RESUMO

The oxygen sensors with limiting current derived from a dense diffusion barrier have an excellent advantage of detecting oxygen partial pressure by controlling the ratio of air and fuel in combustion environments. Therefore, AgNb1-xTixO3-δ (wherein x varies from 0.1 to 0.3) was prepared as such a dense diffusion barrier layer for sensor application. Among the investigated compositions as a new condensed barrier for the diffusion of sensors, AgNb1-xTixO3-δ (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) exhibits oxygen ionic conductivities from 1.37 × 10-4 to 5.78 × 10-3 S·cm-1 in the temperature range of 600-900 °C and outstanding stable electrochemical properties. Herein, we employ these novel materials as dense diffusion barriers and 8 mol % zirconia stabilized by yttria (8YSZ) as a solid-state electrolyte for the fabrication of the oxygen sensors with limiting current. We observed a direct connection between the limiting current and oxygen content within the interval of 0.5-5.0 mol % at 800 °C and a low working voltage. The increase of Ti-doping amount in AgNbO3 accelerates the sensing response to oxygen gas and promotes the service life of the sensor.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the effect of combined hematological and physical measurement indicators on the prognosis of patients undergoing surgery for gastric or colorectal cancer and to screen for the best prognostic indicators. INTRODUCTION: Gastric and colorectal cancer is a widespread health concern worldwide and one of the major contributors to cancer-related death. The hematological and physical measurement indicators have been shown to associate with the prognosis of patients undergoing surgery for gastric or colorectal cancer, respectively, but it is still unclear whether the combination of the two can reflect the prognosis more effectively. METHODS: Thirteen hematological indicators and 5 physical measurement indicators were selected in this study, and the most promising ones were screened using LASSO regression. Then, the best prognostic indicators were selected by time-ROC curves. Survival curves were constructed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the effects of hematological and physical measurement indicators on the prognosis of patients undergoing surgery for gastric or colorectal cancers were evaluated by Cox proportional risk regression analysis. In addition, the relationship between hematological and physical measurement indicators on secondary outcomes, including length of stay, hospitalization costs, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and patients' subjective global assessment scores (PGSGA), was explored. RESULTS: After initial screening, among the hematological indicators, the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) showed the highest mean area under the curve (AUC) values. Among body measures, calf circumference (CC) showed the highest mean AUC value. Further analyses showed that the combination of combined nutritional prognostic index (GNRI) and calf circumference (CC) (GNRI-CC) had the best performance in predicting the prognosis of patients undergoing surgery for gastric or colorectal cancers. Low GNRI, low CC, and low GNRI-low CC increased the risk of death by 44%, 48%, and 104%, respectively. Sensitivity analyses showed the same trend. In addition, low GNRI-low CC increased the risk of malnutrition by 17%. CONCLUSION: This study emphasizes that a combination of blood measures and body measures is essential to accurately assess the prognosis of patients undergoing surgery for gastric or colorectal cancers. The GNRI-CC is a good prognostic indicator and can also assess the risk of possible malnutrition.

Emerging urinary kidney safety biomarkers have been evaluated in recent years and have been shown to be superior to the serum parameters blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (sCr) for monitoring kidney injury in the proximal tubule. However, their potential application in differentiating the location of the initial kidney injury (eg, glomerulus vs tubule) has not been fully explored. Here, we assessed the performance of two algorithms that were constructed using either an empirical or a mathematical model to predict the site of kidney injury using a data set consisting of 22 rat kidney toxicity studies with known urine biomarker and histopathologic outcomes. Two kidney safety biomarkers used in both models, kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1) and albumin (ALB), were the best performers to differentiate glomerular injury from tubular injury. The performance of algorithms using these two biomarkers against the gold standard of kidney histopathologic examination showed high sensitivity in differentiating the location of the kidney damage to either the glomerulus or the proximal tubules. These data support the exploration of such an approach for use in clinical settings, leveraging urinary biomarker data to aid in the diagnosis of either glomerular or tubular injury where histopathologic assessments are not conducted.

