RESUMO

PBC is an autoimmune-mediated liver disease, and intrahepatic biliary epithelial cells (IBECs) are the target cells of early damage. Previous studies found that miRNAs and inflammation is closely related to PBC. In this study, we extracted exosomes from serum and human IBECs supernatant, and RNA-sequence analyzed the expression profiles of miRNAs. Elisa measured the levels of inflammatory cytokines. RT- qPCR and western blot detected the levels of miR-122-5p, p38 and p-p38. The results showed that 263 differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs were identified in serum exosomes of PBC patients. The levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-12, IL-17 A, IFN-γ, TNF-α and TGF-ß1 in peripheral blood of PBC patients were higher than those of normal controls. According to the validation results and previous literature, exosomal miR-122-5p was finally selected as the study object, and correlated with inflammatory factors. In vitro experiments further found that exosomal miR-122-5p may derive from hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), and can be HIBECs intake, and influence HIBECs inflammatory factor levels though p38 MAPK signaling pathways. This may provide a new strategy for the treatment of PBC.

RESUMO

This study aimed to analyse the association between sex hormones and bone age (BA) in boys aged 9-18 years, both individually and interactively, and further to explore whether nutritional status may influence this association. A retrospective analysis was performed among 1382 Chinese boys with physical measurements, sexual characteristics, BA radiographs and sex hormone indicators from February 2015 to February 2022. A total of 470 (34.0%) boys had advanced BA. BA was positively associated with estradiol, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone in both advanced and normal BA groups after adjusting for age, genetic height and body mass index. Multiple logistic regression showed that after adjusting for covariates, estradiol (odds ratio [OR] = 1.66, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-2.12), LH (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.04-1.96), and testosterone (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.17-2.13) were significantly associated with the increased risk of advanced BA in boys, and the association was reinforced when these hormones were interactively explored. Stratified by nutritional status, the interaction between estradiol, LH, and testosterone showed a strong association with advanced BA in boys with normal weight.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Brain structure, oxygenation and perfusion are important factors in aging. Coupling between regional cerebral oxygen consumption and perfusion also reflects functions of neurovascular unit (NVU). Their trajectories and sex differences during normal aging important for clinical interpretation are still not well defined. In this study, we aim to investigate the relationship between brain structure, functions and age, and exam the sex disparities. METHOD: A total of 137 healthy subjects between 20∼69 years old were enrolled with conventional MRI, structural three-dimensional T1-weighted imaging (3D-T1WI), 3D multi-echo gradient echo sequence (3D-mGRE), and 3D pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (3D-pCASL). Oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) were respectively reconstructed from 3D-mGRE and 3D-pCASL images. Cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) were calculated as follows: CMRO2=CBF·OEF·[H]a, [H]a=7.377 µmol/mL. Brains were segmented into global gray matter (GM), global white matter (WM), and 148 cortical subregions. OEF, CBF, CMRO2, and volumes of GM/WM relative to intracranial volumes (rel_GM/rel_WM) were compared between males and females. Generalized additive models were used to evaluate the aging trajectories of brain structure and functions. The coupling between OEF and CBF was analyzed by correlation analysis. P or PFDR < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Females had larger rel_GM, higher CMRO2 and CBF of GM/WM than males (P < 0.05). With control of sex, CBF of GM significantly declined between 20 and 32 years, CMRO2 of GM declined subsequently from 33 to 41 years and rel_GM decreased significantly at all ages (R2 = 0.27, P < 0.001; R2 = 0.17, P < 0.001; R2 = 0.52, P < 0.001). In subregion analysis, CBF declined dispersedly while CMRO2 declined widely across most subregions of the cortex during aging. Robust negative coupling between OEF and CBF was found in most of the subregions (r range = -0.12∼-0.48, PFDR < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The sex disparities, age trajectories of brain structure and functions as well as the coupling of NVU in healthy individuals provide insights into normal aging which are potential targets for study of pathological conditions.

