RESUMO

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has an important role in energy balance. It suppresses food intake, reduces hepatic glucose production and converts white fat into brown fat in adipose tissue, leading to energy dissipation, lowered blood glucose and a lean phenotype. Studies have shown that the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) Val66Met within BDNF may be associated with obesity, insulin sensitivity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and dyslipidemia. The objective of the study was to investigate the association of the Val66Met polymorphism with body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose levels and lipid profile in Serbian adolescents. The study included 308 randomly selected healthy adolescents, 153 (49.68%) boys and 155 girls (50.32%), 15 years of age. Data including age, gender, height, weight, lipid profile and fasting glucose were recorded. Genotyping was performed by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. No association of this polymorphism was found with BMI and lipid profile. However, significant association was observed between this polymorphism and fasting blood glucose (FBG). Carriers of a Val/Val genotype had significantly higher mean values of fasting glucose level compared to carriers of Val/ Met and Met/Met genotypes (p = 0.01). To confirm these results multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Body mass index and gender were taken as covariates. Carriers of the Val/Val genotype had significantly higher levels of FBG (ß = -0.152, p = 0.02). A statistically significant association between BMI and glucose level was also observed (ß = 0.124,p = 0.033). This polymorphism could be associated with fasting glucose level in Serbian adolescents, thus further research would be of great interest to validate these results.

RESUMO

Avian gastric yeast (Macrorhabdus ornithogaster) is a microorganism that infects aviary birds worldwide, both captive and wild. A total number of 352 birds, belonging to 18 avian species, were examined from 2019 to 2022 for M. ornithogaster, using fecal smears of live birds or cytological samples of the proventriculus taken at necropsy. These cytological samples were taken from birds that died from different causes. Some of the birds exhibited symptoms such as lethargy, regurgitation, weight loss and anorexia. Faecal samples were collected from all the birds and analysed for gastric yeast using a direct smear and Gram-staining method. The microorganism was diagnosed most frequently in budgerigars (55.5%), the African gray parrot (33.3%), and nymphs (34.3%). The prevalence of M. ornithogaster in canaries was 10%. The infection was detected in 31% of the examined birds, which shows that the occurrence of M. ornithogaster in exotic birds is common. No clinical signs were observed in the vast majority of birds that tested positive for gastric yeast.

RESUMO

The single pass paired dilution technique was used to measure the uptake of nucleosides across the basolateral face of the isolated in situ perfused sheep choroid plexus (CP). The uptake of labelled adenosine and guanosine into the CP was large (approximately 35%) whereas that of thymidine was less (approximately 15%). The addition of 0.5 mM unlabelled adenosine to the perfusate inhibited the uptake of labelled adenosine by 66%, guanosine by 100% and that of thymidine by 50%, whereas the addition of 0.5 mM unlabelled thymidine caused complete self-inhibition. The backflux of adenosine was very small which may indicate a high rate of cellular metabolism or a flux into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The addition of 0.5 mM unlabelled adenosine did not alter the backflux of adenosine, but increased that of guanosine and thymidine. The entry of radioactivity derived from adenosine across the apical side of the CP cells into the newly formed CSF was determined as a 'CSF uptake index' relative to [14C]butanol and found to be about 25%; however, HPLC analysis revealed that the majority of this activity was hypoxanthine, and not adenosine. The complete inhibition of nitric oxide synthase caused a significant reduction in adenosine uptake into the CP and an increase in backflux for this molecule. It would appear that the uptake for adenosine by the CP is governed by the rate of cellular metabolism and not by the rate of transport into the cells of the choroid plexus whereas for guanosine and thymidine, transport is of greater importance.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to examine the attitudes towards food and eating, body image, mood, feelings and relationships in family and peer group in female adolescents with varying weight status in an attempt to explore whether a relationship between emotional difficulties and body weight could be found. The data on use of 81 item measure of emotional difficulties and behavioural symptoms related to eating disorders and dieting in female adolescents aged 15 to 19 years and group of eating disorder patients are reported. The findings suggest that the adolescents who by self-reported weight value appear to be relatively overweight and eating disorder patients score significantly higher on a body dissatisfaction subscale of the applied questionnaire than normal weight and underweight adolescents. Only in the clinical sample of eating disorder patients, however, difficulties in dealing with depressive feelings and fear of poor impulse control were present.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to find out in what way adolescents assess their families and family functioning. An 34-item scale in self-report format was administered to 154 high school students and 34 patients in diagnostic procedure before entering psychotherapy in order to explore basic elements of family functioning (structure, affect, communication; behaviour control, ethic values transmission, intimacy and idealization, and elements of family dysfunction). The results showed that adolescents in general assessed their families as growth and individuation supportive. The adolescents in the clinical sample presented more dissatisfaction with their families and elements of family dysfunctions were more emphasized.

RESUMO

The paper presents the current state of child and adolescent psychiatry in the Republic of Croatia. Thirty-seven psychiatrists practicing child and adolescent psychiatry in the entire Republic point to the lack of staff in this subspecialty profession. The subspecialty was approved by the Ministry of Health in 1994. The city of Zagreb satisfies the criteria of some European countries as regards the number of staff, but not as regards the organization of the service for child and adolescent psychiatry (e.g. lack of university hospital department as the base for medical teaching and further specialist training). In other and larger centers in the Republic the situation is well below the criteria achieved in this profession, particularly in the countries of the European Union and the USA. Still, psychiatric services in some towns tend to support the development of child and adolescent psychiatry in their environment by providing facilities and staff. There are still attempts, even in the health service itself, to overcome this lack of personnel and organization by transferring numerous cases from the domain of child and adolescent psychiatry to experts in other medical specialties or non-medical professionals, instead of improving the development of child and adolescent psychiatry. In some countries of the European Union and the USA it has already reached the monospecialty status, a tendency supported by the UEMS, which also makes efforts to coordinate programs of specialist training in the European countries. The described situation certainly has consequences in the of mental health care of children, adolescents and their families, because their treatment often begins only when a disorder has visibly developed. Its clinical manifestations can take very different forms.

