INTRODUCTION: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is an important complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) which is worsened when the diagnosis of T1DM is delayed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presentation patterns, severity, autoantibody status, and seasonal variability of newly diagnosed T1DM patients during the pandemic period of 2 years compared to those in the pre-pandemic period. METHODS: In this single tertiary center retrospective cohort study, newly diagnosed T1DM patients were grouped as pre-pandemic and pandemic period. Age, gender, the month of diagnosis, hemoglobin A1c, venous blood gas parameters, duration of symptoms, glutamic-acid-decarboxylase-antibody (anti-GAD), islet-cell antibody (ICA), and insulin autoantibody levels were recorded. The data obtained were compared between the groups. RESULTS: Number of patients presenting with DKA was significantly higher during the pandemic period (92 [65.7%] vs. 62 [40.8%] patients, p < 0.001). In terms of clinical severity of DKA, pH, and HCO3 levels were lower during the pandemic period (p < 0.001), while the number of patients presenting with severe DKA was significantly higher during the pandemic period (41 [44.6%] vs. 17 [27.4%] patients, p = 0.031). ICA positivity was significantly higher in patients admitted during the pandemic period (47 [36.4%] vs. 21 patients [16.9%], p < 0.001), especially in the second year of the pandemic (p < 0.001). Anti-GAD-ICA co-positivity was significantly higher in patients admitted during the pandemic period and also in second year of the pandemic (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: DKA rates increased in newly diagnosed T1DM cases during the pandemic. Despite the relaxation of bans, the second year of the pandemic also saw increased rates of DKA and severe DKA compared to the pre-pandemic period. The significantly increased ICA positivity in the pandemic may support the effects of COVID-19 on autoimmune T1DM.

The atmospheric history of molecular hydrogen (H2) from 1852 to 2003 was reconstructed from measurements of firn air collected at Megadunes, Antarctica. The reconstruction shows that H2 levels in the southern hemisphere were roughly constant near 330 parts per billion (ppb; nmol H2 mol-1 air) during the mid to late 1800s. Over the twentieth century, H2 levels rose by about 70% to 550 ppb. The reconstruction shows good agreement with the H2 atmospheric history based on firn air measurements from the South Pole. The broad trends in atmospheric H2 over the twentieth century can be explained by increased methane oxidation and anthropogenic emissions. The H2 rise shows no evidence of deceleration during the last quarter of the twentieth century despite an expected reduction in automotive emissions following more stringent regulations. During the late twentieth century, atmospheric CO levels decreased due to a reduction in automotive emissions. It is surprising that atmospheric H2 did not respond similarly as automotive exhaust is thought to be the dominant source of anthropogenic H2. The monotonic late twentieth century rise in H2 levels is consistent with late twentieth-century flask air measurements from high southern latitudes. An additional unknown source of H2 is needed to explain twentieth-century trends in atmospheric H2 and to resolve the discrepancy between bottom-up and top-down estimates of the anthropogenic source term. The firn air-based atmospheric history of H2 provides a baseline from which to assess human impact on the H2 cycle over the last 150 y and validate models that will be used to project future trends in atmospheric composition as H2 becomes a more common energy source.

Hawthorn is an important medicinal plant that spreads around the world and is used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its flowers and leaves contain flavonoids, vitamins, organic acids and essential oils. Its fruit is consumed as fresh and dried and is an important plant for human health. In this study, iPBS (Inter Primer Binding Site) and SCoT (Start Codon Target Polymorphism) markers were used to analyze genetic variation among 101 hawthorn genotypes collected from Çoruh Valley, Türkiye and ITS markers were used for DNA barcoding.  Ten iPBS primers were used and a total of 400 alleles were identified from ten iPBS primers with an average of 40 alleles. PIC values ranged from 0.239 (iPBS 2387) to 0.272 (iPBS 2244). Twenty SCoT primers were used and have an average of 50.05 alleles. The PIC values of the primers ranged from 0.251 (SCoT 2) to 0.297 (SCoT 34). For the DNA barcoding study, it was confirmed that the correct region was amplified and sequenced. The genotypes we used in the study matched 14 different accession numbers by searching a BLASTN in the NCBI. NCBI similarity rates of hawthorn genotypes are between 90.83% and 100%. The study emphasizes the genetic diversity of hawthorn grown from seed and the importance of preserving plant genetic resources.