RESUMO

Electrocatalytic reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia has attracted significant research interest. Herein, it reports the boosting performance of electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction on Ti2 CO2 MXene with an oxygen vacancy through biaxial tensile strain engineering. Specifically, tensile strain modified electronic structures and formation energy of oxygen vacancy are evaluated. The exposed Ti atoms with additional electron states near the Fermi level serve as active site for intermediate adsorption, leading to superior catalytic performance (Ulimit = -0.44 V) under 2.5% biaxial tensile strain through a distal mechanism. However, the two sides of the "Sabatier optimum" in volcano plot are not limited by two different electronic steps, but are induced by the diverse adsorption behaviors of intermediates. Crucially, the "Sabatier optimum" results from the different response speeds of the adsorption energy for *N2 and *NNH to strains. Moreover, the authors observe conventional d-band adsorption for *N2 and *NNH, non-linear adsorption for *NNH2 , and abnormal d-band adsorption for *N, *NH, *NH2 , and *NH3 , which can be explained by the competition between attractive orbital hybridization and repulsive orbital orthogonalization with the spin-polarized d-band model, which further clarifies the contributions of 3σ → dz2 and dxz /dyz → 2π* to the overall population of bonding and anti-bonding states.

RESUMO

Plants perceive the presence and defence status of their neighbours through light and volatile cues, but how plants integrate both stimuli is poorly understood. We investigated if and how low Red to Far red light (R:FR) ratios, indicative of shading or canopy closure, affect maize (Zea mays) responses to herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), including the green leaf volatile (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate. We modulated light signalling and perception by using FR supplementation and a phyB1phyB2 mutant, and we determined volatile release as a response readout. To gain mechanistic insights, we examined expression of volatile biosynthesis genes, hormone accumulation, and photosynthesis. Exposure to a full blend of HIPVs or (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate induced maize volatile release. Short-term FR supplementation increased this response. In contrast, prolonged FR supplementation or constitutive phytochrome B inactivation in phyB1phyB2 plants showed the opposite response. Short-term FR supplementation enhanced photosynthesis and stomatal conductance and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate-induced JA-Ile levels. We conclude that a FR-enriched light environment can prompt maize plants to respond more strongly to HIPVs emitted by neighbours, which might be explained by changes in photosynthetic processes and phytochrome B signalling. Our findings reveal interactive responses to light and volatile cues with potentially important consequences for plant-plant and plant-herbivore interactions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is dysregulated in various cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Herein, we assess the diagnostic potential of peripheral blood (PB) m6A levels in CRC. METHODS: We collected PB from healthy controls (HCs) and patients with CRC, analyzed PB RNA m6A levels and the expression of m6A-related demethylase genes FTO and ALKBH5, cocultured CRC cells with PB mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and constructed an MC38 cancer model. RESULTS: PB RNA m6A levels were higher in the CRC than that in HCs. The area under the curve (AUC) of m6A levels (0.886) in the CRC was significantly larger compared with carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199; 0.666) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA; 0.834). The combination of CEA and CA199 with PB RNA m6A led to an increase in the AUC (0.935). Compared with HCs, the expression of FTO and ALKBH5 was decreased in the CRC. After coculturing with CRC cells, the PBMCs RNA m6A were significantly increased, whereas the expression of FTO and ALKBH5 decreased. Furthermore, m6A RNA levels in the PB of MC38 cancer models were upregulated, whereas the expression of FTO and ALKBH5 decreased. CONCLUSIONS: PB RNA m6A levels are a potential diagnostic biomarker for patients with CRC.

RESUMO

Newborn piglets' health is seriously threatened by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), which also has a significant effect on the pig industry. The gut microbiota produces butyrate, an abundant metabolite that modulates intestinal function through many methods to improve immunological and intestinal barrier function. The objective of this investigation was to ascertain how elevated butyrate concentrations impacted the host transcriptional profile of PEDV CV777 strain infection. Our findings showed that higher concentrations of butyrate have a stronger inhibitory effect on PEDV CV777 strain infection. According to RNA-seq data, higher concentrations of butyrate induced more significant transcriptional changes in IPEC-J2 cells, and signaling pathways such as PI3K-AKT may play a role in the inhibition of PEDV CV777 strain by high concentrations of butyrate. Ultimately, we offer a theoretical and experimental framework for future research and development of novel approaches to harness butyrate's antiviral infection properties.

