RESUMO

Binary classification is one of the central problems in machine-learning research and, as such, investigations of its general statistical properties are of interest. We studied the ranking statistics of items in binary classification problems and observed that there is a formal and surprising relationship between the probability of a sample belonging to one of the two classes and the Fermi-Dirac distribution determining the probability that a fermion occupies a given single-particle quantum state in a physical system of noninteracting fermions. Using this equivalence, it is possible to compute a calibrated probabilistic output for binary classifiers. We show that the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) in a classification problem is related to the temperature of an equivalent physical system. In a similar manner, the optimal decision threshold between the two classes is associated with the chemical potential of an equivalent physical system. Using our framework, we also derive a closed-form expression to calculate the variance for the AUC of a classifier. Finally, we introduce FiDEL (Fermi-Dirac-based ensemble learning), an ensemble learning algorithm that uses the calibrated nature of the classifier's output probability to combine possibly very different classifiers.

Termites are major decomposers in terrestrial ecosystems and the second most diverse lineage of social insects. The Kalotermitidae form the second-largest termite family and are distributed across tropical and subtropical ecosystems, where they typically live in small colonies confined to single wood items inhabited by individuals with no foraging abilities. How the Kalotermitidae have acquired their global distribution patterns remains unresolved. Similarly, it is unclear whether foraging is ancestral to Kalotermitidae or was secondarily acquired in a few species. These questions can be addressed in a phylogenetic framework. We inferred time-calibrated phylogenetic trees of Kalotermitidae using mitochondrial genomes of ∼120 species, about 27% of kalotermitid diversity, including representatives of 21 of the 23 kalotermitid genera. Our mitochondrial genome phylogenetic trees were corroborated by phylogenies inferred from nuclear ultraconserved elements derived from a subset of 28 species. We found that extant kalotermitids shared a common ancestor 84 Ma (75-93 Ma 95% highest posterior density), indicating that a few disjunctions among early-diverging kalotermitid lineages may predate Gondwana breakup. However, most of the ∼40 disjunctions among biogeographic realms were dated at <50 Ma, indicating that transoceanic dispersals, and more recently human-mediated dispersals, have been the major drivers of the global distribution of Kalotermitidae. Our phylogeny also revealed that the capacity to forage is often found in early-diverging kalotermitid lineages, implying the ancestors of Kalotermitidae were able to forage among multiple wood pieces. Our phylogenetic estimates provide a platform for critical taxonomic revision and future comparative analyses of Kalotermitidae.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a serious mental disorder involving widespread abnormal interactions between brain regions, and it is believed to be associated with imbalanced functions in the brain. However, how this brain imbalance underlies distinct BD symptoms remains poorly understood. Here, we used a nested-spectral partition (NSP) method to study the segregation, integration, and balance in resting-state brain functional networks in BD patients and healthy controls (HCs). We first confirmed that there was a high deviation in the brain functional network toward more segregation in BD patients than in HCs and that the limbic system had the largest alteration. Second, we demonstrated a network balance of segregation and integration that corresponded to lower anxiety in BD patients but was not related to other symptoms. Subsequently, based on a machine-learning approach, we identified different system-level mechanisms underlying distinct BD symptoms and found that the features related to the brain network balance could predict BD symptoms better than graph theory analyses. Finally, we studied attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in BD patients and identified specific patterns that distinctly predicted ADHD and BD scores, as well as their shared common domains. Our findings supported an association of brain imbalance with anxiety symptom in BD patients and provided a potential network signature for diagnosing BD. These results contribute to further understanding the neuropathology of BD and to screening ADHD in BD patients.

Although increasing efforts have been devoted to the development of non-invasive wearable or stretchable electrochemical sweat sensors for monitoring physiological and metabolic information, most of them still suffer from poor stability and specificity over time and fluctuating temperatures. This study reports the design and fabrication of a long-term stable and highly sensitive flexible electrochemical sensor based on nanocomposite-modified porous graphene by simple and facile laser treatment for detecting biomarkers such as glucose in sweat. The laser-reduced and patterned stable conductive nanocomposite on the porous graphene electrode provides the resulting glucose sensor with an excellent sensitivity of 1317.69 µAmM-1cm-2 with an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.079 µM. The sensor can also detect pH and exhibit extraordinary stability to maintain more than 91% sensitivity over 21 days in ambient conditions. Taken together with a temperature sensor based on the same material system, the dual glucose and pH sensor integrated with a flexible microfluidic sweat sampling network further results in accurate continuous on-body glucose detection calibrated by the simultaneously measured pH and temperature. The low-cost, highly sensitive, and long-term stable platform could facilitate and pave the way for the early identification and continuous monitoring of different biomarkers for non-invasive disease diagnosis and treatment evaluation.

