RESUMO

Materials that can be switched between low and high thermal conductivity states would advance the control and conversion of thermal energy. Employing in situ time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) and in situ synchrotron X-ray scattering, we report a reversible, light-responsive azobenzene polymer that switches between high (0.35 W m-1 K-1) and low thermal conductivity (0.10 W m-1 K-1) states. This threefold change in the thermal conductivity is achieved by modulation of chain alignment resulted from the conformational transition between planar (trans) and nonplanar (cis) azobenzene groups under UV and green light illumination. This conformational transition leads to changes in the π-π stacking geometry and drives the crystal-to-liquid transition, which is fully reversible and occurs on a time scale of tens of seconds at room temperature. This result demonstrates an effective control of the thermophysical properties of polymers by modulating interchain π-π networks by light.

RESUMO

Harvesting waste heat with temperatures lower than 100 °C can improve the system efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, yet it has been a longstanding and challenging task. Electrochemical methods for harvesting low-grade heat have aroused research interest in recent years due to the relatively high effective temperature coefficient of the electrolytes (>1 mV K-1) compared with the thermopower of traditional thermoelectric devices. Compared with other electrochemical devices such as the temperature-variation based thermally regenerative electrochemical cycle and temperature-difference based thermogalvanic cells, the thermally regenerative electrochemically cycled flow battery (TREC-FB) has the advantages of providing a continuous power output, decoupling the heat source and heat sink, and recuperating heat, and compatible with stacking for scaling up. However, the TREC-FB suffers from the issue of stable operation due to the challenge of pH matching between catholyte and anolyte solutions with desirable temperature coefficients. In this work, we demonstrate a pH-neutral TREC-FB based on KI/KI3 and K3Fe(CN)6/K4Fe(CN)6 as the catholyte and anolyte, respectively, with a cell temperature coefficient of 1.9 mV K-1 and a power density of 9 µW cm-2. This work also presents a comprehensive model with a coupled analysis of mass transfer and reaction kinetics in a porous electrode that can accurately capture the flow rate dependence of the power density and energy conversion efficiency. We estimate that the efficiency of the pH-neutral TREC-FB can reach nearly 9% of the Carnot efficiency at the maximum power output with a temperature difference of 37 K. Via analysis, we identify that the mass transfer overpotential inside the porous electrode and the resistance of the ion exchange membrane are the two major factors limiting the efficiency and power density, pointing to directions for future improvements.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The scope of healthcare has been expanding from caring for sick people to keeping people from becoming sick, and telemedicine will play a significant role in this new healthcare paradigm. This study investigated consumer preferences and willingness to pay for attributes of telemedicine services in South Korea. A market simulation was conducted to examine the market shares of alternative services and their relationships to the perceived usefulness of service types and preferred device types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a conjoint survey, we collected data on consumer preferences for six telemedicine service attributes. Data analysis used the Bayesian mixed logit model. The market simulation estimated the probabilities of a specific service alternative being chosen using estimated model coefficients. RESULTS: Wearable devices were the most preferred, followed by smart-home and smartphone devices. Consumers perceived managing blood glucose to be the most useful telemedicine service, followed by monitoring oxygen saturation and blood pressure. The market simulation indicated that consumer preferences for device types were associated with the types of chronic diseases for which management through telemedicine services is perceived to be useful. CONCLUSIONS: As the focus of healthcare moves from treating patients to keeping individuals healthy, a key factor for the successful deployment of telemedicine services is understanding consumer perceptions and attitudes. The results of this study revealed the dynamics of consumer preferences with regard to service attributes.

RESUMO

In a preliminary study, live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) Lactobacillus plantarum LC27 and Bifidobacterium longum LC67 inhibited the secretion of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) in LPS-stimulated HepG2 cells, while Escherichia coli K1 (Ec) increased ALT and ALT secretion. Therefore, we examined the effects of LC27 and LC67 on LPS-induced liver injury and fibrosis in mice and the correlation between their biomarkers in cell and animal experiments. Orally administered LC27 or LC67 significantly decreased blood ALT, AST, γ-glutamyl transferase (γGTP), TNF-α, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TCh), total bile acid, and LPS levels, liver TNF-α, toll-like receptor-4 gene (Tlr4), α-smooth muscle actin (αSMA), and collagen-1 expression and αSMA+GFAP+ and NF-κB+F4/80+ cell populations, and colonic Tlr4, TNF-α, and IL-6 expression and NF-κB-positive cell population in LPS-treated mice. Furthermore, they increased AMPKa phosphorylation in the liver and colon. However, Ec increased the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 in blood, liver, and colon. The suppression of LPS-stimulated ALT and AST secretion in HepG2 cells by LBPs was positively correlated with their ameliorating effects on LPS-induced blood γGTP, ALT, and AST levels and liver αSMA and collagen-1 expression in mice. Based on these findings, LC27 and LC67 may improve liver injury and fibrosis by regulating NF-κB and AMPK signaling pathway and a protocol that can assay the inhibitory activity of LBPs on LPS-induced ALT and AST secretion in HepG2 may be useful for guessing their antihepatitic effects in the in vivo experiments.

