INTRODUCTION: Secondary metabolites in plants play a crucial role in defense mechanisms against insects, pests, and pathogens. These metabolites exhibit varying distributions within and among plant parts under different biotic and abiotic conditions. Understanding the intricate relationships between secondary metabolites and insect populations can be helpful for elucidating plant defense mechanisms and enhancing agricultural managing efficiencies. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of the glucosinolate profile in the leaves of three cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) varieties on insect loads. METHODS: Glucosinolate profiles across different leaf positions (such as bottom, middle, and center) and leaf shapes (such as curly and non-curly leaf) of three cabbage varieties (Xiagan [XGA], Xiaguang [XGU], and Qiangxia [QIX]) were analyzed by using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The insect loads were recorded by visually inspecting the upper and lower layers of each target leaf. RESULTS: Increasing concentrations of four glucosinolates, namely, glucoiberin, progoitrin, glucoraphanin, and glucobrassicin, were positively related to insect loads. While increasing concentrations of the other four glucosinolates, such as neoglucobrassicin, 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, sinigrin, and gluconapin, were negatively related to insect loads. Furthermore, both glucosinolate synthesis and insect loads were significantly higher in the curly-shaped and middle-position leaves than in the non-curly-shaped and bottom- and central-position leaves across the cabbage varieties. CONCLUSION: Differences in glucosinolate profiles across leaf positions and shapes strongly influenced the insect loads of the three Brassica varieties. This link may further extend our understanding of the real defense power of a particular variety against herbivore damage.

Phenolamides are abundant specialized metabolites found in nature and consist of hydroxycinnamic acids mono- or polyconjugated with polyamines. Their participation in flower development is well-documented, and their presence in pollen raises the question of their role in pollen/pollinator interactions. The structural characterization of phenolamides is complicated by the presence of positional isomers and stereoisomers. Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry in the positive ionization mode is becoming very popular in phenolamide structural characterization. However, collision-induced transamidation processes that cause the swapping of side chains have been detected, making it difficult to distinguish regioisomers with this technique. In the present report, we explore the dissociation processes undergone by the [M - H]- ions of spermidine-based phenolamides as model compounds. We describe two original competitive dissociation routes, namely, the phenolate and imidate pathways, to account for the observed fragmentation reactions undergone by collisional activated standard phenolamide anions. Whereas the phenolate pathway is regioselective at the central position for spermidine, the imidate pathway, requiring a deprotonated amide, only occurs at the extremities. Tandem mass spectrometry experiments on negatively charged phenolamide ions may then outperform their positive ionization mode counterparts for the distinction between phenolamide regioisomers and globally for the identification of phenolamides in natural extracts.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: of our study was the analysis of the blood hypercoagulation risk in patients with ischemic atherotrombotic stroke depending of the VDR gene polymorphisms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and Methods: Blood of 170 patients with ischemic atherothrombotic stroke (IATS) and 124 healthy individuals (control group) was used for genotyping. Four polymorphisms (FokI, BsmI, ApaI, TaqI) of gene VDR were examined with PCR-RFLP methodology. Statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS-17.0 program. RESULTS: Results: Among patients with IATS who are carriers of the f/f genotype, FokI polymorphism of VDR gene by high thrombin time and a decrease in the rate of spontaneous fibrinolysis was registered. In individuals with the B/B genotype homozygous for the polymorphic variant, BsmI had significantly lower mean values of prothrombin and thrombin time and increased the rate of spontaneous fibrinolysis. The homozygotes for the A-allele ApaI polymorphism have 2.7 times higher risk of developing blood hypercoagulation than homozygotes for the a-allele was found. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: Biochemical signs of hypercoagulation syndrome among patients with IATS who are carriers of the f/f genotype of the FokI polymorphic variant and among B/B homozygotes of the BsmI polymorphic variant and homozygotes for the A-allele of the AрaI polymorphism of the VDR gene were registered.

