RESUMO

This work reports the first electrochemical bioplatforms developed for the determination of the total contents of either target miRNA or methylated target miRNA. The bioplatforms are based on the hybridization of the target miRNA with a synthetic biotinylated DNA probe, the capture of the formed DNA/miRNA heterohybrids on the surface of magnetic microcarriers, and their recognition with an antibody selective to these heterohybrids or to the N6-methyladenosine (m6A) epimark. The determination of the total or methylated target miRNA was accomplished by labeling such secondary antibodies with the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme. In both cases, amperometric transduction was performed on the surface of disposable electrodes after capturing the resulting HRP-tagged magnetic bioconjugates. Because of their increasing relevance in colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis and prognosis, miRNA let-7a and m6A methylation were selected. The proposed electrochemical bioplatforms showed attractive analytical and operational characteristics for the determination of the total and m6A-methylated target miRNA in less than 75 min. These bioplatforms, innovative in design and application, were applied to the analysis of total RNA samples extracted from cultured cancer cells with different metastatic profiles and from paired healthy and tumor tissues of patients diagnosed with CRC at different stages. The obtained results demonstrated, for the first time using electrochemical platforms, the potential of interrogating the target miRNA methylation level to discriminate the metastatic capacities of cancer cells and to identify tumor tissues and, in a pioneering way, the potential of the m6A methylation in miRNA let-7a to serve as a prognostic biomarker for CRC.

INTRODUCTION: The recurrence of acute diverticulitis (AD) of the colon is frequent and leads to hospital readmissions and the need for elective surgery in selected cases. It is important to individualize risk factors and develop predictive tools for their identification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study included 368 patients who were diagnosed with AD between 2016 and 2021 in a tertiary general university hospital during their first episode and who had a good response to antibiotic, percutaneous, or peritoneal lavage treatment. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses of the variables associated with recurrence were performed. Subsequently, a predictive risk score was developed and validated through survival studies. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 50 months, there were 71 (19.3%) cases of recurrence out of a total of 368 patients. The mean time of recurrence was 15 months, and 73.3% of cases of recurrence occurred before 2 years of follow-up. Recurrence was independently associated with presentation with colonic perforation in the antimesenteric location (HR 3.67 95% CI [1.59-8.4]) and a CRP level greater than 100 mg/dl (HR 1.69 95% CI [1.04-2.77). A score with 5 variables was created that differentiated two risk groups: intermediate risk (0-3 points), with 19% recurrence and high risk (more than 3 points), with 42% recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of recurrence after the first episode of diverticulitis can be estimated using predictive scores. The detection of high-risk patients facilitates the individualization of follow-up and treatment.

A trendsetting direct competitive-based biosensing tool has been developed and implemented for the determination of the polyunsaturated fatty acid arachidonic acid (ARA), a highly significant biological regulator with decisive roles in viral infections. The designed methodology involves a competitive reaction between the target endogenous ARA and a biotin-ARA competitor for the recognition sites of anti-ARA antibodies covalently attached to the surface of carboxylic acid-coated magnetic microbeads (HOOC-MµBs), followed by the enzymatic label of the biotin-ARA residues with streptavidin-horseradish peroxidase (Strep-HRP) conjugate. The resulting bioconjugates were magnetically trapped onto the sensing surface of disposable screen-printed carbon transducers (SPCEs) to monitor the extent of the biorecognition reaction through amperometry. The operational functioning of the exhaustively optimized and characterized immunosensing bioplatform was highly convenient for the quantitative determination of ARA in serum samples from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2-) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-infected individuals in a rapid, affordable, trustful, and sensitive manner.

Cardiac hypertrophy is associated with increased translation. However, little is known of the mechanisms that regulate translation in hypertrophy. Members of the 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase family regulate several aspects of gene expression, including translation. An important member of this family is OGFOD1. Here, we show OGFOD1 accumulates in failing human hearts. Upon OGFOD1 deletion, murine hearts showed transcriptomic and proteomic changes, with only 21 proteins and mRNAs (0.6%) changing in the same direction. Additionally, OGFOD1-KO mice were protected from induced hypertrophy, supporting a role for OGFOD1 in the cardiac response to chronic stress.

