OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to assess the newly formed bone and the remnant biomaterial by comparing four different bone grafts used to treat critical-size defects, associated or not with the non-resorbable membrane. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two calvaria critical-size bone defects were created in 50 male Wistar rats. They were divided into blood (G1), autogenous (G2), bioglass (G3), hydroxyapatite (G4), and xenograft (G5) groups, associated or not with e-PTFE. The experimental periods were 15 and 45 days. Sections were prepared for histomorphometric assessment. All data were analyzed by the mixed-effects model with multiple comparisons (significance level, p < .05). RESULTS: A similar level of new bone was observed for all groups, associated with a high level of vascularization. G1 and G2 ensured sovereignty over the greater quantity of new bone. A non-significant result was reported comparing groups with and without membranes. No significant result was found between the experimental synthetic biomaterials (G3 and G4). G5L achieved 22.0% of new bone after 45 days (p > .05). All groups had a stable volume of biomaterial kept in the short term (p > .05). G2 was the best material for new bone formation and final volume of biomaterial, followed by G4 < G5 < G3. Thus, it is possible that G4 had a better degradation profile among the experimental groups. CONCLUSIONS: The best results were found in the autogenous group, with higher resorption and integration; non-significative new bone was found among the experimental groups; and the regeneration of critical bone defects using an e-PTFE barrier did not present significant results on new bone formation.

The Northeastern Mata Atlântica Freshwater ecoregion (NMAF) is part of the 25 worlds biodiversity hotspots. It comprises the Central Atlantic Forest Ecological Corridor and Chapada Diamantina Complex (in part), including high rates of endemism in coastal freshwater ecosystems. However, estimates indicate a high population decline in Freshwater ecosystems. Trichoptera are the most affected insect order, with average extinction rates of ~9% and many unknown species (e.g., estimates are around 50% in Brazil and Ecuador). This crisis can be aggravated by gaps in the knowledge of species (Linnean shortfall) and their distribution (Wallacean shortfall), caused mainly by a lack of investment in extensive fauna inventories and human resources related to systematics. Thus, to face these shortfalls in NMAF, we describe four new species of. H. (Feropsyche) and provide new distribution records. In addition, we perform niche modeling based on the species distributions of the group to identify areas with high environmental suitability to direct biodiversity research efforts on NMAF, a highly endemic and underexplored ecoregion. We increased the number of known species of NMAF from seven to 16 species. The niche modeling pointed to two areas as priorities to guide the strategies to reduce shortfalls in the NMAF.

Emotion recognition has become increasingly important in the field of Deep Learning (DL) and computer vision due to its broad applicability by using human-computer interaction (HCI) in areas such as psychology, healthcare, and entertainment. In this paper, we conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL and computer vision, analyzing and evaluating 77 papers from different sources under Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Our review covers several topics, including the scope and purpose of the studies, the methods employed, and the used datasets. The scope of this work is to conduct a systematic review of facial and pose emotion recognition using DL methods and computer vision. The studies were categorized based on a proposed taxonomy that describes the type of expressions used for emotion detection, the testing environment, the currently relevant DL methods, and the datasets used. The taxonomy of methods in our review includes Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN), Vision Transformer (ViT), and "Other NNs", which are the most commonly used models in the analyzed studies, indicating their trendiness in the field. Hybrid and augmented models are not explicitly categorized within this taxonomy, but they are still important to the field. This review offers an understanding of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and datasets for emotion recognition through facial expressions and body poses, allowing researchers to understand its fundamental components and trends.

The focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is one of the most frequent glomerulopathy in the world, being considered a significative public health problem worldwide. The disease is characterized by glomerular loss mainly due to inflammation process and collagen fibers deposition. STAT-3 is a transcription factor associated with cell differentiation, migration and proliferation and in renal cells it has been related with fibrosis, acting on the progression of the lesion. Considering this perspective, the present study evaluated the involvement of STAT-3 molecule in an experimental model of FSGS induced by Doxorubicin (DOX). DOX mimics primary FSGS by causing both glomerular and tubular lesions and the inhibition of the STAT3 pathway leads to a decrease in fibrosis and attenuation of kidney damage. We described here a novel FSGS experimental model in a strain of genetically heterogeneous mice which resembles the reality of FSGS patients. DOX-injected mice presented elevated indices of albuminuria and glycosuria, that were significantly reduced in animals treated with a STAT-3 inhibitor (STATTIC), in addition with a decrease of some inflammatory molecules. Moreover, we detected that SOCS-3 (a regulator of STAT family) was up-regulated only in STATTIC-treated mice. Finally, histopathological analyzes showed that DOX-treated group had a significant increase in a tubulointerstitial fibrosis and tubular necrosis, which were not identified in both control and STATTIC groups. Thus, our results indicate that STAT-3 pathway possess an important role in experimental FSGS induced by DOX and may be an important molecule to be further investigated.