RESUMO

Polymeric thermal switches that can reversibly tune and significantly enhance their thermal conductivities are desirable for diverse applications in electronics, aerospace, automotives, and medicine; however, they are rarely achieved. Here, we report a polymer-based thermal switch consisting of an end-linked star-shaped thermoset with two independent thermal conductivity tuning mechanisms-strain and temperature modulation-that rapidly, reversibly, and cyclically modulate thermal conductivity. The end-linked star-shaped thermoset exhibits a strain-modulated thermal conductivity enhancement up to 11.5 at a fixed temperature of 60 °C (increasing from 0.15 to 2.1 W m-1 K-1). Additionally, it demonstrates a temperature-modulated thermal conductivity tuning ratio up to 2.3 at a fixed stretch of 2.5 (increasing from 0.17 to 0.39 W m-1 K-1). When combined, these two effects collectively enable the end-linked star-shaped thermoset to achieve a thermal conductivity tuning ratio up to 14.2. Moreover, the end-linked star-shaped thermoset demonstrates reversible tuning for over 1000 cycles. The reversible two-way tuning of thermal conductivity is attributed to the synergy of aligned amorphous chains, oriented crystalline domains, and increased crystallinity by elastically deforming the end-linked star-shaped thermoset.

RESUMO

Estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) are essential sex steroid hormones that play critical roles in the pituitary gland and uterus. Recently, nesfatin-1, a polypeptide hormone that regulates appetite and energy homeostasis in the hypothalamus, was found to be expressed in the pituitary gland and uterus. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between these two steroid hormones and the expression and function of nesfatin-1 in the pituitary gland and uterus using GH3 cells, a lacto-somatotroph cell line, and THESC cells, an endometrial stromal cell line. First, we verified the presence of nesfatin-1 and nesfatin-1 binding sites in GH3 and THESC cells. E2 increased the mRNA expression of NUCB2, the gene encoding the nesfatin-1 protein, in GH3 cells, while P4 had no significant effect. In THESC cells, NUCB2 mRNA expression was decreased by E2 but increased by P4. In addition, nesfatin-1 significantly increased growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) mRNA expression in GH3 cells, and E2 enhanced this effect. In THESC cells, nesfatin-1 significantly increased the mRNA expression of insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1 (IGFBP1) and PRL, which are decidualization marker genes, and P4 further enhanced this effect. These results suggest that nesfatin-1 may act as a local regulator of GH and PRL production in the pituitary gland and decidualization in the uterus, modulating its effects in response to E2 and P4.

RESUMO

In this study, we present a novel performance-enhancing binarized neural network model called PresB-Net: Parametric Binarized Neural Network. A binarized neural network (BNN) model can achieve fast output computation with low hardware costs by using binarized weights and features. However, performance degradation is the most critical problem in BNN models. Our PresB-Net combines several state-of-the-art BNN structures including the learnable activation with additional trainable parameters and shuffled grouped convolution. Notably, we propose a new normalization approach, which reduces the imbalance between the shuffled groups occurring in shuffled grouped convolutions. Besides, the proposed normalization approach helps gradient convergence so that the unstableness of the learning can be amortized when applying the learnable activation. Our novel BNN model enhances the classification performance compared with other existing BNN models. Notably, the proposed PresB-Net-18 achieves 73.84% Top-1 inference accuracy for the CIFAR-100 dataset, outperforming other existing counterparts.