In this study, we investigated the effects of Cu doping on the performance of CoFeSiB amorphous microwires as the core of a fluxgate magnetometer. The noise performance of fluxgate sensors primarily depends on the crystal structure of constituent materials. CoFeSiB amorphous microwires with varying Cu doping ratios were prepared using melt-extraction technology. The microstructure of microwire configurations was observed using transmission electron microscopy, and the growth of nanocrystalline was examined. Additionally, the magnetic performance of the microwire and the noise of the magnetic fluxgate sensors were tested to establish the relationship between Cu-doped CoFeSiB amorphous wires and sensor noise performance. The results indicated that Cu doping triggers a positive mixing enthalpy and the reduced difference in the atomic radius that enhances the degree of nanocrystalline formation within the system; differential scanning calorimetry analysis indicates that this is due to Cu doping reducing the glass formation capacity of the system. In addition, Cu doping affects the soft magnetic properties of amorphous microwires, with 1% low-doping samples exhibiting better soft magnetic properties. This phenomenon is likely the result of the interaction between nanocrystalline organization and magnetic domains. Furthermore, a Cu doping ratio of 1% yields the best noise performance, aligning with the trend observed in the material's magnetic properties. Therefore, to reduce the noise of the CoFeSiB amorphous wire sensor, the primary goal should be to reduce microscopic defects in amorphous alloys and enhance soft magnetic properties. Cu doping is a superior preparation method which facilitates control over preparation conditions, ensuring the formation of stable amorphous wires with consistent performance.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between muscle and prognosis, especially that between muscle distribution across different body parts, and the related prognosis is not well established. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between muscle distribution and all-cause and cause-specific mortality and their potential modifiers. DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study. C-index, IDI, and NRI were used to determine the best indicator of prognosis. COX regression analysis was performed to explore the relationship between variables and outcomes. Interaction and subgroup analyses were applied to identify the potential modifiers. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 5052 participants (weighted: 124,841,420) extracted from the NHANES 2003-2006 of median age 45 years and constituting 50.3% men were assessed. For validation, we included 3040 patients from the INSCOC cohort in China. MAIN MEASURES: Muscle mass and distribution. KEY RESULTS: COX regression analysis revealed that upper limbs (HR = 0.41, 95% CI 0.33-0.51), lower limbs (HR = 0.54, 95% CI 0.47-0.64), trunk (HR = 0.71, 95% CI, 0.59-0.85), gynoid (HR = 0.47, 95% CI 0.38-0.58), and total lean mass (HR = 0.55, 95% CI 0.45-0.66) were all associated with the better survival of participants (P trend < 0.001). The changes in the lean mass ratio of the upper and lower limbs and the lean mass ratio of the android and gynoid attenuated the protective effect of lean mass. Age and sex acted as potential modifiers, and the relationship between lean mass and the prognosis was more significant in men and middle-aged participants when compared to that in other age groups. Sensitive analyses depicted that despite lean mass having a long-term impact on prognosis (15 years), it has a more substantial effect on near-term survival (5 years). CONCLUSION: Muscle mass and its distribution affect the prognosis with a more significant impact on the near-term than that on the long-term prognosis. Age and sex acted as vital modifiers.

Nearly half of all Asian non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients harbour epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, and first-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are one of the first-line treatments that have improved the outcomes of these patients. Unfortunately, 20% of these patients can not benefit from the treatment. The basis of this primary resistance is poorly understood. Therefore, overcoming EGFR-TKI primary resistance and maintaining the efficacy of TKIs has become a key issue. ß-Elemene, a sesquiterpene compound extracted from Curcuma aromatica Salisb. (wenyujing), has shown potent antitumor effects. In this research, we found that ß-elemene combined with erlotinib enhanced the cytotoxicity of erlotinib to primary EGFR-TKI-resistant NSCLC cells with EGFR mutations and that ferroptosis was involved in the antitumor effect of the combination treatment. We found that lncRNA H19 was significantly downregulated in primary EGFR-TKI-resistant NSCLC cell lines and was upregulated by the combination treatment. Overexpression or knockdown of H19 conferred sensitivity or resistance to erlotinib, respectively, in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The high level of H19 enhanced the cytotoxicity of erlotinib by inducing ferroptosis. In conclusion, our data showed that ß-elemene combined with erlotinib could enhance sensitivity to EGFR-TKIs through induction of ferroptosis via H19 in primary EGFR-TKI-resistant lung cancer, providing a promising strategy to overcome EGFR-TKI resistance in NSCLC patients.