Antimicrobial resistance is a natural phenomenon and is becoming a huge global public health problem, since some microorganisms not respond to the treatment of several classes of antibiotics. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial, antibiofilm, and synergistic effect of triterpene 3ß,6ß,16ß-trihydroxyilup-20(29)-ene (CLF1) against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis strains. Bacterial susceptibility to CLF1 was evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assay. In addition, the effect combined with antibiotics (ampicillin and tetracycline) was verified by the checkerboard method. The biofilms susceptibility was assessed by enumeration of colony-forming units (CFUs) and quantification of total biomass by crystal violet staining. The compound showed bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against all Staphylococcal strains tested. The synergistic effect with ampicillin was observed only for S. epidermidis strains. Moreover, CLF1 significantly inhibited the biofilm formation and disrupted preformed biofilm of the all strains. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed changes in the cell morphology and structure of S. aureus ATCC 700698 biofilms (a methicillin-resistant S. aureus strain). Molecular docking simulations showed that CLF1 has a more favorable interaction energy than the antibiotic ampicillin on penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 2a of MRSA, coupled in different regions of the protein. Based on the results obtained, CLF1 proved to be a promising antimicrobial compound against Staphylococcus biofilms.

INTRODUCTION: A sinus floor elevation via lateral window (LSFE) is one of the most widely used bone augmentation procedures for implant therapy in the posterior area of the maxilla.  Locating and preparing a correct opening window on the lateral sinus wall is a key step of this procedure. Conventionally, the surgeon design and locate the window after the flap is reflected based upon the information obtained from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images or other diagnostic aids. Nevertheless, in spite of the advancements in CBCT imaging, clinicians may still experience hardship in situating and procuring meticulous access to the maxillary sinus by using CBCT alone. Therefore, in cases requiring a LSFE simultaneous to implant placement, a maxillary sinus surgical guide (MSSG) has been tested and reported to be the amiable method to be utilized as a conjunct, to prevent unpredictable consequences according to its application in implying both the direction for the implant and the location of the lateral window. CASE SERIES: This article presents 3 clinical cases with a fully digital approach to guide the opening of the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, as well as the simultaneous placement of a single implant in an ideal 3D position. Based on the CBCT images and intraoral scan, a surgical guide was fabricated base on 3D software. During the surgery, this teeth-supported template can be placed intraorally, guiding sinus window opening preparation. CONCLUSION: This technique makes the sinus window opening procedure simple and predictable, reduces surgical time as well as the risk of complications, and allows the placement of the implant in the ideal 3D position.

The two-implant-supported mandibular overdenture is considered a reliable treatment option to restore masticatory function. Digital planning has been shown to improve the precision and accuracy of the surgical procedure. The outcomes are indeed pertinent to the ideal three-dimentional positioning of the implant placement. Recently, the uses of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and intraoral scan have improved greatly the workflow of digital planning; however, the sophisticated technology caused confusion among clinicians. The purpose of this case series was to exhibit the efficacy of a bone-supported guide in applying simultaneous implant placement and bone reduction, solely based on CBCT data. The bone reduction can therefore be determined accordingly, by adding windows to the guide, allowing the clinician to decide the amount of bone reduction as well as the location for implant placement. This novel surgical guide would not only fit properly on the bone but also provide the benefits of less-invasive surgery and the opportunity to place implants parallel. The  digital workflow described not only simplifies the fabrication process but also yields predictable surgical outcomes.

