BACKGROUND: Sagittal and coronal standing radiographs have been the standard imaging for assessing spinal alignment. However, their disadvantages include distortion at the image edges and low interobserver reliability in some parameters. EOS® is a low-dose biplanar digital radiographic imaging system that can avoid distortion by obtaining high-definition images. METHODS: This study aimed to evaluate spinopelvic parameters in conventional lateral C1S1 upright radiographs and EOS® images and compare them. Patients with non-deformity changes were subjected to routine clinical examinations. Plain AP and lateral X-ray radiographs were obtained along the entire spine length. Patients were also referred for full-length EOS® of the spine. Thoracic Kyphosis (TK), Lumbar Lordosis (LL), Pelvic Tilt (PT), Sacral Slope (SS), Pelvic Incidence (PI), and Sagittal Vertical Axis (SVA) were measured in the two studies by an orthopedic surgeon and a radiologist using PACS software. Also, the orthopedic surgeon evaluated the studies again after two weeks. Intra- and inter-observer reliability was then assessed using the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Also, the coefficient of variation was used to assess intra- and inter-observer reliability. Bland-Altman plots were drawn for each parameter. RESULTS: The mean age was 48.2 ± 6.6 years. Among the 50 patients, 30 (60%) were female. The mean ICC for TK, LL, PT, SS, PI, and SVA in EOS® images are 0.95, 0.95, 0.92, 0.90, 0.94, and 0.98, respectively, and in C1S1 radiography images, it was 0.92, 0.87, 0.94, 0.88, 0.93, and 0.98, respectively which shows good to excellent results. The coefficient of variation for intraobserver reliability was relatively low (< 18.6%), while it showed higher percentages in evaluating interobserver reliability (< 54.5%). Also, the Bland-Altman plot showed good agreement for each parameter. CONCLUSION: Spinopelvic parameters, e.g., TK, LL, SS, PI, and SS, in EOS® are reliable and comparable to those in conventional lateral upright C1S1 radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Physiological thoracic kyphosis (TK) allows sagittal balance of human body. Unlike lumbar lordosis (LL), TK has been relatively neglected in the literature. EOS is an imaging technique employing high-sensitivity xenon particles, featured by low-dose exposure combined with high accuracy compared to conventional radiography. The aim of this study was to investigate predictors of TK in patients with phyiological spine morphology using EOS imaging. METHODS: EOS images of 455 patients without spinal anomalies were retrospectively assessed for TK (T1- T12), upper thoracic kyphosis (UTK, T1-T5), lower thoracic kyphosis (LTK, T5-T12), LL (L1-S1) and pelvic incidence (PI). The latter curves were measured by two researchers separately and the average of the two measurements was used for further analysis. Spearman non-parametric correlation was estimated for age, PI, LL, LTK, UTK and TK. Multiple robust linear regression analysis was employed to estimate TK, controlling for the effect of age, sex, LL and LTK. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 28.3 ± 19.2 years and 302 (66.4%) of them were females. The mean TK, UTK and LTK was 45.5° ± 9.3, 16 ± 7.4° and 29.7° ± 8.9, respectively. The mean UTK in people under 40 years of age was 17.0° ± 7.2, whereas for patients 40+ years old it was 13.6° ± 7.4. At univariable analysis TK positively correlated with UTK (p<0.001), LTK (p<0.001) an LL (p<0.001). At multivariable linear regression TK increased with LTK (RC = 0.67; 95%CI: 0.59; 0.75) or LL (RC = 0.12; 95%CI: 0.06; 0.18), whereas it decreased with age (RC = -0.06; 95%CI: -0.09;-0.02). CONCLUSION: If EOS technology is available, the above linear regression model could be used to estimate TK based upon information on age, sex, LL and LTK. Alternatively, TK could be estimated by adding to LTK 17.0° ± 7.4 for patients < 40 years of age, or 13.6° ± 7.4 in patients 40 + years old. The evidence from the present study may be used as reference for research purposes and clinical practice, including spine examination of particular occupational categories or athletes.