RESUMO

Viral infections, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), are some of the most dangerous threats to humans. SARS-CoV-2 has caused a global pandemic, highlighting the unprecedented demand for rapid and portable diagnostic methods. To meet these requirements, we designed a label-free colorimetric platform that combines the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated proteins (Cas) 12a system for naked-eye detection (named LFP). This method utilizes reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) and the trans-cleavage activity of the CRISPR/Cas12a system to increase the sensitivity and specificity of the reaction. This platform can detect as few as 4 copies/µL of RNA and produces no false positive results when tested against the influenza virus. To better meet the requirements of point-of-care (POC) detection, we developed a portable device that can be applied in resource-poor and densely populated regions. The LFP assay holds great potential for application in resource-limited settings, and the label-free gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) probe can reduce costs, making it suitable for large-scale screening. We expect that the LFP assay will be promising for the POC screening of COVID-19.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess the expression and function of miR-483-5p in diabetic ß cells. METHODS: The expression of miR-483-5p was evaluated in the pancreatic islets of obesity mouse models by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Dual-luciferase activity, and western blotting assays, were utilized for miR-483-5p target gene verification. Mice with ß cell-specific miR-483-5p downregulation were studied under metabolic stress (i.e. a high-fat diet) condition. Lineage tracing was used to determine ß-cell fate. RESULTS: miR-483-5p increased in the islets of obese mouse models. Expression levels of miR-483-5p were significantly upregulated with the treatment of high glucose and palmitate, in both MIN6 cells and mouse islets. Overexpression of miR-483-5p in ß cells results in impaired insulin secretion and ß-cell identity. Cell lineage-specific analyses revealed that miR-483-5p overexpression deactivated ß-cell identity genes (insulin, Pdx1 and MafA) and derepressed ß-cell dedifferentiation (Ngn3) genes. miR-483-5p downregulation in ß cells of high-fat diet-fed mice alleviated diabetes and improved glucose intolerance by enhancing insulin secretory capacity. These detrimental effects of miR-483-5p relied on its seed sequence recognition and repressed expression of its target genes Pdx1 and MafA, two crucial markers of ß-cell maturation. CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that the miR-483-5p-mediated reduction of mRNAs specifies ß-cell identity as a contributor to ß-cell dysfunction via the loss of cellular differentiation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Newborn screening (NBS), such as tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), may yield false positive/negative results. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has the potential to provide increased data output, efficiencies, and applications. This study aimed to analyze the types and distribution of pathogenic gene mutations in newborns in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, China and explore the applicability of NGS and MS/MS in NBS. METHODS: Blood spot samples from 1263 newborns were collected. NGS was employed to screen for pathogenic variants in 542 disease-causing genes, and detected variants were validated using Sanger sequencing. Simultaneously, 26 inherited metabolic diseases (IMD) were screened using MS/MS. Positive or suspicious samples identified through MS/MS were cross-referenced with the results of NGS. RESULTS: Among all newborns, 328 had no gene mutations detected. NGS revealed at least one gene mutation in 935 newborns, with a mutation rate of 74.0%. The top 5 genes were FLG, GJB2, UGT1A1, USH2A, and DUOX2. According to American College of Medical Genetics guidelines, gene mutations in 260 cases were classified as pathogenic or likely pathogenic mutation, with a positive rate of 20.6%. The top 5 genes were UGT1A1, FLG, GJB2, MEFV, and G6PD. MS/MS identified 18 positive or suspicious samples for IMD and 1245 negative samples. Verification of these cases by NGS results showed no pathogenic mutations, resulting in a false positive rate of 1.4% (18/1263). CONCLUSION: NBS using NGS technology broadened the range of diseases screened, and enhanced the accuracy of diagnoses in comparison to MS/MS for screening IMD. Combining NGS and biochemical screening would improve the efficiency of current NBS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the integration of high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) to routine clinical examinations could improve diagnostic performance and management decision for pigmented skin tumors. METHODS: Three general practitioners trained previously and a dermatologist independently assessed pigmented skin tumors and rendered management decision based on clinical examinations alone or clinical examinations integrating HFUS. RESULTS: After integrating HFUS, the diagnostic area under the curve (AUC) (0.658-0.693 versus 0.848, all P < .05) and specificity (46.6-58.6% versus 89.7%, all P < .05) for pigmented skin malignancies were improved for general practitioners, meanwhile unnecessary biopsy rate reduced (42.9-53.6% versus 10.7%, P < .001). To the dermatologist, the diagnostic AUC (0.822 versus 0.949, P < .001), sensitivity (81.7% versus 96.7%, P = .012) and specificity (0.828 versus 0.931, P = .031) improved significantly, meanwhile both missed biopsy rate (14.5% versus 4.8%, P = .031) and unnecessary biopsy rate (19.6% versus 7.1%, P = .016) decreased. Additionally, the diagnostic performance of the general practitioner with integrating HFUS could be comparable with the dermatologist based on clinical examinations alone (all P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: As a complementary tool of clinical examinations, HFUS could help physicians differentiate pigmented skin malignancies and manage decision.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the types and distribution of pathogenic variants for neonatal genetic diseases in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province. METHODS: One thousand neonates (48 ~ 42 h after birth) born to Huzhou region were selected as the study subjects. Dry blood spot samples were collected from the newborns, and targeted capture high-throughput sequencing was carried out for pathogenic genes underlying 542 inherited diseases. Candidate variants were verified by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: Among the 1 000 newborns, the male to female ratio was 1.02 : 1.00. No pathogenic variants were detected in 253 cases, whilst 747 cases were found to carry at least one pathogenic variant, which yielded a carrier rate of 74.7%. The most frequently involved pathogenic gene was FLG, followed by GJB2, UGT1A1, USH2A and DUOX2. The variants were classified as homozygous, compound heterozygous, and hemizygous variants. Based on the guidelines from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG), 213 neonates were verified to have carried pathogenic and/or likely pathogenic variants, with a positive rate of 21.3%. The most commonly involved genes had included UGT1A1, FLG, GJB2, MEFV and G6PD. CONCLUSION: Newborn screening based on high-throughput sequencing technology can expand the scope of screening and improve the positive predictive value. Genetic counseling based on the results can improve the patients' medical care and reduce neonatal mortality and childhood morbidity, while provide assistance to family members' health management and reproductive decisions.

