BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Blood establishments strive to ensure the safety and comfort of blood donors while minimizing adverse events. This review aims to assess the efficacy and effectiveness of eating and/or drinking interventions before, during and/or after blood donation in reducing vasovagal reactions (VVRs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed randomized and non-randomized controlled trials comparing eating and/or drinking interventions to no intervention, placebo or usual practice on (pre-)syncopal VVRs and related symptoms. The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach was used to assess the risk of bias and overall certainty of the evidence. RESULTS: Pre-donation water ingestion likely results in reduced on-site VVRs, compared to no water (2 fewer per 100 donors, moderate-certainty evidence). A pre-donation isotonic drink likely results in reduced VVRs, compared to usual practice (2 fewer per 100 donors, moderate-certainty evidence). Pre-donation salt-loaded sweetened lemon water may result in fewer off-site VVRs, compared to sweetened lemon water only (1 fewer per 100 donors, low-certainty evidence). Pre-donation water and a gel cap containing sucrose with 250 mg caffeine may result in fewer blood donor reaction ratings, compared to pre-donation water only (low-certainty evidence). CONCLUSIONS: Pre-donation plain water ingestion or isotonic drink probably results in a large reduction in on-site and off-site VVRs. Pre-donation water ingestion with caffeine consumption or salt supplementation may result in a VVR reduction, compared to water ingestion only. Future large trials are required to increase the certainty of the effect of these and other interventions in the prevention of VVRs.

Soft drink consumption has become a highly controversial public health issue. Given the pattern of consumption in China, sugar-sweetened beverage is the main type of soft drink consumed. Due to containing high levels of fructose, a soft drink may have a deleterious effect on handgrip strength (HGS) due to oxidative stress, inflammation and insulin resistance. However, few studies show an association between soft drink consumption and HGS in adults. We aimed to investigate the association between soft drink consumption and longitudinal changes in HGS among a Chinese adult population. A longitudinal population-based cohort study (5-year follow-up, median: 3·66 years) was conducted in Tianjin, China. A total of 11 125 participants (56·7 % men) were enrolled. HGS was measured using a handheld digital dynamometer. Soft drink consumption (mainly sugar-containing carbonated beverages) was measured at baseline using a validated FFQ. ANCOVA was used to evaluate the association between soft drink consumption and annual change in HGS or weight-adjusted HGS. After adjusting for multiple confounding factors, the least square means (95 % CI) of annual change in HGS across soft drink consumption frequencies were -0·70 (-2·49, 1·09) for rarely drinks, -0·82 (-2·62, 0·97) for < 1 cup/week and -0·86 (-2·66, 0·93) for ≥ 1 cup/week (Pfor trend < 0·05). Likewise, a similar association was observed between soft drink consumption and annual change in weight-adjusted HGS. The results indicate that higher soft drink consumption was associated with faster HGS decline in Chinese adults.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether traffic light labels and an increased range of healthy beverages, individually and in combination, can increase healthy beverage choices from vending machines. DESIGN: Two studies (n 558, 420) tested whether the provision of traffic light labels (green, amber and red) and an increased range of healthy beverages (from 20 % to 50 % green options), individually and in combination, could increase healthy beverage choices from a digital vending machine display. The studies used a between-subjects experimental design, and a hypothetical beverage choice, a limitation when considering real-world applicability. SETTING: Both studies utilised an online Qualtrics survey that featured a digital vending machine display. PARTICIPANTS: Both studies (n 558, 420) consisted of university students from Flinders University and individuals from a survey recruitment service. RESULTS: Featuring traffic lights did not significantly influence beverage choices (P = 0·074), while increasing the healthy range (P = 0·003, OR = 3·27), and the combination of both, did significantly increase healthier beverage choices (P < 0·001, OR = 4·83). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the traffic light system and increased healthy range are not maximally effective when used on their own, and benefit greatly when combined, to increase healthy beverage choices. It was suggested that the provision of traffic light labels supplied the necessary nutritional information, and the increased healthy range offered greater opportunity to act in accordance with that information. In so doing, the present findings offer a promising pathway for reducing unhealthy beverage consumption.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common clinical condition and an important public health problem. Some epidemiological studies have suggested that soft drinks (SD) intake is associated with NAFLD. However, the evidence is inconsistent. Our objective was to assess the association between SD consumption and the risk of NAFLD in a Mexican adult population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,759 participants from the Health Workers Cohort Study (HWCS) were included in the analyses. SD intake was measured using a validated food frequency questionnaire. We classified SD consumption as follows: a) less than 1 serving per week, b) 1 to less than 3.5 servings per week, and c) 3.5 or more servings per week. Hepatic steatosis index (HSI) was calculated based on sex, BMI, and blood transaminase levels, and was categorized as NAFLD ≥ 36. To assess the relation between SD and NAFLD, we followed two approaches: fixed effects logistic regression and generalized estimating equations. RESULTS: After adjusting for demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and dietary intake, the odds ratio (OR) and 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI) for NAFLD were 1.26 (95 % CI: 1.08, 1.48) for 1 to less than 3.5 servings per week and 1.42 (95 % CI: 1.19, 1.69) for ≥3.5 servings/week category in both sexes. When stratifying the analysis by sex, we observed that the association tended to be greater in men than in women. CONCLUSIONS: The results from our prospective study indicate that SD consumption is associated with an increased risk of NAFLD.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hyperuricemia in China has been consistently increasing, particularly among the younger generation. The excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with hyperuricemia. This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of Chinese young adults regarding sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and the correlation with hyperuricemia. METHODS: This cross-sectional investigation was conducted from June 28th, 2023, to July 21st, 2023, and enrolled Chinese young adults. Demographics and KAP were evaluated using a questionnaire (Cronbach's α = 0.787). Factors influencing KAP scores were analyzed using multivariable analyses. RESULTS: A total of 1288 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The median knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 16 (12,19)/22, 22 (20,24)/30, and 27.5 (23,31.75)/40. The multivariable analysis showed that bachelor's/associate education (OR = 1.912, 95%CI: 1.128-3.239), white collar/employee (OR = 0.147, 95%CI: 0.105-0.206), educator (OR = 0.300, 95%CI: 0.174-0.518), healthcare worker (OR = 0.277, 95%CI: 0.188-0.407), not suffering from hyperuricemia (OR = 0.386, 95%CI: 0.253-0.590), and not having gout (OR = 0.456, 95%CI: 0.282-0.736) were independently associated with knowledge. Age 26-30 (OR = 1.470, 95%CI: 1.052-2.052), age 31-35 (OR = 1.489, 95%CI: 1.097-2.022), age 36-40 (OR = 0.328, 95%CI: 1.010-1.746), age 41-44 (OR = 1.548, 95%CI: 1.091-2.198), and not having hyperuricemia (OR = 0.512, 95%CI: 0.345-0.760) were independently associated with attitude. White collar/employee (OR = 0.386, 95%CI: 0.285-0.521), educator (OR = 0.534, 95%CI: 0.317-0.899), healthcare worker (OR = 0.341, 95%CI: 0.236-0.493), having siblings (OR = 0.725, 95%CI: 0.573-0.917), and not suffering from hyperuricemia (OR = 0.442, 95%CI: 0.296-0.659), were independently associated with practice. CONCLUSION: Chinese young adults display moderate KAP toward sugar-sweetened beverages. Notably, an association was observed between hyperuricemia and each KAP dimension.

