RESUMO

Primordial volatiles were delivered to terrestrial reservoirs during Earth's accretion, and the mantle plume source is thought to have retained a greater proportion of primordial volatiles compared with the upper mantle. This study shows that mantle He, Ne, and Xe isotopes require that the plume mantle had low concentrations of volatiles like Xe and H2O at the end of accretion compared with the upper mantle. A lower extent of mantle processing alone is not sufficient to explain plume noble gas signatures. Ratios of primordial isotopes are used to determine proportions of solar, chondritic, and regassed atmospheric volatiles in the plume mantle and upper mantle. The regassed Ne flux exceeds the regassed Xe flux but has a small impact on the mantle Ne budget. Pairing primordial isotopes with radiogenic systems gives an absolute concentration of 130Xe in the plume source of ∼1.5 × 107 atoms 130Xe/g at the end of accretion, ∼4 times less than that determined for the ancient upper mantle. A record of limited accretion of volatile-rich solids thus survives in the He-Ne-Xe signatures of mantle rocks today. A primordial viscosity contrast originating from a factor of ∼4 to ∼250 times lower H2O concentration in the plume mantle compared with the upper mantle may explain (a) why giant impacts that triggered whole mantle magma oceans did not homogenize the growing planet, (b) why the plume mantle has experienced less processing by partial melting over Earth's history, and (c) how early-formed isotopic heterogeneities may have survived ∼4.5 Gy of solid-state mantle convection.

Although hyperpolarized (HP) 129Xe ventilation MRI can be carried out within a breath hold, it is still challenging for many sick patients. Compressed sensing (CS) is a viable alternative to accelerate this approach. However, undersampled images with identical sampling ratios differ from one another. Twenty subjects (n = 10 healthy and n = 10 patients with asthma) were scanned using a GE MR750 3 T scanner, acquiring fully sampled 2D multi-slice HP 129Xe lung ventilation images (10 s breath hold, 128 × 80 (FE × PE-frequency encoding × phase encoding) and 16 slices). Using fully sampled data, 500 variable-density Cartesian random undersampling patterns were generated, each at eight different sampling ratios from 10% to 80%. The parallel imaging and compressed sensing (PICS) command from BART was employed to reconstruct undersampled data. The signal to noise ratio (SNR), structural similarity index measurement (SSIM) and sidelobe to peak ratio of each were subsequently compared. There was a high degree of variation in both SNR and SSIM results from each of the 500 masks of each sampling rate. As the undersampling increases, there is more variation in the quantifying metrics, for both healthy and asthmatic individuals. Our study shows that random undersampling poses a significant challenge when applied at sampling ratios less than 60%, despite fulfilling CS's incoherency criteria. Such low sampling ratios will result in a large variety of undersampling patterns. Therefore, skipped segments of k-space cannot be allowed to happen randomly at low sampling rates. By optimizing the sampling pattern, CS will reach its full potential and be able to be applied to a highly undersampled 129Xe lung dataset.

The fluorobasic character of the strong oxidative fluorinator, XeF6 , and the oxidative resistance of the [XeF5 ]+ and [Xe2 F11 ]+ cations have been exploited for the syntheses of several novel Cr(VI) dianion salts. The reactions of XeF6 and CrO2 F2 in anhydrous HF and by direct fusion of the reactants in melts have yielded the first dinuclear Cr(VI) oxyfluoro-dianion salts, [XeF5 ]2 [Cr2 O4 F6 ], [XeF5 ]2 [Cr2 O4 F6 ] ⋅ 4HF, [XeF5 ]2 [Cr2 O4 F6 ] ⋅ 2XeOF4 , and mononuclear Cr(VI) oxyfluoro-dianion salt, [XeF5 ][Xe2 F11 ][CrO2 F4 ]. The salts were structurally characterized by low-temperature (LT) single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and LT Raman spectroscopy. The [CrO2 F4 ]2- and [Cr2 O4 F6 ]2- dianions have distorted octahedral cis-dioxo Cr(VI) coordination spheres in which two F-atoms are trans to one another and two F-atoms are trans to O-atoms, where the [Cr2 O4 F6 ]2- dianion is the fluorine-bridged dimer of the [CrO2 F3 ]- anion. Quantum-chemical calculations were used to obtain the energy-minimized, gas-phase geometries, and the calculated vibrational spectra of the gas-phase dianions and their ion-pairs, which were used to aid in the vibrational frequency assignments of the crystalline salts. NBO and MEPS analyses and SCXRD show these salts are comprised of intimate ion-pairs in which their cations and anions interact through primarily electrostatic Xe- - -F σ-hole bonds.