RESUMO

The development of artificial photocatalysts to convert CO2 into renewable fuels and H2O into O2 is a complex and crucial task in the field of photosynthesis research. The current challenge is to enhance photogenerated charge separation, as well as to increase the oxidation capability of materials. Herein, a molecular junction-type porphyrin-based crystalline photocatalyst (Ni-TCPP-TPyP) was successfully self-assembled by incorporating a nickel porphyrin complex as a reduction site and pyridyl porphyrin as an oxidation site via hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions. The resulting material has a highly crystalline structure, and the formation of inherent molecular junctions can accelerate photogenerated charge separation and transport. Thus, Ni-TCPP-TPyP achieved an excellent CO production rate of 309.3 µmol g-1 h-1 (selectivity, ~100 %) without the use of any sacrificial agents, which is more than ten times greater than that of single-component photocatalyst (Ni-TCPP) and greater than that of the most organic photocatalysts. The structure-function relationship was investigated by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Our work provides new insight for designing efficient artificial photocatalysts, paving the way for the development of clean and renewable fuels through the conversion of CO2 using solar energy.

RESUMO

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention for their potential in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. However, their photocatalytic efficiency is impeded by insufficient exciton dissociation and charge carrier transport. Constructing COFs with superior planarity is an effective way to enhance the π-conjugation degree and facilitate electron-hole separation. Nonetheless, the conventional linear linkers of COFs inevitably introduce torsional strain that disrupts coplanarity. Herein, we address this issue by introducing inherently coplanar triazine rings as linkers and fused building blocks as monomers to create covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) with superior coplanarity. Both experimental and theoretical calculations confirm that CTFs constructed from fused building blocks significantly enhance the electron-hole separation efficiency and improve the photocatalytic performance, compared to the CTFs constructed with non-fused building blocks. The frontier molecular orbitals and electrostatic potentials (ESP) revealed that the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is preferentially facilitated by the triazine rings, with the water oxidation reaction (WOR) likely occurring at the thiophene-containing moiety. Remarkably, CTF-BTT achieved an exceptional H2O2 production rate of 74956 µmol g-1 h-1 when employing 10 % benzyl alcohol (V/V) as a sacrificial agent in an O2-saturated atmosphere, surpassing existing photocatalysts by nearly an order of magnitude. Our findings provide valuable insights for designing highly coplanar polymer-based photocatalysts that enhance the solar-to-chemical energy conversion process.