The two-component system (TCS) generally consists of three elements, namely the histidine kinase (HK), response regulator (RR), and histidine phosphotransfer (HP) gene families. This study aimed to assess the expression of TCS genes in P. vulgaris leaf tissue under salt and drought stress and perform a genome-wide analysis of TCS gene family members using bioinformatics methods. This study identified 67 PvTCS genes, including 10 PvHP, 38 PvRR, and 19 PvHK, in the bean genome. PvHK2 had the maximum number of amino acids with 1261, whilst PvHP8 had the lowest number with 87. In addition, their theoretical isoelectric points were between 4.56 (PvHP8) and 9.15 (PvPRR10). The majority of PvTCS genes are unstable. Phylogenetic analysis of TCS genes in A. thaliana, G. max, and bean found that PvTCS genes had close phylogenetic relationships with the genes of other plants. Segmental and tandem duplicate gene pairs were detected among the TCS genes and TCS genes have been subjected to purifying selection pressure in the evolutionary process. Furthermore, the TCS gene family, which has an important role in abiotic stress and hormonal responses in plants, was characterized for the first time in beans, and its expression of TCS genes in bean leaves under salt and drought stress was established using RNAseq and qRT-PCR analyses. The findings of this study will aid future functional and genomic studies by providing essential information about the members of the TCS gene family in beans. The inflammatory/anti-inflammatory balance has an important role in the clinical course of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) infection, which has affected over 200 million people since it first appeared in China in December 2019. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of montelukast, which has known anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory effects, in these patients. The prospective randomized controlled study included 180 patients who were hospitalized in the infectious diseases department of our hospital between May and July 2021 and were diagnosed with the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 by real-time polymerase chain reaction of nasopharyngeal swabs. The patients were divided into three groups and received only standard treatment according to national guidelines (Group 1) or standard treatment plus 10 mg/day montelukast (Group 2) or 20 mg/day montelukast (Group 3). Laboratory parameters and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) at admission and on Day 5 of treatment were compared. Comparison of laboratory parameters on Day 5 showed that Groups 2 and 3 had significantly lower levels of lactate dehydrogenase, fibrinogen, D-dimer, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin compared with Group 1 (p = 0.04, 0.002, 0.05, 0.03, and 0.04, respectively). In the comparison between Groups 2 and 3, only fibrinogen was significantly lower in Group 3 (p = 0.02). PFT results did not differ between the groups at admission, while on Day 5, only Group 3 showed significant improvements in forced expiratory volume in 1 s, forced vital capacity, and peak expiratory flow 25-75 compared with admission (p = 0.001 for all). Montelukast may be beneficial in COVID-19 patients to maintain the inflammatory/anti-inflammatory balance, prevent respiratory failure through its bronchodilator activity, and reduce mortality.

Biomass burning drives changes in greenhouse gases, climate-forcing aerosols, and global atmospheric chemistry. There is controversy about the magnitude and timing of changes in biomass burning emissions on millennial time scales from preindustrial to present and about the relative importance of climate change and human activities as the underlying cause. Biomass burning is one of two notable sources of ethane in the preindustrial atmosphere. Here, we present ice core ethane measurements from Antarctica and Greenland that contain information about changes in biomass burning emissions since 1000 CE (Common Era). The biomass burning emissions of ethane during the Medieval Period (1000-1500 CE) were higher than present day and declined sharply to a minimum during the cooler Little Ice Age (1600-1800 CE). Assuming that preindustrial atmospheric reactivity and transport were the same as in the modern atmosphere, we estimate that biomass burning emissions decreased by 30 to 45% from the Medieval Period to the Little Ice Age. The timing and magnitude of this decline in biomass burning emissions is consistent with that inferred from ice core methane stable carbon isotope ratios but inconsistent with histories based on sedimentary charcoal and ice core carbon monoxide measurements. This study demonstrates that biomass burning emissions have exceeded modern levels in the past and may be highly sensitive to changes in climate.

