RESUMO

In 2017, the 200th anniversary of the discovery of selenium was celebrated. In 1817, the Swedish chemists, Berzelius and Gahn, on roasting 200 kg of sulfur from a pyrite from the Falun mine, obtained about 3 g of a precipitate that they first wrongly identified as tellurium. Berzelius doubted this result and repeated the analysis some months later realizing that a new element was in his hands and he named this element Selenium (Greek: Selene, moon) in consideration of its resemblance to Tellurium (Latin: Tellus, earth). Several events were organized in the year for this special celebration and this Special Issue would like to be an additional contribution to the success of a research that, especially during the last decades, rapidly grew in different fields: synthesis, medicinal chemistry, biology, material, and environment. These studies are strongly characterized by multi- and interdisciplinary connections, and, for this reason, we collected here contributions coming from different areas and disciplines, not exclusively synthetic organic chemistry.

RESUMO

At the beginning of the 1910's period, several scientists and pharmaceutical companies are working actively on colloids, which were discovered in 1845. The pharmaceutical use of"electrical colloids" was the subject of publications and researches for a therapeutic usage, mainly in infectology and oncology. One hun- dred years later, it is under the name ofnanoparticles that the same subject comes to light-and is the source of new works for a potential use for cancer treatment. The example of selenium, which was introduced under a colloidal form in medicine in 1912, is studied here, but other metals could have given the same result: metallic nanoparticles evaluation in pharmacy is not new!

RESUMO

The recent celebration of the 50 years of the ETA closely coincided with that of the 200 years since the discovery and description of selenium, an essential trace element for normal thyroid gland function and thus an adjuvant in the treatment of thyroid diseases. The aim of this commentary is to briefly outline the half centennial of the ETA while also signaling important moments in the history of selenium, developments in its availability round the world, details of its connection with thyroid function and, finally, its current and projected modes of application.

RESUMO

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element unevenly distributed on the Earth's crust with low selenium regions predominating. To prevent selenium-deficiency diseases in livestock, additions of selenium to animal feed are required and were approved for all species, but the chemical form of the element to be added was not specified. Presently, sodium selenite is still widely employed, although it is not a natural nutritional form of selenium. Its use creates ecological problems and affects human selenium nutriture in as much as the meat, milk, and eggs from animals maintained on selenite contain less selenium than from animals receiving it as selenomethionine, the chief natural nutritional form of the element present in grain crops grown in selenium-adequate regions, or from high-selenium yeast added to feedstock. Human dietary selenium intakes are sub-optimal in many countries but are considered to be adequate if they reach the currently adopted Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs). Their upward revision will be required if the health benefits of selenium are to be fully utilized.

RESUMO

Selenium (Se) intake has decreased substantially in the UK population since 1970s. To investigate whether Se concentration in wheat grain has changed as a result of yield improvement or environmental changes, we analyzed archived wheat grain from the Broadbalk Wheat Experiment at Rothamsted, England, which has been run continuously for over 160 years. Wheat grain and soil samples were selected from plots receiving different fertilizer or manure treatments. Grain Se concentration varied from 11 to 236 ng g(-1), with a mean and median of 44 and 32 ng g(-1), respectively. Grain samples from the unfertilized control plot had significantly higher concentrations of Se than those from fertilized or manured plots; the latter received various amounts of S and also had higher grain yield. No significant trends in grain Se concentrations were detected in the fertilized or manured plots, in spite of a dramatic increase in grain yield since the introduction of modern short-straw cultivars in the mid 1960s. In the control plot, grain samples had higher Se concentrations in the periods before 1920 or after 1970 than those during 1920-1970. This temporal pattern mirrored that of SO(2) emissions and atmospheric S deposition. Soil Se concentrations showed an increasing trend in all plots over 160 years. The results show that the Se concentration of wheat grain from the Broadbalk experiment was influenced by S inputs from fertilizers and atmospheric deposition, and that improving grain yield through plant breeding has not resulted in a significant decrease in grain Se concentration in the fertilized plots.

RESUMO

Strong positive correlations between selenium (Se) and total mercury (HgT) contents in the liver of marine mammals and mercury mine workers in modern times have been documented in numerous investigations. Herein, we report a positive correlation between Se and HgT concentrations over the past 1,500 years in the seal hairs and in the lake sediments amended by seal or penguin excrements on King George Island (63 degrees 23' S, 57 degrees 00' W), West Antarctica. Because the changes in the input of Se and Hg into the marine environments of the studied sites do not seem to be synchronous, this striking correlation indicates a self-protection mechanism in Antarctic seals and penguins: Every time there is heavier Hg burden, more Se is accumulated to reduce the toxicity of Hg. This positive correlation between Hg and Se contents in the seal hairs and excrement sediments, however, becomes insignificant in the recent 50 years for unknown reasons.