RESUMO

Directly electrochemical conversion of nitrate (NO3 -) is an efficient and environmentally friendly technology for ammonia (NH3) production but is challenged by highly selective electrocatalysts. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with unique properties are attractive materials in catalysis, particularly for multi-step reactions. Herein, we first reported the application of HEA (FeCoNiAlTi) for electrocatalytic NO3 - reduction to NH3 (NRA). The bulk HEA is active for NRA but limited by the unsatisfied NH3 yield of 0.36 mg h-1 cm-2 and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 82.66 %. Through an effective phase engineering strategy, uniform intermetallic nanoparticles are introduced on the bulk HEA to increase electrochemical active surface area and charge transfer efficiency. The resulting nanostructured HEA (n-HEA) delivers enhanced electrochemical NRA performance in terms of NH3 yield (0.52 mg h-1 cm-2) and FE (95.23 %). Further experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the multi-active sites (Fe, Co, and Ni) dominated electrocatalysis for NRA over the n-HEA. Notably, the typical Co sites exhibit the lowest energy barrier for NRA with *NH2 to *NH3as the rate-determining step.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to establish a near infrared fluorescent (NIRF) probe based on an EGFR&c-Met bispecific antibody for visualization of esophageal cancer (EC) and metastatic lymph nodes (mLNs). METHODS: EGFR and c-Met expression were assessed by immunohistochemistry. EGFR&c-Met bispecific antibody EMB01 was labeled with IRDye800cw. The binding of EMB01-IR800 was assessed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, flow cytometry, and immunofluorescence. Subcutaneous tumors, orthotopic tumors, and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) were established for in vivo fluorescent imaging. PDX models using lymph nodes with or without metastasis were constructed to assess the performance of EMB01-IR800 in differential diagnosis of lymph nodes. RESULTS: The prevalence of overexpressing EGFR or c-Met was significantly higher than single marker either in EC or corresponding mLNs. The bispecific probe EMB01-IR800 was successfully synthesized, with strong binding affinity. EMB01-IR800 showed strong cellular binding to both Kyse30 (EGFR overexpressing) and OE33 (c-Met overexpressing) cells. In vivo fluorescent imaging showed prominent EMB01-IR800 uptake in either Kyse30 or OE33 subcutaneous tumors. Likewise, EMB01-IR800 exhibited superior tumor enrichment in both thoracic orthotopic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and abdominal orthotopic esophageal adenocarcinoma models. Moreover, EMB01-IR800 produced significantly higher fluorescence in patient-derived mLNs than in benign lymph nodes. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the complementary overexpression of EGFR and c-Met in EC. Compared to single-target probes, the EGFR&c-Met bispecific NIRF probe can efficiently depict heterogeneous esophageal tumors and mLNs, which greatly increased the sensitivity of tumor and mLN identification.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the overall sensitivity and specificity of indocyanine green (ICG)-near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging in the detection of sentinel lymph node metastasis (SLNM) in penile cancer. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library databases to identify manuscripts where ICG was intravenously administered prior to or during penile cancer surgery, with no restriction on language or publication status. The results extracted are presented as forest plots. RESULTS: Seven studies were included in the analysis. The median sensitivity and specificity of ICG-NIR imaging for SLNM detection were 100 and 4%, respectively; the pooled sensitivity was 100.0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 97.0-100.0) and specificity was 2.0% (95% CI 1.0-3.0). There was no significant difference in the diagnostic results between different injection sites and doses in each experimental group. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this meta-analysis is the first to summarize the diagnostic performance of ICG-NIR imaging for SLNM detection in penile cancer. ICG is sensitive in the imaging of SLN tissue, which can consequently improve the accuracy of lymph node detection. However, the specificity is very low.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of machine learning (ML)-based ultrasound (US) radiomics models for risk stratification of gallbladder (GB) masses. METHODS: We prospectively examined 640 pathologically confirmed GB masses obtained from 640 patients between August 2019 and October 2022 at four institutions. Radiomics features were extracted from grayscale US images and germane features were selected. Subsequently, 11 ML algorithms were separately used with the selected features to construct optimum US radiomics models for risk stratification of the GB masses. Furthermore, we compared the diagnostic performance of these models with the conventional US and contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) models. RESULTS: The optimal XGBoost-based US radiomics model for discriminating neoplastic from non-neoplastic GB lesions showed higher diagnostic performance in terms of areas under the curves (AUCs) than the conventional US model (0.822-0.853 vs. 0.642-0.706, p < 0.05) and potentially decreased unnecessary cholecystectomy rate in a speculative comparison with performing cholecystectomy for lesions sized over 10 mm (2.7-13.8% vs. 53.6-64.9%, p < 0.05) in the validation and test sets. The AUCs of the XGBoost-based US radiomics model for discriminating carcinomas from benign GB lesions were higher than the conventional US model (0.904-0.979 vs. 0.706-0.766, p < 0.05). The XGBoost-US radiomics model performed better than the CEUS model in discriminating GB carcinomas (AUC: 0.995 vs. 0.902, p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: The proposed ML-based US radiomics models possess the potential capacity for risk stratification of GB masses and may reduce the unnecessary cholecystectomy rate and use of CEUS. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The machine learning-based ultrasound radiomics models have potential for risk stratification of gallbladder masses and may potentially reduce unnecessary cholecystectomies. KEY POINTS: • The XGBoost-based US radiomics models are useful for the risk stratification of GB masses. • The XGBoost-based US radiomics model is superior to the conventional US model for discriminating neoplastic from non-neoplastic GB lesions and may potentially decrease unnecessary cholecystectomy rate for lesions sized over 10 mm in comparison with the current consensus guideline. • The XGBoost-based US radiomics model could overmatch CEUS model in discriminating GB carcinomas from benign GB lesions.