BACKGROUND: Sagittal balance, commonly impaired in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) patients, is typically assessed using the sagittal vertical axis (SVA) with EOS imaging. However, to limit X-ray exposure and medical costs, it could be interesting to evaluate the capacity of quantified motion analysis to estimate the 3D modeling of SVA in patients with symptomatic LSS. METHODS: An estimation of the SVA in patients with LSS was performed with 3D motion analysis. SVA and "C7_PSI" (orthogonal horizontal distance between the vertical lines through the markers of the C7 vertebra and the middle of the posterosuperior iliac spine) were measured on 37 LSS patients using EOS radiography and postural and 3D motion analysis, respectively. Multiple stepwise linear regressions were performed with EOS SVA according to age, body mass index, C7_PSI and/or postural variables. RESULTS: A highly significant relationship was found between SVA and C7_PSI, mediolateral amplitude of CoP displacements and age (adjusted R²=0.69, p < 0.0001). While the postural analysis did not reveal significant relationships, the model using 3D parameters revealed significant relationships between radiographic SVA and C7_PSI and age (adjusted R²=0.65, p < 0.0001). 3D motion parameters with or without postural parameters may explain more than 65% of the variance seen in EOS imaging performed on LSS patients. CONCLUSIONS: These promising results in LSS patients suggest that the estimation of SVA with 3D motion analysis offers an alternative to EOS. In addition, SVA could be assessed at rest and during dynamic tasks. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study has been published in Clinical Trial registration (reference NCT03194607).

OBJECTIVE: Distances and angles measured from long-leg radiographs (LLR) are important for surgical decision-making. However, projectional radiography suffers from distortion, potentially generating differences between measurement and true anatomical dimension. These phenomena are not uniform between conventional radiography (CR) digital radiography (DR) and fan-beam technology (EOS). We aimed to identify differences between these modalities in an experimental setup. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hemiskeleton was stabilized using an external fixator in neutral, valgus and varus knee alignment. Ten images were acquired for each alignment and each modality: one CR setup, two different DR systems, and an EOS. A total of 1680 measurements were acquired and analyzed. RESULTS: We observed great differences for dimensions and angles between the 4 modalities. Femoral head diameter measurements varied in the range of > 5 mm depending on the modality, with EOS being the closest to the true anatomical dimension. With functional leg length, a difference of 8.7% was observed between CR and EOS and with the EOS system being precise in the vertical dimension on physical-technical grounds, this demonstrates significant projectional magnification with CR-LLR. The horizontal distance between the medial malleoli varied by 20 mm between CR and DR, equating to 21% of the mean. CONCLUSIONS: Projectional distortion resulting in variations approaching 21% of the mean indicate, that our confidence on measurements from standing LLR may not be justified. It appears likely that among the tested equipment, EOS-generated images are closest to the true anatomical situation most of the time.

Schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) were considered as two neurodevelopmental disorders and had shared clinical features. we hypothesized that they have some common atypical brain functions and the purpose of this study was to explored the shared brain spontaneous activity strength alterations in early onset schizophrenia (EOS) and ASD in the children and adolescents with a multi-center large-sample study. A total of 171 EOS patients (aged 14.25 ± 1.87), 188 ASD patients (aged 9.52 ± 5.13), and 107 healthy controls (aged 11.52 ± 2.82) had scanned with Resting-fMRI and analyzed surface-based amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF). Results showed that both EOS and ASD had hypoactivity in the primary sensorimotor regions (bilateral primary and early visual cortex, left ventral visual stream, left primary auditory cortex) and hyperactivity in the high-order transmodal regions (bilateral SFL, bilateral DLPFC, right frontal eye fields), and bilateral thalamus. EOS had more severe abnormality than ASD. This study revealed shared functional abnormalities in the primary sensorimotor regions and the high-order transmodal regions in EOS and ASD, which provided neuroimaging evidence of common changes in EOS and ASD, and may help with better early recognition and precise treatment for EOS and ASD.