Ph3P-I2-mediated condensation reactions of isatoic anhydrides and o-phenylenediamines have been developed for the regioselective syntheses of a wide range of linearly and angularly fused benzoimidazoquinazolinones. The selectivity of the products relies on the generation of either highly electrophilic oxyphosphonium or less reactive imidate intermediates. A direct amine attack at the C-2 position of the oxyphosphonium intermediate presumably drives the reaction toward the linearly fused products, whereas an attack of the diamine at the C-4 position of the in situ generated cyclic imidate leads to the angularly fused derivatives. This strategy serves as a practical handle for the efficient synthesis of other related heterocycles.

RESUMO

A base-mediated (3 + 2) cycloaddition of trifluoroacetohydrazonoyl chlorides with imidates for the construction of 3-trifluoromethyl-1,2,4-triazoles has been described. This reaction is characterized by readily starting materials, simple reaction conditions, good yields, a broad substrate scope, and excellent regioselectivity. The utility of this protocol has been validated by the synthesis of a drug-like molecule.

Arylene diimide compounds exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), but its mechanism remains elusive. Herein we studied the TADF mechanism of a carbazole-substituted pyromellitic diimide derivative (CzPhPmDI) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film by using DFT, TD-DFT, and MS-CASPT2 methods within the QM/MM framework. We found that the TADF mechanism involves three electronic states (i.e., S0, S1, and T1), but the T2 state is not involved because its energy is higher than the S1 state by 6.9 kcal/mol. By contrast, the T1 state is only 3.2 kcal/mol lower than the S1 state and such small energy difference benefits the reverse intersystem crossing (rISC) process from T1 to S1 thereto TADF. This point is seconded by relevant radiative and nonradiative rates calculated. At room temperature, the ISC rate from S1 to T1 is calculated to be 6.1 × 106 s-1, which is larger than the fluorescence emission rate, 2.2 × 105 s-1; thus, the dominant S1 population converts to the T1 state. However, in the T1 state, the rISC process (1.8 × 104 s-1) becomes the most important channel because of the negligible phosphorescence emission rate (3.5 × 10-2 s-1). So, the T1 population is still converted back to the S1 state to fluoresce enabling TADF. Unfortunately, the rISC process is blocked in low temperature. Besides, we found that relevant Huang-Rhys factors have dominant contribution from low-frequency vibrational motion related to the torsional motion of functional groups. These gained insights could provide useful information for the design of organic TADF materials with excellent luminescence efficiency.

The catalytic allylic substitution is one of the most important tools in asymmetric synthesis to form C-C bonds in an enantioselective way. While high efficiency was previously accomplished in terms of enantio- and regiocontrol using different catalyst types, a strong general limitation is a very pronounced preference for the formation of allylic substitution products with (E)-configured C=C double bonds. Herein, we report that with a planar chiral palladacycle catalyst a diastereospecific reaction outcome is achieved using isoxazolinones and allylic imidates as substrates, thus maintaining the C=C double bond geometry of the allylic substrates in the highly enantioenriched products. DFT calculations show that the reactions proceed via an SN 2 mechanism and not via π-allyl Pd complexes. Crucial for the high control is the stabilization of the allylic fragment in the SN 2 transition state by π-interactions with the phenyl substituents of the pentaphenylferrocenyl catalyst core.

RESUMO

A regioselective synthesis of furanone-fused isoquinoline heterocycles is developed in a single step using a Rh(III) catalyst. In this reaction, a cascade C-H activation, regioselective annulation, and lactonization occur in one pot. A wide range of alkynoates was examined, which showed good regioselectivity. The regioselectivity was guided by steric bulk at the C4 position of the 4-hydroxy-2-alkynoates. The synthetic utility was exemplified, and the model reaction was scaled up to a 1 g scale.

