Damage-free transfer of large-area two-dimensional (2D) materials is indispensable to unleash their full potentials in a wide range of electronic, photonic, and biochemical applications. However, the all-surface nature of 2D materials renders many of them vulnerable to surrounding environments, especially etchants and water involved during wet transfer process. Up to now, a scalable and damage-free transfer method for sensitive 2D materials is still lacking. Here, we report a general damage-free transfer method for sensitive 2D materials. The as-transferred 2D materials exhibit well-preserved structural integrity and unaltered physical properties. We further develop a facile TEM sample preparation technique that allows direct recycling of materials on TEM grids with high fidelity. This recycling technique provides an unprecedented opportunity to precisely relate structural characterization with physical/chemical/electrical probing for the same samples. This method can be readily generalized to diverse nanomaterials for large-area damage-free transfer and enables in-depth investigation of structure-property relationship.

BACKGROUND: Environmental Social Governance (ESG) investment had entered a phase of rapid development in the past few decades as most nations had put forward "carbon neutral" initiatives. ESG would receive more attention from the industry and academia in a global environment full of uncertainties. Companies benefit from the sharing of ESG data by improving their brand image, which attracts funding, lowers financing costs, and increases valuation. PURPOSE: To explore how ESG drives corporate financial performance. Also, the research examines the interrelation of ESG presentation and corporate presentation. DESIGN: /methodology/approach: Over an interval of 10 years (2011-2020) using a sample of 3332 listed organizations worldwide. The theory of the research is on the basis of stakeholder and transmitting signal theory and multiple regression and categorized regression were applied with STATA 16.0 software. RESULTS: The study utilizes a large dataset of 24,076 valid observations, providing robust statistical power for the analysis. The study findings proved that ESG performance is positively interrelated with corporate performance (p < 0.01). According to the findings of the study, at 1% of the level related to significance (p < 0.01), the regression coefficient for ESG is considerably positive. Thus, the influence of ESG rating on corporate performance is significant for large-scale companies and insignificant for small-scale companies. The results demonstrate that the positive impact of ESG rating on corporate financial performance is more pronounced in the high risk case than in the low risk case (p < 0.01). The results highlight the importance of ESG performance in today's world. Overall, the study gives precious perception about the interrelation between ESG and corporate financial performance (CFP). POLICY IMPLICATIONS: The researchers believe that the results of this study are beneficial to companies and governments in the development of environmentally conscious industries since they demonstrate corporate success through ESG. More realistically, the ESG can boost corporate firm performance by enabling businesses to maintain sustainability, establish a solid reputation, win the trust of stakeholders, and contribute to solving national sustainable development issues. Additionally, the researchers believe that the results of this study can boost management effectiveness, which in turn can help firms succeed. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: In the context of environmentally sensitive industries, this study findings provide empirical insights to the association between the corporate firms success and ESG performance. In addition, the findings provide insights to the business organizations development and the significance of ESG integration in the business organizations.

Histone deacetylase 8 (HDAC8) is overexpressed in multiple cancers and lack of effective chemical probes which could detect and visualize HDAC8 in tumor cells and tissues remains unsolved. In this work, three novel turn-on HDAC8 fluorescent probes 17-19 derived from solvatochromic fluorophore 4-sulfamonyl-7-aminobenzoxadiazole (SBD) conjugating with a potent HDAC8 inhibitor PCI-34051 (IC50 = 10 nM) as the recognition group were fabricated. The probes exhibited much stronger fluorescence when they transfer from hydrophilic environment (Φ < 8%) to hydrophobic environment (Φ > 46%). Compared with PCI-34051 (KD = 9.16 × 10-6 M), probes 17 (KD = 5.37 × 10-6 M), 18 (KD = 3.57 × 10-6 M) and 19 (KD = 8.89 × 10-6 M) possessed slightly better affinity for HDAC8. Probe 19 was selected for cell imaging and it showed significantly enhanced fluorescence only after binding into the cavity of HDAC8 in SH-SY5Y and MDA-MB-231 tumor cells. Co-localization results demonstrated that HDAC8 is expressed in cytoplasm and nucleus. Furthermore, probe 19 was successfully utilized to distinguish the expression level of HDAC8 in SH-SY5Y tumor and normal tissue slices.