Estimates of the age of angiosperms from molecular phylogenies vary considerably. As in all estimates of evolutionary timescales from phylogenies, generating these estimates requires assumptions about the rate that molecular sequences are evolving (using clock models) and the time duration of the branches in a phylogeny (using fossil calibrations and branching processes). Often, it is difficult to demonstrate that these assumptions reflect current knowledge of molecular evolution or the fossil record. In this study we re-estimate the age of angiosperms using a minimal set of assumptions, therefore avoiding many of the assumptions inherent to other methods. The age estimates we generate are similar for each of the four datasets analysed, ranging from 130 to 400 Ma, but are far less precise than in previous studies. We demonstrate that this reduction in precision results from making less stringent assumptions about both rate and time, and that the analysed molecular dataset has very little effect on age estimates.

Insular habitats have played an important role in developing evolutionary theory, including natural selection and island biogeography. Caves are insular habitats that place extreme selective pressures on organisms due to the absence of light and food scarcity. Therefore, cave organisms present an excellent opportunity for studying colonization and speciation in response to the unique abiotic conditions that require extreme adaptations. One vertebrate family, the North American catfishes (Ictaluridae), includes four troglobitic species that inhabit the karst region bordering the western Gulf of Mexico. The phylogenetic relationships of these species have been contentious, and conflicting hypotheses have been proposed to explain their origins. The purpose of our study was to construct a time-calibrated phylogeny of Ictaluridae using first-occurrence fossil data and the largest molecular dataset on the group to date. We test the hypothesis that troglobitic ictalurids have evolved in parallel, thus resulting from repeated cave colonization events. We found that Prietella lundbergi is sister to surface-dwelling Ictalurus and that Prietella phreatophila + Trogloglanis pattersoni are sister to surface-dwelling Ameiurus, suggesting that ictalurids colonized subterranean habitats at least twice in evolutionary history. The sister relationship between Prietella phreatophila and Trogloglanis pattersoni may indicate that these two species diverged from a common ancestor following a subterranean dispersal event between Texas and Coahuila aquifers. We recovered Prietella as a polyphyletic genus and recommend P. lundbergi be removed from this genus. With respect to Ameiurus, we found evidence for a potentially undescribed species sister to A. platycephalus, which warrants further investigation of Atlantic and Gulf slope Ameiurus species. In Ictalurus, we identified shallow divergence between I. dugesii and I. ochoterenai, I. australis and I. mexicanus, and I. furcatus and I. meridionalis, indicating a need to reexamine the validity of each species. Lastly, we propose minor revisions to the intrageneric classification of Noturus including the restriction of subgenus Schilbeodes to N. gyrinus (type species), N. lachneri, N. leptacanthus, and N. nocturnus.

Aridity conditions and expansion of arid biomes in South America are closely linked to the onset of Andean orogeny since at least 30 Mya. Among arid-associated taxa, spiders belonging to the genus Petrichus are found along the Andes mountains and across the diagonal of open formations of the Chaco and Cerrado domains. In this contribution, we asked whether Petrichus originated prior to the central Andean uplift and what historical processes have promoted their diversification. We time-calibrated the phylogenetic tree of Philodromidae and estimated the divergence times of Petrichus. Considering phylogenetic uncertainty, we assessed biogeographical hypotheses of the historical events associated with the diversification of these spiders in South America. Petrichus originated along the Pacific coastal deserts in the Central Andes during the Early Miocene. The species likely dispersed from the western to the eastern side of the Andes coincidently with the central Andean uplift. The diversification of these spiders is coeval with the expansion of open grassland formations during the Late Miocene and Early Pliocene. Multiple dispersal events occurred from the Monte desert to southern South America and eastward to Chaco between âˆ¼ 8 and 2.5 Mya. The Andes might have played a role as a corridor favoring geographical range expansions and colonization of new environments. In addition, we also suggest that Philodromidae might have an Oligocene origin or earlier. Future analyses based on further evidence and larger taxon sampling should be carried out to corroborate our findings.

