RESUMO

Four tick-borne arboviruses circulate heavily and permanently among the seabirds colonies located along the coasts of Brittany: Soldado, Zaliv Terpeniya, Avalon and a member of Tyuleniy subgroup of flaviviruses. In order to appreciate the ability of these viruses to infect man, the authors studied for antibodies the sera of farmers living in South-Finistere, in the vicinity of Cape Sizun seabirds reserve. Antibodies were actually found on 14 of 474 farmers, or 3.0 per cent, substantiating the reality of infection by these agents. The possible mechanisms of the contamination and the eventual pathologic results of these viral infections are discussed.

RESUMO

Nine strains of Avalon virus were isolated from Ixodes uriae ticks collected in the Cape Sizun seabird reserve, Brittany, from 1979 to 1985, during a longitudinal study of consequences of tick-borne infections for kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla). Avalon virus strains isolated in France proved difficult to study owing to the weak infectious titres they exhibited in suckling mice or cultured cells. However, some interesting data concerning the ecology of virus infection and the morphology of the virions were obtained and are discussed.

RESUMO

Tick paralysis is probably a common condition in wild birds, but rarely observed. The authors report the case of a collared dove (S. decaocto) presenting a fatal neurological syndrome associated with the fixation of a Ixodes pari female above the right eye. Virological studies of bird's tissues and of the tick were negative. These findings were compatible with tick paralysis or a minor equivalent of this syndrome. In addition, it was the first time that a collared dove is found as host for I. pari.

RESUMO

Sera from 215 seabirds (mainly gulls) and 74 landbirds (mainly starlings) from Brittany were studied by hemagglutination inhibition and complement fixation tests for antibody against 9 arboviruses among them 8 were previously isolated from ticks associated with seabirds. Among seabirds, 145 or 65% were found positive for flaviviruses and nairoviruses of the Hughes serogroup. Unexpected frequency of HI positive reactions for Tyuleniy virus indicate the possible circulation of this virus among seabirds colonies of Brittany in addition to the recently isolated Meaban flavivirus. Among landbirds, only one positive HI reaction for Tyuleniy virus was detected in a house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and it seems that landbirds may not play an important role in the dissemination of these arboviruses to man and to domestic animals.

RESUMO

Three viruses were isolated from ticks parasitizing nesting seabirds on Cape Sizun, Brittany, France, during the spring of 1979: Soldado like virus (Bunyaviridae, Nairovirus genus) from Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) maritimus (Argasidae), Zaliv Terpeniya (ZT) virus (Bunyaviridae, Uukuvirus genus) from Ixodes (Ceratixodes) uriae (Ixodidae) parasitizing chicks of the kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), and a virus of the Sakhalin group from I. (C.) uriae. Certain virological and ultrastructural properties of ZT virus were studied and the antigenic relationships between th French isolate and other UUK serogroup viruses from I. (C.) uriae were analyzed in the complement fixation and immune diffusion tests. Cape Sizun is notable for the unusual presence of both argasied (Ornithodoros) and ixodid (Ixodes) ticks infesting seabirds in adjacent niches in a single locality, where they are infected by different viruses.

RESUMO

Seven strains of a new Flavivirus, for which the name of Meaban virus is proposed, were isolated from the seabird tick Ornithodoros (A.) maritimus collected during 1981 and 1982 in nests of herring gulls (Larus argentatus) on islands of South Brittany, France. The new virus was compared serologically with 65 other flaviviruses including Tyuleniy virus and was found to be most closely related to, but different from Saumarez Reef virus, an agent previously isolated in Australia and Tasmania. Some general properties of Meaban virus are described and its antigenic relationships with other tick-borne flaviviruses associated with seabirds are discussed.