Intradialytic hypotension is a common complication during hemodialysis sessions. The analysis of successive RR interval variability using nonlinear methods represents a promising tool for evaluating the cardiovascular response to acute volemic changes. Thus, the present study aims to compare the variability of successive RR intervals between hemodynamically stable (HS) and unstable (HU) patients during a hemodialysis session, through linear and nonlinear methods. Forty-six chronic kidney disease patients volunteered in this study. Successive RR intervals and blood pressures were recorded throughout the hemodialysis session. Hemodynamic stability was defined based on the delta of systolic blood pressure (higher SBP-lower SBP). The cutoff for hemodynamic stability was defined as 30 mm Hg, and patients were stratified as: HS ([n = 21]: ≤29.9 mm Hg) or HU ([n = 25]: ≥30 mm Hg). Linear methods (low-frequency [LFnu] and high-frequency [HFnu] spectra) and nonlinear methods (multiscale entropy [MSE] for Scales 1-20, and fuzzy entropy) were applied. The area under the MSE curve at Scales 1-5 (MSE1-5), 6-20 (MSE6-20), and 1-20 (MSE1-20) were also used as nonlinear parameters. Frequentist and Bayesian inferences were applied to compare HS and HU patients. The HS patients exhibited a significantly higher LFnu and lower HFnu. For MSE parameters, Scales 3-20 were significantly higher, as well as MSE1-5, MSE6-20, and MSE1-20 in HS, when compared to HU patients (p < 0.05). Regarding Bayesian inference, the spectral parameters demonstrated an anecdotal (65.9%) posterior probability favoring the alternative hypothesis, while MSE exhibited moderate to very strong probability (79.4 to 96.3%) at Scales 3-20, and MSE1-5, MSE6-20, and MSE1-20. HS patients exhibited a higher heart-rate complexity than HU patients. In addition, the MSE demonstrated a greater potential than spectral methods to differentiate variability patterns in successive RR intervals.

Infections caused by microorganisms are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and natural products continue to be important sources for the discovery of new antimicrobial agents. Ursolic acid is a triterpene with known antibacterial action, being naturally found in plants, such as Jaracanda oxyphylla and Jacaranda caroba (Bignoniaceae). Ursolic acid derivative esters have revealed potential biological activities, such as antitumor, antiviral, and antibacterial activity. In this study, sixteen esters (1-16) were synthesized from ursolic acid using DIC/DMAP and characterized by infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H- and 13 C-NMR) and mass spectrometry. All ursolic acid esters were evaluated against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and the yeast Candida albicans. Six compounds are herein described for the first time (3, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 16) with yields up to 91.6 %. Compounds 11 (3ß-(3,4-dimethoxybenzoyl)ursolic acid) and 15 (3ß-nicotinoylursolic acid) displayed promising antifungal activity, with inhibition of C. albicans growth of 93.1 and 95.9 %, respectively.

This paper estimates the impact of the COVID-19 on air travel demand and emissions in Brazil, the largest aviation market in Latin America. Combining detailed flight data and data on combustion emission factors, we estimate the CO2 emissions of domestic flights. A Bayesian structural time-series model was used to estimate the impact of COVID-19 on daily trends of air travel demand and emissions. The COVID-19 caused a reduction of 68% in national passengers and 63% in total CO2 emissions compared to what would have occurred if the pandemic had not happened. Despite such a sharp drop, fuel efficiency decreased after the COVID-19 outbreak, and passenger demand recovered to 64.2% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2020. The fast recovery in domestic flights by December 2020 indicates that the emissions could soon return to pre-pandemic levels, demonstrating the challenges of reducing emissions in the aviation sector in the short term.

The purpose of this study was to test whether believed versus actual acute creatine ingestion impacted resistance exercise performance. Fifteen men (21.9 ± 2.7 years old) completed four bouts of three sets each of squat and bench press to volitional fatigue at a 10RM load with 1-min between-sets rest interval. Thirty minutes prior to each exercise bout, they received the following treatments in a randomized order: 1) nothing (CON); 2) 0.3 g·kg-1 dextrose placebo (PLC); 3) 0.3 g·kg-1 dextrose, identified as creatine (Cr-False); 4) 0.3 g·kg 20 -1 creatine, identified as creatine (CrTrue). Between-treatments comparisons included the total repetitions completed and the rate of perceived exertion. Results revealed (p < 0.05) higher repetitions performed for all treatments versus CON for both squat and bench press. In the squat, more repetitions were performed with Cr-True (p < 0.001) and CrFalse (p < 0.001) than with either CON or PLC. Bayes Factor analyses revealed strong (PLC to Cr-True BF = 19.1) and very strong (PLC to CrFalse BF = 45.3) posterior probability favouring positive effects for both "creatine" conditions over PLC for the squat. In conclusion, in acute measures, belief versus ingestion of creatine yields similar exercise performance.