OBJECTIVES: Health technology assessment (HTA) is a systematic process used to evaluate the properties and effects of healthcare technologies within their intended use context. This paper describes the adoption of HTA process to assess the adoption of the EOSedge™ system in clinical practice. METHODS: The EOSedge™ system is a digital radiography system that delivers whole-body, high-quality 2D/3D biplanar images covering the complete set of musculoskeletal and orthopedic exams. Full HTA model was chosen using the EUnetHTA Core Model® version 3.0. The HTA Core Model organizes the information into nine domains. Information was researched and obtained by consulting the manufacturers' user manuals, scientific literature, and institutional sites for regulatory aspects. RESULTS: All nine domains of the EUnetHTA Core Model® helped conduct the HTA of the EOSedge, including (1) description and technical characteristics of the technology; (2) health problem and current clinical practice; (3) safety; (4) clinical effectiveness; (5) organizational aspects; (6) economic evaluation; (7) impact on the patient; (8) ethical aspects; and (9) legal aspects. CONCLUSIONS: EOS technologies may be a viable alternative to conventional radiographs. EOSedge has the same intended use and similar indications for use, technological characteristics, and operation principles as the EOS System and provides significant dose reduction factors for whole spine imaging compared to the EOS System without compromising image quality. Regarding the impact of EOS imaging on patient outcomes, most studies aim to establish technical ability without evaluating their ability to improve patient outcomes; thus, more studies on this aspect are warranted.

The transcriptional regulators that drive regulatory T (Treg) cell development and function remain partially understood. Helios (Ikzf2) and Eos (Ikzf4) are closely-related members of the Ikaros family of transcription factors. They are highly expressed in CD4+ Treg cells and functionally important for Treg cell biology, as mice deficient for either Helios or Eos are susceptible to autoimmune diseases. However, it remains unknown if these factors exhibit specific or partially redundant functions in Treg cells. Here we show that mice with germline deletions of both Ikzf2 and Ikzf4 are not very different from animals with single Ikzf2 or Ikzf4 deletions. Double knockout Treg cells differentiate normally, and efficiently suppress effector T cell proliferation in vitro. Both Helios and Eos are required for optimal Foxp3 protein expression. Surprisingly, Helios and Eos regulate different, largely non-overlapping, sets of genes. Only Helios is required for proper Treg cell aging, as Helios deficiency results in reduced Treg cell frequencies in the spleen of older animals. These results indicate that Helios and Eos are required for distinct aspects of Treg cell function.

Neonatal early-onset sepsis (EOS) has unfortunately been the third leading cause of neonatal death worldwide. The current study is aimed at discovering reliable biomarkers for the diagnosis of neonatal EOS through transcriptomic analysis of publicly available datasets. Whole blood mRNA expression profiling of neonatal EOS patients in the GSE25504 dataset was downloaded and analyzed. The binomial LASSO model was constructed to select genes that most accurately predicted neonatal EOS. Then, ROC curves were generated to assess the performance of the predictive features in differentiating between neonatal EOS and normal infants. Finally, the miRNA-mRNA network was established to explore the potential biological mechanisms of genes within the model. Four genes (CST7, CD3G, CD247, and ANKRD22) were identified that most accurately predicted neonatal EOS and were subsequently used to construct a diagnostic model. ROC analysis revealed that this diagnostic model performed well in differentiating between neonatal EOS and normal infants in both the GSE25504 dataset and our clinical cohort. Finally, the miRNA-mRNA network consisting of the four genes and potential target miRNAs was constructed. Through bioinformatics analysis, a diagnostic four-gene model that can accurately distinguish neonatal EOS in newborns with bacterial infection was constructed, which can be used as an auxiliary test for diagnosing neonatal EOS with bacterial infection in the future. CONCLUSION: In the current study, we analyzed gene expression profiles of neonatal EOS patients from public databases to develop a genetic model for predicting sepsis, which could provide insight into early molecular changes and biological mechanisms of neonatal EOS. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Infants with suspected EOS usually receive empiric antibiotic therapy directly after birth. • When blood cultures are negative after 48 to 72 hours, empirical antibiotic treatment is often halted. Needless to say, this is not a short time. Additionally, because of the concern for inadequate clinical sepsis production and the limited sensitivity of blood cultures, the duration of antibiotic therapy for the kid is typically extended. WHAT IS NEW: • We established a 4-gene diagnostic model of neonatal EOS with bacterial infection by bioinformatics analysis method. The model has better diagnostic performance compared with conventional inflammatory indicators such as CRP, Hb, NEU%, and PCT.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal circulating eosinophil (EOS) data impacted by the COVID-19 vaccine, the predictive role of circulating EOS in the disease severity, and its association with T cell immunity in patients with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2 variant infection in Shanghai, China. METHODS: We collected a cohort of 1,157 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron/BA.2 variant in Shanghai, China. These patients were diagnosed or admitted between Feb 20, 2022, and May 10, 2022, and were classified as asymptomatic (n = 705), mild (n = 286) and severe (n = 166) groups. We compiled and analyzed data of patients' clinical demographic characteristics, laboratory findings, and clinical outcomes. RESULTS: COVID-19 vaccine reduced the incidence of severe cases. Severe patients were shown to have declined peripheral blood EOS. Both the 2 doses and 3 doses of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines promoted the circulating EOS levels. In particular, the 3rd booster shot of inactivated COVID-19 vaccine was shown to have a sustained promoting effect on circulating EOS. Univariate analysis showed that there was a significant difference in age, underlying comorbidities, EOS, lymphocytes, CRP, CD4, and CD8 T cell counts between the mild and the severe patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and ROC curve analysis indicate that circulating EOS (AUC = 0.828, p = 0.025), the combination of EOS and CD4 T cell (AUC = 0.920, p = 0.017) can predict the risk of disease severity in patients with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2 variant infection. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 vaccine promotes circulating EOS and reduces the risk of severe illness, and particularly the 3rd booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine sustainedly promotes EOS. Circulating EOS, along with T cell immunity, may have a predictive value for the disease severity in SARS-CoV-2 Omicron infected patients.