The escape of xenon from the anti and syn diastereomers of hexacarboxylic-cryptophane-222 in water has been studied by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The structures of both complexes, when the xenon atom is trapped inside their cages, have been compared and show no major differences. The free-energy profiles corresponding to the escape reaction have been calculated with the Blue Moon ensemble method using the distance between Xe and the center of mass of the cage as the reaction coordinate. The resulting free-energy barriers are very different; the escape rate is much faster in the case of the syn diastereomer, in agreement with experimental data obtained in hyperpolarized 129 Xe NMR. Our simulations reveal the mechanistic details for each diastereomer and provide an explanation for the different in-out xenon rates based on the solvation structure around the cages.

Various aza-crowns with different sizes and substituents have been explored computationally as potential hosts for stabilizing the explosive guest xenon trioxide (XeO3) through σ-hole-mediated aerogen bonding interactions. Interestingly, aza-crowns demonstrate superior binding towards XeO3 compared to their oxygen and thio counterparts. However, unlike the latter cases, where the binding was found to be increasingly favorable with the increase in the size of the crowns, aza-crowns exhibit a variable size preference for XeO3, peaking with aza-15-crown-5, and reducing thereafter with increase in crown size.

There is an increased appreciation for the importance of the right heart and pulmonary circulation in several disease states across the spectrum of pulmonary hypertension and left heart failure. However, assessment of the structure and function of the right heart and pulmonary circulation can be challenging, due to the complex geometry of the right ventricle, comorbid pulmonary airways and parenchymal disease, and the overlap of hemodynamic abnormalities with left heart failure. Several new and evolving imaging modalities interrogate the right heart and pulmonary circulation with greater diagnostic precision. Echocardiographic approaches such as speckle-tracking and 3-dimensional imaging provide detailed assessments of regional systolic and diastolic function and volumetric assessments. Magnetic resonance approaches can provide high-resolution views of cardiac structure/function, tissue characterization, and perfusion through the pulmonary vasculature. Molecular imaging with positron emission tomography allows an assessment of specific pathobiologically relevant targets in the right heart and pulmonary circulation. Machine learning analysis of high-resolution computed tomographic lung scans permits quantitative morphometry of the lung circulation without intravenous contrast. Inhaled magnetic resonance imaging probes, such as hyperpolarized 129Xe magnetic resonance imaging, report on pulmonary gas exchange and pulmonary capillary hemodynamics. These approaches provide important information on right ventricular structure and function along with perfusion through the pulmonary circulation. At this time, the majority of these developing technologies have yet to be clinically validated, with few studies demonstrating the utility of these imaging biomarkers for diagnosis or monitoring disease. These technologies hold promise for earlier diagnosis and noninvasive monitoring of right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension that will aid in preclinical studies, enhance patient selection and provide surrogate end points in clinical trials, and ultimately improve bedside care.

BACKGROUND: We have earlier reported that inhaled xenon combined with hypothermia attenuates brain white matter injury in comatose survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). A predefined secondary objective was to assess the effect of inhaled xenon on the structural changes in gray matter in comatose survivors after OHCA. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to receive either inhaled xenon combined with target temperature management (33 °C) for 24 h (n = 55, xenon group) or target temperature management alone (n = 55, control group). A change of brain gray matter volume was assessed with a voxel-based morphometry evaluation of high-resolution structural brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data with Statistical Parametric Mapping. Patients were scheduled to undergo the first MRI between 36 and 52 h and a second MRI 10 days after OHCA. RESULTS: Of the 110 randomly assigned patients in the Xe-Hypotheca trial, 66 patients completed both MRI scans. After all imaging-based exclusions, 21 patients in the control group and 24 patients in the xenon group had both scan 1 and scan 2 available for analyses with scans that fulfilled the quality criteria. Compared with the xenon group, the control group had a significant decrease in brain gray matter volume in several clusters in the second scan compared with the first. In a between-group analysis, significant reductions were found in the right amygdala/entorhinal cortex (p = 0.025), left amygdala (p = 0.043), left middle temporal gyrus (p = 0.042), left inferior temporal gyrus (p = 0.008), left parahippocampal gyrus (p = 0.042), left temporal pole (p = 0.042), and left cerebellar cortex (p = 0.005). In the remaining gray matter areas, there were no significant changes between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: In comatose survivors of OHCA, inhaled xenon combined with targeted temperature management preserved gray matter better than hypothermia alone. RESUMO

Molecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an emerging field that is set to revolutionize our perspective of disease diagnosis, treatment efficacy monitoring, and precision medicine in full concordance with personalized medicine. A wide range of hyperpolarized (HP) 129Xe biosensors have been recently developed, demonstrating their potential applications in molecular settings, and achieving notable success within in vitro studies. The favorable nuclear magnetic resonance properties of 129Xe, coupled with its non-toxic nature, high solubility in biological tissues, and capacity to dissolve in blood and diffuse across membranes, highlight its superior role for applications in molecular MRI settings. The incorporation of reporters that combine signal enhancement from both hyperpolarized 129Xe and chemical exchange saturation transfer holds the potential to address the primary limitation of low sensitivity observed in conventional MRI. This review provides a summary of the various applications of HP 129Xe biosensors developed over the last decade, specifically highlighting their use in MRI. Moreover, this paper addresses the evolution of in vivo applications of HP 129Xe, discussing its potential transition into clinical settings.

The question of what generates conscious experience has mesmerized thinkers since the dawn of humanity, yet its origins remain a mystery. The topic of consciousness has gained traction in recent years, thanks to the development of large language models that now arguably pass the Turing test, an operational test for intelligence. However, intelligence and consciousness are not related in obvious ways, as anyone who suffers from a bad toothache can attest-pain generates intense feelings and absorbs all our conscious awareness, yet nothing particularly intelligent is going on. In the hard sciences, this topic is frequently met with skepticism because, to date, no protocol to measure the content or intensity of conscious experiences in an observer-independent manner has been agreed upon. Here, we present a novel proposal: Conscious experience arises whenever a quantum mechanical superposition forms. Our proposal has several implications: First, it suggests that the structure of the superposition determines the qualia of the experience. Second, quantum entanglement naturally solves the binding problem, ensuring the unity of phenomenal experience. Finally, a moment of agency may coincide with the formation of a superposition state. We outline a research program to experimentally test our conjecture via a sequence of quantum biology experiments. Applying these ideas opens up the possibility of expanding human conscious experience through brain-quantum computer interfaces.

We studied the effectiveness of Xe/O2 mixture inhalation (30% Xe and 70% O2, 20 min for 5 days) in a model of experimental thromboplastin pneumonitis. Inhalation of the studied mixture decreased the intensity of the inflammatory process in the lung tissue assessed by the temperature response of animals, changed lung weight and lung weight coefficient. At acute stage of pneumonitis, an increase in xenon consumption was recorded due to its retention in the gas exchange zone and a natural decrease in oxygen consumption due to partial alveolar/capillary block. The formation of pneumonitis was accompanied by a pronounced procoagulant shift in the regulation system of the aggregate state of blood. The Xe/O2 inhalations ensured physiologically optimal levels of prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin time against the background of a moderate decrease in fibrinogen level throughout the experiment. At the same time, the activity of the natural anticoagulant antithrombin III increased from day 5 to day 14.

In in vitro model of short-term therapeutic inhalation of Xe/O2 mixture, xenon in millimolar concentrations led to a pronounced decrease in induced platelet aggregation in the platelet-enriched blood plasma. The maximum and statistically significant decrease occurred in response to induction by collagen (by ≈30%, p≤0.01) and ADP (by ≈25%, p≤0.01). A slightly weaker but statistically significant reduction in aggregation appeared in response to ristocetin (by ≈12%, p≤0.01) and epinephrine (by ≈9%, p≤0.01). It should be noted that the spontaneous aggregation exceeded the reference values in the control group. Nevertheless, even at minimal absolute values, spontaneous platelet aggregation decreased by 2 times in response to xenon (p≤0.01). The reasons for the decrease of spontaneous and induced aggregation are xenon accumulation in the lipid bilayer of the membrane with subsequent nonspecific (mechanical) disassociation of membrane platelet structures and specific block of its distinct from neuronal NMDA receptor.