PURPOSE: To develop a practical scoring system to assist clinicians in differentiating leptospirosis and hantavirus infections, whose epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory characteristics are literally like identical twins. METHODS: The study population consisted of 162 patients admitted to hospital with a confirmed diagnosis of leptospirosis (LG group, n = 92) and hantavirus infections (HG, group = 70) between January 2000 and January 2019. The two groups were compared in terms of demographic, clinical and laboratory features. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values were determined from ROC analysis for findings of significance in the diagnosis of leptospirosis, and a scoring system for diagnosis was developed ("MICE" score). During the development of this scoring system, we were careful to employ parameters that would not affect one another statistically, to reflect the involvement of very different systems (such as the hematological, hepatic, renal, and musculoskeletal systems) due to the multisystemic effect of the disease in the organism, and to ensure that the system should be simple to apply and understand. Accordingly, five parameters, serum WBC, creatinine, creatine kinase, total bilirubin, and C-reactive protein, were employed in the "MICE" scoring system. RESULTS: Three cut-off values were determined using ROC analysis for the five parameters included in the MICE system. Accordingly, scores of 0, 1, or 2 were given based on the values WBC (/µL): ≤ 7500, 7500-15,000, and > 15,000; total bilirubin (mg/dL): ≤ 3, 3-10, and > 10; CRP (mg/dL): ≤ 5, 5-15, and > 15; creatinine (mg/dL): ≤ 1.5, 1.5-3, and > 3; CK (U/L): ≤ 500, 500-1000, > 1000. AUC was calculated as 0.964 at ROC analysis, while the most noteworthy cut-off point was obtained when MICE score was ≥ 3, exhibiting 93.5% sensitivity, 92.9% specificity, PPV 94.5% and NPV 91.5%. A test score ≥ 3 was regarded as positive. In addition, our patients were evaluated using other current scoring systems in addition to "MICE," and our scoring system exhibited a greater diagnostic power in our subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Leptospirosis and hantavirus infections can be accurately predicted by the MICE scoring system. Early diagnosis and rational treatment will also help to lower the mortality rates in these diseases.

Herbal-flavonoids (HF) as polyphenolic secondary metabolites are taken in the daily diet to join in many metabolic processes in the human organism. Anti-proliferative activities and human serum albumin (HSA) binding capacities of herbal-flavonoids namely 7,5'-dimethoxyisoetin (HF1), homoorientin-6''-4-O-methyl-myo-inositol (HF2), (2R, 3R)-(+)-dihydrokaempferol-7,4'-dimethylether (HF3), eriodictyol-7,4'-dimethylether (HF4) and flavonoids isoorientin (HF5) and genkwanin (HF6) were investigated. Anti-proliferative activities were determined by the xCELLigence system by treatment with human prostate (PC3) and cervical cancer (HeLa) cells. The binding capacities were studied by two-dimensional (2D-FL) and three-dimensional (3D-FL) fluorescence spectroscopy. HeLa and PC3 cell lines were treated with flavonoids at 10, 50 and 100 µg/mL concentrations over a 48 hour period. Stable anti-proliferative efficacy plots were obtained for tested flavonoids. From the flavonoids, HF3 and HF4 showed the strongest anti-proliferative effect against PC3 and HeLa cell line. HF1 and HF2 exhibited the strongest binding capacity to the HSA corresponding to Kb values of 3.81 x 104 M-1 and 6.00 x 104 M-1, respectively. The studies revealed that the flavonoids form the basis of in vivo preclinical studies as important nutraceuticals of the daily diet, as well as modelled in medical and pharmacological applications.

Pathologic halitosis has been classified into 5 types: oral, airway, gastroesophageal, blood-borne and subjective, respectively. Type 1 (oral) halitosis mostly takes origin from anaerobic bacterial activities on oral surfaces. The role of anaerobic bacterial activities is clearly demonstrated, but despite the large number of anectodal claims, the role of Candida in patients with halitosis has not been adequately investigated. The aim of this study was to confirm the relationship between Candida and halitosis. A total of 136 subjects were enrolled and divided into two groups. The study group comprised of 69 patients with halitosis who had over 0.7 ppm H2S concentration in their oral cavity and the control group comprised of 67 healthly subjects. Self assesment scores for halitosis, Candida colony counts in saliva samples, oral NH3, SO2, H2S, H2 and volatile organic gas concentrations were recorded. H2S producing capacity of subjects was quantified by applying cysteine challenge test. Candida samples were taken from the mouths of the patients with and without halitosis, and Candida albicans isolates were inoculated into broth medium. After 3 days of incubation at 37oC, gas concentrations of the headspace of the flasks were read by a portable multigas detector. The rate of Candida positivity was 44.9% in the study group while it was 46.3% in the control group. There was no statistical significant difference between the groups according to the Candida growth (p= 0.561). The oral gas concentrations were comparable in both groups (p< 0.05). Oral H2S concentration increased 9.65 fold with 20 mM cysteine rinse in patients with halitosis while it was increased 5.8 fold in controls. Self assesment for halitosis were well correlated with clinical signs (p= 0.001, r= 0.8). Concentrations of hidrogen and organic gases were found to be increased in all Candida culture media. In this study, no relationship between the presence of Candida and oral halitosis was detected. As a result, there is no need for diets similar to Candida diet in the treatment of halitosis. On the other hand, cysteine challenge can be a useful diagnostic tool. In addition, portable gas detectors can be used as a convenient and practical halitometer to quantify halitosis.

