RESUMO

Lactylation is a lactate-induced post-translational modification best known for its roles in epigenetic regulation. Herein, we demonstrate that MRE11, a crucial homologous recombination (HR) protein, is lactylated at K673 by the CBP acetyltransferase in response to DNA damage and dependent on ATM phosphorylation of the latter. MRE11 lactylation promotes its binding to DNA, facilitating DNA end resection and HR. Inhibition of CBP or LDH downregulated MRE11 lactylation, impaired HR, and enhanced chemosensitivity of tumor cells in patient-derived xenograft and organoid models. A cell-penetrating peptide that specifically blocks MRE11 lactylation inhibited HR and sensitized cancer cells to cisplatin and PARPi. These findings unveil lactylation as a key regulator of HR, providing fresh insights into the ways in which cellular metabolism is linked to DSB repair. They also imply that the Warburg effect can confer chemoresistance through enhancing HR and suggest a potential therapeutic strategy of targeting MRE11 lactylation to mitigate the effects.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) increase in number and gain immunosuppressive functions in tumours and many other pathological conditions. MDSCs are characterized by their strong T-cell immunosuppressive capacity. The effects that MDSCs may have on B cells, especially within the tumour microenvironment, are less well understood. Here, we report that either monocytic MDSCs or polymorphonuclear MDSCs can promote increases in interleukin (IL)-10-expressing CD19hiFcγRIIbhi regulatory B cells in vitro and in vivo. Splenic transitional-1, -2, and -3 cells and marginal zone B cells, but not follicular B cells, differentiate into IL-10-expressing CD19hiFcγRIIbhi regulatory B cells. The adoptive transfer of CD19hiFcγRIIbhi regulatory B cells via tail vein injection can promote subcutaneous 3LL tumour growth in mice. The expression of programmed death-ligand 1 on MDSCs was found to be strongly associated with CD19hiFcγRIIbhi regulatory B cell population expansion. Furthermore, the frequency of circulating CD19+FcγRIIhi regulatory B cells was significantly increased in advanced-stage lung cancer patients. Our results unveil a critical role of MDSCs in regulatory B-cell differentiation and population expansion in lung cancer patients.

Achieving high guest loading and multiguest-binding capacity holds crucial significance for advancement in separation, catalysis, and drug delivery with synthetic receptors; however, it remains a challenging bottleneck in characterization of high-stoichiometry guest-binding events. Herein, we describe a large-sized coordination cage (MOC-70-Zn8Pd6) possessing 12 peripheral pockets capable of accommodating multiple guests and a high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS)-based method to understand the solution host-guest chemistry. A diverse range of bulky guests, varying from drug molecules to rigid fullerenes as well as flexible host molecules of crown ethers and calixarenes, could be loaded into open pockets with high capacities. Notably, these hollow cage pockets provide multisites to capture different guests, showing heteroguest coloading behavior to capture binary, ternary, or even quaternary guests. Moreover, a pair of commercially applied drugs for the combination therapy of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has been tested, highlighting its potential in multidrug delivery for combined treatment.

The structural dynamics of artificial assemblies, in aspects such as molecular recognition and structural transformation, provide us with a blueprint to achieve bioinspired applications. Here, we describe the assembly of redox-switchable chiral metal-organic cages Λ8/Δ8-[Pd6(CoIIL3)8]28+ and Λ8/Δ8-[Pd6(CoIIIL3)8]36+. These isomeric cages demonstrate an on-off chirality logic gate controlled by their chemical and stereostructural dynamics tunable through redox transitions between the labile CoII-state and static CoIII-state with a distinct Cotton effect. The transition between different states is enabled by a reversible redox process and chiral recognition originating in the tris-chelate Co-centers. All cages in two states are thoroughly characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, CV, CD, and X-ray crystallographic analysis, which clarify their redox-switching behaviors upon chemical reduction/oxidation. The stereochemical lability of the CoII-center endows the Λ8/Δ8-CoII-cages with efficient chiral-induction by enantiomeric guests, leading to enantiomeric isomerization to switch between Λ8/Δ8-CoII-cages, which can be stabilized by oxidation to their chemically inert forms of Λ8/Δ8-CoIII-cages. Kinetic studies reveal that the isomerization rate of the Δ8-CoIII-cage is at least an order of magnitude slower than that of the Δ8-CoII-cage even at an elevated temperature, while its activation energy is 16 kcal mol-1 higher than that of the CoII-cage.