BACKGROUND: Frequent consumption of Energy Drinks (EDs) is associated with numerous health problems, including overweight and obesity, particularly among children and adolescents. The extensive promotion, wide accessibility, and relatively low cost of EDs have significantly increased their popularity among this age group. This paper examines policies/programs that, directly and indirectly, contribute to reducing ED consumption in children and adolescents and shares global experiences to help policymakers adopt evidence-based policies. METHODS: A systematic search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from January 2000 to June 2024, along with reputable international organization websites, to find literature on policies aimed at reducing ED consumption among children and adolescents. All sources meeting the inclusion criteria were included without restrictions. Titles and abstracts were initially screened, followed by a full-text review. After evaluating the quality of the selected studies, data were extracted and, along with information from the selected documents, compiled into a table, detailing the country, policy type, and the effectiveness and weaknesses of each policy. RESULTS: Out of 12166 reviewed studies and documents, 84 studies and 70 documents met the inclusion criteria. 73 countries and territories have implemented policies like taxation, sales bans, school bans, labeling, and marketing restrictions on EDs. Most employ fiscal measures, reducing consumption despite enforcement challenges. Labeling, access restrictions, and marketing bans are common but face issues like black markets. CONCLUSION: This scoping review outlines diverse strategies adopted by countries to reduce ED consumption among children and teenagers, such as taxation, school bans, sales restrictions, and labeling requirements. While heightened awareness of ED harms has reinforced policy efforts, many Asian and African nations lack such measures, some policies remain outdated for over a decade, and existing policies face several challenges. These challenges encompass industry resistance, governmental disagreements, public opposition, economic considerations, and the intricacies of policy design. Considering this, countries should tailor policies to their cultural and social contexts, taking into account each policy's strengths and weaknesses to avoid loopholes. Inter-sectoral cooperation, ongoing policy monitoring, updates, and public education campaigns are essential to raise awareness and ensure effective implementation.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent athletes' values ​regarding health behaviors, including their attitudes toward doping, are largely derived from those of their parents. Therefore, clarifying the factors that affect parents' intentions regarding their children's medicine intake and nutrition can help elucidate the process of forming values ​​of healthy behaviors in young athletes. METHODS: Between March 8 and March 9, 2021, an online questionnaire survey was conducted via an Internet research company; data from 2,000 residents in Japan were collected. Participants were male and female residents aged 30-59 years with children in elementary or high school and belonging to sports clubs. The survey items included respondent's and child's basic information, respondent's health literacy, and level of sports in which the respondent and child were (or are) engaged. Respondents were also asked if they would like their children to receive prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines, vaccines, supplements, or energy drinks. Logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the relationship between respondents' basic information and health literacy and their intention to receive prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines, vaccines, supplements, and energy drinks. RESULTS: Higher parental health literacy was associated with higher children's willingness to receive prescription drugs (odds ratio [OR] = 1.025, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.016-1.035), over-the-counter drugs (OR = 1.012, 95% CI: 1.003-1.021), prescription herbal medicines (OR = 1.021, 95% CI: 1.021-1.030), over-the-counter herbal medicines (OR = 1.012, 95% CI: 1.003-1.021), and vaccines (OR = 1.025, 95% CI: 1.016-1.035). Conversely, the children's intention to receive energy drinks (OR = 0.990, 95% CI: 0.980-1.000) decreased significantly. As the child's athletic level increased, parents' willingness for their children to receive oral prescription medicines decreased (OR = 0.886, 95% CI: 0.791-0.992) and that to receive supplements (OR = 1.492, 95% CI: 1.330-1.673) and energy drinks significantly increased (OR = 1.480, 95% CI: 1.307-1.676). CONCLUSION: Health literacy of adolescent athletes' parents is associated with their children's willingness to receive medicines. Healthcare providers should counsel parents of adolescent athletes to allow their children to receive necessary drug treatments and prevent doping violations caused by supplement intake.