Red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) continues to receive increasing attention on its health-promoting properties because of its high glucosinolate content. Glucosinolates are an unstable active substance; however, there are few studies on their changes in different cooking processes. In this study, we investigated the effects of processing methods (boiling, steaming, microwave heating, frying, stir-frying) and boiling time on glucosinolates in red cabbage. Ten glucosinolates, including 4-methoxyglucobrassicin, neoglucobrassicin, glucoalyssin, glucobrassicin, glucoraphanin, glucoiberin, progoitrin, gluconapin and sinigrin, in red cabbage were detected. Decreases of 32.36%, 24.83%, 25.27%, 81.11% and 84.29% for total glucosinolates were observed after boiling, microwaving, steaming, frying and stir-frying. Indole glucosinolates were more efficiently lost compared to aliphatic glucosinolates after boiling, while microwaving, steaming, frying and stir-frying also resulted in a greater reduction in indole glucosinolates than aliphatic glucosinolates. Glucoalyssin, glucoerucin and sinigrin were more thermal sensitive than other glucosinolates. It was confirmed that microwaving and steaming retained higher levels of glucosinolates than other methods and may be better for cooking red cabbage.

Broccoli microgreens have shown potential health benefits due to their high glucosinolate (GL) levels. Previously, we observed that postharvest UVB treatment did not have much effect on increasing GLs in broccoli microgreens. In this study, we investigated the influence of preharvest UVB irradiation on GL levels in broccoli microgreens. UHPLC-ESI/ITMS analysis showed that preharvest UVB treatments with UVB 0.09 and 0.27 Wh/m2 significantly increased the glucoraphanin (GLR), glucoerucin (GLE), and total aliphatic GL levels by 13.7 and 16.9%, respectively, in broccoli microgreens when measured on harvest day. The nutritional qualities of UVB-treated microgreens were stable during 21-day storage, with only small changes in their GL levels. Broccoli microgreens treated before harvest with UVB 0.27 Wh/m2 and 10 mM CaCl2 spray maintained their overall quality, and had the lowest tissue electrolyte leakage and off-odor values during the storage. Furthermore, preharvest UVB 0.27 Wh/m2 treatment significantly increased GL biosynthesis genes when evaluated before harvest, and reduced the expression level of myrosinase, a gene responsible for GL breakdown during postharvest storage. Overall, preharvest UVB treatment, together with calcium chloride spray, can increase and maintain health-beneficial compound levels such as GLs and prolong the postharvest quality of broccoli microgreens.

KEY MESSAGE: Thus study found the temporal and spatial relationship between production of aliphatic glucosinolate compounds and the expression profile of glucosinolate-related genes during growth and development in radish, Chinese cabbage, and their intergeneric hybrid baemoochae plants. Glucosinolates (GSLs) are one of major bioactive compounds in Brassicaceae plants. GSLs play a role in defense against microbes as well as chemo-preventative activity against cancer, which draw attentions from plant scientists. We investigated the temporal relationship between production of aliphatic Glucosinolate (GSLs) compounds and the expression profile of GSL related genes during growth and development in radish, Chinese cabbage, and their intergeneric hybrid, baemoochae. Over the complete life cycle, Glucoraphasatin (GRH) and glucoraphanin (GRE) predominated in radish, whereas gluconapin (GNP), glucobrassicanapin (GBN), and glucoraphanin (GRA) abounded in Chinese cabbage. Baemoochae contained intermediate levels of all GSLs studied, indicating inheritance from both radish and Chinese cabbage. Expression patterns of BCAT4, CYP79F1, CYP83A1, UGT74B1, GRS1, FMOgs-ox1, and AOP2 genes showed a correlation to their corresponding encoded proteins in radish, Chinese cabbage, and baemoochae. Interestingly, there is a sharp change in gene expression pattern involved in side chain modification, particularly GRS1, FMOgs-ox1, and AOP2, among these plants during the vegetative and reproductive stage. For instance, the GRS1 was strongly expressed during leaf development, while both of FMOgs-ox1 and AOP2 was manifested high in floral tissues. Furthermore, expression of GRS1 gene which is responsible for GRH production was predominantly expressed in leaf tissues of radish and baemoochae, whereas it was only slightly detected in Chinese cabbage root tissue, explaining why radish has an abundance of GRH compared to other Brassica plants. Altogether, our comprehensive and comparative data proved that aliphatic GSLs biosynthesis is dynamically and precisely regulated in a tissue- and development-dependent manner in Brassicaceae family members.