Most discriminant methods do not consider the problem of misjudgment related to the superposition of information from different discriminant indexes. Therefore, we used principal component and Fisher discriminant analysis to model, assess, and classify environmental and ecological quality, and the impacts of coal mining. The analysis uses the following input parameters as discrimination indexes: geomorphology, phreatic water depth, thickness of the phreatic water layer, bedrock thickness above the uppermost coal seam, and thickness of the uppermost coal seam. Twenty-three datasets from the Yushenfu coal mine area, Shaanxi Province, China, were used to train the model. The validity of the model was tested by the backward substitution method, and the misjudgment rate was zero. Seven datasets were then used as test samples in a support vector machine model. Our results show that it is feasible to predict the environmental and ecological impacts of coal mining with principal component analysis and Fisher discriminant analysis, which can effectively eliminate the interaction between the sample variables. This results in a more accurate assessment of mine environmental quality and represents a new method for predicting the impacts of coal mining in environmentally sensitive areas.

High-relaxivity protein-complexes of GdIII are being pursued as MRI contrast agents in hope that they can be used at much lower doses that would minimize toxic-side effects of GdIII release from traditional contrast agents. We construct here a new type of protein-based MRI contrast agent, a proteinaceous cage based on a stable insulin hexamer in which GdIII is captured inside a water filled cavity. The macromolecular structure and the large number of "free" GdIII coordination sites available for water binding lead to exceptionally high relaxivities per one GdIII ion. The GdIII slowly diffuses out of this cage, but this diffusion can be prevented by addition of ligands that bind to the hexamer. The ligands that trigger structural changes in the hexamer, SCN- , Cl- and phenols, modulate relaxivities through an outside-in signaling that is allosterically transduced through the protein cage. Contrast-o-phores based on protein-caged metal ions have potential to become clinical contrast agents with environmentally-sensitive properties.

In this article, a novel graft polymeric micelle with targeting function ground on aptamer AS1411 was synthesized. The micelle was based on chitosan-ss-polyethylenimine-urocanic acid (CPU) with dual pH/redox sensitivity and targeting effects. This micelle was produced for codelivering Toll-like receptor 4 siRNA (TLR4-siRNA) and doxorubicin (Dox). In vitro investigation revealed the sustained gene and drug release from Dox-siRNA-loaded micelles under physiological conditions, and this codelivery nanosystem exhibited high dual pH/redox sensitivity, rapid intracellular drug release, and improved cytotoxicity against A549 cells in vitro. Furthermore, the micelles loaded with TLR4-siRNA inhibited the migration and invasion of A549. Excellent tumor penetrating efficacy was also noted in the A549 tumor spheroids and solid tumor slices. In vivo, multiple results demonstrated the excellent tumor-targeting ability of AS1411-chitosan-ss-polyethylenimine-urocanic acid (ACPU) micelle in tumor tissues. The micelles exhibited excellent antitumor efficacy and low toxicity in the systemic circulation in lung-tumor-bearing BALB/c mice. These results conclusively demonstrated the great potential of the new graft copolymer micelle with targeting function for the targeted and efficient codelivery of chemotherapeutic drugs and genes in cancer treatment.