Cameras, LiDAR, and radars are indispensable for accurate perception of the surrounding environment and autonomous driving. Failure mechanisms of silicon-based CMOS image sensor (CIS) irradiated by 1550 nm nanosecond laser were investigated systematically in this paper. The damages of CIS were divided into point damage, line damage, and cross damage according to different damage performances. The damage thresholds under different irradiation conditions (different repetition rates, pulse widths, and irradiation times) were explored. Large repetition rates and long irradiation times would induce more heat accumulation, more temperature increase, and a low point damage threshold. The damage threshold for a pulse with a narrow pulse width is lower than that for a pulse with a long pulse width. The damaged CIS was analyzed further by focused ion beam (FIB) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The damage location in the internal CIS structure was analyzed and the overall failure process was summarized. The results we get could enrich the database of laser damage mechanisms and laser damage thresholds of CIS, which will provide meaningful guidance for the camera design technology and anti-laser reinforcement technology of optoelectronic devices.

We sought to determine whether the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors is associated with a decreased risk of incident lung cancers among patients with type 2 diabetes. We assembled a new-user, active comparator cohort of SGLT-2 inhibitor and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor users using the United Kingdom Clinical Practice Research Datalink. We fit Cox proportional hazards models with propensity score fine stratification weighting to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident lung cancer. Crude incidence rates were 0.94 per 1000 person-years among 69 675 SGLT-2 inhibitor users followed for a median of 2.4 years and 1.45 per 1000 person-years among 151 495 DPP-4 inhibitor users followed for a median of 3.7 years. No reduced short-term risk of lung cancer was observed among SGLT-2 inhibitor users after weighting (HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.77-1.21). Further research with a longer follow-up period may be warranted.

Cadmium (Cd) geochemical behavior is strongly influenced by its adsorption onto natural phyllomanganates, which contain both layer edge sites and vacancies; however, Cd isotope fractionation mechanisms at these sites have not yet been addressed. In the present work, Cd isotope fractionation during adsorption onto hexagonal (containing both types of sites) and triclinic birnessite (almost only edge sites) was investigated using a combination of batch adsorption experiments, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, surface complexation modeling, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Light Cd isotopes are preferentially enriched on solid surfaces, and the isotope fractionation induced by Cd2+ adsorption on edge sites (Δ114/110Cdedge-solution = -1.54 ± 0.11‰) is smaller than that on vacancies (Δ114/110Cdvacancy-solution = -0.71 ± 0.21‰), independent of surface coverage or pH. Both Cd K-edge EXAFS and DFT results indicate the formation of double corner-sharing complexes on layer edge sites and mainly triple cornering-sharing complexes on vacancies. The distortion of both complexes results in the negative isotope fractionation onto the solids, and the slightly longer first Cd-O distances and a smaller number of nearest Mn atoms around Cd at edge sites probably account for the larger fractionation magnitude compared to that of vacancies. These results provide deep insights into Cd isotope fractionation mechanisms during interactions with phyllomanganates.

Semiconductor materials of abnormal stoichiometric ratio often exhibit unique properties, yet it is still a challenge to determine the structures of such materials in an efficient way. Herein, we propose a method for structurally biased screening according to the coordination numbers and the numbers of Wyckoff positions, balancing the atom local environment and the global symmetry of structures. Based on first-principles calculations, we have predicted two metastable peroxides P21/c-ScO2 and Pmmn-TiO3 with more than six coordination points. For these two structures, the most stable intrinsic defect is the oxygen vacancy (VO) at the peroxide anion (O2-2), which induces the absence of antibonding orbital formed by O2-2 near the valence band maximum. With the introduction of VO, the decrease of coordination numbers leads to charge recombination, and results in the appearance of an ordered phase TiO2.5 with stronger Ti-O orbital hybridization. The proposed method presents a promising and feasible approach for the screening of novel compounds.

