RESUMO

Among 158 adults hospitalized at the University Hospital of Libreville who did not receive any treatment against malaria before blood screening, 20 were carriers of malaria parasites. Plasmodium falciparum was seen in 19 cases with a parasitic density lower than 1,000 trophozoits/mm3 of blood in 18 cases. The most important prevalence was observed into the group of older people. In most cases symptoms related to malaria did not occur during the hospitalization. We conclude that, in such patients, a parasitic density lower than 1,000 trophozoits/mm3 is not sufficient to assess the diagnosis of malaria and does not deserve systematic treatment.

RESUMO

Among 84 at-risk neonates studied over a 1-year period, 15 presented with cerebral hemorrhage (CH) detected by ultrasound. The incidence of CH was 46% in premature infants with a gestational age less than or equal to 35 weeks and 5% in neonates with a gestational age greater than 35 weeks. In 12 cases, CH was subependymal and the totally regressed. In 3 cases, the bleeding was more severe. There were 3 deaths among the 15 infants. This study underlines the high frequency of CH among the neonates in Yaoundé, and justifies systematic screening for it in the high-risk population and points out areas in which perinatal care could be improved upon and premature birth prevented.

RESUMO

In the Pediatric Unit of the University Teaching Hospital Center of Yaounde, 58 of 2,900 (2%) hospitalized children aged 0 to 15 years who had a malignancy were studied. Fourteen (24.1%) had acute leukemia based on morphologic and cytochemical studies. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia was encountered in 11 of these patients (78.6%). The male to female ratio was 1.3 to 1. Nine of the 11 children (64.3%) were 5 years of age or younger. Eleven (78.6%) died of disease progression and its complications.