Activating mutations of the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene are associated with Parkinson disease (PD), prompting development of LRRK2 inhibitors as potential treatment for PD. However, kidney safety concerns have surfaced from LRRK2 knockout (KO) mice and rats and from repeat-dose studies in rodents administered LRRK2 inhibitors. To support drug development of this therapeutic target, we conducted a study of 26 weeks' duration in 2-month-old wild-type and LRRK2 KO Long-Evans Hooded rats to systematically examine the performance of urinary safety biomarkers and to characterize the nature of the morphological changes in the kidneys by light microscopy and by ultrastructural evaluation. Our data reveal the time course of early-onset albuminuria at 3 and 4 months in LRRK2 KO female and male rats, respectively. The increases in urine albumin were not accompanied by concurrent increases in serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, or renal safety biomarkers such as kidney injury molecule 1 or clusterin, although morphological alterations in both glomerular and tubular structure were identified by light and transmission electron microscopy at 8 months of age. Diet optimization with controlled food intake attenuated the progression of albuminuria and associated renal changes.

RESUMO

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have received enormous attention and the mechanism behind them has been investigated in depth. It has been found that some donor-acceptor (D-A) type TADF emitters could obviously exhibit dual stable conformations in the ground states and their distributions significantly affect the physical properties and device performances. Therefore, professional analysis and a summary of the relationship between molecular structures and performances are very important. In this review, we first summarize the mechanism and properties of TADF emitters with conformational isomerism. We also classify their recent progress according to their different applications, and provide an outlook on their perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: The C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index is a new index related to inflammation, immunity, and nutrition. We investigated whether it can predict the prognosis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and developed a prognostic model including CALLY index. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Data from patients with NSCLC who were followed up in the INSCOC database from May 2013 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Simple random sampling by splitting these patients into training (n = 1307) and validation cohorts (n = 557) resulted in a sample size ratio of 7:3. Using the results of COX regression analysis of the training cohort, a nomogram model for predicting 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS) was established and validated internally. The calibration and clinical decision curve were used to evaluate the prediction accuracy and clinical application ability of the nomogram and compared with the TNM staging system for lung cancer. RESULTS: Sex, TNM stage, surgical treatment, BMI, CALLY, and HGS were independent risk factors for the prognosis of NSCLC patients. The OS of NSCLC patients with a low CALLY index score was significantly worse than that of patients with a high CALLY index (P < 0.001). The CALLY-based nomogram had a good predictive prognostic power, with a C-index of 0.697. Compared with the traditional TNM staging system, our prognostic nomogram had better resolution and accuracy in predicting the 3-year and 5-year OS. Decision curve analysis showed that this prognostic model has a clinical application value. CONCLUSIONS: The CALLY index is a valuable biomarker for evaluating the prognosis of patients with lung cancer. The nomogram based on the CALLY index is highly effective in predicting OS in patients with NSCLC. The results of this study provide a reference tool for clinicians to guide the personalized treatment of patients with lung cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The dietary inflammatory index (DII) is associated with numerous chronic noncommunicable diseases. Previous studies have shown that the pro-inflammatory DII categories are associated with abdominal and simple obesity. However, the association between DII and mortality in patients with abdominal obesity and simple overweight or obesity remains unclear. METHODS: We used data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018. A DII >0 (positive DII) was defined as a pro-inflammatory diet. A restricted cubic spline curve was used to describe the trend between DII and all-cause mortality. We then examined the association between DII and all-cause mortality in different body types using a Cox regression analysis and investigated the differences between sexes. Finally, the mediating effects of systemic inflammation were explored. RESULTS: A pro-inflammatory diet increased all-cause mortality in adults with abdominal obesity (aHR: 1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11-1.54; p < 0.001) and with simple overweight or obesity (aHR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.11-1.53; p < 0.001). In addition, the most pro-inflammatory DII increased the risk of mortality by 43% (hazard ratio [HR]: Q4 vs. Q1 = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.14-1.79; p = 0.002; p for trend = 0.003) and 39% (HR: Q4 vs. Q1 = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.13-1.74; p = 0.003; p for trend = 0.009) in participants with abdominal obesity and with simple overweight or obesity, respectively. However, this association was not present in normal-sized participants. Compared with men, women resisted the effects of a pro-inflammatory diet. Mediation analysis showed that white blood cell and neutrophil were mediators of the association between DII and all-cause mortality (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: A pro-inflammatory diet is associated with all-cause mortality in adults with abdominal obesity and simple overweight or obesity, and this effect differs between men and women. Systemic inflammation may mediate the association between DII and all-cause mortality.