Cardiac masses are currently studied using multimodality imaging. For diagnosis, different imaging techniques that can provide complementary information are used. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a fundamental tool for this type of pathology owing to its ability to provide tissue characterization, spatial accuracy, and the anatomic relationships of the different structures. This study presents a series of four clinical cases with an initial diagnosis of a cardiac mass. All cases were evaluated at a single center, and patients were aged 57 to 72 years. An etiological study was conducted on all patients using different imaging techniques, including MRI. This study describes the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the four cases, which included two intracardiac metastases and two benign tumors. Cardiac MRI was decisive in the diagnostic process, determining the clinical decision-making in all four cases. Cardiac MRI has emerged as a pivotal technique in the diagnosis of cardiac masses. It can provide a highly accurate histological diagnosis without the need for invasive techniques.

Video games and immersive, narrative experiences are often called upon to help students understand difficult scientific concepts, such as sense of scale. However, the development of educational video games requires expertise and, frequently, a sizable budget. Here, we report on the use of an interactive text-style video game, NanoAdventure, to communicate about sense of scale and nanotechnology to the public. NanoAdventure was developed on an open-source, free-to-use platform with simple coding and enhanced with free or low-cost assets. NanoAdventure was launched in three languages (English, Spanish, Chinese) and compared to textbook-style and blog-style control texts in a randomized study. Participants answered questions on their knowledge of nanotechnology and their attitudes toward nanotechnology before and after reading one randomly assigned text (textbook, blog, or NanoAdventure game). Our results demonstrate that interactive fiction is effective in communicating about sense of scale and nanotechnology as well as the relevance of nanotechnology to a general public. NanoAdventure was found to be the most "fun" and easy to read of all text styles by participants in a randomized trial. Here, we make the case for interactive "Choose Your Own Adventure" style games as another effective tool among educational game models for chemistry and science communication.

Asia, America, and Europe have been intellectually intertwined for centuries. Several studies have been published revealing European scholars' interest in the "exotic" languages of Asia and America, as well as in ethnographic and anthropological aspects. Some scholars such as Polymath Leibniz (1646-1716), were interested in these languages in an attempt to construct a universal language, while others tried to establish language families, like the Jesuit Hervás y Panduro (1735-1809). However, all acknowledge the importance of language and the circulation of knowledge. This paper analyzes the dissemination of the compilation of eighteenth-century multilingual lexical compilations for comparative purposes as an early globalized project. These compilations were designed by European scholars and subsequently elaborated in different languages by missionaries, explorers, and scientists in the Philippines and America. Taking the correspondence and relations between botanist Mutis (1732-1808) and bureaucrats, European scientists such as polymath Humboldt (1769-1859) and Botanist Linnaeus (1707-1778) among others, and navy officers of the scientific exploration commanded by Malaspina (1754-1809) and Bustamante y Guerra (1759-1825) into consideration, I will analyze how simultaneous projects followed a unified aim, and illustrate their substantial contribution to the study of language in the late eighteenth century.

The development of versatile and sensitive biotools to quantify specific SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulins in SARS-CoV-2 infected and non-infected individuals, built on the surface of magnetic microbeads functionalized with nucleocapsid (N) and in-house expressed recombinant spike (S) proteins is reported. Amperometric interrogation of captured N- and S-specific circulating total or individual immunoglobulin (Ig) isotypes (IgG, IgM, and IgA), subsequently labelled with HRP-conjugated secondary antibodies, was performed at disposable single or multiplexed (8×) screen-printed electrodes using the HQ/HRP/H2 O2 system. The obtained results using N and in-house expressed S ectodomains of five SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (including the latest Delta and Omicron) allow identification of vulnerable populations from those with natural or acquired immunity, monitoring of infection, evaluation of vaccine efficiency, and even identification of the variant responsible for the infection.