Glucosinolates (GLs) are of great interest for their potential as antioxidant and anticancer compounds. In this study, macroporous crosslinked copolymer adsorbents of poly (glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) and its amine (ethylenediamine, diethylamine, triethylamine)-modified derivatives were prepared and used to purify the GLS glucoerucin in a crude extract obtained from a cruciferous plant. These four adsorbents were evaluated by comparing their adsorption/desorption and decolorization performance for the purification of glucoerucin from crude plant extracts. According to the results, the strongly basic triethylamine modified PGMA (PGMA-III) adsorbent showed the best adsorption and desorption capacity of glucoerucin, and its adsorption data was a good fit to the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetics; the PGMA adsorbent gave the optimum decolorization performance. Furthermore, dynamic adsorption/desorption experiments were carried out to optimize the purification process. Two glass columns were serially connected and respectively wet-packed with PGMA and PGMA-III adsorbents so that glucoerucin could be decolorized and isolated from crude extracts in one process. Compared with KCl solution, aqueous ammonia was a preferable desorption solvent for the purification of glucoerucin and overcame the challenges of desalination efficiency, residual methanol and high operation costs. The results showed that after desorption with 10% aqueous ammonia, the purity of isolated glucoerucin was 74.39% with a recovery of 80.63%; after decolorization with PGMA adsorbent, the appearance of glucoerucin was improved and the purity increased by 11.30%. The process of using serially connected glass columns, wet-packed with PGMA and PGMA-III, may provide a simple, low-cost, and efficient method for the purification of GLs from cruciferous plants.

BACKGROUND: Cruciferous foods rich in health-promoting metabolites are of particular interest to consumers as well as being a good source of bioactives-enriched ingredients. Several elicitors have been used to stimulate the biosynthesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites in foods; however, little is known about the response of new hybrid varieties, such as Bimi®, under field-crop production conditions. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid (200 µmol L-1 , SA), methyl jasmonate (100 µmol L-1 , MeJA), and their combination on Bimi plant organs (inflorescences and aerial vegetative tissues - stems and leaves). For this, the composition of the glucosinolates present in the tissues was evaluated. Also, aqueous extracts of the plant material, obtained with different times of extraction with boiling water, were studied. RESULTS: The results indicate that the combined treatment (SA + MeJA) significantly increased the content of glucosinolates in the inflorescences and that MeJA was the most effective elicitor in leaves. Regarding the aqueous extracts, the greatest amount of glucosinolates was extracted at 30 min - except for the leaves elicited with MeJA, for which 15 min was optimal. CONCLUSION: The elicitation in the field enriched leaves in glucobrassicin (GB), 4-methoxyglucobrassicin (MGB), and neoglucobrassicin (NGB) and stems and inflorescences in glucoraphanin, 4-hydroxyglucobrassicin, GB, MGB, and NGB. In this way, this enhanced vegetable material favored the presence of bioactives in the extracts, which is of great interest regarding enriched foods and ingredients with added value obtained from them. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

KEY MESSAGE: Overexpression of BoMYB29 gene up-regulates the aliphatic glucosinolate pathway in Brassica oleracea plants increasing the production of the anti-cancer metabolite glucoraphanin, and the toxic and pungent sinigrin. Isothiocyanates, the bio-active hydrolysis products of glucosinolates, naturally produced by several Brassicaceae species, play an important role in human health and agriculture. This study aims at correlating the content of aliphatic glucosinolates to the expression of genes involved in their synthesis in Brassica oleracea, and perform functional analysis of BoMYB29 gene. To this purpose, three genotypes were used: a sprouting broccoli, a cabbage, and a wild genotype (Winspit), a high glucosinolate containing accession. Winspit showed the highest transcript level of BoMYB28, BoMYB29 and BoAOP2 genes, and BoAOP2 expression was positively correlated with that of the two MYB genes. Further analyses of the aliphatic glucosinolates also showed a positive correlation between the expression of BoAOP2 and the production of sinigrin and gluconapin in Winspit. The Winspit BoMYB29 CDS was cloned and overexpressed in Winspit and in the DH AG1012 line. Overexpressing Winspit plants produced higher quantities of alkenyl glucosinolates, such as sinigrin. Conversely, the DH AG1012 transformants showed a higher production of methylsulphinylalkyl glucosinolates, including glucoraphanin, and, despite an up-regulation of the aliphatic glucosinolate genes, no increase in alkenyl glucosinolates. The latter may be explained by the absence of a functional AOP2 gene in DH AG1012. Nevertheless, an extract of DH AG1012 lines overexpressing BoMYB29 provided a chemoprotective effect on human colon cells. This work exemplifies how the genetic diversity of B. oleracea may be used by breeders to select for higher expression of transcription factors for glucosinolate biosynthesis to improve its natural, health-promoting properties.