Ten new (1-10) and nine known (11-19) austocystins, along with four known anthraquinones (20-23), were isolated from the culture of Aspergillus ustus NRRL 5856 by bioactivity-guided fractionation. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis, X-ray crystallographic study, the modified Mosher's method, [Rh2(OCOCF3)4]-induced ECD spectral analysis, and comparison of the experimental ECD spectra with those of the similar analogues. Compounds 1-8 represent the first examples of austocystins with a C-4' oxygenated substitution. The absolute configuration of 1″-hydroxy austocystin D (11) was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and consideration of its biosynthetic origin. Compounds 5, 9, and 11 exhibited significant inhibitory effects against the proliferation of ConA-induced T cells with IC50 values of 1.1, 1.0, and 0.93 µM, respectively. Furthermore, these compounds suppressed the expression of IL-6 in a dose-dependent manner. Compounds 10-12 and 14 showed pronounced cytotoxicities against MCF-7 with IC50 values of 3.9, 1.3, 0.46, and 2.3 µM, respectively.

Twelve new austalide meroterpenoids (1-12) were isolated from the endophytic fungus Diaporthe sp. XC1211. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of compounds 1, 3, 4, and 6 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, whereas those for the others were established by experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data analysis. Compounds 1-12 represent a rare class of austalides with a 24α-CH3. Compounds 2 and 5 demonstrated potent proliferation inhibitory effects against LPS-induced B cells with IC50 values of 6.7 (SI = 3.6) and 3.8 (SI > 13) µM, respectively. Compounds 2 and 5 decreased the secretion of IL-6 in LPS-induced B cells in a dose-dependent manner.

BACKGROUND: Health policy competencies of regional organizations include mandates to create regional health laws and policies, as well as authorities that allow member states to undertake collective actions in the health field. The examination of the health policy competencies of regional organizations is essential, as it constitutes an important prerequisite for regional organizations to govern regional health. This study aims to map the development trajectory of health policy competencies in regional organizations worldwide and investigate their potential correlates. This will contribute to the enhanced promotion of both existing and new regional health cooperation. METHODS: This retrospective analysis utilized the health policy competencies of the 76 regional organizations worldwide from 1945 to 2015, as investigated in the Regional Organizations Competencies Database. By aggregating member state data from various sources such as the IHME Global Burden of Disease 2019, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization, we extracted the mean values and coefficients of variation for the covariates in regional organization characteristics, socioeconomic and demographic factors, health status and health-system capacity. The correlation between changes in the health policy scope of regional organizations and independent variables was analyzed using Poisson pseudo-likelihood regression with multiple levels of fixed effects. RESULTS: From 1945 to 2015, the number of regional organizations with health policy competencies experienced a slow growth stage before 1991 and an explosive growth stage post-1991. By 2015, 48 out of the 71 existing regional organizations had developed their health policy competencies, yet 26 (54.2%) of these organizations possessed only 1-2 health policy competencies. An enhancement in the health policy scope of a regional organization correlated with its founding year, a greater number of policy fields, higher under-five mortality, and larger disparities in trade and healthcare access and quality indexes among member states. In contrast, larger disparities in population, under-five mortality and health worker density among member states, along with more hospital beds per capita, were negatively correlated with the expansion of a regional organization's health policy scope. CONCLUSION: Since 1991, there has been a surge of interest in health among regional organizations, although health remains a secondary priority for them. The health policy competencies of regional organizations are pivotal for promoting social equity within regional communities. Its establishment is also closely linked to the level and disparities among member states in aspects such as trade, population, child mortality rates, and health system capacity.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of competent staff with expertise in public health emergency preparedness and response in the civil aviation system. The civil aviation system is a critical sentinel and checkpoint to prevent imported cases and slow the spread of communicable diseases. Understanding the current competencies of staff to deal with public health emergencies will help government agencies develop targeted training and evidence-based policies to improve their public health preparedness and response capabilities. METHODS: This cross-sectional pilot study was conducted from November 2022 to October 2023, involving 118 staff members from various positions within China's civil aviation system. A 59-item questionnaire was translated and developed according to a competency profile. Data were collected using the self-report questionnaire to measure the workforce's self-perceptions of knowledge and skills associated with public health emergency proficiency, categorized into (1) general competency, (2) preparedness competency, (3) response competency, and (4) recovery competency. KMO & Bartlett test and Cronbach's α reliability analysis were used to test the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, independent sample T-test, ANOVA, and linear regression models were performed to analyze the competencies. RESULTS: A total of 107 staff members from the aviation system were surveyed in this study. The KMO & Bartlett test, (KMO = 0.919, P < 0.001) and Cronbach's α coefficients (α = 0.985) for this questionnaire were acceptable. The results suggested that respondents scored a mean of 6.48 out of 9 for the single question. However, the staff needed to acquire more knowledge in investigating epidemic information (5.92) and case managing (5.91) in the response stage. Overall, males scored higher (409.05 ± 81.39) than females (367.99 ± 84.97), with scores in the medical department (445.67 ± 72.01) higher than management (387.00 ± 70.87) and general department (362.32 ± 86.93). Additionally, those with completely subjective evaluation (425.79 ± 88.10) scored higher than the general group (374.39 ± 79.91). To predict the total score, female medical workers were more likely to have lower scores (ß = -34.5, P = 0.041). Compared with those in the medical department, the management workers (ß = -65.54, P = 0.008) and general workers (ß = -78.06, P < 0.001) were associated with a lower total score. CONCLUSIONS: There was still a gap between the public health emergency competencies of the civil aviation system and the demand. Staff in China's civil aviation systems demonstrated overall competence in public health emergency preparedness and response. However, there was a need to enhance the accumulation of practical experience. Implementing effective training programs for public health emergencies was recommended to mitigate knowledge gaps. Meanwhile, regular training evaluations were also recommended to give comprehensive feedback on the value of the training programs.