BACKGROUND: Modern perioperative guidelines encourage drinking oral carbohydrates 2 h before management. Nevertheless, research on the safety of preoperative carbohydrate drinks, particularly in extremely elderly patients is lacking. We aimed to evaluate the safety of carbohydrate drinks 2 h before surgery in extremely elderly patients (≥ 80 years) using gastric ultrasonography. METHODS: We conducted a randomized prospective comparative study of 70 patients aged over 80 years who were scheduled for total knee arthroplasty, hip fracture or humerus fracture surgery. These patients were randomly assigned to the carbohydrate group (n = 35), which fasted from midnight, except for drinking 355 mL of a carbohydrate-containing fluid 2 h before surgery, or the fasting group (n = 35), which fasted from midnight and drank no fluid before surgery. The primary outcome of the study was the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the gastric antrum in the right lateral decubitus position (RLDP) before surgery. The secondary outcomes included CSA in the supine position, intraoperative blood glucose levels and their variability coefficients, Perlas grade, and the visual analog scale of subjective feelings. RESULTS: The CSA in the RLDP and supine positions revealed no differences between the carbohydrate and fasting groups at 0 h preoperatively (P > 0.05). In the qualitative assessment, preoperative 0-h Perlas grading did not differ significantly between the groups (P > 0.05). From 2 h before surgery to transfer out of the post-anesthesia care unit, the average blood glucose level of patients in the carbohydrate group was significantly higher than that in the fasting group (P < 0.001) but remained within the normal range. Moreover, the blood glucose variability coefficient was significantly lower in the carbohydrate group than in the fasting group (P = 0.009). Oral intake of 355 mL carbohydrates before surgery significantly relieved patients' feelings (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Preoperative consumption of carbohydrate drinks 2 h before surgery is safe in "healthy" extremely elderly patients. In addition, preoperative drinking has potential value in maintaining ideal blood glucose levels and stable blood glucose fluctuations perioperatively and improving subjective perceptions of preoperative preparation. This finding warrants further investigation in clinical practice. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (Registration Number ChiCTR1900024812), first registered on 29/07/2019.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption by children and adolescents is receiving increasing attention. It may cause dyslipidemia, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, the association between alcohol consumption and blood lipids in children and adolescents is unclear, and so we aimed to characterize this association. METHODS: Data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey were extracted from children and adolescents aged 7-18 years for whom information was available on alcohol consumption. The population was divided into drinking and nondrinking groups. The χ2, Student's t, or Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare groups. Univariate and multivariate linear regression and propensity score matching (PSM) analysis were used to identify the association between alcohol consumption and blood lipids. RESULTS: This study included 408 children and adolescents with 35 drinkers and 373 nondrinkers. The drinkers had significantly lower values of total cholesterol (TC) (3.8 mmol/L for nondrinkers versus 3.5 mmol/L for drinkers, p = 0.002) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (1.3 mmol/L for nondrinkers versus 1.2 mmol/L for drinkers, p = 0.007), but not for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (2.1 mmol/L for nondrinkers versus 2.0 mmol/L for drinkers, p = 0.092) or triglyceride (TG) (0.9 mmol/L for nondrinkers versus 0.8 mmol/L for drinkers, p = 0.21). The univariate and multivariate analyses led to the same conclusions. After PSM there was still a significant negative association between alcohol consumption and TC or HDL-C. CONCLUSION: Alcohol consumption in children and adolescents exhibited significant negative associated with TC and HDL-C, but not with LDL-C or TG. These findings need to be confirmed in future prospective research, and the health effects of blood lipid changes caused by drinking in children and adolescents need to be clarified.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine if motivations to use alcohol (coping and social motivations) mediate the relationship between trait mindfulness and a variety of alcohol-related consequences and to determine if the relationship between motivations to use alcohol and alcohol-related consequences is moderated by alcohol use. We determined the factor structure of positive and negative consequences of alcohol use and used this structure as outcomes across eight moderated mediation models. METHODS: Data were obtained from 296 undergraduate students to confirm the alcohol-related consequences factor structure and to test eight moderated-mediation models. RESULTS: Four alcohol-related consequences scales (romantic/sexual, positive, mild negative, and severe negative consequences) were confirmed. The motive of drinking to cope significantly mediated the relationship between trait mindfulness and all four of the alcohol-related consequences scales. Drinking to socialize did not significantly mediate the relationship between trait mindfulness and all of the alcohol-related consequences scales. CONCLUSIONS: The identified four-factor structure suggests that alcohol-related consequences should be assessed in a more specific manner. Additionally, different motivations for alcohol use relate differentially to trait mindfulness and different alcohol-related consequences; drinking to cope is particularly problematic for this population. Future research on the usefulness of promoting mindfulness to reduce problematic drinking appears warranted.