BACKGROUND: To facilitate background matching in heterogenous environments, some animals rapidly change body colouration. Marine predatory fishes might use this ability to hide from predators and prey. Here, we focus on scorpionfishes (Scorpaenidae), well-camouflaged, bottom-dwelling sit-and-wait predators. We tested whether Scorpaena maderensis and Scorpaena porcus adjust body luminance and hue in response to three artificial backgrounds and thereby achieve background matching. Both scorpionfish species are also red fluorescent, which could contribute to background matching at depth. Therefore, we tested whether red fluorescence is also regulated in response to different backgrounds. The darkest and the lightest backgrounds were grey, while the third background was orange of intermediate luminance. Scorpionfish were placed on all three backgrounds in a randomised repeated measures design. We documented changes in scorpionfish luminance and hue with image analysis and calculated contrast to the backgrounds. Changes were quantified from the visual perspective of two potential prey fishes, the triplefin Tripterygion delaisi and the goby Pomatoschistus flavescens. Additionally, we measured changes in the area of scorpionfish red fluorescence. Because scorpionfish changed quicker than initially expected, we measured luminance change at a higher temporal resolution in a second experiment. RESULTS: Both scorpionfish species rapidly adjusted luminance and hue in response to a change of background. From prey visual perspective, scorpionfishes' body achromatic and chromatic contrasts against the background were high, indicating imperfect background matching. Chromatic contrasts differed considerably between the two observer species, highlighting the importance of choosing natural observers with care when studying camouflage. Scorpionfish displayed larger areas of red fluorescence with increasing luminance of the background. With the second experiment, we showed that about 50% of the total luminance change observed after one minute is achieved very rapidly, in five to ten seconds. CONCLUSION: Both scorpionfish species change body luminance and hue in response to different backgrounds within seconds. While the achieved background matching was suboptimal for the artificial backgrounds, we propose that the observed changes were intended to reduce detectability, and are an essential strategy to camouflage in the natural environment.

Clinical information collected in electronic health records (EHRs) is becoming an essential source to emulate randomized experiments. Since patients do not interact with the healthcare system at random, the longitudinal information in large observational databases must account for irregular visits. Moreover, we need to also account for subject-specific unmeasured confounders which may act as a common cause for treatment assignment mechanism (e.g. glucose-lowering medications) while also influencing the outcome (e.g. Hemoglobin A1c). We used the calibration of longitudinal weights to improve the finite sample properties and to account for subject-specific unmeasured confounders. A Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of calibrated inverse probability estimators using time-dependent treatment assignment and irregular visits with subject-specific unmeasured confounders. The simulation study showed that the longitudinal weights with calibrated restrictions improved the finite sample bias when compared to the stabilized weights. The application of the calibrated weights is demonstrated using the exposure of glucose lowering medications and the longitudinal outcome of Hemoglobin A1c. Our results support the effectiveness of glucose lowering medications in reducing Hemoglobin A1c among type II diabetes patients with elevated glycemic index ([Formula: see text]) using stabilized and calibrated weights.

Neural-vascular coupling (NVC) is the process by which oxygen and nutrients are delivered to metabolically active neurons by blood vessels. Murine models of NVC disruption have revealed its critical role in healthy neural function. We hypothesized that, in humans, aging exerts detrimental effects upon the integrity of the neural-glial-vascular system that underlies NVC. To test this hypothesis, calibrated functional magnetic resonance imaging (cfMRI) was used to characterize age-related changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygen metabolism during visual cortex stimulation. Thirty-three younger and 27 older participants underwent cfMRI scanning during both an attention-controlled visual stimulation task and a hypercapnia paradigm used to calibrate the blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal. Measurement of stimulus-evoked blood flow and oxygen metabolism permitted calculation of the NVC ratio to assess the integrity of neural-vascular communication. Consistent with our hypothesis, we observed monotonic NVC ratio increases with increasing visual stimulation frequency in younger adults but not in older adults. Age-related changes in stimulus-evoked cerebrovascular and neurometabolic signal could not fully explain this disruption; increases in stimulus-evoked neurometabolic activity elicited corresponding increases in stimulus-evoked CBF in younger but not in older adults. These results implicate age-related, demand-dependent failures of the neural-glial-vascular structures that comprise the NVC system.