BACKGROUND: Living with a partner and separation is becoming more common among older people. Mortality disparities associated with marital status are significant in increasingly diverse aging populations. The link between marital status and all-cause mortality risk in older adults remains uncertain. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We included NHANES participants ≥ 60 years of age (data from 1999 to 2014). Data for mortality follow-up beginning from the commencement date of survey participation to the last day of December 2015. Univariate- and multivariate-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models for marital status were estimated, and the findings were presented as regression coefficients and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Kaplan-Meier curves were reported. RESULTS: Compared to never married individuals, the risk of all-cause mortality was 0.77 (0.50-1.18), 0.72 (0.56-0.93), 0.56 (0.36-0.88), and 0.84 (0.67-1.07) in those people living with a partner, married, separated, and divorced, respectively, after adjusting for demographics, socioeconomics, behavior, anthropometric variables, and medical history. The risk of all-cause mortality was 1.24 (0.97-1.59) in widowed participants. CONCLUSION: This population-based cohort study included a large sample size followed by long-term follow-up. The association between marriage, health, and reduced mortality in older individuals has been illustrated in this study. Being married or separated was associated with a lower risk of mortality.

BACKGROUND: As populations age, cancer burden becomes increasingly conspicuous. This study quantified the cancer burden of the elderly (≥ 60 years) in China, based on the China Cancer Registry Annual Report to provide epidemiological evidence for cancer prevention and control. METHODS: Data on cancer cases and deaths among the elderly aged ≥ 60 years were collected from the China Cancer Registry Annual Report, 2008-2019. Potential years of life lost (PYLL) and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) were calculated to analyze fatalities and the non-fatal burden. The time trend was analyzed using the Joinpoint model. RESULTS: From 2005 to 2016, the PYLL rate of cancer in the elderly was stable between 45.34‰ and 47.62‰, but the DALY rate for cancer decreased at an average annual rate of 1.18% (95% CI: 0.84-1.52%). The non-fatal cancer burden in the rural elderly was higher than that of the urban elderly. Lung, gastric, liver, esophageal, and colorectal cancers were the main cancers causing the cancer burden in the elderly, and accounted for 74.3% of DALYs. The DALY rate of lung cancer in females in the 60-64 age group increased (annual percentage change [APC] = 1.14%, 95% CI: 0.10-1.82%). Female breast cancer was one of the top five cancers in the 60-64 age group, with DALY rates that also increased (APC = 2.17%, 95% CI: 1.35-3.01%). With increasing age, the burden of liver cancer decreased, while that of colorectal cancer rose. CONCLUSIONS: From 2005 to 2016, the cancer burden in the elderly in China decreased, mainly reflected in the non-fatal burden. Female breast and liver cancer were a more serious burden in the younger elderly, while colorectal cancer burden was mainly observed in the older elderly.

RESUMO

The W-boson mass, which was recently measured at Fermilab with an unprecedented precision, suggests the presence of new multiplets beyond the standard model (SM). One of the minimal extensions of the SM is to introduce an additional scalar doublet in which the non-SM scalars can enhance W-boson mass via the loop corrections. On the other hand, with a proper discrete symmetry, the lightest new scalar in the doublet can be stable and play the role of a dark matter particle. We show that the inert two Higgs doublet model can naturally handle the new W-boson mass without violating other constraints and that the preferred dark matter mass is between 54 and 74 GeV. We identify three feasible parameter regions for the thermal relic density: the SA coannihilation, the Higgs resonance, and the SS→WW^{*} annihilation. We find that the first region can be fully tested by the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider, the second region will be tightly constrained by direct detection experiments, and the third region could yield detectable GeV γ-ray and antiproton signals in the Galaxy that may have been observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope and the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer AMS-02 experiment.

