Two known tin-based polymers of formula {[R3Sn(CH3COO)]n} where R = n-Bu⁻ (1) and R = Ph⁻ (2),were evaluated for their in vitro biological properties. The compounds were characterized via their physical properties and FT-IR, 119Sn Mössbauer, and ¹H NMR spectroscopic data. The molecular structures were confirmed by single-crystal X-Ray diffraction crystallography. The geometry around the tin(IV) ion is trigonal bi-pyramidal. Variations in O⁻Sn⁻O···Sn' torsion angles lead to zig-zag and helical supramolecular assemblies for 1 and 2, respectively. The in vitro cell viability against human breast adenocarcinoma cancer cell lines: MCF-7 positive to estrogens receptors (ERs) and MDA-MB-231 negative to ERs upon their incubation with 1 and 2 was investigated. Their toxicity has been studied against normal human fetal lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5). Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit 134 and 223-fold respectively stronger antiproliferative activity against MDA-MB-231 than cisplatin. The type of the cell death caused by 1 or 2 was also determined using flow cytometry assay. The binding affinity of 1 and 2 towards the CT-DNA was suspected from the differentiation of the viscosity which occurred in the solution containing increasing amounts of 1 and 2. Changes in fluorescent emission light of Ethidium bromide (EB) in the presence of DNA confirmed the intercalation mode of interactions into DNA of both complexes 1 and 2 which have been ascertained from viscosity measurements. The corresponding apparent binding constants (Kapp) of 1 and 2 towards CT-DNA calculated through fluorescence spectra are 4.9 × 104 (1) and 7.3 × 104 (2) M-1 respectively. Finally, the type of DNA binding interactions with 1 and 2 was confirmed by docking studies.

Levels of tributyltin and its breakdown compounds, including the first record of monobutyltin (MBT) in history for Latin America, were determined in native mussels (Brachidontes rodriguezii) by means of CG-MS, after extraction/derivatization assisted by ultrasound. The samples were collected in 2013 in Bahía Blanca Estuary (Argentina) at 6 sites, which reflect different levels of maritime activities. Total butyltins (TBts = TBT+ DBT+ MBT) levels ranged from 19.64 to 180.57ng Sn g-1 dry weight. According to the Oslo-Paris commission, the results indicated that 73.9% of mussels could be under biological effects risks associated with TBT pollution. In accordance with the calculated bioaccumulation factors, approximately 56% of samples appeared to have accumulated TBT through the sediments. All sampling sites were shown to be impacted by organotin compounds (OTCs) showing variable levels through seasons, which could be related with the variation of the water temperature. Degradation index analyses suggested aged inputs of TBT possibly under a general degradation process at the area of study. In addition, the occurrence of DBT and MBT could not be uniquely attributed to the degradation pathway of the TBT; in fact, results outlined the possible contribution of some punctual and diffuse sources at the area such as proximity to plastic industries, industrial effluents, sewage outlets and domestic wastewaters.

In the present work, data on the levels of hazardous Organotin compounds in eight commercially important fish species, caught from Arabian Gulf, has been reported. Highest levels of tributyltin (TBT) (98.5 ng/g dry weight) were detected in Epinephelus Tauvina whereas minimum (43.7 ng/g) were found in Acanthoparagus Bifasciatus. Highest levels of triphenyltin (TPT) were detected in Lethrinus Miniatus (107.5 ng/g) whereas lowest were encountered in Acanthoparagus Bifasciatus (64.9 ng/g). Highest value of total butyltin compounds (∑BT) were found in emperors (Lethrinus Miniatus) (228.4 ng/g) whereas minimum was found in Acanthoparagus Bifasciatus (126.4 ng/g). Similarly highest value of total phenyltin compounds (∑PT) was encountered in Epinephelus Tauvina (281.9 ng/g) followed closely by Acanthoparagus Bifasciatus (281.7 ng/g). In addition, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of the local population from consumption of these fish was also evaluated. Highest EDI was found to be 10.8 ng/kg bw/day for epinephelus microdan. The data are also compared internationally.