Methane and ethane are the most abundant hydrocarbons in the atmosphere and they affect both atmospheric chemistry and climate. Both gases are emitted from fossil fuels and biomass burning, whereas methane (CH(4)) alone has large sources from wetlands, agriculture, landfills and waste water. Here we use measurements in firn (perennial snowpack) air from Greenland and Antarctica to reconstruct the atmospheric variability of ethane (C(2)H(6)) during the twentieth century. Ethane levels rose from early in the century until the 1980s, when the trend reversed, with a period of decline over the next 20 years. We find that this variability was primarily driven by changes in ethane emissions from fossil fuels; these emissions peaked in the 1960s and 1970s at 14-16 teragrams per year (1 Tg = 10(12) g) and dropped to 8-10 Tg yr(-1) by the turn of the century. The reduction in fossil-fuel sources is probably related to changes in light hydrocarbon emissions associated with petroleum production and use. The ethane-based fossil-fuel emission history is strikingly different from bottom-up estimates of methane emissions from fossil-fuel use, and implies that the fossil-fuel source of methane started to decline in the 1980s and probably caused the late twentieth century slow-down in the growth rate of atmospheric methane.

OBJECTIVES: Halitosis is composed by hundreds of toxic gases. It is still not clear whether halitosis gases self-inhaled by halitosis patients cause side effects. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of H2S inhalation at a low concentration (human equivalent dose of pathologic halitosis) on rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The threshold level of pathologic halitosis perceived by humans at 250 ppb of H2S was converted to rat equivalent concentration (4.15 ppm). In the experimental group, 8 rats were exposed to H2S via continuous inhalation but not the control rats. After 50 days, blood parameters were measured and tissue samples were obtained from the brain, kidney and liver and examined histopathologically to determine any systemic effect. RESULTS: While aspartate transaminase, creatine kinase-MB and lactate dehydrogenase levels were found to be significantly elevated, carbondioxide and alkaline phosphatase were decreased in experimental rats. Other blood parameters were not changed significantly. Experimental rats lost weight and became anxious. Histopathological examination showed mononuclear inflammatory cell invasion in the portal areas, nuclear glycogen vacuoles in the parenchymal area, single-cell necrosis in a few foci, clear expansion in the central hepatic vein and sinusoids, hyperplasia in Kupffer cells and potential fibrous tissue expansion in the portal areas in the experimental rats. However, no considerable histologic damage was observed in the brain and kidney specimens. CONCLUSIONS: It can be concluded that H2S inhalation equivalent to pathologic halitosis producing level in humans may lead to systemic effects, particularly heart or liver damage in rats.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is always damaged by endogenous and exogenous factors. Magnetic field (MF) is one of these exogenous factors. When repair mechanisms are not sufficient, mainly because of imbalance in damage or mistakes in repair mechanisms, methylation of DNA results in polymorphism-related abnormalities. In this study, low intensity static magnetic field-induced DNA damage and methylation in wheat calli were investigated by using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA and Coupled Restriction Enzyme Digestion-Random Amplification techniques. Calli were derived from mature embryos of wheat. Both 7- and 14-day-old wheat calli were exposed to 7 mT (millitesla) static MF for 24, 48, 72, 96, or 120 h of incubation period. The highest change in polymorphism rate was obtained in calli exposed to 7 mT MF for 120 h in both 7- and 14-day-old calli. Increase in MF duration caused DNA hypermethylation in both 7- and 14-day-old calli. Polymorphism and DNA methylation ratio were higher in 7-day-old calli. The highest methylation level with a value of 25.1% was found in 7-day-old calli exposed to MF for 120 h. BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates are used in the treatment of vitamin D intoxication (VDI) after failure of conventional therapy including prednisolone. Safety concerns restrict the use of bisphosphonates from being used as first-line therapy for VDI in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pamidronate in comparison with prednisolone in children with VDI. METHODS: We reviewed the hospital records of children consecutively diagnosed with VDI at two medical centers in a 15 year period. RESULTS: The subjects consisted of 21 children (age, 0.3-4.2 years) who were treated with prednisolone and/or bisphosphonates. Pamidronate (n = 18) or alendronate (n = 3) was used in six patients after unsuccessful prednisolone treatment, and in 15 patients from baseline. Initial serum calcium and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were 16.1 ± 1.9 mg/dL and 493 ± 219 ng/mL, respectively. The median time to reach normocalcemia in the pamidronate, alendronate and prednisolone groups was 3 days (range, 2-12 days), 4 days (range, 3-6 days) and 17 days (range, 12-26 days), respectively (P = 0.013). The pamidronate group had a fivefold shorter hospital stay than the prednisolone group. Three patients initially treated with prednisolone developed nephrocalcinosis but this did not occur in any patient treated with bisphosphonates from baseline. Apart from transient fever and moderate hypophosphatemia, no side-effect of bisphosphonate treatment was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Pamidronate is efficient and safe for the treatment of VDI in children. Pamidronate use significantly shortens the duration of treatment, and thereby may prevent the development of nephrocalcinosis. Instead of prednisolone, pamidronate should be used together with hydration and furosemide as the first-line therapy for VDI.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) appear mainly in the oral air of patients with halitosis. It seems that VSCs are directly involved in the pathogenesis of gingival diseases. In previous studies, short-term (7 hours-4 days), high concentrations (5-400 ppm) of H2S applications on periodontal tissues have been evaluated in a culture medium. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential effects of lower (equivalent to halitosis) concentrations of H2S on rat gingival tissue for longer-term inhalation. The threshold level of pathologic halitosis perceived by humans at 250 ppb of H2S was converted to rat equivalent concentration (4.15 ppm). Rats in the experimental (H2S) group (n=8) were exposed to H2S continuously but not the control rats (n=8). After 50 days, the gingival sulcular tissue samples of each rat were taken and examined using transmission electron microscope. Ultrastructural changes in the sulcular epithelia of the rat gingiva showed deformation of celullar shape, vacuolization, and disintegrity of intercelullar connection by loss of desmosomes and collagen fibrils. No basal membrane damage was observed. Inhalation of low levels of H2S (equivalent of halitosis) in the oral environment causes ultrastructural celullar damages in rat sulcular mucosa. These results suggest that halitosis may be the potential reason for periodontal destruction in humans.