RESUMO

In most developed countries, such as the USA, the E.U., and East Asia, the importance of public infrastructure asset management has been stressed for a long time. Among the various types of public infrastructure, sewerage systems are one of the most cost-intensive facilities to manage. Sewerage systems are considered highly difficult to manage due to the undetermined level of service needed, different standards of user satisfaction, and the large gap of service understanding between experts and users. To address these issues, this study aims to define the appropriate target level of service improvement by combining consumers' expected level of service and complaint data. In this study, the case of the inland flood management project in South Korea is investigated because of the global trend of increasing flood damage. The complaint data represent the frequency of flood damage in the area. Using the contingent valuation method, we found that people want to use 25% of their current monthly sewage bill on the management project. In addition, the results of this study demonstrate that people prefer to deal with the problems caused by old service infrastructure when it can be handled at a lower cost during early stages.

RESUMO

As the battle with COVID-19 continues, an Infodemic problem has been raised. Even though the distribution of false news in national disaster situations has been reported for a long time, little attention has been given to the quantitative research of the fake news problem from the audience's perspective. This study, therefore, aims to estimate how much tax taxpayers would gladly pay for a virtual public-run fact-checking system. Using a one-and-one-half bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation method, a survey was conducted on 525 respondents in Korea, and the spike model was applied to distinguish zero willingness-to-pay (WTP). The results show that a household's WTP for the public fact-checking system is 10,652 KRW (9 USD), on average, in the form of income tax for five years. Given the amount is a regular payment in perpetuity, the total WTP is estimated at 23 billion KRW ($196 M) every year. The result also shows that an individual's WTP increases as his or her psychological damage caused by fake news is high, as well as his or her high reliance on news in a disaster situation.

RESUMO

Second sound refers to the phenomenon of heat propagation as temperature waves in the phonon hydrodynamic transport regime. We directly observe second sound in graphite at temperatures of over 200 K using a sub-picosecond transient grating technique. The experimentally determined dispersion relation of the thermal-wave velocity increases with decreasing grating period, consistent with first-principles-based solution of the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation. Through simulation, we reveal this increase as a result of thermal zero sound-the thermal waves due to ballistic phonons. Our experimental findings are well explained with the interplay among three groups of phonons: ballistic, diffusive, and hydrodynamic phonons. Our ab initio calculations further predict a large isotope effect on the properties of thermal waves and the existence of second sound at room temperature in isotopically pure graphite.

RESUMO

Semiconductors with high thermal conductivity and electron-hole mobility are of great importance for electronic and photonic devices as well as for fundamental studies. Among the ultrahigh-thermal conductivity materials, cubic boron arsenide (c-BAs) is predicted to exhibit simultaneously high electron and hole mobilities of >1000 centimeters squared per volt per second. Using the optical transient grating technique, we experimentally measured thermal conductivity of 1200 watts per meter per kelvin and ambipolar mobility of 1600 centimeters squared per volt per second at the same locations on c-BAs samples at room temperature despite spatial variations. Ab initio calculations show that lowering ionized and neutral impurity concentrations is key to achieving high mobility and high thermal conductivity, respectively. The high ambipolar mobilities combined with the ultrahigh thermal conductivity make c-BAs a promising candidate for next-generation electronics.

RESUMO

The contingent valuation method (CVM) is used to measure non-market value. However, the CVM evaluates values using the subjective survey responses of consumers. Therefore, to analyze non-market value, we improve an integrated analysis module, which is divided into the following three parts: (1) a dose-response function that describes the relationship between noise exposure and annoyance, (2) the calculation of willingness to pay to reduce the noise level from the spike model in the CVM analysis, and (3) the calculation of the non-market value-related benefits by linking steps 1 and 2 above. We use the proposed integrated analysis module to analyze the value of noise reduction in South Korea. From this integrated analysis module, we find that a 1 dB reduction in living noise generated from a construction site has a value from 4578 KRW (USD$3.94) to 5794 KRW (USD$4.99) and that this value varies depending on the noise exposure level. The integrated analysis module can thus be used to improve noise policies in South Korea.

RESUMO

Securing a moderate level of social acceptance for obnoxious facilities, public facilities that have negative effects, such as odors, noise, or other disruptions, is critical to infrastructure plans. For wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), also obnoxious facilities, upgrading and expanding the capacity of existing WWTP, are more important than the construction of new plants, in some regions. This study analyzes and compares the social acceptance of different types of WWTP upgrades and capacity expansion projects. Contingent valuation method is used to elicit South Korean households' willingness to pay (WTP) for preventing the expansion of a WWTP. The aggregated WTP is interpreted from the perspective of social conflict costs. The results show that the annual mean WTP of South Korean households to prevent WWTP expansion ranges from KRW 32,058 (US $27.61) to KRW 45,793 (US $39.44) depending on spatial location, which implies that the social conflict costs for the WWTP expansion in South Korea are considerable. It is also found that an underground WWTP at current site is a best alternative to lower the social conflict costs; it is even better than relocation an existing WWTP to another area. Several related policy implications are provided based on the analysis results.

