RESUMEN

The low-latency adaptive optical mirror system (LLAMAS) is designed to push the limits on achievable latencies and frame rates. It has 21 subapertures across its pupil. A reformulated version of the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) method predictive Fourier control is implemented in LLAMAS; for all modes, it takes just 30 µs to compute. In the testbed, a turbulator mixes hot and ambient air to produce wind-blown turbulence. Wind prediction clearly improves correction when compared to an integral controller. Closed-loop telemetry shows that wind-predictive LQG removes the characteristic "butterfly" and reduces temporal error power by up to a factor of three for mid-spatial frequency modes. Strehl changes seen in focal plane images are consistent with telemetry and the system error budget.

RESUMEN

To fabricate high-precision and accurate optics relative to the optical design surface, a high level of deterministic control of material removal (i.e., the tool influence function, TIF) during subaperture tool polishing is required. In this study, a detailed analysis of the pressure distribution, which is a key component of the TIF, has been performed using finite element analysis to couple together solid mechanics and fluid dynamics. Modeling experimental parameters of recently published work reveals that, when considering tool deformation, which in turn influences the fluid film thickness between the tool and workpiece, the effective pressure profile has a flat-top distribution. This flat-top pressure profile differs from the parabolic pressure distributions predicted by Hertzian mechanics. Moreover, the shear contribution is shown here to be a key contributor to material removal, inducing the removal at the periphery of the contact edge and even outside the generally accepted contact area. Finally, the simulated fluid velocities provide evidence of mixed-mode contact polishing, supporting recent experimental findings that also suggest that onset of hydroplaning contributions lead to material removal drop-off.

We describe an approach that enables the design of optical systems for optimal performance when built, i.e., when user-selected tolerances and compensators are taken into account. The approach does not require significant raytracing or computing time beyond what is used to optimize the nominal design. The approach uses nodal aberration theory to describe the effects of decentered optics; double Zernike polynomials to describe and quantify system performance; and an analytic approach to determining the necessary compensation and residual wavefront error due to a tolerance. We design a triplet using this approach and compare its Monte-Carlo-modeled as-built performance to that of a conventionally-optimized design which optimizes only nominal performance. We also describe several extensions to the theory.

The Gemini Planet Imager is a dedicated facility for directly imaging and spectroscopically characterizing extrasolar planets. It combines a very high-order adaptive optics system, a diffraction-suppressing coronagraph, and an integral field spectrograph with low spectral resolution but high spatial resolution. Every aspect of the Gemini Planet Imager has been tuned for maximum sensitivity to faint planets near bright stars. During first-light observations, we achieved an estimated H band Strehl ratio of 0.89 and a 5-σ contrast of 10(6) at 0.75 arcseconds and 10(5) at 0.35 arcseconds. Observations of Beta Pictoris clearly detect the planet, Beta Pictoris b, in a single 60-s exposure with minimal postprocessing. Beta Pictoris b is observed at a separation of 434 ± 6 milliarcseconds (mas) and position angle 211.8 ± 0.5°. Fitting the Keplerian orbit of Beta Pic b using the new position together with previous astrometry gives a factor of 3 improvement in most parameters over previous solutions. The planet orbits at a semimajor axis of [Formula: see text] near the 3:2 resonance with the previously known 6-AU asteroidal belt and is aligned with the inner warped disk. The observations give a 4% probability of a transit of the planet in late 2017.

RESUMEN

The Gemini Planet Imager's adaptive optics (AO) subsystem was designed specifically to facilitate high-contrast imaging. A definitive description of the system's algorithms and technologies as built is given. 564 AO telemetry measurements from the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey campaign are analyzed. The modal gain optimizer tracks changes in atmospheric conditions. Science observations show that image quality can be improved with the use of both the spatially filtered wavefront sensor and linear-quadratic-Gaussian control of vibration. The error budget indicates that for all targets and atmospheric conditions AO bandwidth error is the largest term.

A 32 x 32 microelectromechanical systems deformable mirror is controlled in closed loop with a spatially filtered Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor and a Fourier-transform wavefront reconstruction algorithm. A phase plate based on atmospheric turbulence statistics is used to generate a 1 microm peak-valley static phase aberration. Far-field images and direct phase measurements of the residual are used to compare performance with and without the spatial filter. Use of the spatial filter reduces error in the controllable band from 20 to 6 nm rms. Residual phase power is reduced by more than a factor of 5 for all spatial frequencies up to 0.85 x 1/2d, with a maximum attenuation factor of 37.

We describe an innovative implementation of the Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor that is designed to correct the perspective elongation of a laser guide beacon in adaptive optics. Subapertures are defined by the segments of a deformable mirror rather than by a conventional lenslet array. A bias tilt on each segment separates the beacon images on the sensor's detector. One removes the perspective elongation by dynamically driving each segment with a predetermined open-loop signal that would, in the absence of atmospheric wave-front aberration, keep the corresponding beacon image centered on the subaperture's optical axis.

BACKGROUND: The normal distribution of myocardial tracer activity is different in attenuation-corrected images compared with uncorrected images. We therefore postulated that quantitation of attenuation-corrected thallium 201 images with direct comparison to a database of healthy subjects could improve detection of coronary artery stenoses. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 49 patients with angiographic evidence of coronary artery disease and 69 patients with a less than 5% likelihood of coronary artery disease, tomographic Tl-201 myocardial imaging was performed by means of a triple-headed camera with fan-beam collimators and the images were processed with attenuation correction, with attenuation and Compton scatter correction, and without correction. Images were subjectively interpreted in a blinded manner. From the group of 69 patients with a low likelihood of coronary disease, scintigraphic data from the first 20 men and the first 20 women were used to generate normal reference ranges for each of the 3 image-processing methods. Data from the 49 patients with angiographic coronary disease and from the remaining 29 patients with a low likelihood of coronary disease were then analyzed quantitatively in comparison to the gender-matched normal databases. With visual interpretation, attenuation-corrected images yielded an improved detection rate compared with uncorrected images (79% vs 46%, P =.008) for 70% or greater left anterior descending coronary artery stenoses. Attenuation-corrected images also provided an improved normalcy rate for the right coronary artery territory (91% vs 75%, P =.006) and an improved normalcy rate when the images were analyzed overall by patient (88% vs 74%, P =.009). With quantitative analysis, attenuation correction yielded an improved detection rate for patients with a significant coronary artery stenosis compared with uncorrected images (90% vs 71%, P =.016). Defect extent was also increased by attenuation correction. Compared with attenuation correction alone, the addition of scatter correction yielded no incremental improvement in detection rate or normalcy rate. Attenuation-scatter correction did produce a nonsignificant trend toward detection of more of the total number of stenotic arteries compared with uncorrected images (60 vs 48 of 79 arteries). CONCLUSIONS: With the use of a triple-headed camera with fan-beam collimation, visual analysis of attenuation-corrected Tl-201 images improved detection of left anterior descending coronary artery disease without loss of detection in other coronary territories. Furthermore, quantitative analysis of attenuation-corrected Tl-201 images improved the overall detection rate for coronary artery disease in patients without compromise of the normalcy rate.