We evaluated the diagnostic performance of a simple and label-free pathogen enrichment method using homobifunctional imidoesters (HI) and a microfluidic system, called the SLIM assay, followed by real-time PCR from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-uninfected patients with suspected tuberculous meningitis (TBM). Patients with suspected TBM were prospectively enrolled in a tertiary hospital in an intermediate tuberculosis (TB)-burden country during a 30-month period. TBM was classified according to the uniform case definition. Definite and probable TBM were regarded as the reference standards for TBM, and possible TBM and not-TBM as the reference standards for not-TBM. Of 72 HIV-uninfected patients with suspected TBM, 10 were diagnosed with definite (n = 2) and probable (n = 8) TBM by the uniform case definition. The sensitivity of the SLIM assay was 100% (95% confidence interval [CI], 69 to 100%) compared with definite or probable TBM, and it was superior to those of mycobacterial culture (20% [95% CI, 3 to 56%]) and the Xpert MTB/RIF assay (0% [95% CI, 0 to 31%]). Of 21 possible TBM and 41 not-TBM patients by the uniform case definition, 5 possible TBM and no not-TBM patients gave positive results in the SLIM assay. The specificity of the SLIM assay was 92% (95% CI, 82 to 97%; 5/62). We demonstrated that the SLIM assay had a very high sensitivity and specificity with small samples of 10 cases of definite or probable TBM. Further studies are needed to confirm this finding and to compare the SLIM assay with mycobacterial culture, Xpert MTB/RIF, and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra assays in a larger prospective cohort of patients with suspected TBM, including both HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected cases.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common disease in Western nations and ranges in severity from steatosis to steatohepatitis (NASH). NAFLD is a genetic-environmental-metabolic stress-related disease of unclear pathogenesis. NAFLD is triggered by caloric overconsumption and physical inactivity, which lead to insulin resistance and oxidative stress. A growing body of evidence indicates that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Mitochondrial dysfunction not only promotes fat accumulation, but also leads to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation, resulting in oxidative stress in hepatocytes. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is an important modulator of antioxidant signaling that serves as a primary cellular defense against the cytotoxic effects of oxidative stress. The pharmacological induction of Nrf2 ameliorates obesity-associated insulin resistance and NAFLD in a mouse model. Sulforaphane and its precursor glucoraphanin are derived from broccoli sprouts and are the most potent natural Nrf2 inducers-they may protect mitochondrial function, thus suppressing the development of NASH. In this review, we briefly describe the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of NASH and the effects of glucoraphanin on its development.