We evaluated the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and risk factors among 4987 oligo/asymptomatic healthcare workers; seroprevalence was 14% and factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection were lower educational level (aOR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.03-3.60), using public transport to work (aOR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.07-2.62), and working in cleaning or security (aOR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.04-4.03).

Lipases are triacylglycerol hydrolases that catalyze hydrolysis, esterification, interesterification, and transesterification reactions. These enzymes are targets of several industrial and biotech applications, such as catalysts, detergent production, food, biofuels, wastewater treatment, and others. Microbial enzymes are preferable for large scale production due to ease of production and extraction. Several studies have reported that lipases from filamentous fungi are predominantly extracellular and highly active. However, there are many factors that interfere with enzyme production (pH, temperature, medium composition, agitation, aeration, inducer type, and concentration, etc.), making control difficult and burdening the process. This work aimed to optimize the lipase production of four fungal isolates from oily residues (Penicillium sp., Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus sp., and Aspergillus sp.). The lipase-producing fungi isolates were morphologically characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The optimal lipase production time curve was previously determined, and the response variable used was the amount of total protein in the medium after cultivation by submerged fermentation. A complete factorial design 32 was performed, evaluating the temperatures (28 °C, 32 °C, and 36 °C) and soybean oil inducer concentration (2%, 6%, and 10%). Each lipase-producing isolate reacted differently to the conditions tested, the Aspergillus sp. F18 reached maximum lipase production, compared to others, under conditions of 32 °C and 2% of oil with a yield of 11,007 (µg mL-1). Penicillium sp. F04 achieved better results at 36 °C and 6% oil, although for Aspergillus niger F16 was at 36 °C and 10% oil and Aspergillus sp. F21 at 32 °C and 2% oil. These results show that microorganisms isolated from oily residues derived from environmental sanitation can be a promising alternative for the large-scale production of lipases.

Maintaining adequate body water balance is one aim of hemodialysis that is obtained by changing the blood volume. However, it is known that volume withdrawal is followed by water redistribution between extra- and intra-cellular spaces. In this context, the skeletal muscle tissue represents almost 50% of the total body mass, and like other soft tissues, consists of about 70%-80% water. Body weight is the main parameter used to monitor the body water change after a hemodialysis session, but it does not allow inferring about the water redistribution between extra and intracellular spaces. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the immediate impact of hemodialysis on body weight and the thickness of the rectus femoris muscle. Fifteen male patients with end-stage renal disease took part in the study. Muscle thickness, measured with ultrasound imaging, and body weight and were measured before (Pre) and after (Post) (within 5 to 10 minutes after) an hemodialysis session. Paired t-test was used to compare Pre and Post measures, and Bayesian analysis was applied to check the probability to replicate the same results (ie, the magnitude of the evidence). Our results indicated that body weight, but not rectus femoris muscle thickness, is significantly reduced immediately after hemodialysis. The rectus femoris muscle thickness seems not to be a reliable parameter to infer water redistribution after hemodialysis session.

Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid derived from the metabolism of indigestible carbohydrates by the gut microbiota. Butyrate contributes to gut homeostasis, but it may also control inflammatory responses and host physiology in other tissues. Butyrate inhibits histone deacetylases, thereby affecting gene transcription, and also signals through the metabolite-sensing G protein receptor (GPR)109a. We produced an mAb to mouse GPR109a and found high expression on podocytes in the kidney. Wild-type and Gpr109a-/- mice were induced to develop nephropathy by a single injection of Adriamycin and treated with sodium butyrate or high butyrate-releasing high-amylose maize starch diet. Butyrate improved proteinuria by preserving podocyte at glomerular basement membrane and attenuated glomerulosclerosis and tissue inflammation. This protective phenotype was associated with increased podocyte-related proteins and a normalized pattern of acetylation and methylation at promoter sites of genes essential for podocyte function. We found that GPR109a is expressed by podocytes, and the use of Gpr109a-/- mice showed that the protective effects of butyrate depended on GPR109a expression. A prebiotic diet that releases high amounts of butyrate also proved highly effective for protection against kidney disease. Cheiloclinium cognatum (Miers) A.C.Sm. is an endemic species of Brazilian Cerrado that belongs to Celastraceae family. The phytochemical study of C. cognatum branches led to the identification of ten triterpenoids (TPs), 3ß-acyloxyurs-12-ene (1), friedelin (2), ß-friedelinol (3), glut-5-en-3ß-ol (4), α-amyrin (5), ß-amyrin (6), ß-sitosterol (7), canophyllol (8), 29-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one (9) and friedelane-3ß,29-diol (10). TPs 4, 5 and 6 are described for the first Cheiloclinium genus and TPs 8 and 9 were isolated in expressive amounts. Their cytotoxic activities were evaluated against THP-1 and K562 leukemia cell lines. TPs 3 and 5 were the most active, exhibiting lower or similar IC50 against both cell lines when compared to the controls. Their mechanisms of action were investigated suggesting an intrinsic mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis evidenced by up-regulation of BAK mRNA expression. Chemometric studies indicated that their activities may be related to their molecular size and shape as well as electronic interactions of C-3 hydroxy group with molecular targets.

Extracts and compounds obtained from several species of Celastraceae family are reported as potential sources of drugs due to their diverse pharmacological properties. Nevertheless, essential oil composition from these species is still little known. This work aimed at the analysis of essential oils obtained from different Brazilian Celastraceae species. A total of seventeen oils were obtained using hydrodistillation process and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Principal component analysis (PCA) allowed the identification of a chemical composition pattern among the analyzed essential oils. Some compounds were more frequent among Celastraceae species, such as cis- and trans-linalool oxide (14/17 oil samples), nerylacetone (13/17), linalool (11/17), ß-ionone (10/17), α-ionone (9/17), nerolidol (10/17), decanal (10/17), and dodecanoic acid (10/17). These results contribute to the chemophenetics of Celastraceae species.

INTRODUCTION: Aortic valve stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular pathology in the elderly and surgery (AVR) remains the gold-standard. However, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) has become an emerging alternative to surgery. In a recent survey from the European Society of Cardiology, 9,4% stated that age was the main reason to propose for TAVI. METHODS: Single-center retrospective study including 353 patients (149 ≥80 years-old;204 with 60-69 years-old) submitted to AVR between 2013-2016. Primary endpoint was survival. Secondary outcomes included the rate of post- -operative complications. Long-term survival was determined by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Continuous variables were analyzed with t-test and linear regression and categorical variables with chi-square or Fisher. RESULTS: clinical characteristics were similar between the two groups. Both had similar survival at 30 days, 12 (93,29% 60-69yo vs 91,47% ≥80yo) and 24 months (88,34% 60-69yo vs 86,11% ≥80yo). However, rapid deployment valves (RD) had better survival rates in elderly patients. Cross-clamp time was lower in ≥80yo group, with higher percentage of RD valves (20,1% vs 4.9% in 60-69yo). The rate of post-operative atrial fibrillation was higher in >80yo group (29,06% vs. 17,28%,p=0,0147). In all patients, cross-clamp time was directly related to ventilation time(p=0,025) and chest drainage(p=0,0015). CONCLUSION: AVR after 80yo is safe. Cross-clamp time is directly correlated with ventilation time and bleeding, with a stronger correlation in patients over 80yo. RD valves reduce cross-clamp times, so their use in elderly may improve surgery outcome. Prospective studies are needed to evaluate if age may be clinical criteria for a RD.

RESUMO

Imported malaria is a malaria infection diagnosed outside the area where it was acquired and is induced by human migration and mobility. This retrospective study was performed based on secondary data from 2007 to 2015. In total, 736 cases of imported malaria (79.7% of 923 cases) were recorded in Rio de Janeiro state. Of the imported cases, 55.3% came from abroad, while 44.7% came from other regions of Brazil. Most cases of imported malaria in Brazil (85.5%) originated in Amazônia Legal, and Burundi (Africa) accounted for 59% of the cases from abroad. Analyses of the determinants of imported malaria in Rio de Janeiro state must be continued to understand the relationship between the origin and destination of cases.
