by pyrolysis of a polymer nanocomposite precursor containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a carbonizable nanoporous filler. The MOF-derived carbonaceous phase displays good compatibility with the polymer-derived carbon matrix due to the homogeneity of the two carbon phases, substantially enhancing the mechanical robustness of the resultant HCMS membranes. Detailed structural analyses reveal that the in situ pyrolysis of embedded MOFs induces more densified and interconnected carbon structures in HCMS membranes compared to those in conventional CMS membranes, leading to bimodal and narrow pore size distributions in the ultramicroporous region. Eventually, the HCMS membranes exhibit far superior gas separation performances with a strong size-sieving ability than the conventional polymers and CMS membranes, especially for closely sized gas pairs (Δd < 0.5 Å) including CO2 /CH4 and C3 H6 /C3 H8 separations. More importantly, the developed HCMS material is successfully prepared into a thin-film composite (TFC) membrane (≈1 µm), demonstrating its practical feasibility for use in industrial mixed-gas operation conditions.

RESUMO

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is recognized as a complex metabolic which has affected the lives of millions of people around the world. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms have been suggested to be a vital contributor to the development of T2DM. However, the association between VDR gene polymorphisms and T2DM remains controversial. We have investigated the association between two VDR gene polymorphisms (rs731236 and rs1544410) and T2DM in an Iranian population. Methods: A total of 148 T2DM patients and 100 normal controls were recruited in this study. We used polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis to perform genotyping. Results: The results of the present research revealed that the frequency of the rs731236 C allele was significantly higher in T2DM patients than in normal controls (p = 0.044). The CC genotype of rs731236 was connected with an increased risk of T2DM (OR = 2.85, 95% CI = 1.06-7.69, p = 0.039). However, no significant difference in the frequency of the rs1544410 C allele between T2DM patients and normal controls was observed (p = 0.918). Conclusion: Our findings were suggestive of the rs731236 polymorphism of the VDR as a risk factor for developing T2DM in the Iranian population, while rs1544410 polymorphism may not be associated with T2DM susceptibility. Further research is needed to approve these findings in other populations and to clarify the underlying mechanisms involved in such an association. RESUMO

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex metabolic disease that occurs as a result of insulin resistance and low insulin production. T2DM involves many organ systems that include macro-vascular and micro-vascular complications. Several genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and candidate gene studies have suggested a large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on several genes such as HHEX that were associated with T2DM susceptibility. The current study aims to look at the relationship between the risk of T2DM and the HHEX gene variant rs7923837. Methods: In this case-control study genotyping of rs7923837 of the HHEX gene was performed using the PCR-RFLP and Sanger sequencing method. Results: Frequencies of GG genotype of rs7923837 polymorphism of HHEX among subjects with and without diabetes mellitus were 33.77% and 25.47% respectively. Corresponding prevalence for the AG genotype was 51.08% and 64.15% among subjects with and without diabetes mellitus respectively. The differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.08). Conclusion: Our study revealed that polymorphisms rs7923837 of HHEX were not associated with T2DM. RESUMO

Background: One of the most efficient treatments for dry eye syndrome (DES) is to use nanocarriers as a potential delivery system. We aim to evaluate curcumin in a nano emulsion formulation. Methods: A new formulation containing 5.5% curcuminoid was used. DLS, Zeta potential, TEM, and HPLC tests were performed to determine the size and morphology. First, 30 mice were selected as atropine-induced dry eye models. Next, 25 mice in 5 groups were treated with the nano emulsion at different doses, and corneal tissues were separated for evaluation. Results: The DLS test results were indicative of the particles' stability. Nano curcumin appeared to be thoroughly effective in all groups, with the highest dose showing the most similarity to the healthy control group. Conclusions: Curcumin-based nano emulsion eye drop is a promising candidate for DES management. However, further investigation is required to evaluate the possible risks in humans.