: The management of pain in patients affected by diabetic neuropathy still represents an unmet therapeutic need. Recent data highlighted the pain-relieving efficacy of glucosinolates deriving from Brassicaceae. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-hyperalgesic efficacy of Eruca sativa defatted seed meal, along with its main glucosinolate, glucoerucin (GER), on diabetic neuropathic pain induced in mice by streptozotocin (STZ). The mechanism of action was also investigated. Hypersensitivity was assessed by paw pressure and cold plate tests after the acute administration of the compounds. Once bio-activated by myrosinase, both E. sativa defatted meal (1 g kg-1 p.o.) and GER (100 µmol kg-1 p.o., equimolar to meal content) showed a dose-dependent pain-relieving effect in STZ-diabetic mice, but the meal was more effective than the glucosinolate. The co-administration with H2S scavengers abolished the pain relief mediated by both E. sativa meal and GER. Their effect was also prevented by selectively blocking Kv7 potassium channels. Repeated treatments with E. sativa meal did not induce tolerance to the anti-hypersensitive effect. In conclusion, E. sativa meal can be suggested as a new nutraceutical tool for pain relief in patients with diabetic neuropathy.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) are macromolecules with several industrial applications, being particularly used in the food industry as health-promoting compounds protection agents, as flavour stabilizers, or to eliminate undesired tastes and browning reactions, among others. This study shows the effects of α- (10, 30 and 40 mmol L-1 ), ß- (3, 6 and 10 mmol L-1 ) and maltosyl-ß-CDs (30, 60 and 90 mmol L-1 ) use on the health-promoting glucoraphanin-sulforaphane system of a broccoli juice up to 24 h at 22 °C. Maltosyl-ß-CD (90 mmol L-1 ) highly retained glucoraphanin content after 24 h at 22 °C, showing better effectiveness than ß-CD (10 mmol L-1 ). Sulforaphane was efficiently encapsulated with ß-CD at just 3 mmol L-1 , and the sulforaphane formed was stable during 3 h at 22 °C. On the other hand, 40 mmol L-1 α-CD retained a high glucoraphanin content in broccoli juice. In contrast, glucoraphanin levels in juice without CDs decreased by 71% after 24 h. Consequently, CDs addition may potentially preserve glucoraphanin in this broccoli juice during industrial processing with the possibility to be later transformed by endogenous myrosinase after ingestion to the health-promoting sulforaphane. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the presence and content of selected phytochemicals, namely glucosinolates, fatty acids and phenolic compounds, in rutabaga (Brassica napus L. var. napobrassica) sprouts grown under various light conditions, in comparison to rutabaga seeds and roots. As rutabaga sprouts are likely to become new functional food, special emphasis was placed on the related risks of progoitrin and erucic acid presence - compounds with proven antinutritive properties. RESULTS: Time of sprouting significantly decreased progoitrin content, especially after 10 days (by 91.5%) and 12 days (by 97.5%), as compared to 8 days. In addition, sprouts grown under dark conditions showed 27%, 60% and 17% reduction in progoitrin level in 8, 10 and 12 days after sowing, respectively, as compared to sprouts grown under natural conditions. Progoitrin was found to be the predominant glucosinolate in rutabaga seeds (804.07 ± 60.89 mg 100 g-1 dry weight (DW)), accompanied by glucoerucin (157.82 ± 21.04 mg 100 g-1 DW), also found in the roots (82.20 ± 16.53 mg 100 g-1 DW). Among the unsaturated fatty acids in rutabaga sprouts, erucic, linoleic, linolenic and gondoic acids decreased significantly, and only oleic acid increased as germination days progressed. The amount of harmful erucic acid in rutabaga sprouts was found to vary between 1.8% and 7%, depending on the day of seeding or light conditions, as compared to 42.5% in the seeds. CONCLUSION: The evaluated rutabaga products showed a wide content range of potentially antinutritive compounds, sprouts having the lowest amounts of erucic acid and progoitrin. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Blood biochemistry, body mass, and gross pathology of male eiders (Somateria mollissima) wintering in the Inner Danish Waters of the western Baltic Sea (the Great Belt Strait) were assessed in this study. In November 2015, 14 specimens were obtained from the area defined for examination. Of the subject animals captured, 1 had dilated intestines and 2 had granulomas with encapsulated shotgun pellets considered to be chronic in nature. All 14 males were determined to have enteritis along with acanthocephalan and trematode endoparasites. Compared with reference values for captive eiders, plasma values of alanine aminotransferase (93%), total bilirubin (45%), gamma-glutamyl transferase (41%), and alkaline phosphatase (92%) showed significant increases in all 14 male birds. Altogether, the plasma biochemistry and gross pathology findings suggest that up to as many as 20% of the eider males in the Inner Danish Waters of the western Baltic Sea may suffer from liver and bile duct lesions and enteritis. The overall effect on the bird's survival from the results of this investigation is unknown. Therefore, the authors emphasize that more research is required on wintering eiders in the western Baltic to obtain a better understanding of their overall health status during winter, as well as their responses to wound-related lesions associated with gunshot pellets.