PURPOSE: Hybrid constructs with sublaminar bands have recently regained popularity as an alternative to all-screw construct for correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The aim of this study is to evaluate the ability of hybrid constructs with sublaminar bands to achieve a tridimensional correction of the scoliotic deformity. Our hypothesis is that hybrid construct with sublaminar bands are able to achieve a substantial derotation of the apical vertebrae, while preserving the thoracic kyphosis. METHODS: A prospective evaluation of 50 consecutive cases (41 F, 9 M, mean age 14.7 ± 2 years) of AIS correction with hybrid construct was performed. In all cases, sublaminar bands were used at the apex of the main curve on concave side. All patients underwent pre and postoperative X-rays with EOS System, with full 3D reconstruction. Spinopelvic parameters and axial rotation of the vertebrae were measured pre and postoperatively. RESULTS: 2.7 ± 0.9 mean sublaminar bands were used per patient. Mean correction of deformity was 50 ± 9.5%. on the coronal plane. The mean axial rotation of the apical vertebra went from 18° ± 11.5° preoperatively to 9.4° ± 7.2° postoperatively (p < 0.001) with a mean derotation of 47.7%. Thoracic kyphosis went from 32.1° ± 18° preoperatively to 37.3° ± 13.1° postoperatively (p < 0.05). No intraoperative complications due to sublaminar bands were recorded. CONCLUSIONS: Hybrid construct with sublaminar band have been showed to be safe and effective in deformity correction and in maintaining or restoring thoracic kyphosis. This study showed that with sublaminar bands applied at the curve apex a substantial derotation of the apical vertebrae can be achieved.