AIMS: Increased collagen content of the myocardium modifies tissue reflectivity and integrated backscatter (IBS) indexes are suggested as markers of myocardial fibrosis (MF). We sought to assess the correlation between calibrated (c) IBS and bidimensional (2D) strain derived IBS with left ventricular (LV) MF in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). METHODS AND RESULTS: We made a prospective observational cohort study including 157 patients with severe AS referred for surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR), with complete preoperative transthoracic echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) obtained from the anterior basal septum at the time of surgery. Two groups of 30 patients were specifically evaluated, with and without late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) at CMR. IBS was obtained at QRS peak from both parasternal long axis (PLAX) and apical-three-chamber (AP3C) views and measured in decibels (dB). Whole-cardiac cycle IBS at basal anterior septum was obtained from 2D longitudinal strain. Correlation analysis of reflectivity indexes was performed with global and segmental (anterior basal septum) values of native T1 and extracellular volume (ECV), and EMB collagen volume fraction (CVF) (Masson´s Trichrome). IBS values were compared in both group of patients (LGE + vs. LGE -). 60 patients (74 [36-74] years, 45% male) with high gradient (mean gradient: 63 ± 20mmHg), normal flow (45 ± 10mL/m2) AS and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (60 ± 9%) were included. Basal septum cIBS was - 17.45 (-31.2-10.95) and - 9.17 ± 9.45dB from PLAX and A3C views, respectively. No significant correlations were found between IBS and both non-invasive CMR tissue characterization and CVF: median MF of 9.7(2.1-79.9)%. Acoustic indexes were not significantly different according to the presence of pre-operative LGE. CONCLUSION: In this group of patients with classical severe AS, IBS reflectivity indexes are of no added value to discriminate the presence of MF.

Demographers have developed a number of methods for expanding abridged mortality data into a complete schedule; however, these can be usefully applied only under certain conditions, and the presence or absence of one or more additional sources of incompleteness can degrade their relative accuracy, lead to implausible profiles, or even cause the methods to fail. We develop a new method for expanding an abridged schedule based on calibrated splines; this method is accurate and robust in the presence of errors in mortality rates, missing values, and truncation. We compare its performance with the performance of existing methods for expanding abridged data and find that it is superior to current methods at producing accurate and plausible complete schedules over a broad range of data-quality conditions. The method when applied is a valuable addition to existing tools for estimating mortality, especially for small nations, countries with incomplete vital statistics, and subnational populations.

Impervious surfaces affect the ecosystem function of watersheds. Therefore, the impervious surface area percentage (ISA%) in watersheds has been regarded as an important indicator for assessing the health status of watersheds. However, accurate and frequent estimation of ISA% from satellite data remains a challenge, especially at large scales (national, regional, or global). In this study, we first developed a method to estimate ISA% by combining daytime and nighttime satellite data. We then used the developed method to generate an annual ISA% distribution map from 2003 to 2021 for Indonesia. Third, we used these ISA% distribution maps to assess the health status of Indonesian watersheds according to Schueler's criteria. Accuracy assessment results show that the developed method performed well from low ISA% (rural) to high ISA% (urban) values, with a root mean square difference value of 0.52 km2, a mean absolute percentage difference value of 16.2%, and a bias of -0.08 km2. In addition, since the developed method uses only satellite data as input, it can be easily implemented in other regions with some modifications according to differences in light use efficiency and economic development in each region. We also found that 88% of Indonesian watersheds remain without impact in 2021, indicating that the health status of Indonesian watersheds is not a serious problem. Nevertheless, Indonesia's total ISA increased significantly from 3687.4 km2 in 2003 to 10,505.5 km2 in 2021, and most of the increased ISA was in rural areas. These results indicate that negative trends in health status in Indonesian watersheds may emerge in the future without proper watershed management.