PROPOSE: Tin complexes demonstrate antiproliferative activities in some case higher than cisplatin, with IC50 at the low micromolar range. We have previously showed that the cyclic trinuclear complex of Sn(IV) bearing an aromatic oximehydroxamic acid group [nBu2Sn(L)]3 (L=N,2-dihydroxy-5-[N-hydroxyethanimidoyl]benzamide) (MG85) shows high anti-proliferative activity, induces apoptosis and oxidative stress, and causes destabilization of tubulin microtubules, particularly in colorectal carcinoma cells. Despite the great efficacy towards cancer cells, this complex still shows some cytotoxicity to healthy cells. Targeted delivery of this complex specifically towards cancer cells might foster cancer treatment. METHODS: MG85 complex was encapsulated into liposomal formulation with and without an active targeting moiety and cancer and healthy cells cytotoxicity was evaluated. RESULTS: Encapsulation of MG85 complex in targeting PEGylated liposomes enhanced colorectal carcinoma (HCT116) cancer cell death when compared to free complex, whilst decreasing cytotoxicity in non-tumor cells. Labeling of liposomes with Rhodamine allowed assessing internalization in cells, which showed significant cell uptake after 6 h of incubation. Cetuximab was used as targeting moiety in the PEGylated liposomes that displayed higher internalization rate in HCT116 cells when compared with non-targeted liposomes, which seems to internalize via active binding of Cetuximab to cells. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed formulation open new avenues in the design of innovative transition metal-based vectorization systems that may be further extended to other novel metal complexes towards the improvement of their anti-cancer efficacy, which is usually hampered by solubility issues and/or toxicity to healthy tissues.

Tributyltin, an organotin, is ubiquitous in estuaries and freshwater systems. Previous reports suggest that tributyltin is an endocrine disruptor in many wildlife species and it inhibits aromatase in mammalian placental and granulosa-like tumor cell lines. However, no evidence showing the effects of tributyltin on oocytes or preimplantation embryonic developmental competence exists. Therefore, we investigated the role of tributyltin chloride (TBTCl) in the development of female oocytes and preimplantation embryos. Briefly, female ICR mice were gavaged with 0 (vehicle), 4, and 8 mg/kg of TBTCl each day for 18 days. The fluorescence intensity analysis showed that the 5-methylcytosine level decreased after TBTCl treatment, indicating that the general DNA methylation level decreased in the treated oocytes. Our results demonstrate that TBTCl treatment results in decreased mRNA levels of imprinted genes H19, Igf2r, and Peg3 during oocyte growth. The TBTCl-treated oocytes showed a significant increase in reactive oxygen species levels in germinal vesicle oocytes. In TBTCl-treated oocytes, there was no difference in GPx and Sod1 expression, but a decreased mRNA level of Cat occurred when compared with control. Moreover, the blastocysts with TBTCl exposure displayed higher apoptotic signals. These results suggest that TBTCl induces developmental defects in oocytes and preimplantation embryos.

Organotin compounds (OTC), tri-, di- and monobutyl tin, were determined in the tissues of marbled electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) in the Adriatic Sea. Marbled electric ray specimens were provided by local fishermen from three localities in the northern Adriatic: area close to the shipyard in Seca, the natural protected area Strunjan Nature Reserve and along the west Istrian coast. To assess the concentration of OTC in the environment, sediment samples were also analysed. After an adequate extraction of OTC from both matrices, their concentrations were determined by GC-ICP-MS. The results indicate that the accumulation of TBT (tributyltin) and DBT (dibutyltin) in the marbled electric ray is related to the possible pollution sources, since their total concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in the area close to the shipyard (up to 69 µg Sn kg-1, w.w.) in comparison to the other two areas less affected by direct pollution (up to 7 µg Sn kg-1, w.w.). TBT concentrations ranged from 2 to 42 µg Sn kg-1, w.w., DBT concentrations were in the range from 2 to 22 µg Sn kg-1, w.w., and MBT concentrations were mostly below the detection limit with the highest up to 4 µg Sn kg-1, w.w. The proportion of the three determined congener concentrations in sediment samples indicate a temporally older pollution with these compounds, with prevailing DBT and MBT concentrations up to 30 µg Sn kg-1, w.w., and much lower TBT concentrations up to 7 µg Sn kg-1, w.w. According to our results, marbled electric ray could be considered as an ideal bioindicator of environmental pollution due to its ecological characteristics.