Ankyrin repeat domain 52 (ANKRD52) is a regulatory component of the protein phosphatase 6 (PP6) holoenzyme. Evidence has emerged to suggest involvement of ANKRD52 in tumor metastases and cancer cell escape from T cell-mediated elimination and immunotherapy but there has been no research across different cancer types. The current study explored the biological functions of ANKRD52 by combining data from many databases. The aim was to expose new diagnostic or treatment biomarkers for malignant tumors. The roles of ANKRD52 with respect to immunotherapy in 33 human cancer types were analyzed by combining data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx), Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE), UCSC Xena, the Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER), TISIDB and Cellminer. Bioinformatics methods were used to analyze the association between ANKRD52 expression and prognosis, immunological indicators (immune cell infiltration, ESTIMATE scores and tumor microenvironment (TME) signatures), tumor mutational burden (TMB), microsatellite instability (MSI) and drug sensitivity. ANKRD52 expression was generally higher in 24 tumor tissues than in normal tissues and was associated with poor prognosis, especially in kidney chromophobe (KICH). Lower expression was observed in advanced cancer. ANKRD52 expression was strongly linked to major immunological indicators, such as immune cell infiltration, ESTIMATE scores, TME signatures, as well as expression of immune and tumor-related genes. Expression was also associated with indicators of immunotherapy efficacy and outcome, such as TMB in 7 cancer types and MSI in 12. In addition, ANKRD52 expression was linked to sensitivity to a number of anticancer drugs. ANKRD52 had a distinct immune function in breast invasive carcinoma (BRCA) that correlated negatively with most immune indicators. Expression was enriched in proliferation-, differentiation- and metabolism-related pathways and linked to other immune cells and TME signatures. A nomogram to predict 3- or 5-year overall survival (OS) of patients with BRCA was constructed. ANKRD52 may have utility as an oncological and immunological biomarker. New insights into oncogenesis are presented and the development of ANKRD52-targeting to increase the therapeutic efficacy of immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy explored.