RESUMO

A sewage treatment plant is considered an undesirable facility because of public concerns about odor, hygiene, and lowered house prices in the neighborhood. In South Korea, many aging sewage treatment plants need to be upgraded because they show inadequate performance on the removal of major pollutants. However, issues involved in such upgrades include social conflicts between the local government and residents, and economic feasibility. Examinations of social acceptability that include economic analyses are needed in order to fulfill social demand for upgrading the sewage treatment plants while simultaneously guaranteeing efficiency and minimizing social costs. This study investigates the social benefits of expanding and modernizing sewage treatment plants in South Korea using the contingent valuation method. Results show that Korean households, on average, are willing to pay 36,340 KRW (33.25 USD) per year for upgrading sewage treatment plants. About 47.73% of the project costs can be covered by the social benefits the Korean households enjoy. This study suggests that the Korean government needs to consider estimated social benefits in determining the scale and timeline of upgrade projects. The results of this study may help with stable implementation of upgrade projects for sewage treatment plants.

RESUMO

The price of recyclable waste has declined, and China is refusing solid waste imports. As a result, recycling companies in South Korea are refusing to collect recyclable waste, which caused a solid waste management crisis in April 2018. Due to this crisis, many people are unable to discard their recyclable waste. This study aims to assess the economic value of a sustainable recycling and waste management policy to solve the waste management crisis. The analysis in this study is divided into two parts: The first part estimates the inconvenience costs to residents using a contingent valuation method, whereas the second part analyzes the preferences for a new policy using a mixed logit model with a choice experiment. The results show that mean willingness to pay (WTP) per household is 41,234 (USD 36.96) KRW/year; the total WTP would be able to increase the total disposal capacity by up to 4.51%. In addition, at an adequate price level for the policy alternative, the policy acceptance rate suggests that the price of biodegradable volume-rate disposal bags should increase by no more than KRW 66 (USD 0.06) per bag. This study provides guidance to policy makers who wish to consider both validity and acceptability.

RESUMO

NUCB2/nesfatin-1 known to regulate appetite and energy homeostasis is expressed not only in the hypothalamus, but also in various organs and tissues. Our previous reports also demonstrated that NUCB2/nesfatin-1 was expressed in the reproductive organs, including the ovaries, uterus, and testes of mice. However, it is yet known whether NUCB2/nesfatin-1 is expressed in the oviduct and how its expression is regulated. Therefore, we investigated the expression of NUCB2/nesfatin-1 in the oviduct and its expression is regulated by gonadotropin. Immunohistochemical staining results showed that nesfatin-1 protein was localized in epithelial cells of the oviduct. As a result of quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and Western blot, NUCB2/nesfatin-1 was detected strongly in the oviducts. During the estrus cycle, NUCB2/nesfatin-1 expression in the oviducts was markedly higher in the proestrus stage than in other estrus stages. In order to elucidate whether the expression of NUCB2 mRNA is controlled by the gonadotropins, we injected PMSG and hCG and measured NUCB2 mRNA level in the oviduct after injection. Its level was increased in the oviduct after PMSG injection, but no significant change after hCG injection. In addition, NUCB2 mRNA levels were markedly reduced after ovariectomy, while recovered after 17ß-estradiol (E2) injection, but not by progesterone (P4). This study demonstrated that NUCB2/nesfatin-1 is highly expressed in the oviduct of mouse and its expression is regulated by E2 secreted by the ovaries. These results suggest that NUCB2/nesfatin-1 expressed by the oviduct may affect the function of the oviduct regulated by the ovaries.