STUDY QUESTION: Is the placental burden of organotin compounds (OTCs) associated with congenital cryptorchidism in infant offspring from Finland and Denmark? SUMMARY ANSWER: Increasing concentrations of OTCs had a negative association with cryptorchidism in Finland, whereas a positive association was found in Denmark. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The rapid increase in the prevalence of cryptorchidism suggests that environmental factors, such as endocrine disruptors, may be involved. OTCs are endocrine disruptors at very low concentrations due to activation of the retinoid X receptor (RXR). STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Between the years 1997 and 2001, placentas from mothers of cryptorchid boys and from healthy controls were collected from Denmark (39 cases, 129 controls) and Finland (56 cases, 56 controls). In Denmark 33 and 6 boys, and in Finland 22 and 34 boys had mild or severe cryptorchidism, respectively. The association between concentrations of four OTCs [monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT), tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPhT)] and case-control status was estimated. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: In both countries, placenta samples were selected from larger cohorts. In Finland placenta samples were collected from boys with cryptorchidism at birth and matched controls (nested case-control design). Matching criteria were parity, maternal smoking (yes/no), diabetes (yes/no), gestational age (±7 days) and date of birth (±14 days). Numbers of controls per case was 1. In Denmark, all available placentas from cryptorchid boys were chosen and control placentas were selected randomly from the total Danish cohort (case-cohort design). The average number of controls per case was 3.3. OTCs in placenta samples were analysed with liquid extraction, ethylation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry determination and coded by country-specific tertiles. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Generally, the concentrations of OTCs were very low. For most analytes, a large proportion of samples (29-96% depending on the country and case-control status) had OTC concentrations below the limit of quantification (LOQ). As an exception, the concentration of TBT was >LOQ in 99% of Finnish placentas. The mean concentrations of DBT and TBT were 1.5 and 7 times higher in Finland than in Denmark, respectively. The biomagnification of tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), monobutyltin (MBT), and total butyltins (ΣBT) was analyzed in the Northern Adriatic food-web (Mediterranean) considering trophodynamic interactions among species and carbon sources in the food-web. Although it is acknowledged that these contaminants bioaccumulate in marine organisms, it is still controversial whether they biomagnify along food-webs. A wide range of species was considered, from plankton feeders to top predators, whose trophic level (TL) was assessed measuring the biological enrichment of nitrogen stable isotopes (δ(15)N). Carbon isotopic signature (δ(13)C) was used to trace carbon sources in the food-web (terrestrial vs marine). At least one butyltin species was detected in the majority of samples, and TBT was the predominant contaminant. A significant positive relationship was found between TL and butyltin concentrations, implying food-web biomagnification. Coherently, the Trophic Magnification Factor resulted higher than 1, ranging between 3.88 for ΣBT and 4.62 for DBT. A negative but not significant correlation was instead found between δ(13)C and butyltin concentrations, indicating a slight decreasing gradient of contaminants concentrations in species according to the coastal influence as carbon source in their diet. However, trophodynamic mechanisms are likely more important factors in determining butyltin distribution in the Northern Adriatic food-web.

In this study, we measured the accumulation of tributyltin (TBT) in wharf roach (Ligia exotica Roux) and examined the species' ability to be used for TBT biomonitoring in coastal environments. In an exposure test, wharf roach were exposed to TBT via diet for 2d. TBT was accumulated in wharf roach, and its metabolite dibutyltin was detected. The concentrations of these compounds gradually decreased during the depuration period, but they were still detected 12d after exposure ceased (TBT 290±140ng/g; dibutyltin 1280±430ng/g). The biological half-life of TBT in wharf roach was estimated to be about 4d. In a field study conducted in 2011-2012, wharf roach were collected from 15 coastal sites in Japan and 3 sites in Manado, Indonesia. TBT was detected in both Japanese and Indonesian samples. The highest concentration of TBT was found in wharf roach collected at Bitung ferry port, Manado (57.9±16.5ng/g), which is close to a shipyard, and the highest concentration at a Japanese site was 12.3±6.2ng/g. Thus, we were able to detect organotins in the coastal environments by testing wharf roach, suggesting that L. exotica might serve as a good bioindicator for monitoring organotin pollution.