The use of helicopter rises discussion about environmental noise propagation especially when it operates in proximity of environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs) for an extended period because of its potential implications in wildlife behaviours. In order to support decisions on helicopter logging operation management in proximity of ESAs, this study focused on (i) analysing the noise spectrum of a light-lift helicopter during logging operations and on (ii) assessing the noise propagation in the surrounding environments. This study investigated a helicopter logging operation for wood fuel extraction in the eastern part of the Italian Alps. The potential disturbance area covered for the entire helicopter logging operation was evaluated by a specific GIS application according to hearing sensitivity of the most sensitive wildlife species in the study area (different strigiform species). The noise level at the ground appeared to be affected by the location regardless both the use of equivalent continuous sound pressures level dB(A) (LAeq) and the single-event level (SEL) noise metrics. The lowest values were recorded when the helicopter was flown over the sound meter level located under the forest canopy, while the highest was recorded when the helicopter was unhooking the loads at the landing. The GIS application highlighted the consistent of the exceeded noise area (weighted to strigiform hearing range and sensitivity) for the lower frequency bands (0.016-0.250 kHz). A more restricted exceeded noise area concerned instead the most sensitive frequency bands" for the strigiform (1-2 kHz). Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Agricultural land use change, especially corn expansion since 2000s, has been accelerating to meet the growing bioenergy demand of the United States. This study identifies the environmentally sensitive lands (ESLs) in the U.S. Midwest using the distance-weighted Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) associated with bioenergy land uses extracted from USDA Cropland Data Layers. The impacts of soil erosion to downstream wetlands and waterbodies in the river basin are counted in the RUSLE with an inverse distance weighting approach. In a GIS-ranking model, the ESLs in 2008 and 2011 (two representative years of corn expansion) are ranked based on their soil erosion severity in crop fields. Under scenarios of bioenergy land use change (corn to grass and grass to corn) on two land types (ESLs and non-ESLs) at three magnitudes (5%, 10% and 15% change), this study assesses the potential environmental impacts of bioenergy land use at a basin level. The ESL distributions and projected trends vary geographically responding to different agricultural conversions. Results support the idea of re-planting native prairie grasses in the identified High and Severe rank ESLs for sustainable bioenergy management in this important agricultural region.

We seek fluorogenic small molecules that generate a fluorescent conjugate signal if and only if they react with a given protein-of-interest (i.e., small molecules for which noncovalent binding to the protein-of-interest is insufficient to generate fluorescence). Consequently, it is the new chemical entity afforded by the generally irreversible reaction between the small molecule and the protein-of-interest that enables the energy of an electron occupying the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the chromophore to be given off as a photon instead of being dissipated by nonradiative mechanisms in complex biological environments. This category of fluorogenic small molecules is created by starting with environmentally sensitive fluorophores that are modified by an essential functional group that efficiently quenches the fluorescence until a chemoselective reaction between that functional group and the protein-of-interest occurs, yielding the fluorescent conjugate. Fluorogenic small molecules are envisioned to be useful for a wide variety of applications, including live cell imaging without the requirement for washing steps and pulse-chase kinetic analyses of protein synthesis, trafficking, degradation, etc.

Fluorescence imaging technology is a versatile and essential tool in the field of biomedical research. To obtain excellent imaging results, the precise labeling of fluorescent probes is an important prerequisite. Nevertheless, the labeling selectivity of most fluorescent probes is not satisfactory, new design concepts are desperately needed. In this context, two isomeric lipid droplets (LDs) fluorescent probes Lipi-Cz-1 and Lipi-Cz-2 have been sophisticatedly developed with TICT and ICT-emitting characteristic, respectively. The more environmentally sensitive TICT-emitting Lipi-Cz-1 exhibits a significantly enhanced labeling selectivity in LDs imaging compared to the ICT-emitting Lipi-Cz-2, sufficiently illustrating the effectiveness of TICT-emitting characteristic in improving labeling selectivity. Additionally, Lipi-Cz-1 displays high photostability and biocompatibility. These advantages enable Lipi-Cz-1 to be finely applied in multimode fluorescence imaging, e.g. time-lapse 3D confocal imaging to monitor changes of the number and size of LDs during starvation, two-photon 3D imaging to compare the variations of LDs in various liver tissues, and STED super-resolution imaging to visualize the nanoscale LDs with the resolution of 65 nm. Overall, these imaging findings validate the effectiveness of the new strategy for improving the labeling selectivity.

The aims of this research is to evaluate the impact of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) information disclosure (using both financial and non-financial information) on stock prices of businesses in Vietnam; From there, propose recommendations to promote transparent practices and information disclosure about ESG of businesses related activities; Contribute to developing sustainable investment goals in businesses, and the financial market in general. Based on the (Ohlson, 1995) [40] valuation model, and developed by Barth and Clinch (2009) [41] the research was conducted empirically in 30 listed companies in Vietnam in the period 2019-2022. Research results based on the GLS method show that ESG positively impacts stock prices. Additionally, this paper conducted an in-depth analysis of each individual pillar and found that the environmental pillar was considered the most meaningful to market participants. However, the correlation between ESG and stock prices is weakened for environmentally sensitive businesses. This study also makes a valuable contribution to the current literature on non-financial information reporting by using manually collected data and investigating the effects of ESG reporting on market participants in the public system voluntary information disclosure system of an emerging market like Vietnam.