RESUMO

Measuring anisotropic thermal conductivity has always been a challenging task in thermal metrology. Although recent developments of pump-probe thermoreflectance techniques such as variable spot sizes, offset pump-probe beams, and elliptical beams have enabled the measurement of anisotropic thermal conductivity, a metal film transducer enabled for the absorption of the modulated pump laser beam and the detection of the thermoreflectance signal. However, the existence of the transducer would cause in-plane heat spreading, suppressing the measurement sensitivity to the in-plane thermal conductivity. In addition, the transducer film also adds complexity to data processing, since it requires careful calibration or fitting to determine extra parameters such as the film thickness and conductivity, and interface conductance between the transducer and the sample. In this work, we discussed the methodology for measuring in-plane thermal conductivity of layered semiconductors and semimetals without any transducer layer. We show that the removal of transducer results in the dominantly large sensitivity to in-plane thermal conductivity compared with other parameters, such as cross-plane thermal conductivity and the absorption depth of the laser beams. Transducerless frequency-domain thermoreflectance (FDTR) measurements are performed on three reference layered-materials, highly ordered pyrolytic graphite, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) and demonstrated using the analytical thermal model that the measured in-plane thermal conductivity showed much-improved accuracy compared with conventional FDTR measurement with a transducer.

RESUMO

Environmental noise pollution is an important social problem. Noise is known to have an adverse effect on human emotions and bodies. However, the methodology of previous studies did not consider selection bias in eliminating participants during the screening process. Therefore, for this study, we propose a framework that combines propensity score matching with a generalized additive model to reduce that sampling problem. Within this framework, we use health data from the National Health Insurance Service and noise data from the National Noise Information System in Korea. Using the proposed framework and data set, we analyze the effects of noise on cardiocerebrovascular disease. Our results show that, when daytime noise increases by 1 A-weighted decibel (dB(A)), cerebrovascular disease increases by 0.66%, hypertension increases by 0.17%, and heart disease increases by 0.38%. Moreover, we conducted a scenario analysis to investigate the effects of noise reduction policies. When noise levels are reduced to meet regulatory targets, cerebrovascular diseases decrease by 2077 per million people, high blood pressure decreases by 5705 per million people, and heart disease decreases by 1151 per million people. Our results thus provide information about noise exposure-response functions in Korea that could be used to establish noise reduction policies.

RESUMO

Noise is the most frequently encountered type of environmental pollution in everyday life and has a direct negative effect on humans. Individuals who are constantly exposed to noise tend to have a high incidence of cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Noise sources range from construction sites to political rallies and assemblies, but traffic is one of the most long-lasting and chronic sources of noise. Previously, researchers have conducted valuations of road traffic noise reduction, but they did not consider residents' annoyance levels in response to traffic noise. However, individuals' annoyance levels affect the economic value of noise reduction policies and thus must be considered to obtain an accurate estimate. Therefore, this study investigated residents' willingness to pay for traffic noise reduction depending on their annoyance level. We used the contingent valuation method and a survey to analyze how much 1022 respondents in Korea were willing to pay for noise reduction. We found that people who were annoyed and extremely annoyed by noise had a willingness to pay KRW 8422 (US $7.55) and KRW 9848 (US $8.83) annually per household, respectively, to reduce their annoyance level to zero. In addition, we determined the economic benefits of noise reduction policies using the respondents' willingness to pay to reduce noise by 1 dB(A), which totaled KRW 3.28 billion (US $2.91 million) per year. The results of this study provide estimates of the annual benefits of traffic noise reduction considering residents' annoyance level.

RESUMO

A gradual increase in the importance of water environment infrastructure has provided an opportunity to bring in various initiatives for the supply of sewage. Such initiatives include the dissemination of public sewage systems and the use of subcontractors in management of sewage systems. However, despite the existence of various methods to increase the rate of sewage supply, there are few studies analyzing each alternative in terms of social, economic, and environmental aspects. Therefore, we investigated investment directions for water environment infrastructure facilities related to the supply of sewage treatment systems in rural areas through cost-benefit analysis. We analyzed the economic costs and social benefits of two sewage treatment systems: installation of a public sewage treatment system and utilization of a private sewage treatment system via service contract. When we considered only economic costs and benefits, the benefit-cost ratio for the public system (0.02) was smaller than that for the private system (0.264). However, the results of the two alternatives changed when we considered the social benefits to people in urban areas from establishment of public sewage treatment systems in rural areas. To be specific, by considering the social benefits for non-rural areas, this study found that the benefit-cost ratio for the public system increased to 0.267, which was higher than the ratio for the private system. Based on these results, we propose appropriate operations and management plans for supplying sewage treatment systems to rural areas. Further, this study indicates that policymakers who conduct cost-benefit analyses of infrastructure related to water environments should consider all social, environmental, and economic factors that can alter the analysis results.