Noble metal nanoparticles have been extensively studied to understand and apply their plasmonic responses, upon coupling with electromagnetic radiation, to research areas such as sensing, photocatalysis, electronics, and biomedicine. The plasmonic properties of metal nanoparticles can change significantly with changes in particle size, shape, composition, and arrangement. Thus, stabilization of the fabricated nanoparticles is crucial for preservation of the desired plasmonic behavior. Because plasmonic nanoparticles find application in diverse fields, a variety of different stabilization strategies have been developed. Often, stabilizers also function to enhance or improve the plasmonic properties of the nanoparticles. This review provides a representative overview of how gold and silver nanoparticles, the most frequently used materials in current plasmonic applications, are stabilized in different application platforms and how the stabilizing agents improve their plasmonic properties at the same time. Specifically, this review focuses on the roles and effects of stabilizing agents such as surfactants, silica, biomolecules, polymers, and metal shells in colloidal nanoparticle suspensions. Stability strategies for other types of plasmonic nanomaterials, lithographic plasmonic nanoparticle arrays, are discussed as well.

Municipal and residential water purification rely heavily on activated carbon (AC), but regeneration of AC is costly and cannot be performed at the point-of-use. Clay minerals (CMs) comprise a class of naturally abundant materials with known capacities for analyte adsorbance. However, the gel-forming properties of CMs in aqueous suspension pose problems for these materials being used in water-purification. In this study, we have taken three main steps to optimize the use of CMs in these applications. First, we produced several variants of montmorillonite CMs to evaluate the effect of interstitial cation hydrophobicity on the ability of the CM to uptake chargecarrying organic pollutants. These variants include CMs with the following cations: sodium, hexyl(triphenyl) phosphonium, hexyadecyl(triphenyl)phosphonium, and hexyl(tributyl)phosphonium. Second, we synthesized polymer-clay mineral composite films composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), crosslinked in the presence of a CM variant. These films were evaluated for their ability to uptake malachite green (MG). Finally, we developed a one-pot synthetic method for the generation of polymer-clay particles for use in a continuous column process. We synthesized polymer-clay mineral particles using the highest performing CM (based on the film experiments) and evaluated the equilibrium capacity and kinetics of MG uptake from solution.

The data obtained in this study represent a comprehensive assessment of human exposure to metal(loids) enriched in the environment, derived from metallurgical activities in Cedral, a town in North-Central Mexico. A multi-elemental analysis (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Sb) shows high metal(loid) content in environmental media (tailings samples, dust samples and particulate matter < 2.5 µm collected in the urban area). Blood samples from school-age children were collected and analyzed to determine exposure levels. The assessment of the data obtained from this study shows that Sb and Cd are highly enriched elements in the environment of Cedral; their respective levels in the blood samples analyzed are 10.9 and 11.3 times higher than their pediatric reference levels. The statistical analysis indicates a strong relationship between metal(loid)s in blood samples and both dust and PM2.5 samples, which reveal that ingestion and inhalation could represent important exposure routes for metal(loid) intake. Continuous monitoring in the area is paramount to assess the health impact posed by the different routes of exposure. It is also important to implement health education programs to decrease the population's exposure to metal(loid)s and to design urgent remediation measures, to be implemented as soon as possible.

Low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatases (LMW-PTP) are ubiquitous enzymes found across a spectrum of genera from prokaryotes to higher eukaryotes. LMW-PTP belong to the Cys-based PTP class II protein family. Here, we show that LMW-PTP can be categorized into two different groups, referred as class II subdivision I (class II.I) and subdivision II (class II.II). Using BPtpA from the opportunistic pathogen Burkholderia cenocepacia, as a representative member of the LMW-PTP class II.I, we demonstrated that four conserved residues (W47, H48, D80, and F81) are required for enzyme function. Guided by an in silico model of BPtpA, we show that the conserved residues at α3-helix (D80 and F81) contribute to protein stability, while the other conserved residues in the W-loop (W47 and H48) likely play a role in substrate recognition. Overall, our results provide new information on LMW-PTP protein family and establish B. cenocepacia as a suitable model to investigate how substrates are recognized and sorted by these proteins.