PURPOSE: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a degenerative disorder causing the forward bending of the trunk and pelvic retroversion with the consequent loss of lumbar lordosis; surgical treatment is intended to enlarge the canal and foramina and decompress the nerve roots. The purpose of our study is to determine whether and to what extent facet-sparing laminectomy affects the spino-pelvic balance. METHODS: The spino-pelvic balance of 26 patients was analysed before and after surgery through the EOS X-ray Imaging System. The following parameters were considered: thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT) and sacral slope (SS). Clinical data were expressed in numeric values according to the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) scoring system. RESULTS: Significant SS decreases and PT increases were noticed after surgery, without modification in LL, axial vertebral rotation (AVR) and the general alignment. Pain and disability had a significant improvement, as represented by a decrease in scores on the VAS and ODI scales and an increase in scores on the mJOA functional scale. CONCLUSION: The most important parameter seems to be a congruence between pelvic and spinal parameters, which achieves an economic posture with the physiologic position of the axis of gravity. According to the literature, a standard sagittal balance (SB) has not been defined.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic state is maintained by harmonizing the spine, pelvis and lower extremities. In the past few decades, several studies have demonstrated the associations between spinal imbalance and generalized osteoarthritis. The compensatory mechanisms of pelvis translation and knee flexion, however, have not been fully assessed. METHODS: A total of 213 volunteers, over 40 years of age, were recruited. Radiological measurements were performed by EOS imaging system. Pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI), lumbar lordosis (LL), sagittal vertical axis (SVA), global tilt (GT), hip-knee-angle (HKA), knee flexion angle (KFA), lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), and medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) were measured. On the basis of SRS-Schwab, the subjects were classified into decompensated group (PI-LL > 20°), compensated group(10° ≤ PI-LL ≤ 20°), and normal group (PI-LL < 10°). Differences in radiographic parameters among groups were evaluated. Data of Knee Society Score (KSS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score were collected via questionnaires. RESULTS: Decompensated group showed larger pelvic parameters (PT) and low extremity parameters (LDFA, MPTA, HKA and KFA) than normal group (P < 0.05). Pelvic parameter was larger in the compensated group (median = 31°) compared to the normal group (median = 17°) (P < 0.05). There was no difference in low extremity parameters between the compensated and normal groups. At the sagittal plane, the radiological parameters of spine were greater in subjects with patellofemoral joint pain (PFP) than without PFP (P = 0.058). Higher PI-LL values were observed in women (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A correlation between sagittal spinal imbalance and knee joint angles was recognized. The progression of knee and low back pain was associated with the severity of sagittal spinal imbalance. Pelvic retroversion was considered to be the probable compensatory mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Linoleate-containing acylglucosylceramide (GLC-CER[EOx], where x = sphingosine [S], dihydrosphingosine [dS], phytosphingosine (P), or 6-hydroxysphingosine [H]) in the viable epidermis serve as the precursors to the linoleate-containing acylceramides (CER[EOx]) in the stratum corneum (SC) and the corneocyte lipid envelope (CLE), both of which are essential for the barrier function of the skin. SUMMARY: CLE formation and envelope maturation take place across the SC. Hypoxic conditions in the epidermis and anaerobic glycolysis with the production of lactic acid are important in proper SC barrier formation. KEY MESSAGE: CLE formation takes place across the SC. Its formation from linoleate-containing GLC-CER[EOx] requires lipoxygenase action, but anaerobic conditions leading to lactate production and hypoxia-inducible factors are essential for proper barrier formation. A number of unanswered questions are raised regarding formation of the CLE and the epidermal permeability barrier.

PURPOSE: To investigate the pathogenesis of the hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway activated by inflammation in the development of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). METHODS: The 82 people including CRSwNP patients (case group) and nasal septal deviation patients (control group) were recruited. The samples in the case group were collected and classified into two groups: mucosal tissue of nasal polyps (NP group) and mucosal tissue adjacent to nasal polyps (NM group), the samples were collected from the control group as CM group. Clinical characteristics were assessed. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining were performed to detect eosinophils (EOS), the expression of the key genes of the pathway and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers in the samples. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the nasal obstruction visual analog scale (VAS) score, rhinorrhea VAS score, percentage of blood EOS, blood EOS absolute counts and tissue EOS counts in the case group compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The EOS level and expression levels of PTCH1, SMO, Gli1, Gli2, Ki67 and vimentin were higher in NP group than in the other two groups (P < 0.05). E-cadherin expression was decreased in NP group (P < 0.05). A positive correlation between PTCH1 expression and CRSwNP Lund-Mackay score in NP group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that the activation of Hh signaling pathway might promote cell proliferation and EMT occurrence, ultimately leading to the development of CRSwNP, which might provide a new target for treatment.

