RESUMO

The unreasonable use of antibiotics and the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) induced by antibiotics have led to a large number of ARGs entered the water environment, which seriously threatened human health and environmental safety. The estuarine aquatic environment connects with inland rivers and sea and is frequently influenced by human activities. This study aims to reveal the occurrences and abundances of ARGs and bacterial community composition by high-throughput quantitative PCR including 296 primers and high-throughput sequencing in the tide rising and ebbing of surface water in the Yongjiang Estuary, China. The results showed that there were a large number of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) detected in the rising tide and ebb tide water bodies. The numbers of detected ARGs in each sample at rising and ebb tide ranged from 16 to 77 and 61 to 88, respectively, and the absolute abundance ranges were 1.69 × 104-1.69 × 109 copies/L and 3.18 × 103-2.57 × 109 copies/L, respectively. Obvious tidal distribution characteristics of ARGs were showed. Most of ARGs conferred resistance to multidrug, aminoglycosides and sulfanilamides. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the dominantly bacterial phylum in the Yongjiang Estuary. Network analysis results indicated that multi-genera were identified as possible ARGs hosts, and they carried more than two types of ARGs genes. Partial least squares path modeling further revealed that MGEs and bacterial community composition were the most important driving factors. The results of the study can provide the corresponding scientific basis for the diffusion and control of ARGs in estuaries.

The organic pollutants disposed at the Sardas landfill in Sabiñánigo (Huesca, northeastern Spain) by the INQUINOSA lindane factory have reached the Gállego alluvial aquifer and could affect the Sabiñánigo reservoir. The daily oscillations of the reservoir water level produce a tidal effect on the piezometric heads of the aquifer. These oscillations are transmitted in a damped way with a time lag, thus attesting that the silting sediments of the reservoir and the natural silts of the Gállego alluvial are interposed between the reservoir water and the layer of sands and gravels. A 2D finite element groundwater flow and total dissolved hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) transport model through the Gállego alluvial aquifer is presented here. The flow model was constructed to: (1) Quantify the tidal effect, produced by the daily fluctuations of the reservoir water level on the aquifer; (2) Estimate the hydrodynamic parameters of the layer of sands and gravels; and 3) Estimate the vertical hydraulic conductivity of the silting sediments and silts; and (4) Quantify aquifer/reservoir interactions. The flow model reproduces the dynamics of the tidal effect and attests that groundwater velocity and flow direction changes daily in response to the oscillations of the reservoir level. Model results reproduce the measured well hydrographs and the Darcy velocity derived from tracer tests and confirm the validity of the conceptual model. The transport model of total dissolved HCH simulates the time evolution of the contaminant plume. The computed concentrations of total dissolved HCH and the contaminant mass outflux are very sensitive to changes in the source terms and the distribution coefficient, Kd of HCH. The best fit to the measured HCH plumes in September 2010 and December 2020 is obtained with a Kd ranging from 1 to 3 L/kg. The computed flux of dissolved HCH leaving the Sardas site in 2020 towards the Sabiñánigo reservoir ranges from 0.6 kg/year for Kd = 3 L/kg to 3.1 kg/year for Kd = 1 L/kg. The findings of this study will be most useful for planning and designing remedial and containment actions at the Sardas site and other similar lindane-affected sites.

Essential habitats support specific functions for species, such as reproduction, feeding or refuge. For highly mobile aquatic species, identifying essential habitats within the wider distribution range is central to understanding species ecology, and underpinning effective management plans. This study examined the movement and space use patterns of sevengill sharks (Notorynchus cepedianus) in Caleta Valdés (CV), a unique coastal habitat in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Seasonal residency patterns of sharks were evident, with higher detectability in late spring and early summer and lower during autumn and winter. The overlap between the residency patterns of sharks and their prey, elephant seals, suggests that CV functions as a seasonal feeding aggregation site for N. cepedianus. The study also found sexual differences in movement behaviour, with males performing abrupt departures from CV and showing increased roaming with the presence of more sharks, and maximum detection probability at high tide. These movements could be related to different feeding strategies between sexes or mate-searching behaviour, suggesting that CV may also be essential for reproduction. Overall, this study highlights the importance of coastal sites as essential habitats for N. cepedianus and deepens our understanding of the ecological role of this apex predator in marine ecosystems.