The aim of the present study on organotin compounds, which are toxic to biological systems, was to determine the relationship between the compounds' toxicity and their location in the lipid bilayer of the biological membrane. It was assumed that the degree of disturbance caused within the lipid bilayer of the membrane, which in turn depends on the depth of incorporation, was an appropriate measure of toxicity. Previous results from our studies on the effect of organotin chlorides on membranes, made by using infrared radiation and hemolysis of erythrocytes, indicated that tributyltin (TBT) is the most active in terms of its interaction with the erythrocyte membrane. This compound causes the most severe hemolysis of erythrocytes and dehydration of membrane constituents. In order to connect the changes induced within the membrane structure with the compounds' location, we have investigated erythrocyte shape changes using both microscopic and fluorimetric methods. The microscopic results show that organotin compounds accumulate in the outer monolayer of the membrane. The fluorimetric studies indicate that all the compounds are present in the hydrophilic part of the outer lipid monolayer, and change the order parameter of the layer. However, only tributyltin, by being incorporated into the hydrophobic region of the monolayer, changes the fluidity in the alkyl chain region of the erythrocyte membrane. Furthermore, only TBT is present in both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions, as evidenced by the changed order parameter of the polar groups and fluorescence anisotropy of DPH probe in the hydrophobic region, these being connected with its high toxicity.

The specific aims of this study were to evaluate the inhibition effect on CYP3A of di-n-butyl-di-(4-chlorobenzohydroxamato)tin (IV) (DBDCT), a tin-based complex with high antitumor activity, and the probable mechanism(s) of this action. Adult male SD rats were treated separately with natural saline (NS), lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 5 mg/kg), DBDCT (1.25, 2.5 and 5.0 mg/kg) intraperitoneally for 2 days after induction of CYP3A with dexamethasone (DEX, 100 mg/kg) for 4 days. Western blot analysis and fluorescent quantitation PCR (FQ-PCR) were conducted to determine the changes in expression of CYP3A, PXR, CAR and RXR. The biological accumulation of DBDCT and total Sn were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). CYP450 content and CYP3A activities were significantly inhibited (p < 0.05) in DBDCT-treated rats compared with the control group, as was the expression of CYP3A (p < 0.05) at both protein and mRNA levels. In DBDCT-treated groups, the expression of PXR protein and mRNA increased, while the expression of CAR decreased. The biological accumulation of DBDCT and Sn in rat livers treated with DBDCT was high. The accumulation of DBDCT and Sn due to the inhibition of CYP3A may be involved in the mechanism of toxicity of DBDCT in rat liver.

Biomonitoring of contaminants (metals, organotins, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), PCBs) was undertaken in Milford Haven Waterway (MHW) and a reference site in the Tywi Estuary (St Ishmael/Ferryside) during 2007-2008. Bioindicator species encompassed various uptake routes-Fucus vesiculosus (dissolved contaminants); Littorina littorea (grazer); Mytilus edulis and Cerastoderma edule (suspension feeders); and Hediste (=Nereis) diversicolor (sediments). Differences in feeding and habitat preference have subtle implications for bioaccumulation trends though, with few exceptions, contaminant burdens in MHW were higher than the Tywi reference site, reflecting inputs. Elevated metal concentrations were observed at some MHW sites, whilst As and Se (molluscs and seaweed) were consistently at the higher end of the UK range. However, for most metals, distributions in MH biota were not exceptional. Several metal-species combinations indicated increases in bioavailability upstream, which may reflect the influence of geogenic/land-based sources-perhaps enhanced by lower salinity. TBT levels in MH mussels were below OSPAR toxicity thresholds and in the Tywi were close to zero. Phenyltins were not accumulated appreciably in M. edulis, whereas some H. diversicolor populations appear subjected to localized (historical) sources. PAHs in H. diversicolor were distributed evenly across most of MHW, although acenaphthene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene and chrysene were highest at one site near the mouth; naphthalenes in H. diversicolor were enriched in the mid-upper Haven (a pattern seen in M. edulis for most PAHs). Whilst PAH (and PCB) concentrations in MH mussels were mostly above reference and OSPAR backgrounds, they are unlikely to exceed ecotoxicological thresholds. Bivalve Condition indices (CI) were highest at the Tywi reference site and at the seaward end of MH, decreasing upstream-giving rise to several significant (negative) relationships between CI and body burdens. Despite the possible influence of salinity gradient as a complicating factor, multivariate analysis indicated that a combination of contaminants could influence the pattern in condition (and the biomarkers metallothionein and TOSC). Integrating bioaccumulation data with biological and biochemical endpoints is seen as a useful way to discriminate environmental quality of moderately contaminated areas such as MHW and to prioritise cause and effect investigations.