Soft drink and alcohol consumption have become significant public health issues. This study aimed to explore the mediating role of decision-making processes in the relationship between trait impulsivity and calorie dense beverage consumption. Participants comprised a community sample of 300 adults (aged 19-75). They completed self-report measures assessing impulsivity (SUPPS-P), reward sensitivity (RST-PQ), and participated in decision-making tasks related to risk propensity (BART), short-term strategy preference (IGT), and delay discounting rate. Beverage consumption was calculated using the BEVQ-15. Impulsivity was conceptualised within the framework of the two-factor model as consisting of rash impulsivity and reward sensitivity. Both facets of impulsivity were positively associated with both alcohol and soft drink consumption, and each independently predicted consumption of these beverages. Additionally, there was a significant interaction between rash impulsivity and reward sensitivity on soft drink consumption. Importantly, there were significant indirect effects of both rash impulsivity and reward sensitivity on soft drink consumption via delay discounting. The results support the logic of the two-factor model of impulsivity in the prediction of consumption of unhealthy beverages. Furthermore, the mediating role of delay discounting supports the hypothesis that personality traits can pass through to behaviour via decision-making processes. Further research should extend these findings to other consumption domains in both clinical and non-clinical populations.

Malnutrition is one of the major factors of bone and cartilage disorders. Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) processing waste is a cheap and highly promising source of bioactive substances, including collagen-derived peptides and amino acids, for bone and cartilage structure stabilization. The addition of these substances to a functional drink is one of the ways to achieve their fast intestinal absorption. Collagen hydrolysate was obtained via enzymatic hydrolysis, ultrafiltration, freeze-drying, and grinding to powder. The lyophilized hydrolysate was a light gray powder with high protein content (>90%), including collagen (about 85% of total protein) and a complete set of essential and non-essential amino acids. The hydrolysate had no observed adverse effect on human mesenchymal stem cell morphology, viability, or proliferation. The hydrolysate was applicable as a protein food supply or a structure-forming food component due to the presence of collagen fiber fragments. An isotonic fitness drink (osmolality 298.1 ± 2.1 mOsm/L) containing hydrolysate and vitamin C as a cofactor in collagen biosynthesis was prepared. The addition of the hydrolysate did not adversely affect its organoleptic parameters. The production of such functional foods and drinks is one of the beneficial ways of fish processing waste utilization.

Background: One enforcement strategy used to address illegal sales of alcohol to intoxicated patrons (i.e., overservice) is Place of Last Drink (POLD). When law enforcement responds to an alcohol-related incident, they ask persons involved in the incident where they had their last drink; POLD data can then be used to track patterns of overservice.Methods: We evaluated potential effects of a POLD initiative in one state (USA) on the attitudes and perceptions of serving staff (i.e., bartenders and servers) about their experiences in refusing sales to intoxicated customers. We conducted interviews with 44 serving staff across 24 communities (14 communities that participated in the POLD initiative and 10 comparison communities). We analyzed the interview transcripts using a qualitative matrix to identify major themes.Results: We found few differences across the two study conditions, with interview participants having no apparent awareness of POLD and many stating that overservice occurs frequently without law enforcement getting involved. One difference we identified was serving staff from communities in the POLD initiative reporting generally positive experiences with their managers when refusing sales to intoxicated patrons, whereas serving staff in comparison communities more commonly saying they were overruled by their managers. It is possible that these differences are the result of the POLD initiative; however, more research is needed.Conclusions: In general, serving staff across communities share many similar perceptions and attitudes around overservice. These findings can inform future implementation of POLD and other strategies to reduce overservice of alcohol.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of data surrounding the use of therapeutic caffeine among adults admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine reported caffeine use and withdrawal symptoms among patients admitted to the ICU to inform future prospective interventional trials. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional survey design, where a survey was conducted by a registered dietitian among 100 adult patients admitted to an ICU in Brisbane, Australia. RESULTS: The median age of patients was 59.8 y (interquartile range: 44.0-70.0), and 68% were male. Ninety-nine percent of patients had daily consumption of caffeine with a median 338 mg (interquartile range: 162-504). Caffeine consumption was self-reported in 89% of patients and was uncovered by detailed identification in 10%. Almost one-third (29%) reported caffeine withdrawal symptoms while admitted to intensive care. Common withdrawal symptoms reported were headaches, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, and constipation. Eighty-eight percent of patients reported willingness to participate in future studies of therapeutic caffeine if they were admitted to the ICU. Preferred methods of parenteral and enteral routes of administration varied by patient and illness characteristics. CONCLUSIONS: Patients admitted to this ICU were ubiquitous consumers of caffeine before admission, and one-tenth were unaware. Patients viewed trials of therapeutic caffeine as highly acceptable. The results provide important baseline information for future prospective studies.