This study aimed to assess the impact of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) intervention in preventing venous thromboembolism (VTE) among postoperative lung cancer patients. Conducted from January 2022 to January 2023, the research involved 125 lung cancer patients randomly assigned to either a control group (n = 60) receiving routine care, or an ERAS group (n = 65) which received both routine care and ERAS interventions. The ERAS program comprised a comprehensive series of interventions meticulously implemented throughout the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. Thrombotic risk assessment using the Caprini Risk Assessment Model (RAM) was conducted preoperatively and on postoperative day 5 (POD 5), with plasma D-dimer levels measured preoperatively, on POD 1, POD 3, and POD 5. Quality of life and patient satisfaction were assessed at discharge using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire-Lung Cancer Module 13 (QLQ-LC13) and The Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale (NSNS), respectively. The ERAS group demonstrated significantly lower Caprini RAM scores on POD 5 compared to the control group, with lower D-dimer levels on POD 3 and POD 5. The incidence of VTE was lower in the ERAS group (1.54%) compared to the control group (11.67%) during hospitalization. At discharge, the ERAS group showed improved quality of life, with higher satisfaction scores for nursing care and their hospital stay. ERAS nursing interventions effectively mitigate thrombotic risk, improve D-dimer levels, enhance postoperative quality of life, and elevate patient satisfaction among individuals undergoing lung cancer surgery.

The urban integrated energy system (UIES) is the fundamental infrastructure supporting the operation of resilient cities. The resilience of UIES plays a critical role in effectively responding to extreme events. We provide a comprehensive review on the management of resilient UIES. Firstly, we examine the existing studies on the resilience of UIES through quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Secondly, it points out that the coupling characteristics of UIES have a dual impact on resilience. The definition of UIES resilience can be understood from three perspectives, namely partial resilience versus total resilience, physical resilience versus digital resilience, and current resilience versus future resilience. Thirdly, this review summarizes the strategies for improving the resilience of UIES across three distinct stages, namely before, during, and after extreme events. The resilience of UIES can be enhanced by effective measures to prediction, adaptation, and assessment. Finally, the challenges faced by management of resilient UIES are presented and discussed, in terms of mitigating compound risks, modeling complex systems, addressing data collection and quality issue, and collaborating within multi stakeholders.

A series of isostructural supramolecular cages with a rhombic dodecahedron shape have been assembled with distinct metal-coordination lability (M8 Pd6 -MOC-16, M=Ru2+ , Fe2+ , Ni2+ , Zn2+ ). The chirality transfer between metal centers generally imposes homochirality on individual cages to enable solvent-dependent spontaneous resolution of Δ8 /Λ8 -M8 Pd6 enantiomers; however, their distinguishable stereochemical dynamics manifests differential chiral phenomena governed by the cage stability following the order Ru8 Pd6 >Ni8 Pd6 >Fe8 Pd6 >Zn8 Pd6 . The highly labile Zn centers endow the Zn8 Pd6 cage with conformational flexibility and deformation, enabling intrigue chiral-Δ8 /Λ8 -Zn8 Pd6 to meso-Δ4 Λ4 -Zn8 Pd6 transition induced by anions. The cage stabilization effect differs from inert Ru2+ , metastable Fe2+ /Ni2+ , and labile Zn2+ , resulting in different chiral-guest induction. Strikingly, solvent-mediated host-guest interactions have been revealed for Δ8 /Λ8 -(Ru/Ni/Fe)8 Pd6 cages to discriminate the chiral recognition of the guests with opposite chirality. These results demonstrate a versatile procedure to control the stereochemistry of metal-organic cages based on the dynamic metal centers, thus providing guidance to maneuver cage chirality at a supramolecular level by virtue of the solvent, anion, and guest to benefit practical applications.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) compared with the use of histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs) is associated with an increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). DESIGN: Population-based cohort study designed to address the impact of protopathic bias. SETTING: General practices contributing data to the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink GOLD. PARTICIPANTS: 1 498 416 initiators of PPIs and 322 474 initiators of H2RAs from 1 January 1990 to 31 December 2018, with follow-up until 31 December 2019. Patients were analysed according to the timing of the IBD diagnosis after treatment initiation (early vs late). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Standardised morbidity ratio weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate marginal HRs and 95% CIs. In the early-event analysis, IBD diagnoses were assessed within the first 2 years of treatment initiation, an analysis subject to potential protopathic bias. In the late-event analysis, all exposures were lagged by 2 years to account for latency and minimise protopathic bias. RESULTS: In the early-event analysis, the use of PPIs was associated with an increased risk of IBD within the first 2 years of treatment initiation, compared with H2RAs (HR 1.39, 95% CI 1.14 to 1.69). In contrast, the use of PPIs was not associated with an increased risk of IBD in the late-event analysis (HR 1.05, 95% CI 0.90 to 1.22). The results remained consistent in several sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with H2RAs, PPIs were not associated with an increased risk of IBD, after accounting for protopathic bias.