RESUMO

The treatment of cancer patients has been prohibited by chemoresistance. Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anti-tumor compound disrupting proliferation and triggering cell cycle arrest via inhibiting activity of topoisomerase I and II. miRNAs are endogenous RNAs localized in cytoplasm to reduce gene level. Abnormal expression of miRNAs changes DOX cytotoxicity. Overexpression of tumor-promoting miRNAs induces DOX resistance, while tumor-suppressor miRNAs inhibit DOX resistance. The miRNA-mediated regulation of cell death and hallmarks of cancer can affect response to DOX chemotherapy in tumor cells. The transporters such as P-glycoprotein are regulated by miRNAs in DOX chemotherapy. Upstream mediators including lncRNAs and circRNAs target miRNAs in affecting capacity of DOX. The response to DOX chemotherapy can be facilitated after administration of agents that are mostly phytochemicals including curcumol, honokiol and ursolic acid. These agents can regulate miRNA expression increasing DOX's cytotoxicity. Since delivery of DOX alone or in combination with other drugs and genes can cause synergistic impact, the nanoparticles have been introduced for drug sensitivity. The non-coding RNAs determine the response of tumor cells to doxorubicin chemotherapy. microRNAs play a key role in this case and they can be sponged by lncRNAs and circRNAs, showing interaction among non-coding RNAs in the regulation of doxorubicin sensitivity.

RESUMO

Amblyopia is an acquired defect due to a lack of visual stimulation. Self-efficacy is one of the factors affecting the quality of life (QoL) of individuals. Low self-efficacy can decrease cognitive and behavioral functioning, whereas increased self-efficacy leads to a change in treatment acceptance behavior and, subsequently, physical and mental health. This study aimed to determine the QoL and self-efficacy in adolescents with amblyopia. This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 300 patients referred to hospitals affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran, between 2015 and 2016. Data collection tools included: 1) demographic questionnaire, 2) general self-efficacy scale, and 3) WHO QoL questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software 24 using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the mean percentage in QoL was 45.43% (weak), and the mean score in self-efficacy was 21.66%, with a standard deviation of 8.10. There was also a positive and significant relationship between patients' self-efficacy and QoL on each dimension. This study showed that demographic characteristics had no significant relationship with any of the variables of QoL and self-efficacy. However, data analysis showed a significant and positive relationship between self-efficacy and QoL.

RESUMO

Introduction: This research aimed to determine the relationship between personality dimensions with the rate of resiliency and internal cohesion regarding the intermediary role of spiritual health in candidate patients for eye surgery. Methods: The method used in this is of correlation type, and statistical population in this project included all eye patients chosen for eye surgery who were examined at technical eye clinics in Tehran. The statistical sample included 200 patients from the statistical population who were chosen through a targeted sampling method. The data collection tools were Conner and Davidson's tolerance questionnaire (2003), Maccary and Costa's personality questionnaire (1985), Antonowski's internal cohesion scale (1970), and Politzin and Elison's spiritual health questionnaire (1982). The research hypotheses were examined through regression analysis, Pearson's correlation, and path analysis. Results: The results showed that the calculated fit indices of the structural model of the research were correlated with the five dimensions of personality and internal cohesion of patients undergoing eye surgery with respect to the mediator role of spiritual health with 88% confidence. Investigation of path analysis coefficients showed a significant relationship between exogenous and intermediary variables on resiliency and internal cohesion (P value = 0.00). Conclusion: According to the results of the research, the spiritual health variable plays a significant mediating role for exogenous and endogenous variables in this model. Therefore, personality traits not only directly influence resilience and internal cohesion but also indirectly influence spiritual well-being.