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Puerariae Flos and Chrysanthemum are widely utilized in herbal teas for hangover relief and heat-clearing detoxification. In this study, a new drink has been developed, employing these two flowers as primary raw materials. The objective of this study was to optimize the optimal formula, extraction process, and preparation method for the drink. The optimization of the formula and extraction process was guided by the utilization of the total flavonoids content in the water decoction of the two flowers as an indicator. Based on the sensory evaluation criteria, including color, smell, taste, and state of the drink, the water decoction addition, honey addition, and citric acid addition were optimized by single-factor experiments and orthogonal experiments. The best formula and extraction process was 10 g of Puerariae Flos, 10 g of Chrysanthemum, 48 min of decocting time, and 615 mL of water. The optimal preparation process consisted of 30% water decoction, 8% honey, and 0.025% citric acid. Subsequently, a golden yellow, transparent, and stable liquid was produced, possessing a sweet taste along with the distinctive aroma and flavor of Puerariae Flos and Chrysanthemum. Background and Aims: Starvation of long duration during third trimester of pregnancy is undesirable as it is associated with accelerated fasting leading to hypoglycemia, raised plasma free fatty acid (FFA) levels, and increased plasma/urinary ketones. Carbohydrate (CHO)-rich drinks given preoperatively may ameliorate these deleterious effects. The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) guidelines for perioperative care recommend that oral CHO fluid supplementation 2 h before cesarean delivery may be offered to nondiabetic pregnant women. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of preoperative oral CHO loading for the prevention of perioperative ketoacidosis in elective cesarean deliveries. Material and Methods: One hundred and twenty American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) II/III parturients undergoing elective cesarean section under subarachnoid block (SAB) were divided into two groups of 60 each after they gave written informed consent. Group A parturients received 400 ml of filtered water 2 h before surgery. Group B parturients received 400 ml of nonparticulate CHO drink 2 h before surgery. The primary outcome was the incidence of ketonuria studied by the dipstick method. Secondary outcomes included hunger and thirst scores, anxiety score, dominant hand grip strength, and the quality of recovery score. Results: The urine ketone levels were positive (+1) in 8.3% parturients in group A and 1.7% parturients in the CHO group (P value- 0.094). The hunger and thirst scores as well as the modified Beck's anxiety scores were significantly lower in the CHO group (P value- 0.002). Dominant hand grip strength was preserved in both the groups (P value- 0.827). The quality of recovery score was significantly improved in the CHO group (P value- 0.002). No serious adverse effects were noted in either group. Conclusion: Oral CHO drink is safe when administered 2 h before uncomplicated elective cesarean deliveries. It may have a positive influence on a wide range of perioperative markers of clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Incomplete esophageal emptying is a key variable predicting symptom relapse after achalasia treatment. Although optimally evaluated using the timed barium esophagogram (TBE), incomplete esophageal emptying can also be identified on rapid drink challenge (RDC) performed during high-resolution manometry. METHODS: We evaluated if RDC differentiates complete from incomplete esophageal emptying in treated patients with achalasia, against a TBE gold standard. Unselected treated patients with achalasia with both TBE (200 mL of low-density barium suspension) and RDC (200 mL of water in sitting position) were enrolled in 5 tertiary referral centers. TBE barium column height at 1, 2, and 5 minutes were compared with RDC variables: pressurizations >20 mmHg, maximal RDC pressurization, proportion of RDC time occupied by pressurizations, trans-esophagogastric junction gradient, and integrated relaxation pressure. RESULTS: Of 175 patients recruited (mean age, 59 years; 47% female), 138 (79%) were in clinical remission. Complete TBE emptying occurred in 45.1% at 1 minute, 64.0% at 2 minutes, and 73.1% at 5 minutes. RDC integrated relaxation pressure correlated strongly with TBE column height, and a 10-mmHg threshold discriminated complete from incomplete emptying at all 3 TBE time points with area under receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.85, 0.87, and 0.85, respectively. This threshold had high negative predictive values for complete emptying (88% at 2 minutes, 94% at 5 minutes), and modest positive predictive values for incomplete emptying (77% at 2 minutes, 62% at 5 minutes). CONCLUSIONS: RDC during high-resolution manometry is an effective surrogate for TBE in assessing esophageal emptying in treated patients with achalasia.