BACKGROUND: P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1/CD162) has been studied extensively for its role in mediating leukocyte rolling through interactions with its cognate receptor, P-selectin. Recently, PSGL-1 was identified as a novel HIV-1 host restriction factor, particularly when expressed at high levels in the HIV envelope. Importantly, while the potent antiviral activity of PSGL-1 has been clearly demonstrated in various complementary model systems, the breadth of PSGL-1 incorporation across genetically diverse viral isolates and clinical isolates has yet to be described. Additionally, the biological activity of virion-incorporated PSGL-1 has also yet to be shown. RESULTS: Herein we assessed the levels of PSGL-1 on viruses produced through transfection with various amounts of PSGL-1 plasmid DNA (0-250 ng), compared to levels of PSGL-1 on viruses produced through infection of T cell lines and primary PBMC. We found that very low levels of PSGL-1 plasmid DNA (< 2.5 ng/well) were necessary to generate virus models that could closely mirror the phenotype of viruses produced via infection of T cells and PBMC. Unique to this study, we show that PSGL-1 is incorporated in a broad range of HIV-1 and SIV isolates and that virions with incorporated PSGL-1 are detectable in plasma from viremic HIV-1-infected individuals, corroborating the relevance of PSGL-1 in natural infection. Additionally, we show that PSGL-1 on viruses can bind its cognate selectin receptors, P-, E-, and L-selectins. Finally, we show viruses with endogenous levels of PSGL-1 can be captured by P-selectin and transferred to HIV-permissive bystander cells, highlighting a novel role for PSGL-1 in HIV-1 infection. Notably, viruses which contained high levels of PSGL-1 were noninfectious in our hands, in line with previous findings reporting the potent antiviral activity of PSGL-1. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that levels of PSGL-1 incorporation into virions can vary widely among model systems tested, and that careful tailoring of plasmid levels is required to recapitulate physiological systems when using pseudovirus models. Taken together, our data suggest that PSGL-1 may play diverse roles in the physiology of HIV-1 infection, particularly due to the functionally active state of PSGL-1 on virion surfaces and the breadth of PSGL-1 incorporation among a wide range of viral isolates.

Phylogenetic comparative studies suggest that the direction of deviation from bilateral symmetry (sidedness) might evolve through genetic assimilation; however, the changes in sidedness inheritance remain largely unknown. We investigated the evolution of genital asymmetry in fish of the family Anablepidae, in which males' intromittent organ (the gonopodium, a modified anal fin) bends asymmetrically to the left or the right. In most species, males show a 1 : 1 ratio of left-to-right-sided gonopodia. However, we found that in three species left-sided males are significantly more abundant than right-sided ones. We mapped sidedness onto a new molecular phylogeny, finding that this left-sided bias likely evolved independently three times. Our breeding experiment in a species with an excess of left-sided males showed that sires produced more left-sided offspring independently of their own sidedness. We propose that sidedness might be inherited as a threshold trait, with different thresholds across species. This resolves the apparent paradox that, while there is evidence for the evolution of sidedness, commonly there is a lack of support for its heritability and no response to artificial selection. Focusing on the heritability of the left : right ratio of offspring, rather than on individual sidedness, is key for understanding how the direction of asymmetry becomes genetically assimilated.

RESUMO

Remote oceanic islands of the Pacific host elevated levels of actinopterygian (ray-finned fishes) endemism. Characterizing the evolutionary histories of these endemics has provided insight into the generation and maintenance of marine biodiversity in many regions. The subtropical islands of Lord Howe, Norfolk, and Rangitahua (Kermadec) in the Southwest Pacific are yet to be comprehensively studied. Here, we characterize the spatio-temporal diversification of marine fishes endemic to these Southwest Pacific islands by combining molecular phylogenies and the geographic distribution of species. We built Bayesian ultrametric trees based on open-access and newly generated sequences for five mitochondrial and ten nuclear loci, and using fossil data for time calibration. We present the most comprehensive phylogenies to date for marine ray-finned fish genera, comprising 34 species endemic to the islands, including the first phylogenetic placements for 11 endemics. Overall, our topologies confirm the species status of all endemics, including three undescribed taxa. Our phylogenies highlight the predominant affinity of these endemics with the Australian fish fauna (53%), followed by the East Pacific (15%), and individual cases where the closest sister taxon of our endemic is found in the Northwest Pacific and wider Indo-Pacific. Nonetheless, for a quarter of our focal endemics, their geographic affinity remains unresolved due to sampling gaps within their genera. Our divergence time estimates reveal that the majority of endemic lineages (67.6%) diverged after the emergence of Lord Howe (6.92 Ma), the oldest subtropical island in the Southwest Pacific, suggesting that these islands have promoted diversification. However, divergence ages of some endemics pre-date the emergence of the islands, suggesting they may have originated outside of these islands, or, in some cases, ages may be overestimated due to unsampled taxa. To fully understand the role of the Southwest Pacific subtropical islands as a 'cradle' for diversification, our study advocates for further regional surveys focused on tissue collection for DNA analysis.