The development of adsorbents for Kr and Xe separation is essential to meet industrial demands and for energy conservation. Although a number of previous studies have focused on Xe-selective adsorbents, stimuli-responsive Xe/Kr-selective adsorbents still remain underdeveloped. Herein, a Hofmann-type framework Co(DABCO)[Ni(CN)4 ] (referred to as CoNi-DAB; DABCO = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane) that provides a temperature-dependent switchable Xe/Kr separation performance is reported. CoNi-DAB showed high Kr/Xe (0.8/0.2) selectivity with significant Kr adsorption at 195 K as well as high Xe/Kr (0.2/0.8) selectivity with superior Xe adsorption at 298 K. Such adsorption features are associated with the temperature-dependent rotational configuration of the DABCO ligand, which affects the kinetic gate-opening temperature of Xe and Kr. The packing densities of Xe (2.886 g cm-3 at 298 K) and Kr (2.399 g  cm-3 at 195 K) inside the framework are remarkable and comparable with those of liquid Xe (3.057 g cm-3 ) and liquid Kr (2.413 g cm-3 ), respectively. Breakthrough experiments confirm the temperature-dependent reverse separation performance of CoNi-DAB at 298 K under dry and wet (88% relative humidity) conditions and at 195 K under dry conditions. The unique adsorption behavior is also verified through van der Waals (vdW)-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations and nudged elastic band (NEB) simulations.

Although hypodermic needles are a "gold standard" for transdermal drug delivery (TDD), microneedle (MN)-mediated TDD denotes an unconventional approach in which drug compounds are delivered via micron-size needles. Herein, an isotropic XeF2 dry etching process is explored to fabricate silicon-based solid MNs. A photolithographic process, including mask writing, UV exposure, and dry etching with XeF2 is employed, and the MN fabrication is successfully customized by modifying the CAD designs, photolithographic process, and etching conditions. This study enables fabrication of a very dense MNs (up to 1452 MNs cm-2 ) with height varying between 80 and 300 µm. Geometrical features are also assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D laser scanning microscope. Roughness of the MNs are improved from 0.71 to 0.35 µm after titanium and chromium coating. Mechanical failure test is conducted using dynamic mechanical analyzer to determine displacement and stress/strain values. The coated MNs are subjected to less displacement (≈15 µm) upon the applied force. COMSOL Multiphysics analysis indicates that MNs are safe to use in real-life applications with no fracture. This technique also enables the production of MNs with distinct shape and dimensions. The optimized process provides a wide range of solid MN types to be utilized for epidermis targeting.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the feasibility of a multi-breath xenon-polarization transfer contrast (XTC) MR imaging approach for simultaneously evaluating regional ventilation and gas exchange parameters. METHODS: Imaging was performed in five healthy volunteers and six chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. The multi-breath XTC protocol consisted of three repeated schemes of six wash-in breaths of a xenon mixture and four normoxic wash-out breaths, with and without selective saturation of either the tissue membrane or red blood cell (RBC) resonances. Acquisitions were performed at end-exhalation while subjects maintained tidal breathing throughout the session. The no-saturation, membrane-saturation, and RBC-saturation images were fit to a per-breath gas replacement model for extracting voxelwise tidal volume (TV), functional residual capacity (FRC), and fractional ventilation (FV), as well as tissue- and RBC-gas exchange (fMem and fRBC , respectively). The sensitivity of the derived model was also evaluated via simulations. RESULTS: With the exception of FRC, whole-lung averages for all metrics were decreased in the COPD subjects compared to the healthy cohort, significantly so for FV, fRBC , and fMem . Heterogeneity was higher overall in the COPD subjects, particularly for fRBC , fMem , and fRBC:Mem . The anterior-to-posterior gradient associated with the gravity-dependence of lung function in supine imaging was also evident for FV, fRBC , and fMem values in the healthy subjects, but noticeably absent in the COPD cohort. CONCLUSION: Multi-breath XTC imaging generated high-resolution, co-registered maps of ventilation and gas exchange parameters acquired during tidal breathing and with low per-breath xenon doses. Clear differences between healthy and COPD subjects were apparent and consistent with spirometry.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess the intra- and interscan repeatability of free-breathing phase-resolved functional lung (PREFUL) MRI in stable pediatric cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease in comparison to static breath-hold hyperpolarized 129-xenon MRI (Xe-MRI) and pulmonary function tests. METHODS: Free-breathing 1-hydrogen MRI and Xe-MRI were acquired from 15 stable pediatric CF patients and seven healthy age-matched participants on two visits, 1 month apart. Same-visit MRI scans were also performed on a subgroup of the CF patients. Following the PREFUL algorithm, regional ventilation (RVent) and regional flow volume loop cross-correlation maps were determined from the free-breathing data. Ventilation defect percentage (VDP) was determined from RVent maps (VDPRVent ), regional flow volume loop cross-correlation maps (VDPCC ), VDPRVent ∪ VDPCC , and multi-slice Xe-MRI. Repeatability was evaluated using Bland-Altman analysis, coefficient of repeatability (CR), and intraclass correlation. RESULTS: Minimal bias and no significant differences were reported for all PREFUL MRI and Xe-MRI VDP parameters between intra- and intervisits (all P > 0.05). Repeatability of VDPRVent , VDPCC , VDPRVent ∪ VDPCC , and multi-slice Xe-MRI were lower between the two-visit scans (CR = 14.81%, 15.36%, 16.19%, and 9.32%, respectively) in comparison to the same-day scans (CR = 3.38%, 2.90%, 1.90%, and 3.92%, respectively). pulmonary function tests showed high interscan repeatability relative to PREFUL MRI and Xe-MRI. CONCLUSION: PREFUL MRI, similar to Xe-MRI, showed high intravisit repeatability but moderate intervisit repeatability in CF, which may be due to inherent disease instability, even in stable patients. Thus, PREFUL MRI may be considered a suitable outcome measure for future treatment response studies.