In this study, the 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing technique was used to explore the microbial diversity and differences in the water environment of the Pearl River Estuary in Nansha District with various land use types such as the aquaculture area, industrial area, tourist area, agricultural plantation, and residential area. At the same time, the quantity, type, abundance, and distribution of two types of emerging environmental pollutants, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics (MPs), are explored in the water samples from different functional areas. The results show that the dominant phyla in the five functional regions are Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes, and the dominant genera are Hydrogenophaga, Synechococcus, Limnohabitans and Polynucleobacter. A total of 248 ARG subtypes were detected in the five regions, belonging to nine classes of ARGs (Aminoglycoside, Beta_Lactamase, Chlor, MGEs, MLSB, Multidrug, Sul, Tet, Van). Blue and white were the dominant MP colors in the five regions; 0.5-2 mm was the dominant MP size, and cellulose, rayon, and polyester comprised the highest proportion of the plastic polymers. This study provides the basis for understanding the environmental microbial distribution in estuaries and the prevention of environmental health risks from ARGs and microplastics.

The metal concentration in surface water of a river could be affected by season, position, and oceanic process such as tide. The current study aimed to (1) examine the heavy metal(loid) concentration in surface water from the Saigon River as affected by the combination of season, tide, and position and (2) apportion and quantify pollution sources. Ninety-six surface water samples were collected from 13 sites on the River in four campaigns (rainy season + ebb tide, rainy season + flood tide, dry season + ebb tide, and dry season + flood tide). Eight heavy metal(loid)s (Al, B, Bi, Fe, Mn, Pb, Sr, and Zn) were measured and subjected to multivariate analyses. Three-way ANOVA showed that in the rainy season, the total concentration of the metal(loid)s (TCM) in two tides was not clearly different from each other while in the dry season the TCM was significantly higher during the ebb tide than during the flood tide. Principal component analysis/factor analysis and Pearson correlation matrix showed that the TCM could be derived from three main sources, grouped into anthropogenic activities such as industrial, agricultural, and domestic wastes from inside Ho Chi Minh city, and natural origins from lowland area and acid sulfate soil. Three pollution sources explained 70% and 68% of the total variance of TCM in the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. In brief, the metal(loid) concentration was significantly affected by the season and tide and the pollution sources could be derived from inside Ho Chi Minh City and from lowland areas beyond the river estuary.

RESUMO O presente trabalho aplicou o Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) para simular e avaliar a resposta hidrológica do sistema de macrodrenagem de um rio costeiro, cuja bacia situa-se em área de transição urbano-rural e apresenta influência marítima em seu exutório. Assim, como condição de contorno de jusante, reconstruiu-se a curva de maré existente no exutório da bacia por meio do método harmônico. Ademais, realizou-se a delimitação dos trechos de escoamento e a discretização das sub-bacias automaticamente e desenvolveu-se um mapa de uso e ocupação do solo para obtenção dos parâmetros físicos e espaciais dos elementos da drenagem, etapas estas auxiliadas por ferramentas de Sistemas de Informações Geográficas (SIG). Procedeu-se à simulação das vazões no sistema para o período de um mês sob condição de precipitação moderada. A validação do modelo resultou em um coeficiente de Nash-Sutcliffe de 0,57. Os resultados mostraram que o SWMM simulou as vazões nos trechos de drenagem das sub-bacias rurais com desvio médio de 8,6% das vazões medidas em campo. Para os trechos sob influência marinha, o SWMM conseguiu reproduzir o efeito da maré nos trechos, apresentando uma oscilação completa. Ademais, obteve-se a descarga fluvial média da bacia ao estuário de 2,35 m3.s-1 e a vazão média mensal afluente ao maior reservatório da bacia de 0,33 m3.s-1, resultados estes em consonância com trabalhos anteriores realizados na bacia em estudo. Em síntese, os resultados obtidos e o modelo proposto têm potencial para auxiliar na gestão integrada de águas rurais, urbanas e costeiras.


ABSTRACT The present work applied the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) to simulate and evaluate the hydrological response of a coastal river macrodrainage system whose basin is located in an urban-rural transition area and has a tidal influence in its outflow. Thus, as a downstream contour condition, the existing tidal curve in the basin's outlet was reconstructed using the harmonic method. In addition, drainage stretches and sub-basins were automatically delimited, and a land use and occupation maps were developed to obtain the physical and spatial parameters of the drainage elements, these steps being aided by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools. The flow was simulated in the system for a period of one month under a moderate precipitation condition. The validation of the model resulted in a Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of 0.57. The results showed that the SWMM simulated the flows in the drainage stretches of the rural sub-basins with an average deviation of 8.6% of the flows measured in the field. For stretches under tidal influence, SWMM was able to reproduce the effect of the tide in the stretches with a complete oscillation. In addition, the river discharge from the basin to the estuary was 2.35 m3.s-1, on average, and the average monthly flow affluent to the largest reservoir in the basin was 0.33 m3.s-1, consistently with previous work carried out in the study basin. In summary, the results obtained and the proposed model have the potential to assist in the integrated management of rural, urban, and coastal waters.