PURPOSE: Changes in coronal and sagittal alignment of the knee joint after HTO have been reported in several previous studies. However, only few of them investigated the changes only on coronal alignment of the ankle joint. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in both coronal and sagittal alignment of the ankle joint after HTO. METHODS: 46 patients (49 cases) who underwent HTO were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative and postoperative lower extremity scanogram and EOS imaging system were investigated. The hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle, medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), and knee tibia plafond angle (KTPA) were measured by scanogram to evaluate coronal alignment of the knee. Tibial anterior surface angle (TAS), talar tilt (TT), tibial plafond inclination (TPI), and ankle joint axis point on the weight-bearing-line (AAWBL) ratio were measured by scanogram to investigate coronal alignment of the ankle. Knee lateral ankle surface angle (KLAS) and tibial lateral surface angle (TLS) were measured by EOS to evaluate sagittal alignment of the ankle. RESULTS: Varus alignment of the knee was corrected by significant change of the HKA angle (5.8 ± 3.1° vs. - 2.1 ± 2.8°, p < 0.001), MPTA (85.7 ± 2.9° vs. 91.7 ± 3.3°, p < 0.001), and KTPA (5.0 ± 3.5° vs. - 2.1 ± 4.2°, p < 0.001) after HTO. Regarding the ankle coronal alignment, there was significant change in TPI (3.9 ± 3.4° vs. - 0.9 ± 3.8°, p < 0.001) and AAWBL ratio (45.5 ± 14.7% vs. 61.6 ± 13.3%, p < 0.001). In sagittal alignment of the ankle, KLAS (4.5 ± 3.1° vs. 7.7 ± 3.7°, p < 0.001) significantly increased. Among the variables, the amount of correction in AAWBL ratio (R = 0.608, p < 0.01) showed strongest relationship with tibial correction angle. CONCLUSION: Based on the present study, coronal and sagittal alignment of ankle joint was significantly affected by HTO. After HTO, AAWBL ratio increased due to lateralization of the ankle joint axis, and KLAS increased due to increased posterior tibial slope. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

PURPOSE: Although spinal pathology or fusion can change patients' posture and pelvic orientation, their correlation with perception of limb length discrepancy (LLD) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) is not well understood. We hypothesised that LLD perception after THA would not correlate with a history of spinal pathology, fusion or sagittal lumbar spine stiffness among patients who underwent THA. METHODS: Four hundred consecutive patients who underwent THA and had a complete set of anteroposterior and lateral EOS® imaging in standing and sitting positions were included in this retrospective case-control study. All patients underwent THA between 2011 and 2020. Sagittal lumbar spine stiffness was measured by changes in lumbar lordosis and sacral slope from the standing to the sitting position (lumbar spine stiffness: standing sacral slope-sitting sacral slope < 10°). Anatomical and functional lower extremity length, change in the centre of hip rotation, coronal and sagittal knee alignment, and hindfoot height were measured. Multiple logistic regression was used to investigate the correlation between patient perceptions of LLD, and the variables found to be significant in the univariate analysis. RESULTS: There was a substantial difference between the patients with and without LLD perceptions regarding axial pelvic rotation (p = 0.001), knee flexum-recurvatum (p = 0.007) and hindfoot height (p = 0.004). There was no significant difference between patients with and without LLD perceptions regarding differences in femoral length (p = 0.06), history of spine pathology or fusion (p = 0.128) and lumbar spine stiffness (p = 0.955). CONCLUSIONS: Our study found no significant correlation between perceptions of LLD after THA and spinal fusion or lumbar spine stiffness. Changes in the position of the centre of hip rotation can affect the functional leg length. Surgeons should consult patients regarding other factors, such as knee alignment or hind-/midfoot pathologies, as well as compensatory mechanisms, such as axial pelvic rotation, that could affect perceptions of LLD.

Vapor pressures and other thermodynamic properties of liquids, such as density and enthalpy of mixtures, are the key parameters in chemical engineering for designing new process units, and are also essential for understanding the physical chemistry, macroscopic and molecular behavior of fluid systems. In this work, vapor pressures between 278.15 and 323.15 K, densities and enthalpies of mixtures between 288.15 and 318.15 K for the binary mixture (2-propanol + 1,8-cineole) have been measured. From the vapor pressure data, activity coefficients and excess Gibbs energies were calculated via the Barker's method and the Wilson equation. Excess molar volumes and excess molar enthalpies were also obtained from the density and calorimetric measurements. Thermodynamic consistency test between excess molar Gibbs energies and excess molar enthalpies has been carried out using the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation. Robinson-Mathias, and Peng-Robinson-Stryjek-Vera together with volume translation of Peneloux equations of state (EoS) are considered, as well as the statistical associating fluid theory that offers a molecular vision quite suitable for systems having highly non-spherical or associated molecules. Of these three models, the first two fit the experimental vapor pressure results quite adequately; in contrast, only the last one approaches the volumetric behavior of the system. A brief comparison of the thermodynamic excess molar functions for binary mixtures of short-chain alcohol + 1,8-cineole (cyclic ether), or +di-n-propylether (lineal ether) is also included.