Molecular recognition lies at the heart of biological functions, which inspires lasting research in artificial host syntheses to mimic biomolecules that can recognize, process, and transport molecules with the highest level of complexity; nonetheless, the design principle and quantifying methodology of artificial hosts for multiple guests (≥4) remain a formidable task. Herein, we report two rhombic dodecahedral cages [(Zn/Fe)8Pd6-MOC-16], which embrace 12 adaptive pockets for multiguest binding with distinct conformational dynamics inherent in metal-center lability and are able to capture 4-24 guests to manifest a surprising complexity of binding scenarios. The exceptional high-order and hierarchical encapsulation phenomena suggest a wide host-guest dynamic-fit, enabling conformational adjustment and adaptation beyond the duality of induced-fit and conformational selection in protein interactions. A critical inspection of the host-guest binding events in solution has been performed by NMR and ESI-MS spectra, highlighting the importance of acquiring a reliable binding repertoire from different techniques and the uncertainty of quantifying the binding affinities of multiplying guests by an oversimplified method.

AIM: To examine trends of second-line glucose-lowering therapies among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) initiating first-line metformin in the United States and the United Kingdom, overall and by subgroups of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and calendar time. METHODS: Using the US Optum Clinformatics and the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, we identified adults with T2D who initiated first-line metformin or sulphonylurea monotherapy, separately, from 2013 to 2019. Within both cohorts, we identified patterns of second-line medications through June 2021. We stratified patterns by CVD and calendar time to investigate the impact of rapidly evolving treatment guidelines. RESULTS: We identified 148 511 and 169 316 patients initiating treatment with metformin monotherapy in the United States and the United Kingdom, respectively. Throughout the study period, sulphonylureas and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors were the most frequently initiated second-line medications in the United States (43.4% and 18.2%, respectively) and the United Kingdom (42.5% and 35.8%, respectively). After 2018, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists were more commonly used as second-line agents in the United States and the United Kingdom, although these agents were not preferentially prescribed among patients with CVD. Initiation of first-line sulphonylureas was much less common, and most sulphonylurea initiators had metformin added as the second-line agent. CONCLUSIONS: This international cohort study shows that sulphonylureas remain the most common second-line medications prescribed following metformin in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Despite recommendations, the use of newer glucose-lowering therapies with cardiovascular benefits remains low.

The Zn isotope fingerprint is widely used as a proxy of various environmental geochemical processes, so it is crucial to determine which are the mechanisms responsible for isotopic fractionation. Iron (Fe) (hydr)oxides greatly control the cycling and fate and thus isotope fractionation factors of Zn in terrestrial environments. Here, Zn isotope fractionation and related mechanisms during adsorption on and substitution in three FeOOH polymorphs are explored. Results demonstrate that heavy Zn isotopes are preferentially enriched onto solids, with almost similar isotopic offsets (Δ66/64Znsolid-solution = 0.25-0.36‰) for goethite, lepidocrocite, and feroxyhyte. This is consistent with the same average Zn-O bond lengths for adsorbed Zn on these solids as revealed by Zn K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. In contrast, at an initial Zn/Fe molar ratio of 0.02, incorporation of Zn into goethite and lepidocrocite by substituting for lattice Fe preferentially sequesters light Zn isotopes with Δ66/64Znsubstituted-stock solution of -1.52 ± 0.09‰ and -1.18 ± 0.15‰, while Zn-substituted feroxyhyte (0.06 ± 0.11‰) indicates almost no isotope fractionation. This is closely related to the different crystal nucleation and growth rates during the Zn-doped FeOOH formation processes. These results provide direct experimental evidence of incorporation of isotopically light Zn into Fe (hydr)oxides and improve our understanding of Zn isotope fractionation mechanisms during mineral-solution interface processes.