PURPOSE: To compare the effect of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) on the T1 of 129 Xe and 1 H and to measure the relaxation of 129 Xe in blood at low and high magnetic field strengths. METHODS: 129 Xe and 1 H T1 relaxometry was performed at low- and high-field strengths in samples containing different SPION concentrations, while imaging was used to compare the contrast obtainable in these two field regimes. In vivo experiments at variable field strengths were performed to determine the depolarization of 129 Xe in blood and the feasibility of in vivo dissolved-phase spectroscopy and imaging at low field. RESULTS: The SPION relaxivity was substantially greater at low field for 1 H, increasing from 0.92 ± 0.06 mM s-1 at 11.7T to 31.5 ± 1.8 mM s-1 at 0.6 mT, and for 129 Xe, which increased from 0.13 ± 0.03 mM s-1 at 11.7T to 7.32 ± 0.71 mM s-1 at 2.1 mT. The additional MR signal loss increased from 0.7% at 9.4T to 20.6 ± 4.2% at 0.6 mT for 1 H and from -0.7 ± 3.4% at 9.4T to 12.7 ± 3.5% at 2.1 mT for 129 Xe. Blood was found to depolarize 129 Xe below 3T in a manner inversely proportional to the field strength. In vitro studies at 2.1 mT suggest 129 Xe relaxation times below 5 s in blood dilutions as low as 0.4% volume. CONCLUSION: SPIONs longitudinal relaxivity increases at low field both for 1 H and 129 Xe. The depolarization of xenon in blood, which is found to increase below 3T, effectively prevents in vivo dissolved-phase spectroscopy and imaging at low-field strengths.

