RESUMEN

The goal of this work is to show how the thermospin polarization current in a quantum ring changes in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a quantized single photon mode of a cavity the ring is placed in. Employing the reduced density operator and a general master equation formalism, we find that both the Rashba interaction and the photon field can significantly modulate the spin polarization and the thermospin polarization current. Tuning the Rashba coupling constant, degenerate energy levels are formed corresponding to the Aharonov-Casher destructive phase interference in the quantum ring system. Our analysis indicates that the maximum spin polarization can be observed at the points of degenerate energy levels due to spin accumulation in the system without the photon field. The thermospin current is thus suppressed. In the presence of the cavity, the photon field leads to an additional kinetic momentum of the electron. As a result the spin polarization can be enhanced by the photon field.

The present study was conducted to study the impact of the virulence factors invC and sseD of the two type III secretion systems of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) on the pathogenesis of the porcine S. Typhimurium DT104 infection. For this purpose, two S. Typhimurium mutant strains with a disrupted invC gene of the Salmonella pathogenicity island 1 or with a disrupted sseD gene of the Salmonella pathogenicity island 2 have been studied in experimental infection of pigs. Twenty-two 7-week-old male hybrid pigs were either infected with one of the mutants or the wild-type S. Typhimurium DT104 strain. Each group was examined for clinical signs, Salmonella shedding rate and the specific antibody response. Survival and replication were evaluated by qualitative and quantitative determination of the colonization rate. The humoral and cellular immune responses were examined using isotype-specific ELISA and quantitative real-time PCR of IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12 and IFN-gamma. The results proved that both mutants had a lower virulence (with marked differences between both mutants) than the wild-type and that both virulence factors have importance in porcine salmonellosis. Only pigs infected with the wild-type S. Typhimurium DT104 exhibited typical clinical symptoms of salmonellosis like anorexia, vomiting, disturbed demeanour, fever and diarrhoea. Deletion of the invC gene resulted in a significantly reduced colonization rate. Interestingly, the mRNA expression of both type-1 and type-2 cytokines were significantly decreased in pigs infected with either the invC-mutant and the sseD-mutant strain.

RESUMEN

Energy barriers between the metal Fermi energy and the molecular levels of organic semiconductor devoted to charge transport play a fundamental role in the performance of organic electronic devices. Typically, techniques such as electron photoemission spectroscopy, Kelvin probe measurements, and in-device hot-electron spectroscopy have been applied to study these interfacial energy barriers. However, so far there has not been any direct method available for the determination of energy barriers at metal interfaces with n-type polymeric semiconductors. This study measures and compares metal/solution-processed electron-transporting polymer interface energy barriers by in-device hot-electron spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. It not only demonstrates in-device hot-electron spectroscopy as a direct and reliable technique for these studies but also brings it closer to technological applications by working ex situ under ambient conditions. Moreover, this study determines that the contamination layer coming from air exposure does not play any significant role on the energy barrier alignment for charge transport. The theoretical model developed for this work confirms all the experimental observations.

We apply exact-exchange spin-density functional theory in the Krieger-Li-Iafrate approximation to interacting electrons in quantum rings of different widths. The rings are threaded by a magnetic flux that induces a persistent current. A weak space and spin symmetry breaking potential is introduced to allow for localized solutions. As the electron-electron interaction strength described by the dimensionless parameter r(S) is increased, we observe-at a fixed spin magnetic moment-the subsequent transition of both spin sub-systems from the Fermi liquid to the Wigner crystal state. A dramatic signature of Wigner crystallization is that the persistent current drops sharply with increasing r(S). We observe simultaneously the emergence of pronounced oscillations in the spin-resolved densities and in the electron localization functions indicating a spatial electron localization showing ferrimagnetic order after both spin sub-systems have undergone the Wigner crystallization. The critical r(S)(c) at the transition point is substantially smaller than in a fully spin-polarized system and decreases further with decreasing ring width. Relaxing the constraint of a fixed spin magnetic moment, we find that on increasing r(S) the stable phase changes from an unpolarized Fermi liquid to an antiferromagnetic Wigner crystal and finally to a fully polarized Fermi liquid.

The potency to protect pigs against colonization and against clinical salmonellosis was evaluated after oral immunization with a live gyrA-cpxA-rpoB Salmonella (S.) Typhimurium mutant (S. Tm. Nal2/Rif9/Rtt). Twenty 4-week-old male hybrid piglets were immunized orally, a control group received a placebo. Three weeks postimmunization, all pigs were challenged orally with a highly virulent S. Typhimurium DT104 strain. Clinical investigation revealed that immunization prevented the vaccinated pigs from clinical symptoms of salmonellosis. While all placebo-treated animals showed a 2-4-day episode of moderate to severe clinical symptoms, 90% of immunized pigs did not show any clinical signs at all. The bacteriological results showed a marked beneficial effect of the oral immunization. Vaccinated pigs showed a significantly decreased rate of colonization of the inner organs (42.5% versus 87.5%) when compared to the placebo-treated animals. Furthermore, in comparison to the non-immunized pigs, the vaccines developed a higher specific immunoglobulin (Ig)A antibody activity, but a significant lower IgM antibody activity in serum. The findings underline the ability of an attenuated oral live S. Typhimurium mutant to prevent clinical symptoms of salmonellosis in pigs and to significantly reduce the colonization of tissues and inner organs, as well as the shedding of S. Typhimurium.

The aim of the present study was to provide current data on the prevalence of anti-Yersinia-antibodies in Bavarian slaughtering pigs. The recomBlot Westernblot assay based on five recombinantly produced Yersinia Outer Proteins (YopD, YopE, YopH, YopM, V-antigen) is well evaluated for the use in the diagnosis of human yersiniosis and proved to be also a valuable tool for the detection of porcine antibodies. 965 out of 1002 meat juice samples collected in 53 Bavarian pig farms contained anti-Yop/V-Ag-antibodies. Only blots with three or more detectable signals were considered as positive. On the basis of these results a possible previous history of Yersinia infection was detected in 45.4% of the pigs and all of the pig farms. The high prevalence of anti-Yersinia-antibodies found in this investigation demonstrates the need for further epidemiological surveillance and animal studies to assess consumers' endangering.