Organotin compounds (OTs) were used in antifouling paints for more than four decades. However, due to their widespread intensive use and high toxicity, undesirable effects in non-target marine organisms have been detected since the early 1980s. Consequently, the International Maritime Organization banned new maritime applications of these products on January 1, 2003 and their presence on ship hulls from January 1, 2008. Although extensively studied in Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia, environmental levels and effects of organotin contamination are still poorly known for South America. Thus, the current review aimed to present the actual status of this problem in South America by summarizing and comparing the available data in the literature. An overview of the OTs concentrations in sediment and biota and their effects, mainly imposex in marine gastropods, are presented. This work showed that in Atlantic coastal areas of South America there are "hot spots" of OTs contamination, similar to that observed in industrialized countries of Northern Hemisphere. On the other hand, the number of accomplished studies in the Pacific coast is extremely low. Despite the limitation on studies about OTs environmental levels and their related effects, the available data pointed out for a widespread TBT contamination along the South American coastal areas. Therefore, the establishment of baselines of organotin contamination in the Pacific coast and the implementation of temporal trend studies in the South American coastal areas is crucial to verify the effectiveness of local regulations and OTs global ban, and to map the most sensitive areas related to present and future antifouling impacts.

Levels of tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products, mono (MBT) and dibutyltin (DBT), were monitored in fish commonly consumed in Iran. Samples were purchased from fish markets at seasonal intervals in 2010 along the North coast of Iran. Concentration of MBT, DBT and TBT in the muscle of these fish were in the range of n.d. -1.01 ± 0.84, n.d. -0.33 ± 0.26 and n.d. -4.31 ± 0.95 ngg(-1) (wet weight), respectively. Residue levels of butyltins were found lower than the tolerable average residue level of 100 ngg(-1) (wet weight).

Triphenyltin (TPT) is a representative organotin often used in marine antifouling coatings, herbicides, and pesticides. However, leaching of TPT into water may be toxic to aquatic life. In this study, environmental concentrations of TPT were used to explore reproductive toxicity of TPT to Brachionus plicatilis, a representative marine rotifer. Toxicity was examined at individual, biochemical, and molecular levels and via phenotypic traits. Rotifers exposed to 10 ng/L TPT group showed increased population size, improved reproductive rate, and a higher weekly growth rate. At 100 ng/L TPT group, the greatest degree of oxidative damage was seen. Exposure to 200 ng/L TPT group shorten generation time, delayed reproduction, and obscured the reproductive peak. Expression of the Vasa gene associated with reproduction was increased after exposure to 10 and 200 ng/L TPT group and decreased at 100 ng/L TPT group. High concentrations of TPT reduced rotifer body length and width and slowed swimming speed. Findings provide a better understanding of the adverse effects of changing TPT concentrations on marine rotifer, by the life cycle parameters, oxidative stress defense mechanisms, expression of a gene related to reproduction, and phenotypic traits. This paper firstly analyzed the reproductive toxicity of environmental levels of organotin compounds to zooplankton, which provided new data support for the comprehensive evaluation of its marine ecological toxicity.

Triphenyltin (TPT) has attracted considerable attention owing to its vitality, bioaccumulation, and lurking damage. TPT widely exists in complex salinity areas such as estuaries and coastal regions. However, there are few studies on the toxicological behavior of TPT under different salinity. In the study, juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were utilized as model animals to investigate the effects of environmental relevant TPT exposure on the osmoregulation and energy metabolism in gill under different salinity. The results showed that salinity and TPT single or combined exposure affected the morphology of the gill tissue. After TPT exposure, Na+-K+-ATPase (NKA) activity significantly decreased at 0 ppt, while NKA and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase (CMA) activities significantly increased at 15 ppt. In addition, significantly higher succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were found in the control fish compared to the TPT-exposed ones at 15 ppt. Quantitative real-time PCR results showed that TPT exposure affected the expression of osmoregulation and energy metabolism-related genes under different salinity. Overall, TPT exposure interfered with osmoregulation and energy metabolism under different salinity. The study will provide reference data for assessing the toxicity of organotin compounds in complex-salinity areas.