This study investigated the germination capacity (endogenous factor) of Petagnaea gussonei (Spreng.) Rauschert, an endemic monospecific plant considered as a relict species of the ancient Mediterranean Tertiary flora. This investigation focused also on the temporal trends of soil-use, climate and desertification (exogenous factors) across the natural range of P. gussonei. The final germination percentage showed low values between 14 and 32%, the latter obtained with GA3 and agar at 10 °C. The rising temperatures in the study area will further increase the dormancy of P. gussonei, whose germination capacity was lower and slower at temperatures higher than 10 °C. A further limiting factor of P. gussonei is its dormancy, which seems to be morpho-physiological. Regarding climate trends, in the period 1931-2020, the average temperature increased by 0.5 °C, from 15.4 to 15.9 °C, in line with the projected climate changes throughout the twenty-first century across the Mediterranean region. The average annual rainfall showed a relatively constant value of c. 900 mm, but extreme events grew considerably in the period 1991-2020. Similarly, the land affected by desertification expanded in an alarming way, by increasing from 21.2% in 2000 to 47.3% in 2020. Soil-use changes created also a complex impacting mosaic where c. 40% are agricultural areas. The effective conservation of P. gussonei should be multilateral by relying on germplasm banks, improving landscape connectivity and vegetation cover, and promoting climate policies.

Peptoids, N-substituted glycine oligomers, can adopt stable three-dimensional structures and have found diverse application as peptide surrogates and as nanomaterials. In this report, we have expanded peptoid function to include pH sensing by coupling pH-induced peptoid conformational changes with fluorescence intensity changes. We report two new peptoids (2 and 3) that comprise carboxylic-acid functionalized side chains and undergo conformational rearrangement in response to pH. Peptoids 2 and 3 are also labeled at one side-chain with an environmentally sensitive fluorophore, 4-N,N-dimethylamino-1,8-naphthalimide (4DMN). The fluorescence intensity of 2 varies 24-fold over the pH range studied. These spectroscopic properties make 2 a sensitive, biocompatible pH sensor.

The plateau pika, a typical hypoxia-tolerant mammal lives 3000-5000 m above sea level on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, has acquired many physiological and morphological characteristics and strategies in its adaptation to sustained, high-altitude hypoxia. Blunted hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction is one such strategy, but the genes involved in this strategy have not been elucidated. Here, we investigated the genes involved and their expression profiles in the lung transcriptome of plateau pikas subjected to different hypoxic conditions (using low-pressure oxygen cabins). A slight, right ventricular hypertrophy was observed in pikas of the control group (altitude: 3200 m) vs. those exposed to 5000 m altitude conditions for one week. Our assembly identified 67,774 genes; compared with their expression in the control animals, 866 and 8364 genes were co-upregulated and co-downregulated, respectively, in pikas subjected to 5000 m altitude conditions for 1 and 4 w. We elucidated pathways that were associated with pulmonary vascular arterial pressure, including vascular smooth muscle contraction, HIF-1 signalling, calcium signalling, cGMP-PKG signalling, and PI3K-Akt signalling based on the differentially expressed genes; the top-100 pathway enrichments were found between the control group and the group exposed to 5000 m altitude conditions for 4 w. The mRNA levels of 18 candidate gene showed that more than 83% of genes were expressed and the number of transcriptome The up-regulated genes were EPAS1, Hbα, iNOS, CX40, CD31, PPM1B, HIF-1α, MYLK, Pcdh12, Surfactant protein B, the down-regulated genes were RYR2, vWF, RASA1, CLASRP, HIF-3α. Our transcriptome data are a valuable resource for future genomic studies on plateau pika.

α-Glucosidase is a potent drug target for treating type II diabetes mellitus. A great number of α-glucosidase inhibitors have been developed based on the molecular skeletons of bioactive natural products. However, efficient fluorescent probes for α-glucosidase detection are still limited, not to mention the probes with additional inhibitory functions. In this work, aiming for the enzyme's highly specific detection, we designed and synthesized two environmentally sensitive fluorescent probes, namely, LD01 and LD02, respectively, based on conjugates of coumarin and cinnamic acid derivatives. We found a significant responsive emission enhancement upon LD02's binding to α-glucosidase. These newly designed probes can act as a simple but efficient tool to evaluate the binding affinity of α-glucosidase to their inhibitors.