RESUMO

During the summer 1991, the Ward of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Medical Headquarters, Republic of Croatia has been established as a direct reaction to the cruel war in Croatia. The aim of the Ward is to prevent mental disorders among the individuals participating in the war and among the population of Croatia. Special attention is given to the threatened groups. These are: injured patients, displaced persons, children who have lost one or both of its parents, members of families of persons who have been killed or injured and the others. Treatment doctrines have been provided as well. Besides, a regional psychiatric service which has been formed in accordance with the characteristics of this war which is carried out without a known front, mobile psychiatric groups have also been established. They are made up of volunteers. Particular attention has been directed toward the education and publishing. The first Croatian war psychiatry entitled "Introduction into the War Psychiatry" is going to be published very soon. A program of the so-called veterans hospital has been worked out as well.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess how war psychotrauma, refugee status and other factors relate to self-image. Psychotherapeutic-psychiatric interview, the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire (OSIQ), questionnaires for measuring war stressors, posttraumatic stress reactions (PTS-reactions), depression and general data were administered. A total of 322 adolescents from Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia were included in the study. In 60.32% of the examinees, more than four war stressors were encountered. In 13.68% of the examinees, high PTS-reactions occurred. The refugees had nearly four times higher odds (aOR=3.66; 95% CI=1.63-8.2; p<0.01) of having a higher Offer score for the sexual attitudes subscale. Lower war stress had 0.28 times lower odds (aOR=0.28; 95% CI=0.11-0.71; p<0.01) of having a higher Offer score for the sexual attitudes subscale. More severe PTS-reactions had six times higher odds (aOR=6.15; 95% CI=1.7-22.2; p<0.01) of reaching a higher Offer score for the emotional tone subscale. War psychotrauma and refugee status are related to poorer adjustment only in some of the OSIQ subscales. Practical measures of joined sexually preventive/therapeutic activities are proposed, as well as educational and preventive/therapeutic psychotrauma models.

RESUMO

This study examines affective and behavioral symptomatology in two groups of school-age children who were traumatized to different degrees during the war in Croatia (N = 1034). Six self-reported questionnaires were used to assess the following: number and type of war experiences, PTSD symptoms, anxiety, depression, psychosomatic symptoms, and psychosocial adaptation. Canonical discriminant analysis yielded a significant discriminant function that indicates moderate differentiation between the two groups of children according to the assessed symptoms. The results of a 2 x 2 x 2 ANOVAs (gender x age x level of traumatization) indicate that the children's reactions to war traumata varied in respect to all factors, as well as their interaction. The results indicate that gender differences are more prominent in older children. Older girls report more posttraumatic stress reactions, anxiety and depression, but at the same time seem better adapted than boys. Younger children, particularly those who survived more war even report more PTSD symptoms than older children.

RESUMO

This study investigates the transport of endogenous nucleosides and deoxynucleosides from the capillaries of the eye into the aqueous humour and the lens using the in situ vascular eye perfusion technique in the guinea-pig. The transport of [3H] adenosine and [3H] thymidine across the blood-aqueous barrier proved to be very rapid with a volume of distribution after 4 minutes perfusion reaching 11.9+/-3.0% and 9.93+/-1.1%, respectively. However, the transport of [3H] guanosine and [3H] cytidine was slower, with volumes of distribution reaching only 3.38+/-0.58% and 4.8+/-1.41%. The values for the entry of deoxyadenosine and deoxyguanosine were not significantly different from the values obtained for corresponding ribonucleosides (adenosine and guanosine) so that a change in the pentose sugar does not change the affinity of the nucleoside for the transport protein. Perfusion with a low sodium medium inhibited the transport of [3H] adenosine and [3H] thymidine into the aqueous humour. The presence of 800 nM NBTI also caused a decrease in adenosine transport into the aqueous humour, so that the volume of distribution after 2 minutes reached only 3.78+/-1.87%. These findings suggest that the transfer of adenosine across the blood-aqueous barrier has both concentrative and equilibrative components. The presence of 0.1 mM thymidine had no effect on the [3H] adenosine transport, whereas 0.1 mM of adenosine resulted in a marked decrease on the [3H] thymidine transport which suggests that the concentrative nucleotide transport is probably mediated by both cif and cit transport systems. The cellular uptake of nucleosides into the lens was very rapid and the volume of distribution of purine nucleosides was within the range of 30-50% whereas that for thymidine uptake was somewhat lower, reaching 20-30%. HPLC analysis of the eye structures in the guinea-pig showed that lens, vitreous body and the rest of the eye do not contain either free nucleosides or purine bases in detectable quantities, except for xanthine which was detected in aqueous humour at a concentration of 2.51+/-0.51 mM. However, serum of the anaesthetised guinea-pig did not contain xanthine in detectable amount so it seems that the metabolic degradation of the nucleosides in the guinea-pig eye progresses as far as xanthine, which is then accumulated in the aqueous humour.