Dibutyltin dichloride (DBTCl) is a widespread environmental pollutant that is frequently employed as a light and heat sustainer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics and is a teratogen in vivo. Nevertheless, its destructiveness in mammalian oocytes remains unclear. This study highlighted the consequences of DBTCl vulnerability on mouse oocyte. Our results revealed that exposure to 5.0 mg/kg/day of DBTCl for ten days reduced the number of mature follicles and oocytes in the ovaries and inhibited the meiotic maturation of oocytes. Single-cell transcriptomic analysis indicated that DBTCl exposure interfered with the expression of more than 400 genes in oocytes, including those involved in multiple biological pathways. Specifically, DBTCl exposure impaired spindle assembly and chromosome alignment. In addition, DBTCl exposure caused mitochondrial dysfunction, which led to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induced apoptosis. In summary, our study illustrates that mitochondrial dysfunction and redox perturbation are the major causes of the reduced quality of oocytes exposed to DBTCl.

Triphenyltin (TPT) is an endocrine contaminant that is often detected in the environment. However, the mechanism of the effects of TPT on biological systems is not fully understood. Here we exposed marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) to TPT for 21 days. Brain transcriptome, intestinal content metabolism group, and behavior analysis were carried out. Through the comprehensive analysis of multiomics for the in-depth understanding of the ways related to health improvement, we determined that the glycine-serine-threonine metabolic axis was most perturbed by TPT. Through behavioral analysis, it was found that there was behavioral hyperactivity in the exposed group; behavioral hyperactivity may be caused by the interference of TPT with the neuroendocrine system. In order to gain a full understanding of the impacts of TPT on human health, transcriptomic screening of differential genes and an impartial attitude based on bioinformatics were used. Gene-disease interaction analysis using the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) revealed the possible effects of TPT on human health. Finally, based on these findings, the relevant adverse outcome pathway (AOP), which is the "epigenetic modification of PPARG leading to adipogenesis," was identified from AOP Wiki. Further research is required to validate the potential AOP of TPT.

Dibutyltin(IV) complexes of composition Bu2Sn(LH)2, where LH is a carboxylate residue derived from 2-[(E)-(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl]benzoate (L¹H) with water molecule (1), 4-[(E)-(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl]benzoate (L²H) (2) and 4-[(E)-(4-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)diazenyl]benzoate (L³H) (3), were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic (¹H, ¹³C and ¹¹9Sn NMR, IR, ¹¹9Sn Mössbauer) techniques. A full characterization was accomplished from the crystal structure of complex 1. The molecular structures and geometries of the complexes (1a i.e. 1 without water molecule and 3) were fully optimized using the quantum mechanical method (PM6). Complexes 1 and 3 were found to exhibit stronger cytotoxic activity in vitro across a panel of human tumor cell lines viz., A498, EVSA-T, H226, IGROV, M19 MEL, MCF-7 and WIDR. Compound 3 is found to be four times superior for the A498, EVSA-T and MCF-7 cell lines than CCDP (cisplatin), and four, eight and sixteen times superior for the A498, H226 and MCF-7 cell lines, respectively, compared to ETO (etoposide). The mechanistic role of cytotoxic activity of test compounds is discussed in relation to the theoretical results of docking studies with some key enzymes such as ribonucleotide reductase, thymidylate synthase, thymidylate phosphorylase and topoisomerase II associated with the propagation of cancer.

Triphenyltin (TPhT) is a biocide used worldwide in agriculture, especially in rice crop farming. The distribution and dissipation of TPhT in rice fields, as well as uptake of TPhT and other phenyltin compounds (monophenyltin, MPhT, and diphenyltin, DPhT) is still unknown at present. In this study, speciation analysis of phenyltin compounds was carried out in soil and water from a rice field where TPhT was applied during rice seeding according to legal application rates in Brazil. The results indicate the degradation of biocide and distribution of tin species into soil and water. To evaluate whether TPhT is taken up by plants, rice plants were exposed to three different TPhT application rates in a controlled mesocosm during 7 weeks. After this period, tin speciation was determined in soil, roots, leaves, and grains of rice. Degradation of TPhT was observed in soil, where DPhT and MPhT were detected. MPhT, DPhT, and TPhT were also detected in the roots of plants exposed to all TPhT application rates. Only TPhT was detected in leaves and at relatively low concentration, suggesting selective transport of TPhT in the xylem, in contrast to DPhT and MPhT. Concentration of phenyltin species in rice grains was lower than the limit of detection, suggesting that rice plants do not have the capability to take up TPhT from soil and transport it to the grains.
