RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease with variable clinical manifestations and atypical presentation in humans. Human brucellosis cases are not seen often in Malaysia. CASE REPORT: This is a case report of 19 years old gentleman who presented with fever, lower limb redness, pain and swelling. He was initially treated as cellulitis. However, based on the recovery of Brucella melitensis from his blood culture, he was later diagnosed to have brucellosis. He had a history of consumption of fresh goat's milk and uncooked meat which could have been the possible modes of transmission. Brucella serology IgM and IgG were both positive, and anti-Brucella immunocapture agglutination test (BrucellaCapt) was also positive with a titer of 1:2560. He was treated with six weeks of oral doxycycline 100 mg twice daily and oral rifampin 450 mg twice daily. DISCUSSION: This is a case of human brucellosis with atypical cutaneous involvement.

RESUMEN

An alcoholic extract of the leaves of Premna tomentosa Willd at a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity in albino rats. The extract caused reduction in the weight of spleen, thymus and adrenals. It reduced cotton pellet granuloma by 32.21%. The serum biochemical parameters showed reduction in protein, acid phosphatase and transaminases. The activity of P. tomentosa was comparable to phenylbutazone.

RESUMEN

Draksarista was prepared on experimental scale and the progress of fermentation was studied with reference to the conversion of sugars into alcohol and the attended variations in physico-chemical constants in the medium. It has been observed that a species of Saccharomyces isolated from Madhuka flowers was capable of causing fermentation in the Draksarista medium. However, its performance was less as compared to that of a Bacillus species isolated from Jaggery. These studies indicate that solid content, specific gravity, alcohol content and the like are lax parameters and that chromatographic methods are alone dependable to prescribe standards.

RESUMEN

A saccharomyces sp. causing fermentation in Meduca asava was isolated from Maduca flowers (Maduca longifolia Macbride). The capability of the organism to cause fermentation in Drakshasava was carried out. The Saccharomyces sp. caused alcoholic fermentation and the alcoholic fermentation and the alcohol produced was almost equal in quantity to that prepared according to textual method. The change in the pH of fermenting medium did not help in increased production of alcohol.