RESUMO

An atomistic model of the metal-organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8/graphene oxide (GO) interface has been constructed using a combination of density functional theory calculations and force-field-based molecular dynamics simulations. Two microscopic models of GO were constructed integrating basal plane and both basal and edge plane functional groups, called GO-OH and GO-CO2H, respectively. Analysis of the MOF/GO site-to-site interactions, surface coverage, and GO conformation/stiffness and a full characterization of the interfacial region is provided with a special emphasis on the influence of the chemical composition of GO. It was evidenced that the structure of the GO/ZIF-8 composite at the interface is stabilized by a relatively homogeneous set of interactions between the hydrogen atoms of the -NH and -OH terminal functions of ZIF-8 and the oxygen atoms of the epoxy, hydroxyl, and carboxylic groups of GO, leading to an optimal coverage of the MOF surface by GO. Such a scenario implies a significant distortion of the first GO layer brought into contact with the MOF surface, leading to an interfacial region with a relatively small width. This computational exploration strongly suggests that a very good compatibility between these two components would lead, in turn, to the preparation of defect-free ZIF-8/GO films. These predictions are correlated with an experimental effort that consists of successfully prepared homogeneous MOF/GO films that were further characterized by transmission electron microscopy and mechanical testing.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Having awareness, interest, and positive attitude toward one's fields of study leads to the development of a compatibility between demands and expectations on the one hand and future career on the other hand. This study was carried out to determine the level of awareness, attitude, and interest of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy students of Islamic Azad University, Tehran Medical Sciences Branch toward their own field of study on entering university. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This research is a basic descriptive study conducted on 273 students who had just entered university. This study was performed using census. Data collection instrument was a four-part questionnaire which included demographic information, and questions measuring students' awareness, attitude, and interest. RESULTS: With regard to their field of study, there was no statistically significant difference in the average of students' awareness (P = 0.731). The attitude of medicine students was significantly more positive than pharmacy and dentistry students (P < 0.001), and the attitude of dentistry students was significantly more positive than that of pharmacy students (P = 0.460). Medical students' interest level was significantly higher than that of pharmacy and dentistry students (P < 0.05), and the interest level of dentistry students was significantly greater than the interest level of pharmacy students (P = 024/0). There was a statistically significant positive relationship between awareness and attitude and between awareness and interest in all of the study subjects (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The study results indicated that having a high level of awareness toward one's major led students studying in medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy to experience a more positive attitude and a higher level of interest. Thus, before entering the university, academic counseling will be beneficial for acquiring a better understanding of most majors, a goal which could be provided through school, social media, and family.

RESUMO

A sputtered oxide layer enabled by a solution-processed oxide nanoparticle buffer layer to protect underlying layers is used to make semi-transparent perovskite solar cells. Single-junction semi-transparent cells are 12.3% efficient, and mechanically stacked tandems on silicon solar cells are 18.0% efficient. The semi-transparent perovskite solar cell has a T 80 lifetime of 124 h when operated at the maximum power point at 100 °C without additional sealing in ambient atmosphere under visible illumination.

RESUMO

We demonstrate four- and two-terminal perovskite-perovskite tandem solar cells with ideally matched band gaps. We develop an infrared-absorbing 1.2-electron volt band-gap perovskite, FA0.75Cs0.25Sn0.5Pb0.5I3, that can deliver 14.8% efficiency. By combining this material with a wider-band gap FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.5Br0.5)3 material, we achieve monolithic two-terminal tandem efficiencies of 17.0% with >1.65-volt open-circuit voltage. We also make mechanically stacked four-terminal tandem cells and obtain 20.3% efficiency. Notably, we find that our infrared-absorbing perovskite cells exhibit excellent thermal and atmospheric stability, not previously achieved for Sn-based perovskites. This device architecture and materials set will enable "all-perovskite" thin-film solar cells to reach the highest efficiencies in the long term at the lowest costs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To identify mental disorders and their prevalence in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHODS: This descriptive study was carried out between January 2009 and January 2010 on 417 patients with RP, who were members of Iran RP Center. The necessary data were collected using questionnaires consisting two parts: The background characteristics and questions assessing the mental health and screening personality and psychosocial disorders, which were designed based on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Data were analyzed using SPSS software with Chi-square test to assess the relationship between background characteristics and each mental disorder. Scores in the range of 30 and 70 were considered normal. RESULTS: Patients with RP suffered from eight mental disorders with the following prevalence: Obsessive compulsive disorder (39.3%), schizophrenia (38.1%), antisocial personality (37.6%), paranoia (36.7%), hypochondrias (35.3%), depression (31.2%), hysteria (26.9%), and hypomania (23.7%). No one had all the eight mental disorders simultaneously. Statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between obsessive compulsive disorder, paranoia, depression, and hysteria and background characteristics. A significant association was found between schizophrenia and onset of RP (P = 0.047). Furthermore, a significant association was seen between hypochondrias and educational level (P = 0.026) as well as income (P = 0.037), and smoking (P = 0.009). There was also a significant association between hypomania and marital status (P = 0.027). CONCLUSION: The findings showed that RP might lead to various mental disorders, especially obsessive compulsive disorder.