OBJECTIVE: Three sources of halitosis exist, potentially in any combination: mouth, nasal cavity or alveolar breath. There has been no universally accepted protocol which differentiates and quantifies each odour source separately. In this study a new gas measurement protocol is described and tested to determine whether each odour source can be separately detected without contamination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety healthy volunteers were divided into three groups. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hydrogen (H2) were artificially generated in the mouth, nose and pulmonary alveoli, respectively. VOC, ammonia (NH3), sulphur dioxide (SO2), H2S and H2 gas readings from mouth, nose and alveolar air were measured and compared. Measurements were taken before and during gas generation. RESULTS: Contamination of nasal air (2.8%) and alveolar air (5.0%) by oral H2S; alveolar air (2.06%) and oral air (4%) by nasal organic gas; nasal air (18.43%) and oral air (9.42%) by alveolar H2 was calculated. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated that artificially generated oral H2S nasal VOC and alveolar H2 can be individually quantified. This gas measurement protocol can be used diagnostically or to gauge response to therapy in any medical or dental setting.

[Purpose] The effects of vitamin D on the circulating levels of IL-17 and IL-13 were investigated in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 without neuropathy, and healthy controls. [Subjects and Methods] A single-blind controlled clinical study was performed, including70 type 2 diabetic patients with or without diabetic peripheral neuropathy and 33 healthy volunteer controls. The 25(OH)D levels were evaluated using ultra-performance liquid chromatography, and IL-17 and IL-13 levels were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. [Results] The 25(OH) vitamin D concentration was lower in diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients than in diabetes mellitus patients without neuropathy and healthy controls. Similarly, 25(OH)D levels were lower in diabetes mellitus patients than healthy controls. IL-17 and IL-13 levels were higher in diabetes mellitus patients than in controls. Additionally, IL-13 levels were higher in diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients than in diabetes mellitus patients without neuropathy. These differences were statistically significant. There was a significant positive correlation between 25(OH)D and IL-13,and a negative correlation between 25(OH)D andIL-17 in the diabetic and diabetic neuropathy groups. [Conclusion] Vitamin D is a potential modifiable risk factor for diabetic peripheral neuropathy and may regulate inflammatory mediators, e.g., IL-17 and IL-13.