Fully general-relativistic binary-neutron-star (BNS) merger simulations with quark-hadron crossover (QHC) equations of state (EOS) are studied for the first time. In contrast to EOS with purely hadronic matter or with a first-order quark-hadron phase transition (1PT), in the transition region QHC EOS show a peak in sound speed and thus a stiffening. For the newly discovered W-boson mass anomaly, one of the simplest dark matter (DM) models that can account for the anomaly without violating other astrophysical and experimental constraints is the inert two Higgs doublet model, in which the DM mass (m_{S}) is found to be within ∼54-74 GeV. In this model, the annihilation of DM via SS→bb[over ¯] and SS→WW^{*} would produce antiprotons and gamma rays, and may account for the excesses identified previously in both particles. Motivated by this, we reanalyze the AMS-02 antiproton and Fermi-LAT Galactic center γ-ray data. For the antiproton analysis, the novel treatment is the inclusion of the charge-sign-dependent three-dimensional solar modulation model as constrained by the time-dependent proton data. We find that the excess of antiprotons is more distinct than previous results based on the force-field solar modulation model. The interpretation of this excess as the annihilation of SS→WW^{*} (SS→bb[over ¯]) requires a DM mass of ∼40-80 (40-60) GeV and a velocity-averaged cross section of O(10^{-26}) cm^{3} s^{-1}. As for the γ-ray data analysis, besides adopting the widely used spatial template fitting, we employ an orthogonal approach with a data-driven spectral template analysis. The fitting to the GeV γ-ray excess yields DM model parameters overlapped with those to fit the antiproton excess via the WW^{*} channel. The consistency of the DM particle properties required to account for the W-boson mass anomaly, the GeV antiproton excess, and the GeV γ-ray excess suggests a common origin of them.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation and insulin resistance (IR) are often associated with poor prognosis in cancer. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of surrogate systemic inflammation and IR indices in patients with cancer. METHODS: This multicenter prospective study included 5,221 patients with cancer, with a mean age of 59.41±11.15 years, of whom 3,061 (58.6%) were male. The surrogate IR indices included low-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LHR) ratio, total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/ HDL-c) ratio, triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-c) ratio, and fasting triglyceride glucose (TyG). Prognostic receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves and C-indices were used to select a better surrogate IR index in patients with cancer. The prognostic value of the indicators was evaluated using univariate and multivariate survival analyses. RESULTS: In this study, the median survival time of patients was 44.5 (40.5-51.4) months, and the overall mortality in the 12-month period was 1,115 (53.7%), with 196 mortality events per 1,000 patient-years of patients' follow-up. The prognostic ROC curve and C-index suggested that the prognostic value of LHR was better than that of the other IR indices. The multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS) were higher in patients with high C-reactive protein (CRP) (HR, 1.51; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.38-1.65) and high LHR (HR, 1.20; 95% CI: 1.06-1.37), respectively. The mortality rate of patients with both high CRP and LHR was 1.75-fold higher than that of patients with both low CRP and LHR. CONCLUSION: Both CRP and LHR showed good survival predictions in patients with cancer. CRP combined with LHR can improve the predictive power of patients with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation is currently regarded as a hallmark of cancer. This study aimed to accurately clarify the prognostic value of various inflammatory markers in patients with stage IV cancer. METHODS: This study assessed 2,424 patients with cancer diagnosed with cancer in tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) stage IV. After evaluating the predictive value of 13 inflammatory indicators for patient prognosis using the C index, the lymphocyte C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) was selected to elucidate the prognostic and predictive values in patients with stage IV cancer. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to analyze long-term survival. RESULTS: A total of 1,457 men (60.1%) and 967 women (39.9%) diagnosed with TNM stage IV cancer were enrolled. A ratio of 2,814 was defined as the optimal cut-off value for the LCR. The LCR was the most accurate prognosis predictor for patients with stage IV cancer among the 13 inflammatory nutritional markers evaluated. The multivariate-adjusted restricted cubic spline plot suggested that LCR had an L-shaped dose-response association with all-cause mortality risk. Patients with lower LCR levels tended to present with worse prognoses. Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank test results showed that the high LCR groups (LCR ≥ 2,814) exhibited a better prognosis, whereas patients with stage IV cancer of different sex and tumor types (for example, gastrointestinal tumor, non-gastrointestinal tumor, and lung cancer) had a worse survival time. CONCLUSION: The LCR score can be regarded as a stable and useful biomarker to predict prognosis in patients with TNM stage IV compared to other evaluated inflammation indicators.