RESUMO

Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are considered a promising candidate for energy storage owing to their low cost and similar "rocking chair" mechanism to lithium-ion batteries. However, there is a great lack of suitable and high working performance electrode materials for KIBs. Herein, first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) are applied to evaluate the potential of the B7N5 monolayer as an anode material for KIBs. It is found that B7N5 shows negative adsorption energies for Li/Na/K on its surface. Besides, the B7N5 monolayer can effectively achieve double-layer adsorption for K atoms on both sides of the monolayer surface, while one-layer adsorption for Li and Na. Thus, B7N5 exhibits an ultra-high theoretical capacity of 1471.5 mA h g-1 for KIBs, which is almost the highest value for the anode materials reported in the literature. And the attractive capacity for KIBs is mainly contributed by the multiple empty electron orbitals of the constituting elements of B7N5 and the small distance mismatch. In addition, K atoms display high diffusivities on B7N5 with low energy barriers of 0.10 eV, and the open circuit voltages of 0.14 V for KIBs are also smaller compared with previous research. It is also shown that after adsorbing K, the semiconducting B7N5 monolayer is transformed to a metallic state with good conductivity. Furthermore, despite the large size of K+, the maximum change in the lattice constant of B7N5 is only 1.32%, indicating structural stability and ensuring good cycling stability for KIBs. The above-mentioned results suggest that B7N5 is a potential anode material for KIBs.

RESUMO

The development of novel high specific capacity anode materials is urgently needed for rechargeable metal ion batteries. Herein, S-functionalized V2B as the electrode material for Li/Na/K ion batteries are comprehensively investigated using first-principles calculations. Specifically, V2BS2 was verified with good electrical conductivity via band structure and density of states calculations. Phonon dispersion and ab initio molecular dynamic simulations were performed and confirmed the dynamic and thermal stability of V2BS2. The use of V2BS2 with a high theoretical specific capacity of 606 mA h g-1 for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to the bilayer adsorption of Li atoms is encouraging, which is attributed to the double empty orbitals of the S atoms and small lattice mismatch (1.5%) between the Li layers and substrate. Furthermore, dendrite formation would be well prohibited and safety issues for battery operation would be ensured for V2BS2 as electrode materials because of the low open circuit voltage with 0.37 V. The high charge/discharge rate for LIBs is also achievable owing to the high mobility of adatoms on the surface of V2BS2. Our work not only finds use as a promising material for the field of energy storage, but also provides constructive design strategies for developing high performance anode materials for rechargeable metal ion batteries.