RESUMO

Considerable interest exists in characterizing the extent of changes in methylmercury exposures from preindustrial to modern-day times. Hair is often preserved over centuries and has been useful in determining the extent of dietary trace metal exposures, particularly methylmercury. We examined 16 human hair samples taken from human hair bundles buried in the soil of the Karluk One Archaeological site located near the current Karluk village on the Kodiak Archipelago of Alaska. Hair samples were analyzed for total mercury, methylmercury, selenium, and cadmium. The mean total mercury level was 1.33 ppm (SD = 1.09). The mean methylmercury level, however, was considerably lower than the total mercury concentration: the mean methylmercury level was 0.03 ppm (SD = 0.02). The mean cadmium level was 0.15 ppm (SD = 0.14) and the mean selenium level was 5.22 ppm (SD = 5.73). While the concentration of total mercury in the Karluk hair samples is comparable to those observed in ancient hair from other locations, direct methylmercury quantization demonstrated that methylmercury levels were less than 2% of the total mercury in these hair samples. Because the hair was subjected to a variety of environmental influences over the centuries, the possibility of degradation of methylmercury in the hair over the last 400 to 800 years cannot be ruled out. The use of hair from remains found in more protected frozen or dry environments may provide the best evidence for the extent of preindustrial exposures to methylmercury and other trace metals.

RESUMO

In order to clarify the historic academic problem of whether or not livestock poisoning in ancient Suzhou of Northwest China, recorded by Marco Polo in 1295, was selenosis, this study deals with the biogeochemistry of selenium in Sunan County in the Hexi Corridor, which is part of ancient Suzhou in China. It was found that quite a number of farm animals had suffered from intoxication and died as a result of grazing poisonous grasses, mostly Oxytropis DC, Stellera chamaejasme, and Achnatheru inebrians. Toxic symptoms of livestock grazing on Oxytropis DC are similar to those of selenium toxicity, for instance, hair loss and hoof lesions as described by Marco Polo. Therefore, we thought that toxic grass, probably Oxytropis DC, led to the intoxication of livestock recorded by Marco Polo. Average Se concentrations in two members of this species were 0.112 +/- 0.038 mg/kg for the root of Oxytropis glabra, 0.102 +/- 0.027 mg/kg for the stem and leaf of Oxytropis glabra, and 0.066 +/- 0.009 mg/kg for Oxytropis ochrocephala. The average soil selenium concentration was 0.205 +/- 0.127 mg/kg on grassland producing Oxytropis glabra and 0.152 +/- 0.024 mg/kg on grassland producing Oxytropis ochrocephala. The average Se concentration in other plants was 0.076 mg/kg in the root of Ephedra monosperma Mey, 0.029 mg/kg in the root of Rheum palmatum, 0.031 mg/kg in the root of Stellera chamaejasme, 0.037 mg/kg in Achnatherum inebrians, and 0.067 mg/kg in forage grass (Achnatherum splendens ohwi). Selenium concentrations in soils and plants in Sunan County are far less than the thresholds causing selenium toxicity in livestock. As a result, this study concludes that the livestock poisoning recorded by Marco Polo in 1295 might not have been selenosis.

RESUMO

The search for a genuine thought in ancient times makes medical archeology part of our contemporary knowledge, not to say a patrimony to be harbored. A Roman encyclopedia is a compilation of the prevailing knowledge of scientific and medical matters at the time. In this paper an original Roman prescription for a specific cardiac complaint is analyzed for its activity and efficaciousness. Further investigation of the effect of Selenium administration is warranted.

RESUMO

This review provides a historical account of a collaboration established between a nutritionist and a virologist to investigate the interrelationship of host nutritional status and viral virulence. The parties to this collaboration consider themselves specialists in the fields of antioxidant nutrition and viral immunology, respectively. The advantages of such talent pooling are discussed (rapid startup, well-focused experimentation, ability to visualize the "big picture"), as are some of the disadvantages (limited common scientific vocabulary, proper apportioning of credit, lack of institutional infrastructure to house such efforts). The common perception that some of the most exciting science occurs when the advancing edges of two disparate disciplines intersect is borne out by this project because host nutriture was shown for the first time to influence the genetic make-up of an invading viral pathogen. Encouragement of joint cooperative ventures should have a high priority as demanded by increasingly difficult scientific problems and as desired by scientists themselves who wish to see their research progress more quickly.