Despite recent advances in diagnosis and therapeutic strategies, treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unsatisfactory in terms of prognosis. Andrographolide (AD), a principal active component of Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Nees, exerts anti-cancer therapeutic properties. AD has been used for centuries in China for clinical treatment of viral infections. However, the pharmacological biology of AD in NSCLC remains unknown. In this study, AD regulated autophagy and PD-L1 expression in NSCLC. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that AD bound directly to signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT3) with high affinity. Proteomics analysis indicated that AD reduced the expression of tumour PD-L1 in NSCLC by suppressing JAK2/STAT3 signalling. AD modulated the P62-dependent selective autophagic degradation of PD-L1 by inhibiting STAT3 phosphorylation. In vivo study revealed that AD suppressed tumour growth in H1975 xenograft mice and Lewis lung carcinoma cell models, and better efficacy was obtained at higher concentrations. AD prolonged the survival time of the mice and enhanced the treatment efficacy of anti-PD-1 mAb immunotherapy by stimulating CD8+ T cell infiltration and function. This work elucidated the specific mechanism by which AD inhibited NSCLC. Treatment with the combination of AD and anti-PD-1 mAb immunotherapy could be a potential strategy for patients with NSCLC.

No relevant studies have yet been conducted to explore which measurement can best predict the survival time of patients with cancer cachexia. This study aimed to identify an anthropometric measurement that could predict the 1-year survival of patients with cancer cachexia. We conducted a nested case-control study using data from a multicentre clinical investigation of cancer from 2013 to 2020. Cachexia was defined using the Fearon criteria. A total of 262 patients who survived less than 1 year and 262 patients who survived more than 1 year were included in this study. Six candidate variables were selected based on clinical experience and previous studies. Five variables, BMI, mid-arm circumference, mid-arm muscle circumference, calf circumference and triceps skin fold (TSF), were selected for inclusion in the multivariable model. In the conditional logistic regression analysis, TSF (P = 0·014) was identified as a significant independent protective factor. A similar result was observed in all patients with cancer cachexia (n 3084). In addition, a significantly stronger positive association between TSF and the 1-year survival of patients with cancer cachexia was observed in participants aged > 65 years (OR: 0·94; 95 % CI 0·89, 0·99) than in those aged ≤ 65 years (OR: 0·96; 95 % CI 0·93, 0·99; Pinteraction = 0·013) and in participants with no chronic disease (OR: 0·92; 95 % CI 0·87, 0·97) than in those with chronic disease (OR: 0·97; 95 % CI 0·94, 1·00; Pinteraction = 0·049). According to this study, TSF might be a good anthropometric measurement for predicting 1-year survival in patients with cancer cachexia.

Kidney biopsies are used sparingly to diagnose kidney injury in the clinic. Here we have conducted a small exploratory study to directly compare the low-grade kidney injury monitoring performance of serum safety biomarkers, novel urine safety biomarkers, microscopic histopathology and targeted gene expression alterations in kidney biopsy specimens in rhesus monkeys treated with tobramycin. Targeted gene expression increases were observed in the kidney biopsy samples and whole kidney sections for kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1), clusterin (CLU), osteopontin (OPN) messenger RNA transcripts. In addition, increases of the urinary kidney safety protein biomarkers including KIM-1, CLU, OPN were also observed. These increases in gene expression and urinary protein end point were in concordance with the eventual low-grade kidney lesions seen in terminal tissue sections. In contrast, conventional serum biomarkers blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine were not as sensitive in monitoring kidney injury. Although these data do not support routinely adding kidney biopsies to regular toxicology studies, they provide evidence on the value and limitations of incorporating gene expression profiling on kidney biopsy specimens, further underscore the value of urinary kidney safety biomarkers for improved low-grade kidney injury monitoring, and open the door for future definitive studies.