BACKGROUND: Acceptability and tolerance of bowel preparation is critical to overcome patient hesitancy in undergoing colon cancer screening and surveillance colonoscopy. To improve patient experience, a new sports drink-flavored bowel preparation containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) and sulfate salts (FPSS) was developed to provide a similar experience to a commonly used but not United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved PEG and sports drink bowel preparation (PEG-SD), while also achieving improved cleansing efficacy. METHODS: This FPSS preparation, approved by the FDA in June 2023, was evaluated in a non-randomized Phase 2 study in which 40 patients requiring colonoscopy were prepared with FPSS and 20 with PEG-SD. RESULTS: Overall cleansing success was high with FPSS based on unblinded local endoscopist assessment (93%) and blinded central reading (97%), exceeding PEG-SD which achieved success rates of 84% (local read), 74% and 68% (blinded central reads). Similar differences favoring FPSS were seen for excellent preparations and cleansing success by colon segment as rated by local endoscopists. Both preparations were well-tolerated, with 93% of FPSS patients rating their preparation as Tolerable to Very Easy to consume, compared to 100% of PEG-SD. Patients who had previously taken a preparation for colonoscopy found FPSS and PEG-SD better than their prior preparation (73% and 70%, respectively) and nearly all would request their assigned study preparation again in the future. About two thirds of FPSS patients agreed that the preparation tasted similar to a sports drink. CONCLUSION: The new sports drink-like flavored preparation compares favorably to PEG-SD for bowel cleansing efficacy while achieving similar patient satisfaction. The study was registered at www. Manganese oxide nanoparticles (MnO Nps), sonochemical synthesized and characterized in our laboratory, are proposed as fluorescent sensor for selenium (Se) determination. The new methodology has been developed based on the enhancing effect of the Se(IV) on fluorescent emission of MnO Nps. Experimental variables that influence on fluorimetric sensitivity were optimized. The calibration graph using zeroth order regression was linear from 0.189 ng L-1 to 8.00 × 103 µg L-1, with correlation coefficient better than 0.99. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection and quantification were of 0.062 ng L-1 and 0.189 ng L-1, respectively. The trueness of the methodology was assessed through standard addition method obtaining recovery near to 100%. This method showed good tolerance to foreign ions, particularly to Se(VI), and was applied to determination of Se(IV) trace in food and drink samples with satisfactory results. With the intention of preserving the environment from harmful effects, a degradation study of the used nanomaterials has been included for their subsequent disposal.

AIM: Differential metabolic risk factors of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in nonobese male adolescents were analyzed examining relationships between NAFLD and clinical parameters of metabolic syndrome, including exercise and soft drink consumption, in male adolescents. METHODS: In total, 134 male university students (nonobese, n = 78; obese, n = 56) who underwent the first-year health checkup were divided into the NAFLD and non-NAFLD groups based on abdominal ultrasonography (AUS) findings. Relationships between NAFLD and metabolic parameters, including body mass index (BMI) and AUS score, were examined in nonobese students. RESULTS: Metabolic factors associated with hypertension, abdominal fat, liver damage, dyslipidemia, and impaired glucose tolerance were significantly less common in nonobese students than in obese students. The aforementioned factors and soft drink consumption were significantly more common in the NAFLD group than in the non-NAFLD group. The univariate and multivariate analyses of nonobese students showed that the triglyceride level (odds ratio [OR], 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.10, p = 0.001) was higher and soft drink consumption (OR, 36.8; 95% CI, 3.69-368, p < 0.001) was more common in the NAFLD group than the non-NAFLD group. CONCLUSIONS: Triglyceride level and soft drink consumption could aid in the detection of NAFLD in nonobese male adolescents. Our findings could provide useful information related to NAFLD and metabolic syndrome in nonobese adolescents.