The current research was conducted to extract the bioactive compounds from citrus waste and assess their role in the development of functional foods to treat different disorders. The scientific name of citrus is Citrus L. and it belongs to the Rutaceae family. It is one of the most important fruit crops that is grown throughout the world. During processing, a large amount of waste is produced from citrus fruits in the form of peel, seeds, and pomace. Every year, the citrus processing industry creates a large amount of waste. The citrus waste is composed of highly bioactive substances and phytochemicals, including essential oils (EOs), ascorbic acid, sugars, carotenoids, flavonoids, dietary fiber, polyphenols, and a range of trace elements. These valuable compounds are used to develop functional foods, including baked products, beverages, meat products, and dairy products. Moreover, these functional foods play an important role in treating various disorders, including anti-aging, anti-mutagenic, antidiabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-allergenic, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and cardiovascular-protective activity. EOs are complex and contain several naturally occurring bioactive compounds that are frequently used as the best substitutes in the food industry. Citrus essential oils have many uses in the packaging and food safety industries. They can also be used as an alternative preservative to extend the shelf lives of different food products.

Essential oils (Eos) have demonstrated antiviral activity, but their toxicity can hinder their use as therapeutic agents. Recently, some essential oil components have been used within safe levels of acceptable daily intake limits without causing toxicity. The "ImmunoDefender," a novel antiviral compound made from a well-known mixture of essential oils, is considered highly effective in treating SARS-CoV-2 infections. The components and doses were chosen based on existing information about their structure and toxicity. Blocking the main protease (Mpro) of SARS-CoV-2 with high affinity and capacity is critical for inhibiting the virus's pathogenesis and transmission. In silico studies were conducted to examine the molecular interactions between the main essential oil components in "ImmunoDefender" and SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. The screening results showed that six key components of ImmunoDefender formed stable complexes with Mpro via its active catalytic site with binding energies ranging from -8.75 to -10.30 kcal/mol, respectively for Cinnamtannin B1, Cinnamtannin B2, Pavetannin C1, Syzyginin B, Procyanidin C1, and Tenuifolin. Furthermore, three essential oil bioactive inhibitors, Cinnamtannin B1, Cinnamtannin B2, and Pavetannin C, had significant ability to bind to the allosteric site of the main protease with binding energies of -11.12, -10.74, and -10.79 kcal/mol; these results suggest that these essential oil bioactive compounds may play a role in preventing the attachment of the translated polyprotein to Mpro, inhibiting the virus's pathogenesis and transmission. These components also had drug-like characteristics similar to approved and effective drugs, suggesting that further pre-clinical and clinical studies are needed to confirm the generated in silico outcomes.

In the present investigation, the anti-biofilm potential of two essential oils (EOs), Melaleuca alternifolia Chell (Tea-Tree) (TTO) and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (EEO) was characterized and tested "in vitro" against both mature biofilms and biofilms in the process of formation, produced by strains belonging to three main categories of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB): Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and broad-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL). The study was carried out in 96-well microtiter-plates using EOs alone, in association with each other and in combination with antibiotics against both single and multi-species biofilm. The study demonstrated the ability of TTO and EEO to counteract the ARB strains in sessile form, with promising results in particular against the biofilm in formation. Mature biofilm by ESBL E. coli was the most sensitive in the results from the quantification study of viable cells performed in multi-species biofilms. Lastly, in all tests, carried out using TTO/EEO associations and EOs/antibiotic combinations, the synergistic effect which emerged from the FIC-index has been confirmed, and both the reduction of biofilm in formation, and the removal of mature structure was obtained at very low concentrations, with values from 4 to >512-fold lower than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the single compounds.
