RESUMO
Significant recovery after treatment with the whole plant slurry of A.longifolia Nees. was observed in plasma AST, ALT and cholesterol levels in CCl4 induced hepatotoxic rats. This was amply supported by electron micrographs, which indicated normalization of cytoarchitecture of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. The results suggest that the slurry of the plant is useful as a liver tonic.

A simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of nylidrin hydrochloride, isoxsuprine hydrochloride and salbutamol sulphate is described, based on measurement of the orangeyellow species produced when the drugs are coupled with diazotized benzocaine (p-aminoethyl benzoate) in trimethylamine medium. The method is applicable over the range 1-12 mug ml for isoxsuprine hydrochloride and nylidrin hydrochloride and 1-8 mug ml for salbutamol sulphate. The method is a modification of the Bratton-Marshall reaction and is simple, reproducible, accurate and more sensitive than those cited in the literature.
RESUMO
A simple extractive photometric method for the determination of tetramisole hydrochloride in pharmaceutical preparations is described. The method uses the formation of coloured complexes of the drug with reagents such as Solochrome Dark Blue, Solochrome Black T, Bromocresol Purple, Bromothymol Blue, Bromophenol Blue and Bromocresol Green in an acidic buffer. The ion-pair complexes formed are quantitatively extracted into chloroform under the experimental conditions.
RESUMO
Synthetic gugulsterones when administered to rats for a period of 3 weeks in dose of 5.0 mg/kg body weight/day caused a reduction in levels of total cholesterol by 30%, LDL-chol. by 40%, Tg by 40%. VLDL-chol. by 40% and HDL-chol. by 35%. The drug when administered to rats for a period of 16 weeks with increasing dose upto 1150 mg/kg body weight/day, reduced VLDL-chol. and Tg. by 55% and 50% respectively (P < 0.001) and LDL-chol by 33% (P < 0.05), whereas HDL-chol. was increased by 25% (P < 0.001). Histopathological studies on liver, spleen, intestine, lung, kidney, stomach and adrenal gland revealed drug related changes in a few animals upon exposure to high dose of the drug.

A simple colorimetric method of estimation of thiamine from various pharmaceutical formulations is reported. Thiamine forms a yellow coloured complex with para-aminophenol in ammonia medium. The complex is extracted in chloroform (lambda max. 430 nm). The Beer's law is obeyed from 1.5 to 10 micrograms/ml.

A method is described for the determination of ethanol in the presence of methanol without pre-separation. The sample is oxidized to give acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. 2-Thiobarbituric acid reagent is added and selectively forms a pink adduct with acetaldehyde, but not with formaldehyde. The method is sensitive, obeys Beer's law in the concentration range 18-80 microgram/mL, and has an advantage over other methods because it does not detect any "apparent normal value" of alcohol in blood.

A simple colorimetric method is described for the determination of pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6). The method is based on the measurement of an orange species formed when pyridoxine hydrochloride is treated with diazotized dapsone and sulfanilamide in a mixture of trichloroacetic acid and sulfuric acid at room temperature, followed by treatment with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. Compounds such as thiamine hydrochloride, cyanocobalamin, and common excipients such as starch and talc which are present in various formulations with pyridoxine hydrochloride do not interfere in the reaction. Statistical validation showed that the method was highly precise and accurate. Results agree well with those obtained by other methods reported in the literature.

A simple colorimetric method is described for the determination of terbutaline sulfate. The method is based on measurement of a colored species formed when terbutaline sulfate is treated with diazotized dapsone and p-nitroaniline at room temperature. Compounds such as starch, talc, and common excipients do not interfere in the reaction. Statistical validation showed that the method was highly precise and accurate. The results agree well with those obtained by other methods reported in the literature.

A simple colorimetric method is described for the determination of thiamine hydrochloride (vitamin B1) in dosage forms. The method is based on measurement of a yellow complex formed when thiamine HCl is treated with p-methylaminophenol sulfate (Metol) under alkaline conditions. Compounds such as vitamins A, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, and niacinamide, citric acid, liquid glucose, calcium pantothenate, biotin, liver extract, and folic acid do not interfere in the reaction. Extracting the complex into chloroform before quantitation enhances the stability of the reaction product and removes interference of water-soluble colored constituents in syrup samples. Statistical validation shows that the method is precise and accurate. Results agree well with those obtained by other methods in the literature.

A simple gas chromatographic method is described for the determination of histapyrrodine HCl in marketed formulations. Chlorpheniramine maleate is used as the internal standard. The amount of histapyrrodine HCl found by the proposed method averaged 19.91 mg/tablet, compared with the label claim of 20 mg/tablet. The method was statistically evaluated for accuracy and precision.

A simple colorimetric method is described for the determination of metaproterenol sulfate (orciprenaline sulfate). The method is based on measurement of a colored species formed when metaproterenol sulfate is treated with diazotized dapsone, p-nitroaniline, or benzocaine at room temperature, followed by treatment with an aqueous solution of trimethylamine in the case of benzocaine. Compounds such as starch, talc, and common excipients do not interfere in the reaction. Statistical validation showed that the method was precise and accurate. The results agree well with those obtained by other methods reported in the literature.