Breast milk is a complex biological fluid. Additionally to its nutritional impact, it contains diverse bioactive elements related to early metabolic programming and molecular structures, such as microRNA related to the epigenetic signaling process. Now, we know that human milk is not sterile and contains a significant diversity of microorganisms such as bacteria (bacterioma), viruses (viroma) and fungi (mycobiome), all of which integrate the concept of the human milk microbiota. Apparently the origin of this microbiota is found in the entero-mammary circulation, as well as in the retrograde circulation of the skin of the mammary gland, although it is speculated in what percentage the microbiota of the oral cavity of the infant contributes in a significant way. From a functional point of view, it has been shown the transfer of this microbiota to the infant's digestive tract, which is related to better digestive tolerance, lower frequency and intensity of dysfunctionalities of the brain-intestine-microbiota axis, and improved immunity, among others.


La leche materna es un fluido biológico complejo, ya que además de nutrir, contiene diversos elementos bioactivos relacionados con el fenómeno de programación metabólica temprana e incluso contiene estructuras moleculares relacionadas con el proceso de señalización epigenética tales como los microARN. Ahora sabemos que la leche humana no es estéril y contiene una diversidad significativa de microorganismos tales como bacterias (bacterioma), virus (viroma) y hongos (micobioma), todo lo cual integra el concepto de microbiota de leche humana. Al parecer el origen de esta microbiota se encuentra en la circulación enteromamaria, así como en la circulación retrógrada de la piel de glándula mamaria, aunque se especula en qué porcentaje la microbiota de la cavidad bucal del lactante contribuye de forma significativa. Desde el punto de vista funcional, se ha demostrado transferencia de esta microbiota hacia el tubo digestivo del lactante, lo que se relaciona con una mejor tolerancia digestiva, menor frecuencia e intensidad de disfuncionalidades del eje cerebro-intestino-microbiota, y mejora de la inmunidad, entre otras.

OBJECTIVES: Umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) and haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) modalities have been developed to offset the lack of matched donors. In this study, we compare the transfusion requirements of patients undergoing UCBT and haplo-HSCT in a single institution with the aim of providing additional information for clinicians to choose the most adequate alternative graft for HSCT. METHODS: The study reviewed 67 and 46 patients undergoing UCBT and haplo-HSCT, respectively. RESULTS: There were no significant differences for RBC and PLT requirements according to the transplantation modality. Median time to RBC transfusion independence was 35 and 25.5 days in patients who received an UCBT and haplo-HSCT, respectively (P = 0.38), while median time to platelet transfusion independence was 31 days for UCBT patients and 23 for haplo-HSCT patients (P < 0.001). Days until neutrophils > 0.5 × 109 /L were the only variable that significantly influenced RBC and PLT requirements for both transplantation modalities. Cumulative incidence of RBC and PLT transfusion independence at 90 days after transplantation was similar for both UCBT and haplo-HSCT. CONCLUSIONS: Both transplantation platforms require prolonged and intensive supportive RBC and PLT transfusion therapy. Variation in the location of the 15p region D15Z1 is recognized as a polymorphism in several human populations. We used high-stringency Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) to detect D15Z1 in a Mexican cohort. Here, we report the presence of extra D15Z1 sequences on the p-arm of acrocentric chromosomes other than 15 in two groups of Mexican couples, one with healthy offspring (n = 75) and the other with aneuploid offspring (n = 87), mainly trisomy 21. The additional D15Z1 polymorphism was significantly increased in individuals with aneuploid offspring (26.4%), in comparison to individuals with healthy offspring (14%). The most frequent acceptor chromosome of D15Z1 was chromosome 13p, followed by 14p, and finally, 21p. Our results show an overall frequency of 21.6% of this polymorphism in the Mexican population and suggest that its presence might be associated with the mis-segregation of other acrocentric chromosomes and aneuploid offspring. The high frequency of the polymorphism of the D15Z1 sequence on acrocentric chromosomes other than 15 suggests a sequence homogenization of the acrocentric p arms, related to the important function of the centromere and the nucleolar organization region, which flank satellite III DNA.