BACKGROUND: Free-breathing 1 H ventilation MRI shows promise but only single-center validation has yet been performed against methods which directly image lung ventilation in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between 129 Xe and 1 H ventilation images using data acquired at two centers. STUDY TYPE: Sequence comparison. POPULATION: Center 1; 24 patients with CF (12 female) aged 9-47 years. Center 2; 7 patients with CF (6 female) aged 13-18 years, and 6 healthy controls (6 female) aged 21-31 years. Data were acquired in different patients at each center. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 1.5 T, 3D steady-state free precession and 2D spoiled gradient echo. ASSESSMENT: Subjects were scanned with 129 Xe ventilation and 1 H free-breathing MRI and performed pulmonary function tests. Ventilation defect percent (VDP) was calculated using linear binning and images were visually assessed by H.M., L.J.S., and G.J.C. (10, 5, and 8 years' experience). STATISTICAL TESTS: Correlations and linear regression analyses were performed between 129 Xe VDP, 1 H VDP, FEV1 , and LCI. Bland-Altman analysis of 129 Xe VDP and 1 H VDP was carried out. Differences in metrics were assessed using one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis tests. RESULTS: 129 Xe VDP and 1 H VDP correlated strongly with; each other (r = 0.84), FEV1 z-score (129 Xe VDP r = -0.83, 1 H VDP r = -0.80), and LCI (129 Xe VDP r = 0.91, 1 H VDP r = 0.82). Bland-Altman analysis of 129 Xe VDP and 1 H VDP from both centers had a bias of 0.07% and limits of agreement of -16.1% and 16.2%. Linear regression relationships of VDP with FEV1 were not significantly different between 129 Xe and 1 H VDP (P = 0.08), while 129 Xe VDP had a stronger relationship with LCI than 1 H VDP. DATA CONCLUSION: 1 H ventilation MRI shows large-scale agreement with 129 Xe ventilation MRI in CF patients with established lung disease but may be less sensitive to subtle ventilation changes in patients with early-stage lung disease. The latest clinical trials have reported conflicting outcomes regarding the effectiveness of xenon anesthesia in preventing postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction; thus, this study assessed the existing evidence. We searched the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases from inception to April 9, 2023, for randomized controlled trials of xenon anesthesia in postoperative patients. We included English-language randomized controlled studies of adult patients undergoing surgery with xenon anesthesia that compared its effects to those of other anesthetics. Duplicate studies, pediatric studies, and ongoing clinical trials were excluded. Nine studies with 754 participants were identified. A forest plot revealed that the incidence of postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction did not differ between the xenon anesthesia and control groups (P = 0.43). Additionally, xenon anesthesia significantly shortened the emergence time for time to opening eyes (P < 0.001), time to extubation (P < 0.001), time to react on demand (P = 0.01), and time to time and spatial orientation (P = 0.04). However, the Aldrete score significantly increased with xenon anesthesia (P = 0.005). Postoperative complications did not differ between the anesthesia groups. Egger's test for bias showed no small-study effect, and a trim-and-fill analysis showed no apparent publication bias. In conclusion, xenon anesthesia probably did not affect the occurrence of postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction. However, xenon anesthesia may effectively shorten the emergence time of certain parameters without adverse effects.

The purpose of the study is to explore the underlying mechanisms of xenon (Xe) which protects against spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury (SCIRI). A SCIRI rat model was induced by abdominal artery occlusion for 85 min and reperfusion. Xe postconditioning (50% Xe) was administered 1 h after 1 h of reperfusion. At reperfusion time points (2, 4, 6, and 24 h), rats were treated with spinal cord scans by MRI to assess the time of peak spinal cord injury after SCIRI. Subsequently, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress inhibitor sodium 4-phenylbutyrate (4-PBA) was administered by daily intraperitoneal injection (50 mg/kg) for 5 days before SCIRI. At 4 h after reperfusion, motor function, immunofluorescence staining, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, Nissl staining, TUNEL staining, real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain (RT-PCR) reaction, and western blot analyses were performed to investigate the protective effects of Xe against SCIRI. In the rat I/R model, spinal cord edema peaked at reperfusion 4 h. SCIRI activated ER stress, which was located in neurons. Xe postconditioning remarkably alleviated hind limb motor function, reduced neuronal apoptosis rate, increased the number of normal neurons, and inhibited the expression of ER stress-related protein in spinal cord. Furthermore, the administration of the ER stress inhibitor 4-PBA strongly decreased ER stress-induced apoptosis following SCIRI. Xe postconditioning inhibits ER stress activation, which contributes to alleviate SCIRI by suppressing neuronal apoptosis.

Pyriclobenzuron 1(PBU) is a novel molluscicide developed to control Pomacea canaliculate, and little information on its environmental fate has been published. In this study, the photolysis of PBU in an aqueous environment was simulated using a xenon lamp. Results showed that the photolysis of PBU in water followed first-order kinetics, exhibiting a t0.5 of 95.1 h and 83.6 h in Milli-Q water and river water, respectively. Two main photolysis products 2(PPs) were detected by HPLC-UV and identified by UPLC-Q/TOF MS, which were formed via the hydroxylation and photocatalytic hydro-dehalogenation of PBU, respectively. The initial relative abundance of photolysis product 1 3(PP-1) in Milli-Q water was 1.55 times higher than that in river water. PP-1 was detected at 26.5 % and 76.8 % of the maximum relative abundance in the river water and Milli-Q water after 720 h, respectively. Photolysis product 2 4(PP-2) was stable in water because of its weak hydrophilicity. The PP-2 detected after 720 h in Milli-Q water and river water was 93.7 % and 93.5 % of the maximum relative abundance, respectively. Finally, ECOSAR software was used to evaluate the acute aquatic toxicity of PBU and its PPs, revealing that the PPs had lower toxicity levels to non-target aquatic organisms.
