[Anatomo-pathologic aspects of phycomycoses. 6 clinical cases observed in Ivory Coast]. / Aspects anatomo-pathologiques des phycomycoses. A propos de 6 cas observés en Côte-d'Ivoire

Six cases of superficial phycomycosis have been recently demonstrated in Ivory Coast, the total number of cases being therefore 8 in this country. After a brief review of the etiology, clinical studies, treatment, and geographical distribution of the 150 world cases known to-day, the author studies the histological lesions of this hypodermic granulatous inflammation, whose characteristic aspects (polynuclear micro-abcesses, palissade histiocytes, filaments sheathed in an eosinophil precipitate) are easy to recognise. These anatomopathological aspects vary according to the topography, clinical evolution and treatment. The author presents a summary of the only ultrastructure known today. He points out the significance of this anatomo-pathologic study, which shows the evolution of the immunitary reaction and permits a relatively precise pronostic.

[Chronic diarrhea and parasitoses in adults suspected of AIDS in the Ivory Coast]. / Diarrhées chroniques et parasitoses chez des adultes suspectés de SIDA en Côte-d'Ivoire.

148 adult patients with chronic diarrhoea and suspected to be HIV infected have had stool examinations. 46 are without any enteric parasite. Those detected in the others patients are Sporozoans: I. belli (16.2%) and Cryptosporidium sp. (6.7%) found alone or joint, together or with other parasites. Among those, all Flagellate species are identified, but T. intestinalis (6%) is predominant. Entamoeba coli (8.%) is the most frequent amebic species, however, E. histolytica histolytica have been found twice, once singly, the second associated with I. belli, Schistosoma mansoni and Candida albicans. Necator americanus (14%) and Strongyloides stercoralis (12%) are the predominant worm species. Among the yeasts, C. albicans (35.8%) is the most important species isolated, singly in 13.5% of the patients. In an intertropical and parasitical endemic area where many parasites are not considered uncommon, opportunist agents as I. belli, Cryptosporidium sp. and C. albicans appear in an non-negligible frequency in our study.

In a study involving 104 children hospitalized with diarrhoea, 9% were infected with oocyst Cryptosporidium spp. add 56% with such yeast-fungus as Candida (C. Candida 38%). The manifestations noted in cryptosporidiosis infected children are acute diarrhea, vomiting and hyperthermia. One subject out of five who were tested for antibody to HIV appeared to be antibody positive. The patients immunity from the disease was not checked. A mycological test must be systematically carried out in case of children diarrheal outbreak.