Biosensors allow the direct detection of molecular analytes, by associating a biological receptor with a transducer able to convert the analyte-receptor recognition event into a measurable signal. We review recent work aimed at developing synthetic fluorescent molecular sensors for a variety of analytes, based on peptidic receptors labeled with environmentally sensitive fluorophores. Fluorescent indicators based on synthetic peptides are highly interesting alternatives to protein-based sensors, since they can be synthesized chemically, are stable, and can be easily modified in a site-specific manner for fluorophore coupling and for immobilization on solid supports.

Fossil fuels still prevail over other energy sources in the world's consumption energy matrix. Thus, oil transportation and operations over maritime routes have been in high demand for a long time. Although oil spill accidents caused by these activities have reduced significantly over the last few decades, they still cause great concern. From this perspective, this paper presents simulation analyses of oil spill case studies using TELEMAC-3D hydrodynamic model coupled with an oil model. Hence a location susceptible to such accidents was selected and three real oil spills were simulated, for each of which there were official technical monitoring reports available. The obtained results contribute to the knowledge of oil pollution susceptibility in environmentally sensitive areas, as well as provide information concerning oil slick behaviour. Additionally, similarities between the modelled results and the technical reports were confirmed. These findings are useful for contingency planning and responding to these probable accidents.

As the typical range of influence of oil spills surrounds urbanised and economically active areas, it is likely that fragile regions may not be part of the most vulnerable zones. This premise is remediated in this paper with the adoption of a vulnerability approach based on the integration of static and dynamic information, such as oil pollution susceptibility. Susceptibility is a poorly consolidated term and is often used as synonym for environmental sensitivity; it is considered here to be the distribution areas of oil slicks. To test the proposed approach, an integrated estimation of environmental vulnerability is carried out for an environmentally sensitive area in the south of Brazil by merging static data inherent to the medium with information of a dynamic nature related to trajectory, behaviour and the fate of oil at sea. Moreover, the oil pollution intensity and environmental sensitivity data in susceptible areas are addressed. Subsequently, the environmental vulnerability is estimated by integrating hazard maps, concentrations and losses of the mass of the oil slick, oil beaching time and the littoral sensitivity index hierarchy. Results will prove to be useful to highlight critical areas for which the highest levels of severity are expected, which can lead to improvements in decision-making processes to support oil-spill prevention, as well as improve response readiness, especially in developing countries that have historically under-protected their sensitive regions.

Protein aggregation is a process that occurs through the self-assembly of misfolded proteins to form soluble oligomers and insoluble aggregates. While there has been significant interest in protein aggregation for neurodegenerative diseases, progress in this field of research has been limited by the lack of effective methods to detect and interrogate these species in live cells. To resolve this issue, we have developed a new imaging method named the AggTag to report on protein aggregation in live cells with fluorescence microscopy. The AggTag method utilizes a genetic fusion of a protein of interest (POI) to a protein tag to conjugate with the AggTag probe, which contains a fluorophore that turns on its fluorescence upon interaction with protein aggregates. Unlike the conventional methods, this method enables one to detect soluble misfolded oligomers that were previously invisible. Furthermore, the AggTag method has been applied for the simultaneous detection of co-aggregation between two different POIs by a dual-color and orthogonal tagging system. This chapter aims to provide step-by-step procedures of the AggTag method for researchers who intend to study aggregation of POIs in mammalian cell lines.

Our developmental environment significantly affects myriad aspects of our biology, including key life history traits, morphology, physiology, and our susceptibility to disease. This environmentally-induced variation in phenotype is known as plasticity. In many cases, plasticity results from alterations in the rate of synthesis of important developmental hormones. However, while developmental processes like organ growth are sensitive to environmental conditions, others like patterning - the process that generates distinct cell identities - remain robust to perturbation. This is particularly surprising given that the same hormones that regulate organ growth also regulate organ patterning. In this review, we revisit the current approaches that address how organs coordinate their growth and pattern, and outline our hypotheses for understanding how organs achieve correct pattern across a range of sizes.
