INTRODUCTION: Academic departments universally communicate information about their programs using static websites. In addition to websites, some programs have even ventured out into social media (SM). These bidirectional forms of SM interaction show great promise; even hosting a live Question and Answer (Q&A) session has the potential for program branding. Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in the form of a chatbot has expanded on websites and in SM. The potential use of chatbots, for the purposes of trainee recruitment, is novel and underutilized. With this pilot study, we aimed to answer the question; can the use of an Artificially Intelligent Chatbot and a Virtual Question-and-Answer Session aid in recruitment in a Post-COVID-19 era? METHODS: We held three structured Question-and-Answer Sessions over a period of 2 weeks. This preliminary study was performed after completion of the three Q&A sessions, in March-May, 2021. All 258 applicants to the pain fellowship program were invited via email to participate in the survey after attending one of the Q&A sessions. A 16-item survey assessing participants' perception of the chatbot was administered. RESULTS: Forty-eight pain fellowship applicants completed the survey, for an average response rate of 18.6%. In all, 35 (73%) of survey respondents had used the website chatbot, and 84% indicated that it had found them the information they were seeking. CONCLUSION: We employed an artificially intelligent chatbot on the department website to engage in a bidirectional exchange with users to adapt to changes brought on by the pandemic. SM engagement via chatbot and Q&A sessions can leave a favorable impression and improve the perception of a program.

BACKGROUND: Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays an important role in many fields, including medical education, practice, and research. Many medical educators started using ChatGPT at the end of 2022 for many purposes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the potential uses, benefits, and risks of using ChatGPT in education modules on integrated pharmacotherapy of infectious disease. METHODS: A content analysis was conducted to investigate the applications of ChatGPT in education modules on integrated pharmacotherapy of infectious disease. Questions pertaining to curriculum development, syllabus design, lecture note preparation, and examination construction were posed during data collection. Three experienced professors rated the appropriateness and precision of the answers provided by ChatGPT. The consensus rating was considered. The professors also discussed the prospective applications, benefits, and risks of ChatGPT in this educational setting. RESULTS: ChatGPT demonstrated the ability to contribute to various aspects of curriculum design, with ratings ranging from 50% to 92% for appropriateness and accuracy. However, there were limitations and risks associated with its use, including incomplete syllabi, the absence of essential learning objectives, and the inability to design valid questionnaires and qualitative studies. It was suggested that educators use ChatGPT as a resource rather than relying primarily on its output. There are recommendations for effectively incorporating ChatGPT into the curriculum of the education modules on integrated pharmacotherapy of infectious disease. CONCLUSIONS: Medical and health sciences educators can use ChatGPT as a guide in many aspects related to the development of the curriculum of the education modules on integrated pharmacotherapy of infectious disease, syllabus design, lecture notes preparation, and examination preparation with caution.

INTRODUCTION: Although similar in many aspects of manufacturing and regulatory provisions to medicines, medical devices have their provisions and attract considerable investments in manufacturing and innovation. While the U.S. holds the leading global position in the devices market, Asia Pacific (APAC) countries like China, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea have proved tremendous market potential holding top ten positions. Still, many APAC countries are import-reliant due to hurdles in technological innovation and regulatory provisions. AREAS COVERED: The review aimed to explore those predictors or hurdles and analyzed these to enhance the region's export capacity gradually. EXPERT OPINION: Policymakers in APAC countries with no device manufacturing and health technology assessment capacities would be benefited from the review. The findings showed the presence of a gap in manufacturing, innovation, and marketing of devices within the APAC region and between APAC and western countries. Stringent regulatory measures and quality indicators are still lacking in many APAC nations, and there is an urgent need to harmonize regulatory standards. Being a region constituting over one-third of the global population, a considerable investment in innovation, manufacturing, and establishing quality standards is urgently needed among APAC countries to ensure an adequate supply of quality medical devices.

BACKGROUND: Surgical training is evolving, and simulation is becoming more important as a way to expedite the early learning curve and augment surgical techniques. With novel technology, and innovation, major changes are possible in how surgeons are trained. The integration of these concepts into the surgical curriculum may drive up educational standards and enhance patient safety. This survey sought to determine surgical trainees views on the current place of simulation in surgical training and explore their vision for the future. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a prospective, questionnaire-based cross-sectional study by *** and the ***, England. Surgical trainees were surveyed about their experiences of simulation during their training through an electronic questionnaire distributed in the UK and Republic of Ireland through mailing lists of RCS and ***. Quantitative and qualitative research methodology was used. RESULTS: Of 462 surveys submitted, a total of 323 were fully completed and included in the analysis. Core Surgical Trainees represented 28.4% of respondents. The vast majority of respondents (98.9%) considered that simulation training was important, however 55.0% felt it was delivered inadequately. 86.2% wanted greater access to simulation training: Less than half of respondents had access to simulation training at their current place of work or had simulation incorporated into their formal teaching programme (42.4% and 41.6% respectively). CONCLUSION: This study highlights the importance of simulation to trainees. Delivery and accessibility of simulation training varies widely. We highlight areas for improvement and best practice. In a culture of accountability, where patient safety is our highest priority, a "see one, do one, teach one" approach to training is no longer appropriate; instead we must utilise available simulation tools to augment learning.

"-Omics" systems sciences are at the epicenter of personalized medicine and public health, and drivers of knowledge-based biotechnology innovation. Bioinformatics, a core component of omics research, is one of the disciplines that first employed Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS), and thus provided a fertile ground for its further development. Understanding the use and characteristics of FLOSS deployed in the omics field is valuable for future innovation strategies, policy and funding priorities. We conducted a bibliometric, longitudinal study of the use of FLOSS in sepsis omics research from 2011 to 2015 in the United States, EU-28 and China. Because sepsis is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of multiple omics technologies and medical specialties, it was chosen as a model innovation ecosystem for this empirical analysis, which used publicly available data. Despite development of and competition from proprietary commercial software, scholars in omics continue to employ FLOSS routinely, and independent of the type of omics technology they work with. The number of articles using FLOSS increased significantly over time in the EU-28, as opposed to the United States and China (R = 0.96, p = 0.004). Furthermore, in an era where sharing of knowledge is being strongly advocated and promoted by public agencies and social institutions, we discuss possible correlations between the use of FLOSS and various funding sources in omics research. These observations and analyses provide new insights into the use of FLOSS in sepsis omics research across three (supra)national regions. Further benchmarking studies are warranted for FLOSS trends in other omics fields and geographical settings. These could, in time, lead to the development of new composite innovation and technology use metrics in omics systems sciences and bioinformatics communities.