BACKGROUND: Soy infant formulas (SIF) have long been used as an alternative for infants with special nutritional requirements. However, the medical indications for their use, their allergenicity, safety and efficacy are still controversial. OBJECTIVE: To present recommendations for the use of SIF based on the existing literature. METHODS: We consulted systematic reviews and clinical practice guides, through validated search algorithms, and systems such as Appraisal of Guidelines for REsearch and Evaluation (AGREE)II and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). For the elaboration of the clinical recommendations, the most important topics were analyzed and discussed by the responsible researchers and the group of experts in the development of a position paper. The quality of the evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. RESULTS: Several reports with variable quality of evidence were found. They support SIF's efficacy in the management of cow's milk allergy and infant's digestive tolerance, as well as its low cross allergy compared to cow's milk and other formulas. We also found other studies that indicate the safety of SIFs on different nutritional, immune and developmental parameters. There is also evidence that demonstrates that SIFs have important advantages in terms of cost-benefit, palatability and effects on the intestinal microbiota, compared to other formulas. CONCLUSIONS: Although evidence to recommend its use in functional digestive disorders is limited, SIFs have an adequate safety profile and are still a valid option for infant feeding.


ANTECEDENTES: Las fórmulas a base de proteína de soya (FBPS) se han utilizado desde hace tiempo como una alternativa para lactantes con requerimientos nutricionales especiales. Sin embargo, las indicaciones médicas para su uso, su alergenicidad, seguridad y eficacia aún son controvertidas. OBJETIVO: Presentar recomendaciones del uso de FBPS basadas en la literatura existente. MÉTODOS: Se realizó la consulta de revisiones sistemáticas y guías de práctica clínica, por medio de algoritmos de búsqueda validados, y sistemas como AGREE (Appraisal of Guidelines for REsearch and Evaluation) II y PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Para la elaboración de las recomendaciones clínicas se analizaron y discutieron los tópicos de mayor importancia, por parte de los investigadores responsables y el grupo de expertos del desarrollo de un documento de posición. Se evaluó la calidad de la evidencia utilizando el sistema GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation). RESULTADOS: Se encontraron distintos reportes con calidad de evidencia variable que sustentan la eficacia de las FBPS en el manejo de la alergia a la proteína de la leche de vaca y en la tolerancia digestiva del lactante, así como su baja alergia cruzada en comparación a la leche de vaca y otras fórmulas. También se encontraron otros estudios que indican la seguridad de las FBPS sobre distintos parámetros nutricionales, inmunitarios y de desarrollo. Existe además evidencia que demuestra que las FBPS tienen ventajas importantes en cuestión de costo-beneficio, palatabilidad y efectos sobre la microbiota intestinal, en comparación con otras fórmulas. CONCLUSIONES: Aunque existe evidencia limitada para recomendar su utilización en los trastornos digestivos funcionales, las FBPS tienen un perfil de seguridad adecuado y continúan siendo una opción válida para la alimentación del lactante.

In this work, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) is employed as an affinity agent screening method for the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). AFB1, a potent carcinogen produced by a fungus that infects crops, is an important target due to the monitoring required based on its FDA regulation. Polymer affinity agents, like those studied here, have the potential to enable separation and detection of relevant small molecules such as pesticides, drugs, and biological toxins, like AFB1, especially when paired with a vibrational spectroscopy technique such as SERS. Herein, seven homopolymers were synthesized to be evaluated as AFB1 affinity agents based on hypothetical hydrogen bonding interactions. Nitrogen-inclusive poly( N-(2-aminoethyl) methacrylamide) (pAEMA) polymers and their oxygen analogs, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) were evaluated. ITC was demonstrated as an effective method for rapid screening among the polymer affinity agents. Chain lengths between seven and 39 repeat units were synthesized to study length-based variance in affinity agent performance. An ITC method was optimized and used for the rapid screening of polymer affinity agents. The results were compared to those generated by SERS. Good agreement between the ITC results and follow-up SERS sensing experiments showcased ITC's screening potential for analytical applications such as separation and detection.