Glucokinase has an important role in regulating glycolysis as a glucose sensor in liver and pancreatic ß cells. Glucokinase-maturity onset diabetes in young (GCK-MODY also known as MODY2) is caused by autosomal dominant gene mutation of the GCK gene; it is characterized by mild fasting hyperglycemia and small 2-h glucose increment during 75 g-oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) as well as near-normal postprandial glucose variabilities. A 10-year-old girl with family history of diabetes visited her physician after being found positive for urinary glucose by school medical checkup. She received a diagnosis of diabetes based on the laboratory data: 75 g-OGTT (mild fasting hyperglycemia and small 2-h glucose increment) and factory-calibrated glucose monitoring (mild elevation of average glucose level and near-normal glycemic variability), which raised suspicion of GCK-MODY. She was then referred to our institution for genetic examination, which revealed a GCK heterozygous mutation (NM_000162: exon10: c.1324G>T: p.E442X) in the proband as well as in her mother and maternal grandmother, who had been receiving anti-diabetes medications without knowing that they had GCK-MODY specifically. GCK-MODY cases show incidence of microvascular and macrovascular diseases similar to that of normal subjects, and their glucose levels are adequately controlled without anti-diabetes drug use. Thus, early and definitive diagnosis of MODY2 by genetic testing is important to avoid unnecessary medication.

Stiffened structure-induced gain-phase errors degrade the performance of the high-resolution two-dimensional multiple signal classification (2D-MUSIC) algorithm, which makes it impossible to ensure the high accuracy of impact localization results. To eliminate the localization bias caused by these errors, a calibrated 2D-MUSIC-based impact localization method is first introduced. Firstly, time-frequency characteristics of the non-stationary impact signals are evaluated by experiment to obtain a clear first wave packet or a wave packet that purely corresponds to a single mode through continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Then, the uniform linear array covariance matrix with gain-phase errors is calibrated to be constructed as a Toeplitz structural matrix. By reconstructing covariance matrix R, 2D-MUSIC-based impact localization is calibrated for stiffened curved composite structures. Experimental research on the stiffened curved composite panel is carried out, and these impact localization results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the calibrated 2D-MUSIC-based method.

The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is important for estimating the physical properties of a surface in remote sensing. In the laboratory, the BRDF can be estimated quickly and accurately using a goniometer, but it is very difficult to operate in the field. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether estimating the BRDF with reasonable accuracy using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a multispectral camera is possible in the field. Hemispherical reflectance was created from images taken using an UAV multispectral camera. The ground targets were four calibrated reference tarps (CRTs) of different reflectance, and the UAV was operated five times. Down-welling irradiance for reflectance calculation was measured in two ways: a sunlight sensor was mounted on a UAV, and a spectroradiometer with a remote cosine receptor (RCR) was installed on the ground. The BRDF was assessed through the anisotropy factor (ANIF) of the CRT reflectance derived from the collected data. As a result, the irradiance data for the reflectance calculation were more effective from the spectroradiometer with RCR on the ground than from the sunlight sensor mounted on an UAV. Furthermore, the high reflectance CRTs, ANIF, and BRDF had similar results. Therefore, when analyzing the BRDF, the effectiveness can be guaranteed when the reflectance of the target is over 21~46%, because a low reflectance tendency differs due to the adjacency effect. In addition, weather affects irradiance, so it is more effective to conduct fieldwork in clear weather.

Partial occupancy of commercial offices has become the norm in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Given this, occupant-centric control (OCC), which adapt building systems based on occupants' presence or preferences, offer an alternative to traditional control that assumes full occupancy. However, poor sequences of operation can degrade the benefits of OCC. This paper explores this interaction by examining energy data from two buildings - one with two control logic faults corrected and an occupancy-based ventilation OCC implemented in 2020, and one with traditional ventilation - from 2019 to 2020. Sequences that impacted implementation in the first building are discussed. Then, a calibrated energy model of the second building is developed to evaluate how occupancy-based ventilation alongside changes to the sequences of operation - namely supply air temperature (SAT) reset and economizer high limits - impacted energy use. The inclusion of OCC and improved sequences in the second building saved 30.6% and 9.6% of annual heating and cooling energy, respectively. Without an SAT reset, OCC saved 4.4% and 3.9% of heating and cooling, respectively, compared to 15.7% and 5.7% when an SAT was present. These results begin to characterize the relationship sequences of operation and OCC implementations have with one another in commercial offices.