OBJECTIVE: Arsenic exposure is increasing in communities due to environmental pollution and industrial development. Arsenic is toxic to organ systems because it causes oxidative stress, enzymatic inhibition, and damage to protein structures. The liver, for example, is an organ that may be damaged by arsenic, and this damage may cause various clinical conditions like hepatic failure or cancer. Melatonin is a hormone that acts like an antioxidant, an anti-inflammatory agent, and a cytoprotective agent. In this study, we aimed to evaluate melatonin's protective effects on livers damaged by arsenic toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley male rats were classified into three groups: a control group, an arsenic applied group, and an arsenic plus 10 mg/kg melatonin applied group. At the end of the fifteen-day experiment, the rats were sacrificed. Albumin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), total protein, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 measurements were obtained. RESULTS: In rats with liver damage due to arsenic exposure, melatonin administration significantly decreased the levels of IL-6, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (p<0.001, p=0.02 and p=0.04, respectively). CONCLUSION: After evaluating liver enzymes and inflammatory markers, this study determined that melatonin exposure improves liver tissue damage caused by arsenic exposure, with the degree of improvement varying based on the levels of arsenic exposure.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the actions of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) on the changes of endothelin-1 (ET-1) level, tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) alpha, and oxidative stress parameters such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in experimental sepsis model in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into three experimental groups: sham (group 1), sepsis (group 2), and sepsis + CAPE (group 3), n = 8 each. CAPE was administered (10 µmol/kg) intraperitoneally to group 3 before sepsis induction. Serum ET-1, serum TNF-alpha, tissue SOD activity, and tissue MDA levels were measured in all groups. RESULTS: Pretreatment with CAPE decreased ET-1, TNF-alpha, and MDA levels in sepsis induced rats. Additionally SOD activities were higher in rats pretreated with CAPE after sepsis induction. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that CAPE may have a beneficial effect on ET and TNF-alpha levels and oxidative stress parameters induced by sepsis in experimental rat models. Therefore treatment with CAPE can be used to avoid devastating effects of sepsis.

OBJECTIVE: In the current study, it was aimed to investigate the temperature change in the cavity wall and pathologic necrosis occurred during cauterization, which was applied at different voltages and time intervals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The right tibias of 32 male rabbits were used. Three 2-mm-diameter holes were created on the cortical surface of the tibia using a hand-held drill. Using an electrocautery device, 55 mV was applied for 3 and 5 s and 65 mV was applied for 3 and 5 s. Maximum temperatures at 3 and 6 mm distance from the application site were measured. Biopsy specimens obtained at 3 and 6 mm distance from the application site were evaluated microscopically for bone cell viability and periosteal necrosis. RESULTS: Thirty-two rabbits were divided into four groups. In all groups, periosteal bone cells located at the region, extending from the application site to 3 mm distance, died. In this region, application of 55 mV for 3 s caused peripheral necrosis. There were significant differences between the four groups in terms of maximum temperatures measured at 3 mm distance from the application site (p = 0.027). On the other hand, no significant differences were noted between the four groups in terms of maximum temperatures measured at 6 mm distance from the application site (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Cauterization of the cavity wall in the spray mode at 55 mV for 3 s after tumor resection caused necrosis in the cavity wall, extending from the application site to 3 mm distance. The aims of the present study were to evaluate oxidative status, by investigating the serum Paraoxonase/Arylesterase (PON/ARE) activities along with conjugated dienes in patients with IBS and controls and to confirm the link between oxidative stress and IBS. Thirty IBS patient and 30 healthy subjects were recruited. Total serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides (TG), PON and ARE activities and conjugated dienes levels were measured. Mean serum PON1 activity was lower in IBS group compared to that of the control group whereas there was no significant difference in ARE activity between IBS and control groups (p < 0.000, p < 0.716, respectively). Serum conjugated diene levels of the IBS group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.01). The drop in PON activity accompanied with an increase in conjugated diene levels indicate the presence of oxidative stress, a disturbance in prooxidant - antioxidant balance and increased inflammation in IBS patients.