BACKGROUND: Cancer immunotherapy involving natural killer (NK) cells has gained interest. Here we report two methods to obtain interleukin (IL)-15-activated NK cells for clinical use. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: IL-15-activated NK cell products were obtained after 1) enrichment from healthy haploidentical donors' peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) collected by nonmobilized apheresis by a two-step magnetic procedure, depletion of CD3+ cells followed by selection of CD56+ cells and ex vivo overnight stimulation with IL-15 (NKIL15); and 2) expansion using the K562-mb15-41BBL cell line (NKAE), from autologous PBMNCs from patients with multiple myeloma or expansion from healthy haploidentical PBMNCs obtained from whole blood using the same previous cell line. We analyzed the NK cell recovery and expansion, T cell depletion, phenotype, cytotoxicity, safety, and genomic stability of two good manufacturing practices (GMP)-grade IL-15-activated NK cell products. RESULTS: The number of NK cells obtained from NKIL15 cell and NKAE cell products was similar; however, there were significantly fewer T cells in the NKIL15 cell product. The haploidentical NKAE cell product contained more T cells than the autologous NKAE cell product. The surface expression of the activating receptors CD69, CD25, natural killer group-2 member D receptor, NKp44, NKp46, NKp30, and DNA accessory molecule 1 was up regulated in both NK cell products. NKIL15 cell and NKAE cell products had significantly higher lytic activity than unstimulated NK cells and showed no lytic activity against PBMNCs from healthy donors. No genetic alterations or potential oncogenic effects were found. CONCLUSION: Different GMP-grade procedures can be used to obtain large numbers of highly IL-15-activated NK cells with extremely low T cell content for clinical use.

This work reports an amperometric biosensor for the determination of miRNA-21, a relevant oncogene. The methodology involves a competitive DNA-target miRNA hybridization assay performed on the surface of magnetic microbeads (MBs) and amperometric transduction at screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs). The target miRNA competes with a synthetic fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-modified miRNA with an identical sequence for hybridization with a biotinylated and complementary DNA probe (b-Cp) immobilized on the surface of streptavidin-modified MBs (b-Cp-MBs). Upon labeling, the FITC-modified miRNA attached to the MBs with horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-conjugated anti-FITC Fab fragments and magnetic capturing of the MBs onto the working electrode surface of SPCEs. The cathodic current measured at -0.20 V (versus the Ag pseudo-reference electrode) was demonstrated to be inversely proportional to the concentration of the target miRNA. This convenient biosensing method provided a linear range between 0.7 and 10.0 nM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2 nM (5 fmol in 25 µL of sample) for the synthetic target miRNA without any amplification step. An acceptable selectivity towards single-base mismatched oligonucleotides, a high storage stability of the b-Cp-MBs, and usefulness for the accurate determination of miRNA-21 in raw total RNA (RNAt) extracted from breast cancer cells (MCF-7) were demonstrated.

Nanoparticles composed of Prussian Blue, PB, and the cyanometalate structural analogues, CuFe, FeCoFe, and FeCo, are examined as inorganic clusters that mimic the functions of peroxidases. PB acts as a superior catalyst for the oxidation of dopamine to aminochrome by H2O2. The oxidation of dopamine by H2O2 in the presence of PB is 6-fold faster than in the presence of CuFe. The cluster FeCo does not catalyze the oxidation of dopamine to aminochrome. The most efficient catalyst for the generation of chemiluminescence by the oxidation of luminol by H2O2 is, however, FeCo, and PB lacks any catalytic activity toward the generation of chemiluminescence. The order of catalyzed chemiluminescence generation is FeCo ≫ CuFe > FeCoFe. The clusters PB, CuFe, FeCoFe, and FeCo mimic the functions of NADH peroxidase. The catalyzed oxidation of NADH by H2O2 to form NAD+ follows the order PB ≫ CuFe ∼ FeCoFe, FeCo. The efficient generation of chemiluminescence by the FeCo-catalyzed oxidation of luminol by H2O2 is used to develop a glucose sensor. The aerobic oxidation of glucose in the presence of glucose oxidase, GOx, yields gluconic acid and H2O2. The chemiluminescence intensities formed by the GOx-generated H2O2 relate to the concentration of glucose, thus providing a quantitative readout signal for the concentrations of glucose.
